I'm running Ubuntu 10.04, and ever since last upgrade a couple of days ago (I think), everytime I hit shutdown on the gnome-panel (admittedly, I haven't tried the command line shutdown) the computer restarts itself. This computer is dual-booted with Win 7, and the shutdown command there properly halts the system.

I can chose Shutdown from the menu but the system gets to the point where the power supply should 'click' and shut off. It doesn't, it cycles and the system reboots. It wasn't doing this in 10.04, at least not towards the end prior to updating to 10.10 beta/rc/final. Also, 10.10 didn't do this either, until recently. (Current default = 2.6.35-22-generic)
Here's the funny thing though; if I choose a previous version from the GRUB2 menu, 2.6.32-21-generic for example, the login screen won't allow mouse nor keyboard control but will shut down normally w/ a single, momentary push of the Power Button. Now, there are folks w/ a seemingly similar problem, but in their case they can't shutdown at all. My trouble is a shutdown just triggers a restart.
I want my server to automatically shutdown at 23:59 and startup at 8:00. The startup is handled through by bios but the shutdown is to be managed through cron. I thought I had this working, I actually swear I had it working because I thought the uptime command showed the appropriate uptime. I happened to be up and was streaming a movie from my server when at the time it should've shutdown it actually just restarted. If I run the shutdown -h now command by itself it works well but the scheduled command just restarts the server. Here is the what is shown when I enter crontab -e.

View 2 Replies View RelatedAbout two weeks ago I installed ubuntu 9.10 desktop with a dualboot to my windows 7, which was already on there. everything went fine, but I couldn't configure my wireless to work, so after a few days I gave it a rest and basically forgot about; I just stuck with windows. anyways, yesterday night I installed a program called solidworks on my system. I woke up this morning, turned on my computer, and this is what happened-
it turns on for about 5 seconds, but when it hits "grub loading", after about half a second it restarts. it's basically an infinite loop, until i throw in a cd or hit f8, but I don't know what to do with either of those options, so I'm kind of stuck.
I'm posting this in the ubuntu forums because I have NO idea what's wrong with it, and no idea of where to start. I've got both installation disks, but I don't know what to do when I put them in. I've got an intel pentium 4 processor, and like i said, i've got a dualboot with windows 7 and ubuntu 9.10.
this problem has really been getting at me, I can't figure it out at all. About a week ago, I came home from school and found that my computer was shut down (usually I leave it on), I started it up in Windows 7 and a Malware Bytes scan said it found a virus "clipb.exe". Well, I decided to remove it, and when booting up in windows it BSOD's saying IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL immediately at the login screen. Same result in safe mode and "last known configuration". Well, I decided to reformat just because I didn't want to go through too much trouble, and about a week later (today) it came back. I have no clue how, I was away from my computer. But the difference between this time and last time is, I can't start ubuntu at all. period. It gets to grub, and then after that gets to a black screen with no progress. The only thing I can do is ctrl+alt+dlt which restarts the computer.

I've come across a problem just recently where my laptop will restart after I shut it down from within Debian. I've looked into my BIOS for anything that might trigger this, but could not find anything. I run Debian Testing 64-bit on a Dell Inspiron 17R laptop.

When I put the disk in and tried the demo and full installation option (or something along those lines), and then restarted my computer, it came up to the start up screen, and asked me if I wanted to run Ubuntu or Windows Vista. So I chose Ubuntu it came to the motherboard screen or whatever and that's it. Nothing else happened, I waited for about 20-30 minutes and it was still there.
So that's my issue, I tried the second option about installing inside of windows but for some reason I just get an error message saying I can't do that whenever it finishes loading. I'm trying to install the latest version 10.10, my computer definitely has the memory for it all
I am having a re-occuring problem with Grub. The problem seems to occur about once every 15 or so times that I start up. Basically, it gets past the Samsung branded screen but before it goes to the Grub screen, the computer will restart - it just continually gets to this point and restarts until I shut down with the power button. The problem is easily fixed by re-installing Grub using an ubuntu CD. Things will then run fine for about a week and the same problem will occur.

View 9 Replies View RelatedI had perfectly working lucid on my laptop (64 bit) which I installed from a live CD not wubi. I tried to upgrade with update-manager and everythingooked fine until I accidentally updated compiz from the cache before everything else finished. this made compiz stop working completely, which also broke metacity. I tried to fix this with multiple things: Downgrading compiz (failed to apply changes), sudo apt-get install -f, finishing the upgrade (see the following).
during the applying changes stage of the upgrade i got an error with almost every package it tried to apply (sorry I don't know what, but it said something about 'this package failed to upgrade and may be left in a broken state'. I let the upgrade finished and at the end it said 'Upgrade Finished but not all changes were successfully applied' and I shut down the computer. when I turned it back on everything looked fine until I past to the usplash screen. Then the screen went black, a bunch of error messages scrolled by too fast to read, and my system rebooted.
I tried recovery mode and another kernel choice at grub but all did basically the same thing. Windows still works as much as it usually does but I want my ubuntu back! I am OK with doing a fresh install if I can somehow recover a small amount of my data in my home folder. If you can tell me how to get into ubuntu from windows or something that would be great but I also need to know how to decrypt my home folder (I used the encrypting option in the installer)
I know this is an issue that has been brought up before and the solution I found is to recover Grub through the live CD [URL] However, this problem has occurred multiple times for me now. First time I thought it was just a freak error but it's happened multiple times within a short period of time (couple times this week) so I just wanted to get input on what's causing this and how I can fix it permanently. I've recently installed Ubuntu and I'm dual booting Ubuntu 9.10/Windows 7 Ultimate 64bit.
View 9 Replies View RelatedI followed a tutorial to install XP across my entire HDD. I installed Ubuntu 10.10 "Alongside another OS". Ubuntu loads fine, but when trying to load XP, the boot screen shows up, but then the computer restarts and returns to the GRUB menu.
I saw some threads on this site and tried to type: sudo gedit /boot/grub/menu.lst
In the terminal. It returned a blank text document so I'm not sure if that information was outdated. I then typed: sudo fdisk -l
And got this:

