Feb 14, 2010The freebie MS fonts are not loaded in v11.2 with the Gnome desktop. (This is a new installation, not an upgrade from an earlier version.)

OpenSUSE :: 3.2 Fonts Get Loaded To /usr/local/share/fonts?
Feb 23, 2010I have just installed openSUSE 11.2 X86_64 on my laptop, I then used KDE to install lots of type 1 fonts for my printer. These get loaded to /usr/local/share/fonts/...These installed fonts are visible to KDE (KWRITE) and GIMP so I assume that the installation was O.K. When I start openOFFICE writer I do not see these fonts. The font selection appears to be the fonts located under /usr/share/fonts. I have not tried other ooo3 components. I assume that they are not going to see the fonts either.
I have searched google and it appears that /usr/local/share/fonts is the correct location for non-packaged fonts. Has anybody any idea what is wrong? I think I could move all the fonts to /usr/share/fonts and ooo3 would work but this seems to break the installation directory structure. I have considered symlinks but I don't like the idea of defining a font twice to Linux and creating the syslinks is more work than reinstalling the fonts if they are lost

May 11, 2010My gnome-panel is at the left side of my screen (I use the 'splendid' cairo-dock at the bottom of my screen). But when more than eight windows are open, the dock freezes. The 'Computer' button works, as well as the tray icons. My CPU rushes to 26% constantly. Solution is to kill gnome-panel and it reappears without complaining (if few than 8 windows open).

Jul 18, 2010I have used a patched Cairo in 11.2 from Packman and the fonts were excellent. Now I upgraded to 11.3 and installed freetype from subpixel repo. While I have good fonts in Qt now, in Gnome still they are bad. There is no patched Cairo in Packman for 11.3 Installing the patched Cairo for 11.2 from Packman and from Ubuntu-patch project did not help

Feb 18, 2010opensuse v11.2 The Gnome help describes how to install fonts: copy the font files to </usr/share/fonts>. I have some Type1 fonts with PFB, PFM, AFM and sometimes INF face files. The only ones I see in the <Type1> directory are AFM and PFA. Which font files does Gnome actually require? Is a PFA needed? Are the font files moved/deleted from </usr/share/fonts/> after installation? Is there a more obvious way to install fonts in Gnome?

Apr 5, 2011I recently installed KDE (I was using GNOME). After that, I found for gnome applications, KDE font settings is applied even when I log in using GNOME. Whatever I do in appearance-fonts, all gnome applications follow the settings from KDE Personal Settings. (Application Appearance -> Fonts)
I lost all the subpixel hinting, and I finally just found out that if I set it in KDE Personal Settings it actually affects gnome applications. (I'm in GNOME now)

Sep 10, 2010when you first start up your computer it is in command line, before the gui has loaded. Just like when you type ctrl alt f1 it goes to a similar screen. in both those cases my fonts are twice the size they normally are. I've used ubuntu and slackware, installed them both on different occasions, and the font in the terminal was always small and looked like what i came to see as normal. but now they are stretched out and twice the size. i am wondering if there is a command or way to change either the font or the resolution or the display settings of the terminal.

May 27, 2010I finally performed my upgrade from Karmic today, everything went smooth and looked great. I decided to check out how KDE looked so I logged out, went into KDE and poked around for a bit then went back to GNOME. All my fonts are now that horrible tiny KDE font and I cannot, for the life of me, figure out how to return the fonts to their previous glory.
Can anyone, please, point me in the right direction? I've totally removed KDE from my system, I took all the files out of ~.fontconfig and set antialiasing to false in /etc/fonts/conf.avail/10-antialias.conf but still no joy. I haven't found the settings to get back to default but I've installed the MS font pack which looks better than the KDE stuff

The KDE has been removed but some how some of the font changed.
The font settings in the Appearance->Fonts are as they suppose to be (Sans,10...).

Mar 24, 2010Recently I had updated the kernel but afterwards I can't run virtualbox because the kernel modules aren't loaded.
Virtual box: 3.1.4 r57640 OpenSuse110-x86_64 Open Suse 11.0 running kernel-default-2.6.25.20-0.7
When I try to start vboxdrv manually I can find the message: kernel: warning: `VirtualBox' uses deprecated v2 capabilities in a way that may be insecure.
After I installed the older kernel-default-2.6.25.20-0.6 version I can start virtualbox.
But, much to my suprise, I also get this message with this kernel level. But still, the kerneldrivers are loaded and I can run virtualbox.
OpenSUSE :: KInternet Not Loaded At Startup/boot 11.2 / KDE 4.35?
Jun 17, 2010I do need KInternet to connect. Although if in the KInternet preferences I selected that KInternet should load automaticly at startup/boot, this just this doesn't happen. A workaround is possible, by placing an alias of KInternet on the desktop and clicking on that one after startup. However, couldn't I get it to load automaticly like it worked under 11.1 / KDE 3.5 ?

