I do need KInternet to connect. Although if in the KInternet preferences I selected that KInternet should load automaticly at startup/boot, this just this doesn't happen. A workaround is possible, by placing an alias of KInternet on the desktop and clicking on that one after startup. However, couldn't I get it to load automaticly like it worked under 11.1 / KDE 3.5 ?

I recently switched desktops. Kinternet connects fine with Gnome, but it doesn't start up with Gnome. I tried putting kinternet into the Gnome startup, but kinternet errors when it starts.
I got autostart working on 11.2/gnome, but I've switch to kde4.3.1. Duncan on the kde list suggested to manually save a session, but in the session manager there's not a clue how to manually save a session. In gnome I wrote a shell script to start kinternet, but the script has to start after smpppd. That script starts too soon in kde4.The reasoon kinternet doesn't start with the "restart on login" box, is a kde3 app. I have already tried kinternet --kicker, but apparetly kicker starts before smpppd. The script I wrote starts kinternet but with this error:
Error - KInternet Connection to local and remote server refused. Maybe smpppd is not running or you are not member of the group "dialout". Also check the server settings in the dialog "Various Settings". OK
The error to the calling shell looks like this:

Well I got the Persistent openSUSE11.2 working. However I cannot find a way to obtain kinternet. for some reason it is NOT on the liveCD! Is there another program that I can use to connect to the repos so that I can get kinternet? I have a liveDC and an install DVD. can I install from the DVD onto the USB so that when I boot with the USB, Kinternet is available for further downloads?
View 1 Replies View RelatedI am currently rebuilding a couple laptops and a desktop to dual boot Windows and Suse 11.2. Windows is installed on partition 1. On the laptops, the build goes fine and dual boot with grub is OK. No issues. But on the desktop, the exact same build (after all the on-line updates, etc) fails with "Operating system not found" on the final (and first) boot. It seems that the Suse 11.2 build is somehow resetting the active partition and the boot does not see grub or Windows. When I reset partition #1 back to "active, only Windows loads. So I guess I need to fix this by reinstalling grub. Or use the Windows boot loader.
(1) Where is grub located on my system?
(2) What partiton is the Linux master Boot record If I wanted to use the Windows boot loader and do the following command to grab the 512 bytes I need:
dd if=/dev/sna? of=grub.bin bs=512 count=1
My partition layout is below. This is output from gdisk.exe in DOS7. It's an 80gig drive.

I'm new to openSUSE and yesterday I managed to multi-boot successfully with version 11.1 for 64 bit processor (live cd).I have a MultiTech multimodem-usb (MT5634ZBA-USB)and have it running fine in two other LINUX distros using KPPP as well as wvdial. To try and get it working in SUSE, I went to YaST administrative tools for network devices (I think that was section, as I have to recall from memory or write it down since I can't connect from openSUSE, so bear with me) and chose modem and it detected the modem correctly as ttyACM0. My isp uses a dynamic address, and that is what is ticked in ISP information. Default Route is also ticked, though I'm unsure what that setting is for. I enter the phone number, the authorization name (ex. me@myispdotnet) and pretty much choose the default settings for the rest of the modem and provider set up. It shows kernel interface: modem 0. I let YaST finish configuring it, and I see kinternet icon and click on it and it dials up successfully, all lights on my modem are lit up, the icon plug is joined, and I can see it try to ping but fails (I can't surf in konqueror or firefox). When I look at kinternet log, it states name server failureno name server found in /etc/resolv.confI know how to use wvdial so I tried that alternative dial up tool and it also says name server not found.
I tried adding the SUSE nameservers in the network device set up GUI as it has a place to add two nameservers, but when I did that, the modem wouldn't dial out. When I logged back into openSUSE, there was no kinternet icon in the bottom toolbar, so I clicked on kinternet under applications, and it said:Error KinternetConnection to local and remote server refused. Maybe your smppd is not running or you are not a member of group dial out.I went to YaST>system services and smppd enabled yes. I also checked user settings and I am a member of group for dialout.That is the only group I am a member of as I didn't want to change anything there, not yet. I tried reconfiguring my modem again to see if I could get kinternet up and running, but it wouldn't show up in the bottom bar and the error above would show whenever I clicked on kinternet under applications.
The only how to I found was this, but I don't know how to edit a read-only file in openSUSE. I'm familair with kdesu and gksu, but not using vi to edit a read only file.as I have been spending hours on this and getting no where. If kppp worked, I'd install it and use it, but I need a connection first to get it. But I guess if wvdial doesn't work, then kppp won't either until the nameserver issue is resolved.Should I edit the resolv.conf file and add the nameservers manually? Again, I'm not sure how to do this as root in openSUSE.
Why does it take almost 700 MB of automatic changes when trying to one-click install qinternet (223 KB?) I Got to the forum to ask this question by using rcsmpppd and then wvdial. Those programs are ok but they provide no progress bar/speed meter.
Also does anyone know why qinternet was dropped from the 11.4 - KDE distro? What a pain for us poor old 56K modem bound souls here in the sticks of Texas! Hope you meet some of you at the Texas LinuxFest, April 2,2011 at the Hilton-downtown!

I recently installed kinternet from a repository and when I enter Menu -> Applications -> Internet, there is no kinternet application.
I need this, to display the icon in the tray bar, so I can see if Internet is connected or not, and if it isn't I connect clicking on the icon.