Everytime I try to boot ubuntu, it doesn't even show that screen where you choose the kernel, it just go back to the post screen.
I use ubuntu 10.4 installed via wubi in a dual boot system with Windows 7. And I have a Dell Inspiron 1545.
Sometimes when I shutdown Ubuntu 10.10 and try to turn on the desktop PC it fails. I then have to disconnect tower from the power source and plug it in after waiting a few minutes. This problem first started in Ubuntu 9.10. I have a hunch that it happens because I am shutting down with applications open.
I was told that this is a batter issue on my motherboard, but I've replaced it and still have issues.
My ubuntu won't shut down, it stops at the ubuntu logo (with the dots under it). It seems like the OS completely and successfully shuts down, also the harddrive spins down too, except for the computer. I belive this might have happened after I updated my bios. (due to hybrid gpu trouble)I did search on the internet, and found that it might be some ACPI related issues, and that I have to edit the grub's menu.lst file and add acpi=force.However my menu.lst file is blank, there is nothing in there.
I have tried to shutdown via the terminal too, but the same happens there. Last time I checked it successfully reboots, and standby works correctly. For me to shutdown this laptop, I have to remove the battery and the power cord for it to shutdown, or hold the power button for 10 secs, which is really annoing
just recently I upgraded from 9.10 to 10.04. Now whenever I shut down computer gets stuck after umounting disks etc, so I have to shut down using power button, similar to this error[URL]

However, there is one issue: when i go to restart or shutdown the computer, the graphical interface goes away like it should, it goes to CLI and does it's shutdown routine....the problem occurs about 2 seconds into the routine, when it just stops. it doesnt shutdown or restart, but stays in the CLI with a blinking cursor. if i allow it to set for a couple of minutes, a message pops up that says something like this, "BUG: soft lock up CPU0 CPU1 stuck, blah blah". any ideas on what this is or what is causing this? the laptop has the i5 processor in it, just in case that matters
View 6 Replies View RelatedThis isn't stricly an Ubuntu question, but it is in the cause of an Ubuntu-powered home server Essentially: does wake-on-lan work if the computer is Shut Down (ie to all intents and purposes 'off' except for the hardware switch on the back), assuming that the motherboard and network interface (which in my case are one and the same) support wake-on-lan?
Also, if wake-on-lan is turned on, will this mean power going to anything other than the network interface (e.g. will PSU, CPU, case fans still be on?)Finally, will all of this work on Ubuntu 10.10 (assuming that the computer components are compatible)?
EDIT: Just to be clear, the Ubuntu system will be receiving the wake-on-lan 'call' (from a Squeezebox, though from my very limited knowledge of this stuff I don't think the source matters)
My laptop randomly shuts off, at first I thought it was an issue with the laptop overheating but during the install of 11.04 I made sure the laptop had a fan blowing on it constantly and checked it and determined it couldn't have overheated. My problem now is that I was able to use a live cd to access my old files but was presented with only two files stating that my files were encrypted, I'm don't ever recall encrypting my files and so I'm without a passphrase.
What I'm wondering, is there a way to gain access without the passphrase? Or is there a way to fix the corrupt install?
I used to like having that Red Shutdown Button on the top panel in the far right corner next to my name on older Ubuntu versions. It was easy to add with the 'Add to Panel' right-click feature that Unity eliminated. Is there a way to put that Red Shutdown button back on the far right top? IMHO it works better than the present Unity shutdown button.

I am working with distro one and a half year now (of course I was doing updates all this period) The last twenty dates if I have a quite heavy session I can not log off (or shutdown the computer) I even tried from konsole qdbus org.kde.ksmserver /KSMServer logout 0 0 0
even that did not work (well right now I can not launch any new apps from kde, but I still work with the already running).
just ran the obligatory kernel update for Karmic 9.10 and now my computer doesn't shut down when prompted to do so. It tries...goes through the logoff, makes all the motions and then hangs at the very end.
Reinstalled Ubuntu...same thing after kernel update.
I have an 80GB HDD where I installed Windows XP first and then Ubuntu. The thing is that whenever I shut down my computer and then turn it back on (wether it's right away or a few hours later, or the next day), I get the GRUB screen where you have to choose Ubuntu, but after that just a completely black screen. I then have to force a shutdown, then turn it back on, and it works. Whenever I restart it works too, this seems to happen only after a shutdown.

Is in Ubuntu option, that can shutdown computer after time or at defined time? I think: I have turned on my computer and I will need to automatically shutdown computer after 4 hours or at 21.00 pm. Is there option, if computer can automatically turn on at defined time?

This usually happens when your computer does not shutdown correctly, shutdown without unmounting/removing usb. Please run the chkdsk /r" I already ran that many times nothing happens. I have Windows XP Pro 32bit.
