My Skype is not running at all. I have recently upgraded my Opensuse to version 11.3 and since the upgrade Skype will not run.
When running the skype from the command line the error message that I receive is "segmentation fault".
I have read another post on the internet that talks about Video drivers.
On the previous 11.2 opensuse that I was running I had the Nvidia Propriety drivers. Now I have the opensource versions.
A few days ago I went to perform the Service Pack 1 Upgrade for Win 7. This crashed out with an error. On researching the problem I found a solution to fix the problem by marking the Windows partition as active. I did this (via Computer Mgmt -> Disk Mgmt). This allowed the SP1 upgrade to work, however on reboot I got an error BOOTMGR missing. This I rather rashly resolved by using the Windows 7 install DVD in Recovery mode to reinstall the Windows Boot manager via bootrec /Fixboot I thought I would then be able to use the Opensuse 11.2 install disk to fix grub.
I use the Opensuse install disk and select Repair system -> Expert Mode -> Install New Boot Loader then select Other -> Reread Configuration from Disk. This adds Win 7 back into the grub menu. I then select OK and get the message "the bootloader was installed successfully". The problem then comes when I click my way through OK and Next to finish the install. At the end of the process I get the message "An error occurred during the installation" and I'm no further forward.
FYI the PC has a single SATA disk installed partitioned as follows:
dev/sda1 100Mb Win System Parkition
dev/sda2 Windows NTFS
dev/sda3 Windows FAT
I let the update manager complete the weekly update and after restarting, Skype will not load. I attempted to troubleshooting Skype found in the Ubuntu documentation, but it does not appear valid for Ubuntu 10.10 amd-64. [URL] fails to start
View 3 Replies View RelatedJust noticed that during calls skype uses ~30-50% cpu, + pulseaudio uses ~20%. I found some old threads on this like [URL] Or [URL]. The former suggests to purge pulse and use alsa/oss instead. The latter suggests changing mic in skype to DeviceXX and tweak the pulse.conf
There's also a launchpad bug on that with status Confirmed->invalid (due to "problem fixed in skype 2.1 beta") but looks like it's not (I am using 2.1 beta)
1. Does any1 has this problem?
2. I can't try 2nd link's approach as my skype has only PulseAudio in the settings, so I can't select Device or anything else!
3. Should I try to remove pulse in favor of ALSA? I'm pretty happy with pulse otherwise that this issue, I use it to record sound out of my sound card and I'm not sure if I can do this with alsa/os.
I've upgraded to Ubuntu 11.04, and I still using the old-style Gnome interface (not the notebook style).
When I start skype, the tray icon is not added in the top-bar. And skype is not present in the notification applet.
What I've tried:
- I've tried to reinstall skype
- I've installed dconf-tools and ran dconf-editor, then watched in desktop->unity->panel, Skype is in the systray-whitelist.

I've upgraded from 9.10 to 10.04 and everything works fine but. I use skype (2.1.0.81) a lot and I can make calls and receive them as normal with normal mic/sound levels. When I get a notification the sound is so faint its almost inaudible. Clicking "Test sound" in notifications has the same effect - almost inaudible sounds (I thought they were not working at all until I turned the volume right up).
I tried completely removing and reinstalling skype through synaptic to no avail. All the Sound devices in skype are set to "PulseAudio Server (local)" - there are no other options coming up. "Make a test call" works fine and the skype sounds are all at the expected level. Real calls are fine too, so long as I notice them and respond. "Make a test sound" is silent.
Likewise, testing the event in Notifications plays the sound really quietly. Allocating different sounds makes no difference - the level is still really low so I can't work around the problem that way. Anyone know how I can correct the ringer volume without blowing out my eardrums on an actual call?
I'm running 32-bit Ubuntu 10.10 on a Macbook 3,1 and using my computer's built in iSight. Up until recently, before making the switch to Skype Beta 2.2, I was having no problems using Skype's video chat feature. However, now I am only able to get video working if I open a terminal window and type in:
"LD_PRELOAD=/usr/lib/libv4l/v4l1compat.so skype"
Does anyone know of a way to get Skype functioning normally again? The launchers from my menu/panel no longer load the Skype that can use video, and when I tried to change the launch command to what what I use in terminal, it keeps telling me that "there was an error creating the child process for this terminal."
Yesterday I upgraded from 9.10 to 10.04 using the built in upgrader. After upgrading, whenever I open Firefox, it will just say "The connection has timed out" for every page, but I am connected to the internet. Also, w3m will not load any web pages as well. But I am connected to the internet, because pidgin works, apt-get works, ping, and telnet work.
I will ping google.com with success each time, then attempt to load google.com in Firefox and it will say that it cannot connect to the host. I have tried both "Connect directly to the internet" and "Connect using system proxy settings" for Firefox (the system settings are to connect directly to the internet).
I then thought that maybe something was blocking port 80, so I used telnet (telnet google.com 80), and with that, I got the HTML response of [URL]. what can I do to make my computer able to brows the web again? I am running Ubuntu 10.04 with kernel 2.6.32-22 on a Compaq Presario CQ60-417DX Notebook.

