General :: System Hangs Up Or Restarts?

May 10, 2011

I this problem where my laptop hangs up or suddenly restarts. Currently Iam using Fedora 15 but I had this problem when I was using fedora 13. I upgraded to 15 thinking that may be its been resolved in 15.

I have searched for possible solutions. my system software is up-to-date including the kernel which I took from the test repositeries..

I checked /var/log/messages for possible clues but I have not been able to figure it out. Below is the output of /var/log/messages files just before the laptop freezes or restarts.. so far the below output has been consistent with the event...

Code:
May 10 22:44:11 localhost ntpd[1622]: Listening on routing socket on fd #22 for interface updates
May 10 22:44:11 localhost ntpd[1622]: 0.0.0.0 c016 06 restart
May 10 22:44:11 localhost ntpd[1622]: 0.0.0.0 c012 02 freq_set kernel 16.857 PPM
May 10 22:44:18 localhost ntpd[1622]: 0.0.0.0 c61c 0c clock_step +0.160289 s

Red Hat :: System Won't Boot - Just Says GRUB And Restarts / Sort It?

Jan 20, 2009

I updated a RHEL 4 system today using up2date and when the system rebooted it just said "GRUB" on the screen for a few seconds and then restarted (and did this over and over and over).

I booted from a rescue CD and was going to reinstall grub.

Here's the kicker: this machine has two hard drives configured with software RAID 1, and I don't want to screw up the mirroring by tinkering with grub.

/etc/fstab shows that /boot is at /dev/md0 but "/sbin/grub-install /dev/md0" doesn't work ("/dev/md0 does not have any corresponding BIOS drive").

I have a bad feeling that if I do "/sbin/grub-install /dev/hda1" that I'm going to screw up my mirroring.

Ubuntu :: Fresh Install, Choosing Windows 7 Under GRUB Just Restarts System?

May 6, 2011

I just installed the newest version of Xubuntu using the LiveCD, I chose to install it alongside my current installation of Windows 7, everything went well it seemed, but now when I choose Windows 7 under the GRUB menu it just restarts my system and then takes me back to the grub menu, Xubuntu works fine though and boots fine, I tried sudo update-grub, didn't fix it.Heres the boot info from a script I found, but being rather poor when it comes to diagnosing Linux, I figured it'd be best to post this and see

Fedora Hardware :: NVIDIA Driver - System Randomly Logs The User Out And / Or Restarts The Session With No Warning

Jan 31, 2011

I've recently installed Fedora 14 (x86_64) on my Alienware m15x laptop which has a NVIDIA GTX 260m onboard. Now I have followed leigh123linux's guide to installing those drivers on F14. The installation is a success and everything seems to be in working order, until the system randomly logs the user out and/or restarts the session with no warning. The screen goes black and the nvidia logo appears and then its back to the login screen again. This can happen many times with no apparent stop insight. This does not happen with the default F14 drivers that come with the installation, I have tried several re installations of the Fedora OS and several re installations of the NVIDIA driver, i still have the same problems.

Could you give me a list of the large folders in the Redhat OS?

Is there any way to check if du has failed or is hanging/processing a folder?

How long should du -h --max-depth=1 take on 40GB of data?

Solved, it was taking a long time on a 29gb /var/log folder

General :: Ubuntu 9.10 Constant Restarts

May 17, 2010

My dads' hard drive went up a while back. So we got him a new one and installed Ubuntu 9.10 instead of windows. All was going well until About two weeks ago. The system restarts randomly. Not when anyone is doing anything in particular. Sometimes when we are using firefox, sometimes just sitting on the desktop, and never after any certain amount of time. Some times its after five minutes, some times after several hours. It's not a full out crash, the window for shutdown/switch user/restart comes up out of nowhere. When we close the window, it shows back up pretty quickly, but then the computer will just crash. While restarting, half of the time the computer won't make it past the bios screen before restarting again, and will continue the bios restarting cycle until the computer is unplugged. By the way, the system is a dell dimension E310 from 2005 with all of the original hardware minus hard drive inside, so if it is a hardware issue that wouldn't surprise me. Also, just one time after the restart I received the message "fsck from util-linux-ng 2.16" , if that helps at all.

