View 9 RepliesI'm using OS11.3 64bits with KDE 4.6.1 and its working fine.
Would anyone recommend me to do an upgrade to 11.4 or wait? If 11.4 is good, then would anyone recommend me to do a network upgrade, or clean installation?
My bluetooth seems to be activated in the system tray when I start the computer, can I disable this?.I do not want my computer to be visible to other computers if you know what I mean.Is it still safe even if the icon shows, Iam a little afraid someone might be able to hack the system this way? If itś still safe having it this way I dont really need to turn it of guess im a litlle paranoid because i never use bluetooth
there is something called show bluetooth icon when you click on Preferences in the menu is that a way to disable it?usually i used the quick keys on my keyboard but they don't seems to work in opensuse
My old desktop had a power supply that was going bad, so instead of replacing it again I decided to buy a new PC Desktop. So I ordered from TigerDirect.com and got a grodd AMD computer without a operating system on it as I didn't want that Windows 7 scheisse on it. So I downloaded SuSe 11.4 64 bit, and installed it last night.
At this point I will tell you the new PC has an NVIDIA GeForce 61100 GPU for graphics with 128 mb memory. Also I use an HP W2007 wide display monitor running 1680 by 1050 resolution, that I got over 3 years ago when I was running SuSe 10.2.
So during installation last night of 11.4 when it did the first boot after install, is when I first saw the symptom which is an illegible white screen, with about 100 3 mm lines on it. So I shut down, rebooted and brought it up safe mode and all is fine. The error screen only appears if I boot GRUB with the Desktop or Xen option and only when the boot would switch to display my desktop.
I recall a similar illegible video monitor issue when I first got the display over 3 years ago, and fixed it by changing a SuSe video configuration option, but being I am getting old and I didn't write down what the configuration file was I am at a loss. All my previous SuSe installations never had a problem as I would always choose the Update rather than new install option thus that configuration file was brought across the many releases installations. This video configuration parameter had the monitor resolution sizes in it.
What is the correct/safe way to move from upstart to systemd? I originally installed upstart in 11.3 and have now upgraded to 11.4. Having successfully upgraded to 11.4 I tried to use yast2 to install systemd and systemd-sysvinit onto my running system. Yast correctly identified that upstart should be deinstalled as a prerequisite for installing systemd-sysvinit.
After the install of systemd the system wouldn't shut down, and on a reset the system reported many systemctl/start service timeouts on things such as mounts and ttys. Eventually the system started an X-windows KDM login, but there were no console ttys and mounts were missing. I used X/kdm to login to root - phew! - I restored / from an rsync backup I'd made prior to the changes, so I'm back in business with upstart. I'd like to tidy up and move to systemd - I going to have a nose around myself, perhaps I will try switching back to sysv init and then going to systemd - but I have to wait for the machine to be idle before I experiment, any info in the mean time would be great.
I want to use secure file permissions within OpenSUSE, but having to provide the root password for every window I click is just a little too much.Wonder what the setting "paranoid" does then. And I also wonder how to adjust the safe settings to not get prompted with every single click.
View 9 Replies View RelatedI got the blank screen when trying to install openSUSE 11.3 x64, so I was able to successfully install by choosing: Kernel (F6) > Safe Mode
Now I am trying to build my wireless driver, and I also notice that my touchpad is not scrolling. I had this OS installed in Windows 7 through VirtualBox before doing the clean installation, and I remember the touchpad scrolling.
I am thinking that by choosing Kernel Safe Mode to install openSUSE, that it did not install all the repositories, and it is why I am running into some difficulty.
what I need to do to fix my installation as if I had not installed in Safe Mode.
A little while ago i bought a magazine with the openSUSE 11.1 distro on it but couldn't install it so i gave up. I am attempting to have another go. The problem is that the os will work fine when booted from CD in fail safe mode and can be installed from there but when out of fail safe mode the system begins to boot but freezes and will do nothing more.
View 9 Replies View RelatedI have a fresh install of openSUSE 11.4 with KDE. This includes ALSA and Pulseaudio.
I have a mic and speakers and a webcam. As far as I can see microphone and sound reproduction work, the webcam also works:
- I can arecord and aplay
- KMix works
- amixer and alsamixer work (I am using microphone boost)
- test sounds play
- the webcam works in "Personal Settings (Configure Desktop)": Hardware > Multimedia > Phonon (test camera)
- Pidgin and Empathy work with sound and video.
(had to set this: gconftool-2 --set --type=string /system/gstreamer/0.10/default/audiosrc pulsesrc,
without this setting it was set to alsasrc by default and Pidgin and Empathy didn't work).
I installed Skype 2.2 (also tried 2.1) and tested the video camera in Skype. Result: doesn't work.
I made a test call: I hear the voice of the lady answering the call, but my own voice is not recorded.
In Skype everything is set to use Pulseaudio.
I am at a total loss to understand what is going wrong here. Why does Skype not work, when everything else does??
I made this observation:
When an application records something, a "Capture stream" shows up in the KMix "Capture Streams" tab. For example, when I use arecord, "ALSA capture" shows up, while I record. When I make a call on Empathy, a capture stream shows up in the said tab.
When I make a Skype call, NO capture stream shows up, so obviously Skype is not capturing anything.

View 4 Replies View RelatedI recently bought a IOgear USB bluetooth adapter and a Sony DRBT101/BLK bluetooth headphones to use with my computer.Whenever I try to make a call using these headphones with skype, I can speak for say 10 seconds and then the headset disconnects completely from the system. I then have to reconnect the headset by switching it off and on. I do not have this problem listening to music using A2DP. It works fine with my mobile phone. When I change the profile to Telephony Duplex (HSP/HFP), it shows up as hands free, I thought it should be headset in blueman manager. My friend uses Plantronics headset with is Dell laptop with built in bluetooth and he says his comes up as headset not hands free. Could this be causing the problem?

Anyone using Skype as an IM client? I only use very basic functionality in IM, and I like Skype's interface, but can't find any info how to set it up, import contacts etc.. I got my copy from skype website, installed fine and easy...I am using kopete atm, don't like it. I have used pidgin before, didn't like that (I am a KDE user) either. On windows I have used Trillian, liked previous versions, but they keep upgrading and making it "better" or as I think, "worse"
View 1 Replies View RelatedI'm using Kopete as my IM manager with the Skype plugin. I used the One Click Install tool to install Skype4py and than I enabled Skype in Kopete. Every time I try to enable Skype within Kopete I get an error box that says, "no Skype".
OS: 11.2 64bit
I've installed skype, and the mic volume is too low. If i talk very loudly, I can hear my voice, but it's very faint. The ext mic boost/capture level in KMix is set to about 80%.
Running Suse 11.2
Some time ago I had to reinstall all my packages under 64-bit OpenSuse 11.2. After that I can't get Skype working - Skype always gives me "segmentation fault" when trying to execute it (from command-line).
I've followed steps recommended in wiki, I've tried different versions (32-bit as well as 64-bit RPMs) downloaded from different repositories (including old 1.4.0.xx). Nothing changes anything.
I don't have any webcam and I've never had one, so I guess it cannot be related to that.
i've just created a new .asoundrc which uses dmix. So i can use it in KDEs systemsettings. And all Programs can use the sound devices at the same time. The only Program who makes trouble is skype. If i hear music or watch tv and an skype systemsound comes, i must restart the Soundtrack. Now i have seen that skype uses ALSA. But if i set the default settings, skype would like to have exclusivly access for the sounddevices. Exists any way, to use skype with a mixer like dmix, so all applications have collaborative access to the sound devices.
