View 2 RepliesI am setting up a laptop for an old person who has trouble locating the skype icon in the notification bar.
I want clicking on the skype desktop icon to open the window of already running instance instead of a new one (like it happens in Window$).I am using Lucid puppy 520.
I want the icon to link to script which checks if skype is already running, and if it is, it de-iconifies the skype window
Last year I installed UNR on my 7yr old daughter eeepc901. It came with XP Home but was always crashing and running slow. Since all she needed it for was browsing childrens sites and the odd email from myself i decided to put something better on there and in the end choose UNR.
Its been running great for, However I have now taken a new where I am now based in Germany. I have set her up with a skype acct and last night we managed a video call for a couple of minuets although I couldnt hear her very well (couldnt figure out how to get her to turn the volume on up her Mic) When I first set skype up i set it to auto login which when ever I used the laptop to test it worked fine.
However as I am now in Germany and not able to really help with the settings The first thing I thought of doing was to upgrade the version of skype her laptop is running. So I can go to skype and downlaod 2.1 beta 2 for linux would this be the correct version?
Also what I need is a set of instructions that I can give to either my 7yr old daughter or her mother (daughter is probably the better of the two with computers)
on how to install the new version. Mum is used to windows where she just double clicks an .exe file and follows the prompts.
Also where would I need them to look in order to get them to turn the mic volume up?
There are 3 versions of Skype for Ubuntu on the Skype download section. Does anybody know which is the correct one for Ubuntu Karmic?

I recently bought a IOgear USB bluetooth adapter and a Sony DRBT101/BLK bluetooth headphones to use with my computer.Whenever I try to make a call using these headphones with skype, I can speak for say 10 seconds and then the headset disconnects completely from the system. I then have to reconnect the headset by switching it off and on. I do not have this problem listening to music using A2DP. It works fine with my mobile phone. When I change the profile to Telephony Duplex (HSP/HFP), it shows up as hands free, I thought it should be headset in blueman manager. My friend uses Plantronics headset with is Dell laptop with built in bluetooth and he says his comes up as headset not hands free. Could this be causing the problem?

View 7 Replies View RelatedI just recently purchased a 3g dongle for my netbook. Everything seems to be working fine until I discovered this strange problem. I cant seem to text via skype, it doesnt go through. I testet the skype test call service and voice works fine, audio and mic. I have tried to google and search forums but no luck. I have before used skype on my netbook with my cellphone as a hot spot and it worked without problem but it doesnt have the same provider - different sim cards in phone and dongle.

View 4 Replies View RelatedI'm using ubuntu 10.4 and accidently removed the notification area from the top panel. Since then, I haven't been able to retrieve the icon. As I've read in many threads, I've added a new panel and added a notification error, but the area stays empty. (see screenshot) My other icons like the volume control and the amarok icon were gone as well, but setting up a new indicator applet did the trick. Still, the skype icon won't come back, I've even removed Skype and reinstalled it, but nothing changed. how I could get the icon back again?
View 9 Replies View RelatedI installed Skype only because it is necessary to Pidgin to handle the Skype service/protocol. I use Pidgin for many protocols included the IRC, so I don't need Skype icon in the system tray at all. Honestly I hate Skype, but unfortunately it seems that all the world use it. how to take off that terrible icon/indicator/applet from the systray. I searched in all system to find a configuration file, I opened few named Skype using vi to avoid to damage them, but I have not found nothing interesting for my scope. PS: don't tell me how I will switch on or off Skype, because a plug-in of Pidgin do it w/o user interaction.
View 3 Replies View Relatedwhen i start my skype account after login, I minimize and on the task bar appear the Icon , but few minute after, the icon disappear from the task bar. If I check the process (wy typing ps -aux | grep skype) i found the process of skype, but I'm unable to get it in foreground (nor with alt-tab key. I was unable to see the skype icon).so every time I have to kill the process ad start it again.
View 1 Replies View RelatedJust installed openSUSE 11.3 (KDE) and not expert about it yet, I am experiencing two problems.
Skype: just installed 2.1.0.81-suse.i586rpm, starting it I get just the icon jumping on the desktop a bit and nothing else.
If I try with the command line, this is the result:
After that, I dont have preview about stored file images and even online, Google Images does not showing preview, just colored strips; if I go with the mouse on it, the image comes out.
I'm running Kubuntu Meerkat. If I set skype to start minimized automatically, it seems that it's running but there's no way to get to it. It shows up in the process list but there's no icon for it in the taskbar or anywhere else on the screen. Even worse, I can't just kill and restart it; if I kill it, it just comes back. If I issue the skype command from the K menu or from a command line, I get a complaint that another instance is already running.
View 2 Replies View RelatedWondering if any one else is having this problem lately under 11.4. My Skype does not want to launch any more. When I click to open Skype, the tray icon will pop up for 1 second and then just disappear. Have tried launching from command line to see if there are any messages, but it just says aborted when you try launch it.
I noticed this started happening randomly when I had the laptop in hibernate and then would resume, Skype would then just disappear and then I would just relaunch it and it would be find again.
i read some similar threads, but i cant seem to get the skype running so, lets start from the top my system>

i downloaded fedora 10 from this site> [URL]... i dont know if the problem is cause it says linux beta... or should i use some other fedora other then 10plus after downloading it, i even managed to install it, but after that i cand seem to run it i pres alt/f2, i write the skype in the box but nothing happens, so i find the file manually with the help of the find engine, i locate the executive file, but it will not open.... i am double/clicking, or pressing the right mouse button and clicking open file, but nothing happens
I'm running skype on my Debian squeeze with kde 4.4. If I minimize it, on a task bar it remain for a wile, and then disappear. I know it's still working because some times I see some message (user x it's online, user y it's off line etc etc) and if I type:
ps -aux | grep skype,
I receive the PID number. But I'm not able to bring it accessible in my desktop.
I have an offer for a free outdated laptop, and wondering if it's possible to run skype on this. It will be running with a very stripped-down Ubuntu Linux operating system, and no other graphical goodies hogging up the processing power.
The specs will be:
400 Mhz Celeron processor
Approx 300 MB RAM
Rest is unknown.
Think this is capable of running skype with video?
installed skype, shows in apps-internet-skype , but hwen i want to start it, it doesn't do anything. does not show in sysmonitor as running, or at all uninstalled and re-installed, still no luck anyone who got it working.

View 4 Replies View RelatedI have downloaded & installed the skype beta release for linux (now ancient?) on my newly build fedora 14 (64) box.
Under fedora 12, I made this work after several hours of mucking around by installing old libraries for 32 bit code in /lib and /usr/lib - as I got an error, I found the library and put it in place. This was painful and the WRONG way to do things - I should have been using yum!
It remains a shame that the Skype release for Linux is so old, but that is life.
Can anyone list the libraries needed (prefer yum names if possible) to make this work?
I can do this again the hard way and list the results for others (should have saved for myself, but I never dreamed that a newer Skype release would take so long) , but I am sure many folks have this working already. I am surprised there is no "yum install skype---" command.
i use U 9.10 and upon checking the software centre i realised that skype is not listed! does this mean i can't use skype with linux ? isn't this one of the major problems people face with linux in general ? i mean the lack of availability of hardware drivers and specialised softwares ?
