OpenSUSE Install :: 11.4 - KDE 4.6 Hang On System Shutdown
Aug 23, 2011I am new to opensuse, coming over from debian based systems. However I am having an issue in which my system will not power off on shutdown. Restarts just fine. i get a missing error during shutdown, but there is nothing to relate the error to on that line. Then the shutdown procedes to The System will be halted immediately then hangs. The keyboard powers off and then thats it. All fans are still running. I have searched extensively on this forum and google.

Dec 30, 2009When i shutdown my SuSE 11.2 box with all current updates i have started to notice an error message.Something about failed to unmount, trying remount as read only or something like that.The trouble is its almost the very last message that appears and its not on the screen long enough to read properly.Somewhere is there a logfile that i can recover this error message from so that i can make some sort of an attempt to resolve the issue, post the whole message here in more detail?

Aug 21, 2011I have opensuse 11.4 (Gnome + KDE) installed. The problem is with Gnome. When in KDE, everything works fine. But in gnome, when I shutdown/restart, it merely logs off the session. Then I have to shutdown it from the menu in the login screen.

Jan 10, 2011Built new system and installed openSUSE 11.3 x86_64 with Gnome desktop about 6 weeks ago. Have never been able to get the system to shutdown or fully poweroff using the installed OS. If I use the Knoppix live CD - no problem. System boots up fine and shuts down and powers off correctly. With the installed OS, it originally crashed on shutdown and had to power off using the power button. After trying many things, the OS shuts down, powers off the fans etc, but the keyboard is still lit. I cannot restart the system without turning off power at the power supply. Starting my computer by turning off the power supply switch, waiting
10-12 seconds, turning on the power supply switch and then hitting the power button gets to be very annoying after a few weeks.
Installed KDE and switched to that to see what difference it might make. System does not shutdown, but reboots instead. Switched back to Gnome. Have tried sudo /sbin/shutdown -h now and poweroff. Identical behaviour. System is completely up-to-date. BIOS, kernel, video drivers.

Jul 31, 2010I'm running Ubuntu 10.04, and ever since last upgrade a couple of days ago (I think), everytime I hit shutdown on the gnome-panel (admittedly, I haven't tried the command line shutdown) the computer restarts itself. This computer is dual-booted with Win 7, and the shutdown command there properly halts the system.

Nov 7, 2010I can chose Shutdown from the menu but the system gets to the point where the power supply should 'click' and shut off. It doesn't, it cycles and the system reboots. It wasn't doing this in 10.04, at least not towards the end prior to updating to 10.10 beta/rc/final. Also, 10.10 didn't do this either, until recently. (Current default = 2.6.35-22-generic)
Here's the funny thing though; if I choose a previous version from the GRUB2 menu, 2.6.32-21-generic for example, the login screen won't allow mouse nor keyboard control but will shut down normally w/ a single, momentary push of the Power Button. Now, there are folks w/ a seemingly similar problem, but in their case they can't shutdown at all. My trouble is a shutdown just triggers a restart.

May 6, 2011I just installed the newest version of Xubuntu using the LiveCD, I chose to install it alongside my current installation of Windows 7, everything went well it seemed, but now when I choose Windows 7 under the GRUB menu it just restarts my system and then takes me back to the grub menu, Xubuntu works fine though and boots fine, I tried sudo update-grub, didn't fix it.Heres the boot info from a script I found, but being rather poor when it comes to diagnosing Linux, I figured it'd be best to post this and see

Ubuntu :: Run From Cron Shutdown Command Restarts Server Instead Of Shutting It Down?
Jan 4, 2010I want my server to automatically shutdown at 23:59 and startup at 8:00. The startup is handled through by bios but the shutdown is to be managed through cron. I thought I had this working, I actually swear I had it working because I thought the uptime command showed the appropriate uptime. I happened to be up and was streaming a movie from my server when at the time it should've shutdown it actually just restarted. If I run the shutdown -h now command by itself it works well but the scheduled command just restarts the server. Here is the what is shown when I enter crontab -e.

Aug 29, 2010I am trying to install opensuse 11.3 but the PC restarts itself before loading the installer dvd. When I run the installer dvd from 11.2 i can see all the files there, i click on auto run and it gives me an error msg saying cannot find autorun program also have a live gnome desktop cd and same problem, cant boot install media. This were both created on opensuse 11.2 using k3b for the first one and brasero for the second one. I have put both on an xp laptop and the installers start with no problem, both media check are fine, no error. On top of that I have some ubuntu dvd and some xp dvd, I have tried both on my pc and they boot fine, so its not a boot problem,
this ones were created on this same pc before I had opensuse, seems only cd or dvd created in opensuse fail, but it only fails when booting on my opensuse pc and work fine when I put them into xp laptop. I have been trying all day and I cant find any info on this problem. The only thing I can think of, that I have not tried is to try to burn a dvd using xp and try that one.

Jan 14, 2010When i use the shutdown-command in the terminal as root, it nearly works. It starts to shut down, and it looks like all programs and the kernels shuts down. I end up with a black screen, sometimes with the ubuntu-logo on, but it never powers off. I have to force it off by holding the power button. When i use the graphical interface to shut it down, it works perfectly. The poweroff-command works without problem too.