Jul 5, 2010I'm using opensuse 11.2 with a 64bit configuration (KDE 4.3.5). I have a playstation eye webcam that work's perfectly (just plug & play) but i have an annoying problem. The microphone of the webcam is not being loaded after every reboot but, after the os has booted, plug-off and then plug-in again, makes it work normally. I've googled and I have found some solutions, telling that it should be a modules problem not being loaded in the right sequence, or during shutting down or when switching on. The fact is that i couldn't apply that solutions cause they were for different systems.

Aug 22, 2010I just updated both my KDE 3.5.10 and KDE 4.5 today (OpenSuse 1.11). The problem that I have now is that the Plasma Desktop is loaded automatically after KDE 3.5 has started. So, depending on where I click or what I do, plasma and kdesktop fight for the control of my desktop.
I searched in every corners of my KDE 3.5 --and a bit in KDE 4 since somebody forced kdm4 on me-- but I haven't found who or what starts "plasma-desktop". Definitively not me! I can kill it safely but that's very irritating.

Jan 15, 2010I just finished installing a bunch of truetype fonts. After installing them, firefox is displaying "bradybunch" font when I search google.
The font settings are all serif and sans serif in both the system fonts settings and firefox settings.
I am using ubuntu 9.10.

Jul 3, 2011I have a folder with over 1500 fonts, I would like to move them to my /usr/share/fonts folder so that they can be used. Some are from Windows, some are just random extras. I've installed the msttcorefonts, but there are quite a few missing that make some wen pages look different.
How can I go about putting the fonts from my folder, into the appropriate /usr/share/fonts folder to be used? And how can I move them all? I can't drag and drop them, and mv FONT_NAME /usr/share/fonts for all of them will take a month or two. Is there a way to elevate my self to be able to just drag and drop them all? And which folder would they need to go into for them to be used in Chrome and Firefox?
OpenSUSE Install :: Where Is Grub Loaded On Dual-boot System
Jan 24, 2010I am currently rebuilding a couple laptops and a desktop to dual boot Windows and Suse 11.2. Windows is installed on partition 1. On the laptops, the build goes fine and dual boot with grub is OK. No issues. But on the desktop, the exact same build (after all the on-line updates, etc) fails with "Operating system not found" on the final (and first) boot. It seems that the Suse 11.2 build is somehow resetting the active partition and the boot does not see grub or Windows. When I reset partition #1 back to "active, only Windows loads. So I guess I need to fix this by reinstalling grub. Or use the Windows boot loader.
(1) Where is grub located on my system?
(2) What partiton is the Linux master Boot record If I wanted to use the Windows boot loader and do the following command to grab the 512 bytes I need:
dd if=/dev/sna? of=grub.bin bs=512 count=1
My partition layout is below. This is output from gdisk.exe in DOS7. It's an 80gig drive.
1 = Windows-7
2 = /boot
3 = swap

Feb 13, 2010I am trying to install 11.2 on a system with RAID-1 /boot partition and RAID-10 /(root) partition. I have done this before with 10.3 but am hitting a wall with 11.2. In particular, the boot image loads and then halts when it tries to load the RAID-10 root partition saying that the personality is not laoded. modprobe shows that the raid10 module does not appear to be part of the boot image. I cannot find anything in the installation that will allow me to specify a module to include in the init image. How do I tell the installer to include an additional module?

Jul 24, 2010I have an Acer 1551-4755 notebook with AR5B93 wireless chipset. ath9k is loaded and my card is detected as Atheros AR928X PCI-Express wireless network adapter. However, the ath9k driver is only allowing me to connect at 802.11g speed in spite of the fact that my WRT310N loaded with DD-WRT is in mixed mode. I am able to connect at wireless N speed with my D-Link DWA-130 usb dongle, but this is a rather backward solution. Is there a way to work around this issue, ie an updated ath9k or other madwifi driver? I would hate to resort to ndiswrapper for a natively supported chipset. I am using openSuSE 11.3 for the first time, long time Fedora user.

Contrary to many posts, mine did NOT work with either the standard rt2870sta module, nor the updated version from the driver:wireless repo. Also the rt2870 version from the ralink website didn' t work. After a days worth of Googling I came across this post. The bottom line?
1. Download rt3572 from the Ralink website.
2. Add {USB_DEVICE(0x1737,0x0079)}, /* WUSB600N v2 */ to common/rtusb_dev_id.c
3. Follow README_STA
I did not install firmware packages. And be sure the rt2800sta module doesn' t get loaded. (you could just remove it, I suppose.)

But when I want to use XP (yeah, sometimes I do that...), in about 40% of all cases it won't be loaded when chosen in GRUB. Just a black screen without anything else.Then I need to restart and in the 2nd trial it works!
