OpenSUSE Wireless :: Linksys WUSB600N V2 Module Doesn't Get Loaded

Jan 18, 2011

After much tiddling'n'fiddling I finally got my new Linksys WUSB600N v2 working. Contrary to many posts, mine did NOT work with either the standard rt2870sta module, nor the updated version from the driver:wireless repo. Also the rt2870 version from the ralink website didn' t work. After a days worth of Googling I came across this post. The bottom line?

1. Download rt3572 from the Ralink website.
2. Add {USB_DEVICE(0x1737,0x0079)}, /* WUSB600N v2 */ to common/rtusb_dev_id.c
3. Follow README_STA

I did not install firmware packages. And be sure the rt2800sta module doesn' t get loaded. (you could just remove it, I suppose.)

OpenSUSE Wireless :: Linksys WUSB600N (rt2870) - Insmod: Error Inserting 'rt2870sta.ko': -1 Invalid Module Format

May 24, 2009

I'm new to openSUSE and as a matter of fact, to linux too. I've got a Linksys WUSB600N wireless adapter which used to work fine with some live versions of linux that I was testing out before moving onto suse... Each time, upon booting using live CDs, I used to copy the driver I had downloaded from:

SpeedShare - Download rt2870-kernel-2.6.24-nemesis.tar.bz2

Then 'make' and get into the driver's os/linux directory to load the driver using 'insmod rt2870sta.ko' Now, upon doing a 'make' and 'make install', followed by the 'insmod rt2870sta.ko', I get the error saying:

insmod: error inserting 'rt2870sta.ko': -1 Invalid module format

I tried doing 'modprobe -rv rt2870sta' and didn't get any error messages. But while doing 'modprobe -v', this error shows up: insmod /lib/modules/2.6.27.7-9-default/kernel/drivers/net/wireless/rt2870sta.ko
FATAL: Error inserting rt2870sta (/lib/modules/2.6.27.7-9-default/kernel/drivers/net/wireless/rt2870sta.ko): Invalid module format

OpenSUSE Wireless :: Install Linksys WUSB600n Dual-band USB Wireless-N Adapter Onto A Desktop System With 11.1 Installed

Apr 27, 2009

I'm trying to install a Linksys WUSB600n dual-band USB wireless-N adapter onto a desktop system with opensuse 11.1 installed; this system will be migrating to a back porch with no cabling access, hence the wireless solution. Everything works fine under Windows XP, but on Linux, not so much. Hardware info is as follows; there is no "Wireless LAN" entry, but there is a USB entry:

info.subsystem = 'usb_device'

OpenSUSE Hardware :: Linksys WUSB600N And 11.2 - Ifconfig Doesn't Show A New Network Interface

Jan 24, 2010

I have a laptop running 11.2 with an internal Broadcom-based Wi-Fi card that's working fine. I'm trying to get 802.11n going with the WUSB600N. The USB ID on this device is 1737:0079. I believe this means it's a "V2" with an RT3572 chip.

No driver loads for this device when it's plugged in. If I do a "modprobe rt2870sta", a driver loads, and syslog shows "rtusb init" and "usbcore: registered new interface driver rt2870". But ifconfig -a doesn't show a new network interface. I've also tried building the RT3572 driver from the manufacturer's web site. It builds fine, and modprobe will load it, but I get the same results as the rt2870sta driver.

Fedora Hardware :: Linksys WUSB600N Wireless Usb Device 15

May 27, 2011

I started a fedora 15 live cd last night, and at the top right corner, i noticed that wireless was not active. Right mouse button on the internet icon showed me that fedoar recognized the usb device as it is,, a Linksys WUSB600N wireless lan.

However, fedora warned me that the firmware was not available, therefore i was not able to configure the WUSB600N. To be specific,, it's the V2 version.

My question is,, does this device work with linux fedora? i assume that i need to install the required firmware in order to use the device.

OpenSUSE Wireless :: Ath9k Module Loaded But Can't Connect To 802.11n Network?

Jul 24, 2010

I have an Acer 1551-4755 notebook with AR5B93 wireless chipset. ath9k is loaded and my card is detected as Atheros AR928X PCI-Express wireless network adapter. However, the ath9k driver is only allowing me to connect at 802.11g speed in spite of the fact that my WRT310N loaded with DD-WRT is in mixed mode. I am able to connect at wireless N speed with my D-Link DWA-130 usb dongle, but this is a rather backward solution. Is there a way to work around this issue, ie an updated ath9k or other madwifi driver? I would hate to resort to ndiswrapper for a natively supported chipset. I am using openSuSE 11.3 for the first time, long time Fedora user.