OpenSUSE Install :: HP Lips Printer Driver Stops Often Restarts Only Via Root User?
Apr 7, 2010I installed the HPLips printer driver for my HP Officejet Pro 8500 Printer.
The driver often stops printing on its own (HP Device Manager => "Printer Control" tab shows "stopped"). I guess it does so when it encounters a situation where it cannot print right on.
The problem: Users without root permission cannot restart printing, even when everything is o.k.. They have to call me in order to "start printer", because restarting it needs root access.
Does anyone know how to solve the problem: either setting the driver not to turn to "stopped" or permitting a restart by normal users?

May 10, 2011I this problem where my laptop hangs up or suddenly restarts. Currently Iam using Fedora 15 but I had this problem when I was using fedora 13. I upgraded to 15 thinking that may be its been resolved in 15.

Red Hat :: System Won't Boot - Just Says GRUB And Restarts / Sort It?
Jan 20, 2009I updated a RHEL 4 system today using up2date and when the system rebooted it just said "GRUB" on the screen for a few seconds and then restarted (and did this over and over and over).
I booted from a rescue CD and was going to reinstall grub.
Here's the kicker: this machine has two hard drives configured with software RAID 1, and I don't want to screw up the mirroring by tinkering with grub.
/etc/fstab shows that /boot is at /dev/md0 but "/sbin/grub-install /dev/md0" doesn't work ("/dev/md0 does not have any corresponding BIOS drive").
I have a bad feeling that if I do "/sbin/grub-install /dev/hda1" that I'm going to screw up my mirroring.

Dec 15, 2009Pressing the shutdown or restart buttons in XFCE simply logs me out and leaves the system running. I did some Googling and it was suggested that by default users don't have permission to shutdown. (not sure how this is a XFCE specific problem in that case but moving on...)
I've taken the following advice:
For a "desktop" system that wants to protect itself from casual attacks (and "puzzled penguins"), but still grant the user control of their system, run the following as "root":
USER=<your_userid>
polkit-auth --show-obtainable | while read OPT; do
polkit-auth --user $USER --grant $OPT
done
Where <your_userid> is the name of your unprivileged account. I wasn't entirely sure how to run it, so I stuck it into a shell script and ran that with the sudo command. Needless to say it hasn't worked. Is there an easy "sure fire" way to fix this problem, hitting the shutdown button repeatedly to test really grates on you after a while. BTW, Pressing the power button on the front of the system shuts it down okay.
OpenSUSE Install :: Upgraded From 11.1 To 11.2 - No Normal Shutdown
Mar 13, 2010Recently upgraded from OpenSuse 11.1 to 11.2 and although it didn't go smoothly the first time (computer hung), I was able to complete the install and start. I have added and updated the required repositories.
The following problems persist:
1. I can't shutdown normally. The black screen before shutdown shows something on the lines of 'segmentation fault'...and also 'cannot find fstab or mtab'. I have to restart into Failsafe mode which shuts down properly.
2. Amarok keeps crashing. It used to work fine in 11.1 and I think its one of the best media players out there so I am wondering why. I do have other players and I have used the debugging reporter option for Amarok.

Jul 6, 2010I have recently created a KDE 4 desktop using suse studio, it boots up fine on my machine, but doesn't shutdown!!
On my mum's laptop, which I will be using it most on, (it's windoez) it won't start KDE 4 at all! I can use the console, but I wanted to impress her with the amazing GUI and Compiz. And you can't make presentations or browse the web in a console, can you?
And sudo poweroff and sudo shutdown -h now don't work either!
OpenSUSE Install :: Migrated To 11.3 - Now Shutdown Freezes Up
Sep 26, 2010Yesterday I migrated from 11.0 to 11.3 (32-bit version) and began customizing personal desktop settings once everything seemed to be working OK. Today I continued customizing the personal desktop settings. Now everything freezes up during shutdown.
The screen goes blank with the arrow pointer frozen in place. Hitting enter or ctrl-alt-esc has no effect. One time, I walked away for 30 minutes to see if it would resolve itself, but there was no effect.
I saw someone is having a similar problem with the 64-bit version, but there were no responses. Where do I go from here?

Nov 17, 2010this problem is a well known one as far as I have read, but the solution is yet to come.I formatted and installed OpenSuse 11.3 KDE as the only OS on a PC with 768 RAM, two Hard Disks (6+8 GB), mobo Abit BE6, processor Celeron Coppermine 1100Mhz (with slotket adapter), video card Matrox G400+, Sound Blaster Live! Value.HD 1 is set root and ext4 + 1 GB swap, HD2 is /home ext3.The live OpenSuse CD worked fine, shutdown turns off the power, while the installed one won't. I formatted twice, and the problem persist. Reboot works fine.At shutdown, the hard disks are turned off while the screen and power are still on, so I have to press the power button to turn off completely.
Yesterday I wasted all the day with this problem without solving it, I've read many threads but no solution worked. That PC obviously worked fine with both Windows 98 and XP.Those problems are in the "out of the box" installation, without any setting altered.I've tried disabling ACPI, PM control by APM, and power management features in the bios (latest 2001's Award bios for this old mobo).I've set alternatively pci=noacpi, nosmp, apm=power-off, acpi=force in GRUB options. I've updated the distro. I've set value poweroff for HALT in etc/sysconfig. Nothing changed.I've also tried macumba and ancient celtic cerimonies, yet they didn't work.Is it possible to solve this problem or it's a known unsolved bug?
