My gnome-panel is at the left side of my screen (I use the 'splendid' cairo-dock at the bottom of my screen). But when more than eight windows are open, the dock freezes. The 'Computer' button works, as well as the tray icons. My CPU rushes to 26% constantly. Solution is to kill gnome-panel and it reappears without complaining (if few than 8 windows open).

How do I resize the icons and or favorites panel, on the left side of F15.
Also I noticed that fedora 15 is casing my laptop to run hotter than windows 7.
I've tried some more recent builds of Libre Office from Alien Bob and I'm still getting crashes when I try to dock the Navigator panel on the left side of the window for any of the office applications.
Details are in this post. More specifically, I'm running libreoffice-3.2.99.3-i486 from Eric. When I run 'oowriter' (Libreoffice Writer) from the command line, and then try to dock the navigator panel, I get this message after the crash:

I don't know if it happens with the 64-bit version or not. I haven't tried it yet. I'm no stranger to submitting bug reports, but I haven't looked closely at Libreoffice's bug submitting procedures. I'll do that soon.

View 6 Replies View RelatedIf a file gets created in the user's Desktop folder, or if a drive is added to the machine and a Desktop icon is correspondingly created, they will by default appear on the left side of the desktop (unless, in the case of the latter, the specific drive has been created before and dragged to the right side, in which case GNOME will remember to put it in the same place).
Because I have a terminal window embedded onto my Desktop in the top left corner and occupying most of the screen), I keep my icons on the right side of the Desktop instead of the left (Mac style) - Any time I add a new drive or a file is sent to the Desktop, however, I have to kill the terminal window to be able to click on the icon, then drag it back to the right side, then restart the terminal.
Is there any way to tweak GNOME so that these icons are added from the top right corner and down instead of from the top left, automatically?
Seeing this on two systems that went through F13-F14 upgrade.

symptom: via right click on a gnome panel, perform "add to panel" and choose Dwell Click.
Gnome panel bites the dust with SIGSEGV at this point, restarts, and then you've got dwell click on the panel.
Anyone else seeing this, and better yet, have a solution?
I am using a widescreen monitor and prefer placing the panel on the left size. However, when there are more than 8 windows open at the same time, the window icons seemingly randomly shrink in size and form two columns. Selecting the windows on the panel takes several clicks and during each click the panel switches between the one column and two column states.

View 4 Replies View RelatedI was trying to customise my desktop, and I disabled gnome-panel as I don't need it (and auto-hide wasn't working). Now when I boot up I can't open anything as the "run" dialog using alt + q (changed shortcut from alt + f2) doesn't load, nor does the terminal via shortcuts. I'm using Compiz, and disabled nautilus drawing the desktop so Compiz could do it for me.
Do you know what I can do to get this back or to get the "run" dialog to open again? EDIT: Skype ran as start up, so I got a friend to send me a link, which opened my web browser. I then downloaded a file, and viewed it in nautilus which meant I could get to the terminal and run gnome-panel from there. I can now get it back easily when needed. Do you know if there is a way I can get the "run" dialog to work without needing the gnome-panel running?
I am starting to get more used to Fedora 15 and GNOME 3, but I still have one outstanding issue remaining. Before explaining the problem, I am using GNOME 3 in Fallback mode because I prefer the look and feel of the gnome-panel over the gnome-shell. Plus, I have performance issues using x11vnc in regular GNOME 3 mode that I do not see in Fallback mode. I cannot use Separate X Sessions (TwinView "0") and get the gnome-panel to launch without crashing. The gnome-panel works fine when I set the screen back to TwinView "1".

