Does anyone know where there might be a log of the shutdown errors I see flash on the screen when I shutdown the system? I thought they'd be in the warning log. Or is there a way to freeze that screen so I can actually read what is happening?
View 4 RepliesI have been trying to fix this for some time, on and off, and have been unable to, I have also ben unable to find a solution in the forums.I have installed openSUSE11.2 GNOME on a laptop, the install went fine, and it runs great, except for two problems:When I start up the splash screen doesn't show (this isn't really important, and I am happy to watch as everything is loaded)When I shutdown/reboot the computer freezes and I have to use the power button to switch off.This doesn't happen every time I shutdown, but most of the time.The freeze happens at different points of shutdown, so I don't know where to find what is causing the problem.As I mentioned point 1 is not really important, although I would like to know why this is happening, but problem 2 is very important.
View 9 Replies View RelatedI am new to opensuse, coming over from debian based systems. However I am having an issue in which my system will not power off on shutdown. Restarts just fine. i get a missing error during shutdown, but there is nothing to relate the error to on that line. Then the shutdown procedes to The System will be halted immediately then hangs. The keyboard powers off and then thats it. All fans are still running. I have searched extensively on this forum and google.
View 9 Replies View RelatedWhen i shutdown my SuSE 11.2 box with all current updates i have started to notice an error message.Something about failed to unmount, trying remount as read only or something like that.The trouble is its almost the very last message that appears and its not on the screen long enough to read properly.Somewhere is there a logfile that i can recover this error message from so that i can make some sort of an attempt to resolve the issue, post the whole message here in more detail?

View 2 Replies View RelatedI have opensuse 11.4 (Gnome + KDE) installed. The problem is with Gnome. When in KDE, everything works fine. But in gnome, when I shutdown/restart, it merely logs off the session. Then I have to shutdown it from the menu in the login screen.
View 2 Replies View RelatedWhen trying to "Leave" the system (either via the small button on the lower right of the taskbar or by right clicking on the Desktop and selecting "Leave") the logout / shutdown / restart screen comes up. I have the "Logout" desktop effect activated, which is supposed to desaturated the background when the Leave screen appears. However, instead of simply greying out the background, the image on the desktop and the rest of the screen also gets slightly distorted, with seemingly random distortion effects cropping up all over the place (e.g. horizontal lines or large blurs).
These distortions are different every time the Leave screen comes up. The Leave screen itself is displayed fine, and apart from the dodgy background I have no other issues with the whole process (the system shuts down or restarts properly according to my choice). I am using the Radeon drivers, and all other desktop effects I have on (Magic lamb, cover switch, present windows, etc) work fine and without a hitch. It's only the Logout effect that seems to glitch. Are the distortions intentionally created by the effect in order to emphasize the focus on the Leave screen?
Built new system and installed openSUSE 11.3 x86_64 with Gnome desktop about 6 weeks ago. Have never been able to get the system to shutdown or fully poweroff using the installed OS. If I use the Knoppix live CD - no problem. System boots up fine and shuts down and powers off correctly. With the installed OS, it originally crashed on shutdown and had to power off using the power button. After trying many things, the OS shuts down, powers off the fans etc, but the keyboard is still lit. I cannot restart the system without turning off power at the power supply. Starting my computer by turning off the power supply switch, waiting
10-12 seconds, turning on the power supply switch and then hitting the power button gets to be very annoying after a few weeks.
Installed KDE and switched to that to see what difference it might make. System does not shutdown, but reboots instead. Switched back to Gnome. Have tried sudo /sbin/shutdown -h now and poweroff. Identical behaviour. System is completely up-to-date. BIOS, kernel, video drivers.
How do I find out which bugs/errors are detected by the system when it is loaded/booted.have seen the emergence of failed in red text briefly but did not have time to read what it says.Would prefer to send a log(file containing error log) so experienced users can see if I done something wrong or if it appears to be ok. but how do I do this?
View 2 Replies View Relatedeverytime I try to shutdown/reboot, it gets to the screen where it has the green/bold status messages on the side, but then it simply stops. The cursor doesn't blink, nothing happens...you could wait 10 minutes, and it would still be at that same screen. I don't know if I've described this well enough for anyone to understand, but I hope so! I don't have a camera, but if I did...I'd post a picture of where I mean...
But like I said, after getting to a certain, without actually shutting down, it simply stops and does absolutely nothing. This is rather inconvenient, and I'd like to find a solution to this if possible. EDIT: I'm sorry I didn't provide any hardware info, but I'm using Gnome...This didn't happen 100% of the time KDE like it does now though. (But it DID happen in KDE as well) I'm using OpenSUSE 11.2... I'll be back in a moment with hardware info, assuming it may aid in a solution.

I did a live upgrade from 11.3 KDE and observe a following issue.When I press the shutdown button on the laptop it initiates the shutdown and shuts down fine but after a significant delay of time (something like 30 seconds). When I click the shutdown button in KDE it initiates the shutdown instantly. This was not the case in 11.3 where the shutdown worked the same regardless of the method that triggered it

View 2 Replies View RelatedI have a netbook, on which I installed the netbook remix. It had ran fine until one day, I shut it down while it was updating. Now, on bootup, it will take me to the login screen and then basically freezes. The keyboard and mouse do not work and I cannot login to any profile. I tried a clean reinstall, but it only finds the preferences I have and sends me right back to the login screen.