Installed Lucid as a dual boot on Dell Dimension2400. Upgrade Mgr gave me 501 upgrades to install, which Upgrade Mgr did, after which It locks up on login screen. There was also a problem with Windows, but that's another thing. Now I had not upgraded Ubuntu for a long time. I think I still had Ubuntu 8.9 . So I wanted to upgrade and let Ubuntu do it automatically, it showed the upgrade to 9.4. So let it upgrade, but it asked if it had to change menu.lst, but since I had menu.lst modified in the right way, I choose the option to keep the already installed version. But it just kept asking the same question, so 4 or 5 times and a few hours later I choose the option to change it to the default package version. Then it didn't ask this anymore, but it hung at a later stage.
So I waited several hours longer, but it didn't proceed anymore, so I had to shut it down.It shut down OK, but then when I restarted, what I described above happened.Now I have another problem, my disk reader (CD/DVD) doesn't work either, so I cannot simply use a LiveCD.
I have successfully upgraded from 10.10 to 11.04, computer was rebooted and I got working Ubuntu Natty. I did not altered any settings and switched computer off. When I tried to boot computer today I got Ubuntu load screen, but OS does not load properly (only load screent, startup sound and that's all).I am able to load terminal as root. View 1 Replies View RelatedAfter an almost flawless upgrade from 9.04 to 9.10, the desktop doesn't quite finish loading: when I log in I am left with unmovable but otherwise usable windows chiefly noticeable by their lack of title bar. I can kick the system into completing a normal startup by right clicking on the desktop and selecting "visual effects/normal" whereupon it pops up with "desktop effects not available" and subsequently the title bars all return and everything works as normal - even compositing (meta city). Something appears to be choking it at the last hurdle. How I might go about debugging it. Failing that, what do I need to purge/reinstall to make it work normally?
View 14 Replies View RelatedI have a fresh install of openSUSE 11.4 with KDE. This includes ALSA and Pulseaudio.
I have a mic and speakers and a webcam. As far as I can see microphone and sound reproduction work, the webcam also works:
- I can arecord and aplay
- KMix works
- amixer and alsamixer work (I am using microphone boost)
- test sounds play
- the webcam works in "Personal Settings (Configure Desktop)": Hardware > Multimedia > Phonon (test camera)
- Pidgin and Empathy work with sound and video.
(had to set this: gconftool-2 --set --type=string /system/gstreamer/0.10/default/audiosrc pulsesrc,
without this setting it was set to alsasrc by default and Pidgin and Empathy didn't work).
I installed Skype 2.2 (also tried 2.1) and tested the video camera in Skype. Result: doesn't work.
I made a test call: I hear the voice of the lady answering the call, but my own voice is not recorded.
In Skype everything is set to use Pulseaudio.
I am at a total loss to understand what is going wrong here. Why does Skype not work, when everything else does??
I made this observation:
When an application records something, a "Capture stream" shows up in the KMix "Capture Streams" tab. For example, when I use arecord, "ALSA capture" shows up, while I record. When I make a call on Empathy, a capture stream shows up in the said tab.
When I make a Skype call, NO capture stream shows up, so obviously Skype is not capturing anything.
I upgraded the distro (Strecht - Testing) and the result was almost the same mentioned by mittgreen, when I boot the system it fails to load the X, ending in the "oh no something has gone wrong" screen.Now, the only possible way to use the GUI is to start it manually by startx command. Reading the Xorg.log I saw a "No screens found" error.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI've just tried to upgrade my Fedora 9 (x86_64) installation to Fedora 10 using the installation DVD. The upgrade seemed to proceed very smoothly, no errors ,nor warnings, it just seemed that it is upgrading grub (yes, I chose to upgrade grub as well) and all the packages (it took about 20 minutes). However, after the upgrade was over, it asked me to reboot my computer, so that's what I did, I took out the DVD and waited for GRUB to load.
It loaded just fine, but I was quite surprised when there was no option to boot Fedora 10 in the list. Ok, so I booted into Fedora 9 which went fine, the layout changed to the new one and some programs don't run. When I looked into /lib/modules I couldn't see any fc10 kernel installed. So the question is what happened and what should I do, so that it upgrades to fc10?
I successfully installed Ubuntu 9.10 Netbook Remix on an Asus EeePC in a dual boot mode with Windows XP. Because the computer has no CD drive, I used a USB stick to download the files for installation. Twice now, after upgrading to a new kernel (2.6.31-17 and 2.6.31-19 I think), when rebooting after the upgrade and selecting Ubuntu from the operating system menu, I get a message:

along with a notice about limited shell commands being available. The ls command results in:

In trying some of the other commands, I get a message that a linux kernel isn't loaded. The computer still runs Windows fine - or at least as fine as Windows ever runs. I'd like to recover Ubuntu without doing another full installation.
since upgrade from 9.04 to 9.10, I cannot load a website link which should load openoffice and then an excel or spreadsheet document.
It recognises that its an "excel" document because it load openoffice spreadsheet, but it loads a blank document without any data in it.
It worked properly in version 9.04?
A server of mine previously running ubuntu 9.10 used to be between 0.01 and 0.10 load average during the normal load of users using various server programs on it (mostly apache with php scripts).
Now, after upgrading to 10.04 (which went smoothly for the most part), the load average is much greater under the same user workload, hovering between 0.1 and 0.3 under very light work and up to and over 1 regularly when more users are accessing the same scripts.
Are there any known issues that would cause greater usage of the same resources in lucid, or are there any ways I can trace what's causing the higher load? Downgrading or starting with a fresh install are last resorts, as there are a lot of customized options specifically set up for this server and I'd rather not go through backing them all up and restoring them after a complete wipe.
I upgraded webserver to new ubuntu server 10.04 (x86-64). After upgrade the increased load from 0,3 to 1,4. On webserver running phpbb, which generating slow quieres, which not before upgrade to lucid. HW conf: Intel Core i7, 8GB ram, WD Raptor 10k rpm. Week17 upgrade to new version.

After the upgrade finished, now at the boot selection menu I am able to select Windows 7, but after it starts it tries to fix some errors and says that it's unable to load. Ubuntu 10.04 loads just fine.

I had a 10.04 Wubi install on my Win7 notebook. I selected the option to upgrade to 10.10 from update manager. It downloaded all the updates, but reported that due to some problem, only a partial upgrade will be possible. I agreed. And now, when I select Ubuntu from the startup OS list, it just shows a blank screen and restarts within 3-5 seconds. What do I do??
View 5 Replies View RelatedI upgraded my laptop from 10.10 to 11.04 yesterday. On the reboot part of the installation and on all subsequent boots, the loader gets as far as the initial Ubuntu splash screen before switching to verbose mode and dying in interesting ways.
If I boot using wireless, the display flashes six times, then sometimes hangs around before reporting: iwlagn 0000:08:00.0: Aggregation not enabled for tid 0 because load = 4 (this number can be anything from 0 to 10)
If I boot using a network connection, I get the same splash screen and six flashes before the system hands, usually at the message: Stopping userspace bootslash [OK]
I am not keen on reinstalling from CD except as a last resort as I have a number of files that I do not want wiped.
Af few isssues arised after nessisary kernel upgrad to 2.6.32 bpo.5-686 to allow new wireless card to work. Synaptic will not allow the 5 install CD's to load when I do "reload" It reports