Imagine that you are at work using your computer. You lock the keyboard and you go home(you didn't turn it off). You go home and you login to work's computer. What I want to see is the same if I was just unlocking works's computer. IS that possible and how?
I have to say that I don't mind Unity all that much! Certainly not as much as I had expected to, given what I had been reading before the upgrade from Maverick. I'd like to go on playing around with it. However, I would also like to continue to be able to use Gnome 2 sometimes, with Compiz and Emerald, as I have done in the past.
The trouble is that whenever I log into the "Ubuntu classic" desktop, it loads compiz, complete with the Unity plugin. Then I have to disable the Unity plugin manually every time, and do the same (with no panel) whenever I log into Unity.
Is there a way I can configure it to only load the Unity plugin in the Unity desktop, but not in the Gnome 2 desktop?
Is there any possible way to fix this problem? And I honestly think this is one of the dumbest changes ubuntu have ever done.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI noticed it after booting a Linux Mint-10- live usb, and had to do a hard reboot. My grub resolution has always been 640x480. after booting to the live usb & hard reboot(rseiub didn't work), the menu is shifted to the left and I can't see the left side of it anymore. About 1" of the words are not showing.I've changed the resolution to 800x600 and I can see it now, but wonder why it happened and how to get it back the way it was. Not sure what else may have been affected.
View 7 Replies View RelatedI am suddenly getting about 1.5" of the left side of my desktop on the right, covering what SHOULD be there. I thought it might be my gDESKLETS as I had problems with this newer version before but removing it didn't help, so unless it is leaving something that is causing it, I don't see this being it. & I haven't done or added anything else, that I can think of, that may be behind this. I AM running the default drivers for the nVIDIA card, but all seemed OK until recently.
This happens the most if I run a application in a reduced size window or run a ..... video full screen. Rebooting seems to clear the problem for the ..... & max then min the window clears it for that. I'm using gnome on F14.
On Windows, the widget set for windows is on the right and the widget order is minimise, fullscreen, close. Linux in general (And Ubuntu's themes specifically) *generally* mirrored this.On OSX, the widgets are on the left and the order is close, minimise, fullscreen.On Ubuntu 10.4 the widget set has been moved to the left hand side, but is just a move of the standard windows order. Is it possible (in a way that won't break future themes or edits, so by using the GUI preferrably but I can't find any option) to change the widget ordering?
I like the Dust Sand theme fondow borders etc, which doesn't actually show icon differences for the 3, just 3 dots. As a user of Windows and OSX as well as Ubuntu I keep finding myself clicking the wrong one as my brain just expects them to be in the OSX order when on the left (it just makes sense in my head for close to be on the outside edge, whichever side that may be, and for minimiseo come beformaximise/fullscreen when reading left-right). I realise other people may (and probably will) disagree with me on this, especially non-mac users, so it'd be preferable to be able to customise the order rather than force one or the other on people.
Just upgraded Ubuntu.....now I find that the minimise and maximise icons are on the left hand side. Is there a way to get them to the right hand side?
View 9 Replies View RelatedI have installed following this guide [URL]... x_and_Mac_OS/X but I have an hp g71 349wm with intel chipsets, on ubuntu 10.10 I can't use nvidia, my system hates me if I try to install those drivers, that guide says I need either nvidia or ati drivers, I have not tried to get ati drivers going as when I tried to get nvidia going, my system totally crashed and ended up being totally unrecoverable for some reason, anyway my problem is that after installing pylotro and lotro and patching, I start it up and all I get is a big black square on the top left side of my screen.. no idea what to do to make this work. the only way to get rid of the square is to reboot.

I'm using KDE 4 under Slackware 13.1, and I'd like to move the minimize, maximize, and close buttons to the left side of the windows titlebar. Is there any way to do this on KDE? I've looked under all the windows options, and the 'Buttons' section only contained a list that didn't seem to have what I was looking for.I've only been using KDE for a couple of weeks, so I apologize if the answer is obvious, or if moving the buttons to the left is simply not an option. Any help would be appreciated.

How do I add a new printer? CUPS asks for root's password, which is unknown/undefined. I tried sudo, but I'm not in the sudoers file. Catch 22? How do I add an application to the launcher on the left side of the screen? Drag & Drop does not appear to be available. How do I get back to the standard Gnome desktop?
View 9 Replies View RelatedOn top of the what's installed from the Debian 6.01 live CD I add the secuirty updates and a small number of programs (Audacity, OpenShot, AbiWord, get_iplayer, ripit and SMPlayer). Because at present while in a phase of distro-hopping I tend to fiddle a bit with new distros and reinstall them more often than spend time undoing a more complex mess, can the added programs be stored so that they don't need to be downloaded again,o the dependencies complicate this or make it impossible? I'm imagining hopefully some folder of .deb files that exist after downloading that I can put on a CD for repeated use. Sorry if I'm being naive.
If this can be done, a jargon-free set of steps would be much appreciated. I use Mobile Broadband with a low monthly limit so it will help. Though I forget the method now, I did once when using Linux Mint use some 'script' that would enable me to put programs on a CD to download at my parents' home when I had no internet, but it was hit and miss it seemed, with missing dependencies galore.