Ubuntu Networking :: Cannot Connect To Network Using Linksys Wusb600n V2

Jul 16, 2011

My OS is Linux Xubuntu 11.04 (32 bits) and I'm trying to get Linksys Wusb600n network adapter to work. I followed this post and did all that was written in it... almost. When i came to blacklisting, I blacklisted all drivers that starts with rtx (where x is any digit). Here are lines that I pasted in blacklist.conf:

Code:
blacklist rt2860sta
blacklist rt2870sta
blacklist rt2x00usb
blacklist rt2500usb
blacklist rt73usb
blacklist rt2800usb
blacklist rt2x00lib
blacklist rt2x00pci
[Code].....

The problem: I do see all available networks. So I guess... it somehow works. Anyway, problem is that it does not connect successfully to my network. I click on it - it asks my password. I enter it and click 'Connect'. Nothing, except that network icon is started to like spin around (trying to connect, I guess), happens. After few minutes, it asks for password.... again. I enter it and all starts from the beginning. Its like a loop! Note: I don't have any other things installed except linux-firmware-nonfree_1.9_all.deb and, don't know how successfully, but RT3572USB 2.5.0.0.

OpenSUSE Wireless :: WLAN Module Doesn't Load Automatically At Boot - 11.4 KDE X86_64?

After each boot I must execute the following commands to remove ssd and load the Broadcom driver:

rmmod ssb
modprobe lib80211
modprobe wl

Ubuntu Networking :: Linksys WUSB600N Rev 1 Should "just Work" With 11.04

May 4, 2011

I see a bunch of posts about WUSB600N, often telling folks to download and compile proprietary drivers from ralink's website. With Ubuntu 11.04, getting WUSB600N to work might be as simple as disabling rt2870sta (for rev1). If you have rev 2 card, driver to disable is I believe rt3572sta. Even if you need to recompile drivers by hand, the right thing to do is to first try nightly build of rt2x00 drivers from [URL], and fall back to ralink provided drivers only if things do not work out with rt2x00 drivers. I saw recent updates on rt2x00 mailing list for rt3572 chip, give it a try if you have rev 2 card.

WUSB600N rev 1 (rt2870 chip) should "just work" with rt2x00 driver included with 2.6.38 kernel in Ubuntu 11.04. At least it works for me. You may need to blacklist rt2870sta driver from staging directory so that it does not load and interfere with rt2x00 drivers. There's one small annoying issue with power save mode on rt2870 chip when rt2x00 is in use, which seems to have just been fixed upstream. Most users will never notice it, but if you do notice card re-connecting to AP every 10-20 minutes or so, simply disable power saving, and all will be smooth (iwconfig wlan0 power off). If you have an older Ubuntu release (kernel 2.6.35) and rev 1 card, you should be able to download nightly build of rt2x00 driver from [URL]. It worked for me just fine with previous Ubuntu releases.

Networking :: "wireless Repeater" - Plug-in A Linksys USB Stick Doesn't Work

Mar 13, 2010

I have a DSL modem with four ports and a built-in wireless router downstairs. It works great: I have wired Ethernet for my PCs downstairs (all plugged in directly to the DSL modem); my son has great wireless access upstairs (using the built-in wireless in his laptop). PROBLEM: I want to add another, desktop, PC upstairs. I've been trying to use wireless, with a plug-in a Linksys USB stick. It doesn't work worth crap.

I'm considering a) getting another phone jack upstairs, and moving my DSL modem there, or b) stringing some CAT-5 cable from the modem downstairs to the PC upstairs. Putting a wireless PCI card in my upstairs desktop PC might also solve the problem, but the PC only has one PCI slot, and I'd rather keep it free, if at all possible.

QUESTION: Is there any kind of "wireless repeater", where I can a) get wireless access from my DSL modem/wireless base station downstairs, and b) give me some spare Ethernet ports, so I can plug in desktop PC (so the PC can have a wired Ethernet connection)? POSSIBLE SOLUTION: I have an old Linksys WRT54G router that I'm not using. Q: Is there any way to configure it for this purpose? Q: Would it be possible to use it for this purpose if I installed OpenWRT?

OpenSUSE Wireless :: Linksys Card Not Working Properly

Jan 30, 2010

I read through the sticky of wireless card not working, and I followed through with the steps, with the exception of looking for firmware, because I'm certain it has it, being that the card works when I'm running Windows, and overall the system recognizes the device.