Keyboard does not work either (pushing Num-Lock does not toggle the Num-Lock light on the keyboard). However, Alt-Print-b works for a reboot. The only other way out is to turn of the computer.I had this effect some time ago where I thought it was a problem due to the NVIDIA graphics driver. Since then, I changed back to the standard VESA driver and thought the problem would be gone. Just a thought
I toggled through the log files in /var/log which had the file date/time of the crash but I could not find any hint.Which log files could I look as well to dig for the problem? Or any idea for such an effect?
I downloaded OpenSUSE today hoping I could install it on my aging computer, a Pentium 3 1.3GHz, 512MB RAM and a 3dfx Voodoo 5500. When booting into the live CD, I cannot get it to go to the installation. After the GRUB screen (Or whatever is used) to choose install, I just get a black screen. Is 3dfx not supported by OpenSUSE?

As you can see I have some orphaned inodes and these are probley from a Yast2 crashing a couple of times on me getting lockup because a repo was down or not responding.
I have hp pavilion dv6 1386et notebook with windows 7 home premium package. I tried to install suse. But there is something wrong.First I have tried to istall suse 10.3 but installation screen did not appear.Then I tried it with suse 11.2, it was hopeful than 10.3. Installation screen opened and after first rebooting screen have got frozen. So I reboot it manual.Installation only continued with failsave. It has finished, I heard sound of opening system but screen was black.
View 9 Replies View RelatedI am running Opensuse 11.3 which had the KDE desktop loaded by default. I have since installed the Gnome desktop which I access via the log in screen whenever I want to use it.
One thing that is annoying me is that whenever I load gnome I am unable to shut down the computer directly from the gnome panel.
When I click the shutdown button, I want the computer to shut down, but rather gnome exits into the login screen and it is from there that I need to click the shutdown button in order to shutdown the computer.
Is there a way to avoid this and be able to shutdown from the gnome panel?
I do not want to uninstall KDE as a solution, I would like the flexibility of having both desktops.
I noticed that after making my build in suse studio my system freezes immediately after GRUB ( Normal or Failsafe) boot splash screen. I also noticed that this happens only with the specified kernel below. I'm not sure when using Kernel 2.6.37, one had the same problem. I never used it. The original kernel 2.6.34 had no problems such as the one I have described. My systems has no further problems only that it takes several restarts to go past the "Freeze". Below is a list of my system specs:

Kernel-pae 2.6.38.2-4.1 from Kernel Stable.
GRUB 0.97-174.1 from openSUSE 11.4
Upstart 0.6.5-33.1
xorg-x11-server 7.6_1.9.3-142.1 from X11:xorg 11.3 repo.
The GRUB from openSUSE 11.4 has been very stable and non-problematic. I will be buying an Intel core i5-2500K in a few months that's why I need the latest kernel and XOrg-X11-server. What could be causing the freezing?
My machine will not shutdown - It goes through the motions, it closes everything the green suse screen appears and the progress bar goes to the end. Then it flashes the keyboard lights and spins the disk down and then stops with the green splash screen - I have to press the power button to turn off.
View 6 Replies View RelatedI've made a Live CD of version 10.04 on a machine running 10.04 (amd64). The disk boots fine on a 2nd machine but does not boot on the machine that created it. The CD/DVD is new and works for other things so I don't think it is this. The Live CD gets to the ISOLINUX screen but instead of "Loading" the screen goes blank and the system shuts down. I've tried everything I can think of (the disk works fine on another machine).

i have just put a Geforce 7300 GT graphic card into my machine the problem is the max resolution I can get is 1024x768 at 60 hz the screen is a benq fp71g+. also the screen goes blank when i click on the display icon in system settings. i know that the screen can be run at 1280x1024 so I don?t know where the problem is.
View 3 Replies View Relatedever since i started using opensuse at the end of december, this has been bugging me. when i try to watch a full-screen videos video in either chromium or firefox, it lags to the point where maybe i'm getting 0.5 frames per second. ironically, when i launch chrome in virtualized windows 7 (virtualbox) to watch a full-screen flash video it looks smooth as butter. yes, even with the virtualization overhead and everything.
i'm using adobe flash 10,3,181,22 from the opensuse repositories, chromium 15 and firefox 5. i'm on a 64-bit system.

when I look for flash programs installed in Yast I get two things

Pressing the shutdown or restart buttons in XFCE simply logs me out and leaves the system running. I did some Googling and it was suggested that by default users don't have permission to shutdown. (not sure how this is a XFCE specific problem in that case but moving on...)
I've taken the following advice:
For a "desktop" system that wants to protect itself from casual attacks (and "puzzled penguins"), but still grant the user control of their system, run the following as "root":

polkit-auth --user $USER --grant $OPT
done
Where <your_userid> is the name of your unprivileged account. I wasn't entirely sure how to run it, so I stuck it into a shell script and ran that with the sudo command. Needless to say it hasn't worked. Is there an easy "sure fire" way to fix this problem, hitting the shutdown button repeatedly to test really grates on you after a while. BTW, Pressing the power button on the front of the system shuts it down okay.
Recently upgraded from OpenSuse 11.1 to 11.2 and although it didn't go smoothly the first time (computer hung), I was able to complete the install and start. I have added and updated the required repositories.
The following problems persist:
1. I can't shutdown normally. The black screen before shutdown shows something on the lines of 'segmentation fault'...and also 'cannot find fstab or mtab'. I have to restart into Failsafe mode which shuts down properly.
2. Amarok keeps crashing. It used to work fine in 11.1 and I think its one of the best media players out there so I am wondering why. I do have other players and I have used the debugging reporter option for Amarok.
I have recently created a KDE 4 desktop using suse studio, it boots up fine on my machine, but doesn't shutdown!!
On my mum's laptop, which I will be using it most on, (it's windoez) it won't start KDE 4 at all! I can use the console, but I wanted to impress her with the amazing GUI and Compiz. And you can't make presentations or browse the web in a console, can you?
And sudo poweroff and sudo shutdown -h now don't work either!
