In Fedora Core 15 using Gnome 3, the font(s) used to label each icon on the desktop looks bad on my LCD monitor. It looks like small parts of the letters are missing. Can this font be improved?

Intermittently I loose the icons in the menus, they all go black.
I can see the pop-up message / text if I float my mouse where the icons should be, but do not see the icons.
This obviously makes it hard to use the menus =)
If I log out and back in the icons come back.
The icons do NOT come back if switch user or restart gnome (alt-F2 -> r).
I have noticed in my pc (i386) and my ps3 (ppc64) under FC12 gnome 2.28 that some icons from some menus doesn't always appear, like in:
Places: Connect Server | Search for Files
System: all
"User name": all
Is this some sort of bug? Or I have done something wrong?
I just did a clean install of fedora 14 on a dell precision 690 (multiprocessor system, with buckets of memory--16gb). It is old, but a great machine. It is dual boot to windows, but that is probably irrelevant. Note, the reason I did the clean install was the exact problem I report here had cropped up on this system running fedora 14, but I was having kluged together the system after grub issues, so i blamed it on something unrelated and hoped a clean install would solve this.
After installing the system, running updates, etc., I installed open office, and virtualbox. I then set up two virtual machines in virtual box, both Win XP, and added my favorite windows applications. that may not be relevant, but that is the history. I added a couple pieces of high end software too, which required some odd libraries--libgdal and libexpat.
After a couple of of days of using the machine, I tried to run open office (after having used it several times, and logged off several times) and it wouldn't execute. I then realized that all of my desktop icons had disappeared. I then experimented and realized several other applications wouldn't execute from the gnome applications menu. however, I could execute anything I wanted from the command line in a terminal.
I read a suggestion in the forums to create a new user. painful process, but that did indeed solve the problem (temporarily). But then the problem repeated with the new user. So now, this really sucks and I'm cursing fedora. After consulting my linux geek brother, I tried something else--I loaded kde, and tried that. (btw--why doesn't ctl-alt-backspace allow you to switch windows managers in this linux?)
Anyway, kde works fine with everything except open office--it still won't run for some reason, even in kde.
Strangely, my virtual machines worked throughout all this. that is, I could execute virtualbox from gnome, everything runs fine.
I hooked up Lucid to a 50" and adjusted the resolution to the max. Gives a clearer sharper picture but all the displayed items are tiny. Is there something I need to do that I haven't? I went from 1086x720 to 1400(approx)x900(approx) and created the problem. Now I'm back at 1086x720. I'm using the Nvidia 195 drivers.

View 4 Replies View RelatedI've only recently started using Fedora a couple months ago. I used Ubuntu for a few years before. I'm posting because I have a strange graphical glitch in gnome shell. For some reason, this glitch did not appear when I was using Gnome 3 with ubuntu, and I didn't notice it on the F15 Live CD.
There appears to be an artifact (looks like a crack) in my shell. It only appears when the icons fade if I'm scrolled down in the applications menu. Similar artifacts appear in the gnome shell notifications, such as the messaging notifications. I have a ATI Radeon HD 3650 graphics card and am using the default drivers. NOT the proprietary fglrx/catalyst/whatever driver. I've attached a pic.
I finally performed my upgrade from Karmic today, everything went smooth and looked great. I decided to check out how KDE looked so I logged out, went into KDE and poked around for a bit then went back to GNOME. All my fonts are now that horrible tiny KDE font and I cannot, for the life of me, figure out how to return the fonts to their previous glory.
Can anyone, please, point me in the right direction? I've totally removed KDE from my system, I took all the files out of ~.fontconfig and set antialiasing to false in /etc/fonts/conf.avail/10-antialias.conf but still no joy. I haven't found the settings to get back to default but I've installed the MS font pack which looks better than the KDE stuff
The freebie MS fonts are not loaded in v11.2 with the Gnome desktop. (This is a new installation, not an upgrade from an earlier version.)
View 7 Replies View RelatedI have used a patched Cairo in 11.2 from Packman and the fonts were excellent. Now I upgraded to 11.3 and installed freetype from subpixel repo. While I have good fonts in Qt now, in Gnome still they are bad. There is no patched Cairo in Packman for 11.3 Installing the patched Cairo for 11.2 from Packman and from Ubuntu-patch project did not help

The KDE has been removed but some how some of the font changed.
The font settings in the Appearance->Fonts are as they suppose to be (Sans,10...).
opensuse v11.2 The Gnome help describes how to install fonts: copy the font files to </usr/share/fonts>. I have some Type1 fonts with PFB, PFM, AFM and sometimes INF face files. The only ones I see in the <Type1> directory are AFM and PFA. Which font files does Gnome actually require? Is a PFA needed? Are the font files moved/deleted from </usr/share/fonts/> after installation? Is there a more obvious way to install fonts in Gnome?

Whatever I do in appearance-fonts, all gnome applications follow the settings from KDE Personal Settings. (Application Appearance -> Fonts)
I lost all the subpixel hinting, and I finally just found out that if I set it in KDE Personal Settings it actually affects gnome applications. (I'm in GNOME now)

My problem, however, is that on the current version of GNOME that I am running in Squeeze, when I click on "Appearances", there is no "Interface" tab! What do I do about this? Certain icons are missing because of this.
I have not used OpenSUSE for some time, but I am running 11.4 32 bit on my laptop now. The system runs fine and stable, but I am surprised to find icons missing for a few applications. They've never been there, like if they are missing from the rpm they are installed from.

When I boot and just before I enter my password If I select "Gnome" in bottom task bar, when my desktop boots there are no short cut icon on the desktop. If I select "Failsafe Gnome" when the desktop boots all is fine.Why is this Happening. I have searched the file system and found a folder called "default.kde4" in /usr/share/icons. I assume this is where KDE applications pull their icons from. Firstly, this folder is a linked folder. How do i find out where the original folder that it is linked to is? Secondly, i am assuming, that the KDE icons won't be a name for name match for the icons i am using in Gnome (Faenza just in case anyone is curious). What is the easiest way to get the KDE icons changed for the one's i am using in Gnome?

View 4 Replies View Relatedyesterday I upgraded my Fedora installation via preupgrade from 11 to 12.Now there are some icons missing! If I go to the 'System' menu in the panel, there are no icons at all.If then I select the 'Settings' submenu, all of its icons are visible.I figured out that the package redhat-menus and fedora-icon-theme make up the representation of this icons and reinstalled them. Then I additionally executed 'gdk-pixbuf-query-loaders-64 > /etc/gtk-2.0/x86_64-redhat-linux-gnu/gdk-pixbuf.loaders' (I read this somewhere in the forum).
But nothing happend so far?!
I made further efforts trying to find out the icon of the System Configuration Menu (Syst -> Administration). The file '/usr/share/desktop-directories/SystemConfig.directory' contains the icon that should be displayed for the System->Administration menu. This file contains the line: Icon=preferences-system Good so far.I thought that selecting the gnome icon theme would fix this problem, but this also didn't help!Now I'm at the end of my knowledge (or I don't want to rename single icons to match the names required)...

At the moment it seems that the mime-type is the overriding factor for displaying the icon in Dolphin and Konqueror rather than any content. There appears to be something for GNOME for this.