The only difference is, I notice that the activity light on the card itself does not turn on when running openSUSE. It recognizes the card, it even detects the network, but when I enter the WEP key and finish, it does nothing afterwards. Still no internet.

OpenSUSE Wireless :: Linksys WPC300N Not Recognized As Eth1?

Mar 13, 2010

I have a Linksys WPC300N v1 "Wireless-N Notebook Adapter" which uses the Broadcom 4329 chipset. Is there a way to troubleshoot and configure this card to use wl, b43, ssb? Preferrably via CLI. I have a couple years of CLI experience in Debian/derivatives (but only in my spare time ).

I have this card recognized and running adequately in Debian (and derivatives) using the 'wl' driver (sometimes supplied by debian.org, other times by broadcom.com). The one hint at a solution for this particular card/chipset I have found searching the OpenSUSE (SuSE for short?) forum points me to using ndiswrapper, which I've never used nor care to if it requires wine. I'm trying to ultimately connect to a b/g/n WPA-1 TKIP wlan.

lspci -v:
03:00.0 Network controller: Broadcom Corporation BCM43XG (rev 01)
Subsystem: Linksys Device 0058
Flags: fast devsel, IRQ 11
Memory at f4000000 (32-bit, non-prefetchable) [disabled] [size=16K]
lsmod | grep 'ssb' returns nothing (neither do 'b43' or 'wl') but 'pcmcia' returns:
pcmcia_core 41748 3 pcmcia,yenta_socket,rsrc_nonstatic

When configuring this card in Debian, I first plugged in the card which resulted in some hard disk activity but the LED was not lit. After installing the driver, the LED came on but no network. After configuring the network, it works 'adequately' (no roaming mode) using the wpa_supplicant package and is readily identified during init.

This is not mission critical by any means so I'm not in a hurry and willing to try almost anything. However, this is an old laptop so I'm even somewhat surprised that KDE4 is running as well as it is (KDE 3.5.10 runs quite well, which is more than I can say for the latest Gnome DE; xfce "screams" relatively). Dell Latitude C-610 PIII-M 1.2 GHz 512 KB cache 512 MB RAM (YaST2 reports this as a C-640 but this does not agree with the BIOS splash). The display is an ATI Radeon LY using the 'radeon' server (default). I don't do compositing here. ;-)

OpenSUSE Wireless :: How To Access 5GHz Channels On Linksys Card

Jun 19, 2010

I installed the Linksys WMP600N dual band card on my OpenSuSE 11.2 box using the SuSE supplied rt2860 driver. With the 2.4GHz channels this works out of the box. However, I am unable to access the 5GHz channels. iwlist says:

Leatherstocking:/home/bergue # iwlist wlan0 channel
wlan0 13 channels in total; available frequencies :
Channel 01 : 2.412 GHz
Channel 02 : 2.417 GHz
Channel 03 : 2.422 GHz
Channel 04 : 2.427 GHz
Channel 05 : 2.432 GHz
Channel 06 : 2.437 GHz
Channel 07 : 2.442 GHz
Channel 08 : 2.447 GHz
Channel 09 : 2.452 GHz
Channel 10 : 2.457 GHz
Channel 11 : 2.462 GHz
Channel 12 : 2.467 GHz
Channel 13 : 2.472 GHz
Current Frequency:2.432 GHz (Channel 5)

Setting a 5GH channel with iwconfig doesn't work. iwpriv doesn't work either:
iwpriv wlan0 set WirelessMode=6
wlan0 no private ioctls.

Changing any settings in /etc/Wireless/RT2860STA/RT2860STA.dat doesn't seem to have any effect at all. The driver supplied by SuSE is of version 1.8. On the Ralink website a newer driver of version 2.3 is available; but so far I didn't manage to install it because I am not a C expert. However, the 5GHz channels should be accessible by the older 1.8 version driver. Somehow I suspect that in the SuSE distribution some dynamic parameters are hardcoded and therefore the whole thing fails.

I have installed Suse 11.4 from the Gnome liveCD, and I "can" access my home network when it is unsecured, however, I can't access it when WEP is turned on. Now, I know that WEP is insecure but there are devices on the network that only supports WEP so the router settings can't be changed. Also just for testing purposes i have tried the WPA2 encryption method to no avail (dmesg reports that the connection timed out). The only encryption method that looks promising is the open-wep encryption. When trying to connect to the network (with open-wep turned on) I have performed a bit of checking to see what is going on, now I don't know much about in-depth linux and stuff but, below are the outputs from lsusb, dmesg, iwconfig, and ifconfig.