General :: GA-880GMA-UD2H Hangs On "Loading Operating System" After Removing LILO From MBR

Aug 2, 2010

I just joined the forum today. I'm not a linux beginner per se (about 4 years experience, now running Ubuntu Lucid on my laptop and windoze-free) and I built the desktop PC I'm typing this on six years ago. However, this is my first HTPC build and my first KnoppMyth install, and I've probably done something foolish.

This was an attempt at a fresh KnoppMyth 5.5 install on a virgin system. Hardware details:

MB: GIGABYTE|GA-880GMA-UD2H R
CPU: AMD|PH II X4 925 AM3 RT
RAM: 2Gx2|GSKILL F3-10666CL7D-4GBRH
HD: 1T|WD 7K 64M SATAIII WD1002FAEX - OEM
CD: BLU-RAY BURNER LG | WH10LS30 OEM - OEM

[Code]..

Basically, I just wish I had never bothered with KM5.5 and I want a do-over to go back to the beginning and put the LinHES 6.03 CD in and just do the installation. Since I can't do this, I'd like to at least be able to wipe everything I did and start fresh. Recall that I couldn't boot from CDROM even before I made the daft remove of LILO. The only time I successfully booted from CD was the very first time I turned on the machine to install KM5.5

Ubuntu Installation :: Mythbuntu System Hangs After Regular System Update: "out Of Memory" Errors

Aug 4, 2010

I have Mythbuntu 10.04 installed on an exclusive HTPC and working great... until tonight. After letting the system update some packages (161 packages if I remember right), I suddenly have an issue where the graphical system won't start. After researching I found three error messages that might be causing that.

1. At the start of splash screen I see "UUID=xxxxxxxCD7 not ready yet or not present" I checked in /etc/fstab and found that this is the swap partition. I don't remember seeing this before so this could be the culprit.

2. I'm not at the computer in question right now but I saw a Plymouth error about "mountall" and then the message "plymouth command failed". Not sure if this could be the main error.

3. after a while (usually ca. 1-2 min) I receive thousands of errors of the kind "out of memory"... "kill process XXXX" (process vary wildly e.g. dbus-daemon, mysql, etc)... "process killed"..."respawning"

After error 3, I'm not able to switch to graphical console (ctrl-alt-F7). If I was in the graphical console at this moment, I simply can't switch to the CLI console. I'm always afraid of updating my system since I've seen lots of things breaking afterwards (usually the proprietary graphic drivers) but this is really strange.

General :: Restarts From Power Failure - Lose Whatever Work Units That Have Started

May 24, 2010

I run computers that do distributed computing for cancer cures. I'm experimenting with running a version of Ubuntu that is specifically written for DC and can be run on bootable USB drives. The one I'm running now on USB works fine but there is one issue I need to solve. When I reboot the system or it restarts from a power failure I have to reattach the cruncher client(BOINC)to the each project and I lose whatever work units that have started. I don't have this problem if I use a HDD. I'm using an 8GB USB drive with 6GB of DDR3 12800 memory. Can someone explain to a linux novice how to overcome this issue?

Hardware :: System Hangs With New RAM (2gb)

Dec 27, 2010

I've got Asus M4AT78T-E motherboard, and so far, I was using 2x1GB of Corsair 1333 Mhz RAM. I decided to change it for 1x2GB OCZ 1600Mhz CL7 memory.

I removed current modules, and installed new one into red colored (they recommend it in user manual) slots. After start, computer hangs at random time, I mean, it could be when Grub loads (while going to select memtest), or even while POST test. (After detecting some SATA device).

Is it possible to run that memory on my computer? Is memory corrupted? I have possibility to use it on another system, but it will be about in next 2-3 weeks, and I'd like to have it here.