View 3 Replies View RelatedI was messing around with my newly installed Archlinux, in a virtual machine (thankfully not my main computer) and now I cannot boot up. The issue is, I read that I could add commands in the rc.local file so that they would be automatically executed after booting up... so, I added the "pacman -Syu" command there, but it usually asks for a confirmation to continue, and that's why I think it is getting stuck there (it gets stuck just after running the daemons).
So, is there a way to stop the rc.local file to be loaded at startup?
I just burned the iso of openSUSe 11.4 onto a dvd, and I make it through all of the installation. At the end it reboots the computer and starts in the kernel/command line or whatever you call it. I think it's kernel. Anyway, it asks for my username and password and then it says like "have fun.." () or something and then just has like my directory or whatever waiting for commands. Is there some command to start up the OS?
View 9 Replies View RelatedI'm trying to prevent a few modules from loading at boot, like i.e. bluetooth, sco, bnep, btusb, usb_storage and uvcvideo, so I blacklisted them in /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist.conf but they still get loaded. I've checked that I unload all of the ones depending on eachother so that shouldn't be the problem, I think. Does anyone know what I'm supposed to do to really prevent them from loading?

View 4 Replies View RelatedMy sysctl.conf in /etc isn't loaded at boot, it does however get parsed with the command # sysctl -p I believe this problem started when I got the 3.0.0 kernel just a few days ago. Does everyone has this problem? Then it's probably a bug.

I Installed Fedora 14 about 2 weeks ago and was just settling into using it more or les permanantly and had to turn of the power to do some maintenanace. When I rebooted I got the grub> prompt. View 5 Replies View RelatedI have installed RipperX and the Lame MP3 encoder, as well as Oggenc. I noticed that Ripperx plugins are loaded at boot. The thing which concerns me is that there are multiple instances of a plugin witht the same name showing in system monitor( or ps command). There are about 15 processes alone with the name "plugin-Lame."

Are these actually different? Or do I really have redundant instances running? I'm concerned because I have an old system with limited RAM, and all the plugins together make an impact. If they are all neccessary and needed for RipperX, is there a way to have them load up when RipperX is started, rather than at boot-time?

After RIP linux has booted I would like to automatically mount the USB drive that RIPLinux/Tinycore was booted from. I need help detecting which device this is.

Virtual box: 3.1.4 r57640 OpenSuse110-x86_64 Open Suse 11.0 running kernel-default-2.6.25.20-0.7
When I try to start vboxdrv manually I can find the message: kernel: warning: `VirtualBox' uses deprecated v2 capabilities in a way that may be insecure.
After I installed the older kernel-default-2.6.25.20-0.6 version I can start virtualbox.
But, much to my suprise, I also get this message with this kernel level. But still, the kerneldrivers are loaded and I can run virtualbox.
I'm using opensuse 11.2 with a 64bit configuration (KDE 4.3.5). I have a playstation eye webcam that work's perfectly (just plug & play) but i have an annoying problem. The microphone of the webcam is not being loaded after every reboot but, after the os has booted, plug-off and then plug-in again, makes it work normally. I've googled and I have found some solutions, telling that it should be a modules problem not being loaded in the right sequence, or during shutting down or when switching on. The fact is that i couldn't apply that solutions cause they were for different systems.

The problem that I have now is that the Plasma Desktop is loaded automatically after KDE 3.5 has started. So, depending on where I click or what I do, plasma and kdesktop fight for the control of my desktop.
I searched in every corners of my KDE 3.5 --and a bit in KDE 4 since somebody forced kdm4 on me-- but I haven't found who or what starts "plasma-desktop". Definitively not me! I can kill it safely but that's very irritating.
How do you find out which driver is being used for a certain device. Say that I run lsusb and I find "Bus 007 Device 002: ID 046d:c043 Logitech, Inc. MX320/MX400 Laser Mouse", how can I find out what the active driver for the device is?Also, is there some way to list all available drivers for a device? Is there a way to change the driver at runtime?
View 1 Replies View RelatedI am trying to install 11.2 on a system with RAID-1 /boot partition and RAID-10 /(root) partition. I have done this before with 10.3 but am hitting a wall with 11.2. In particular, the boot image loads and then halts when it tries to load the RAID-10 root partition saying that the personality is not laoded. modprobe shows that the raid10 module does not appear to be part of the boot image. I cannot find anything in the installation that will allow me to specify a module to include in the init image. How do I tell the installer to include an additional module?
View 3 Replies View RelatedI have an Acer 1551-4755 notebook with AR5B93 wireless chipset. ath9k is loaded and my card is detected as Atheros AR928X PCI-Express wireless network adapter. However, the ath9k driver is only allowing me to connect at 802.11g speed in spite of the fact that my WRT310N loaded with DD-WRT is in mixed mode. I am able to connect at wireless N speed with my D-Link DWA-130 usb dongle, but this is a rather backward solution. Is there a way to work around this issue, ie an updated ath9k or other madwifi driver? I would hate to resort to ndiswrapper for a natively supported chipset. I am using openSuSE 11.3 for the first time, long time Fedora user.

Contrary to many posts, mine did NOT work with either the standard rt2870sta module, nor the updated version from the driver:wireless repo. Also the rt2870 version from the ralink website didn' t work. After a days worth of Googling I came across this post. The bottom line?
1. Download rt3572 from the Ralink website.
2. Add {USB_DEVICE(0x1737,0x0079)}, /* WUSB600N v2 */ to common/rtusb_dev_id.c
3. Follow README_STA
I did not install firmware packages. And be sure the rt2800sta module doesn' t get loaded. (you could just remove it, I suppose.)

managed to get things working so well on my laptop i thought i'd install ubuntu onto an external drive so i can boot to either xp or Ubuntu whenever i want, when i started up after the install it doesn't recognise the drive i loaded it to and appears to have lost the link to xp. the exact words are:
