OpenSUSE Install :: Won't Boot / Shutdown - Resolve This?

Jul 6, 2010

I have recently created a KDE 4 desktop using suse studio, it boots up fine on my machine, but doesn't shutdown!!
On my mum's laptop, which I will be using it most on, (it's windoez) it won't start KDE 4 at all! I can use the console, but I wanted to impress her with the amazing GUI and Compiz. And you can't make presentations or browse the web in a console, can you?
And sudo poweroff and sudo shutdown -h now don't work either!

OpenSUSE Install :: 11.2 Re-boot/shutdown Black Screen?

Jan 6, 2010

I have been trying to fix this for some time, on and off, and have been unable to, I have also ben unable to find a solution in the forums.I have installed openSUSE11.2 GNOME on a laptop, the install went fine, and it runs great, except for two problems:When I start up the splash screen doesn't show (this isn't really important, and I am happy to watch as everything is loaded)When I shutdown/reboot the computer freezes and I have to use the power button to switch off. This doesn't happen every time I shutdown, but most of the time. The freeze happens at different points of shutdown, so I don't know where to find what is causing the problem. As I mentioned point 1 is not really important, although I would like to know why this is happening, but problem 2 is very important.

When I click the shutdown button in KDE it initiates the shutdown instantly. This was not the case in 11.3 where the shutdown worked the same regardless of the method that triggered it

Installation :: Ubuntu Doesn't Boot After Install / Resolve This?

Jan 5, 2010

I'm trying to dual boot 9.10 with Vista on an HP Pavilion Slimline (AMD64). I've tried both booting from a disk and using Wubi, and neither has worked. Booting from the disk takes me through the screen where I can choose to try Ubuntu without installing, but after selecting that, the desktop didn't load, the screen just went to black.

I decided to try Wubi, and it went well enough. Everything in windows worked, and upon rebooting, it was able to finish checking the installation. After one more reboot, I selected Ubuntu from the Windows boot manager, and then the grub command prompt appears. I can't seem do anything after that except reboot.

I have no idea what's going on with this computer.

Hardware :: Can't Install Boot Loader - Both Grub And Lilo Failed / Resolve This?

Jan 17, 2010

I have a Dell Inspiron 1721. Recently I replaced Windows Vista Home Edition (32 bit) with Slackware Linux 13.

Lilo wouldn't work, when I turned on the computer it printed "Li" and then 20 lines of 090909... and then the computer would hang up. So I just used my Slackware-boot-flashdrive-thing that I created during installation to boot my computer and told myself that I would fix it later.

Also, when I installed, cfdisk (or it might have been sfdisk) complained that /dev/sda did not contain a valid MS-DOS partition table. fdisk still worked, so I used it to create a new table, and cfdisk worked fine and the installation went along normally.

I reinstalled Slackware about two days later (I realized that I had installed the 32 bit version instead of the 64 bit). Lilo still didn't work.

I thought it might be something wrong with the Slackware DVD, so I downloaded and attempted to install about 4 different distributions. None of the CDs would work. The computer would start up, Linux would start to load, and the computer would freeze.

Xubuntu was the only distro I had that I could get to install. Halfway through the installation, (Surprise!) I got an error, something like "Package Grub failed to install, you will not be able to boot your new operating system".

The rest of the install went fine, so I restarted my computer and tried to use another one of my CDs to boot Xubuntu. I got the error "/dev/sda does not contain a valid partition table", and later "ext4-fs: checksum failed on dev sda at sector...", and "please specify a valid partition for root=". I am absolutely positive that I entered the correct partition, I triple checked and entered other partition names to make sure.

I'd also like to add that the computer makes horrible crunching noises when it starts up and when I do stuff like press keys. So is something seriously wrong with my hardware, or is there another explanation for all of this? Because I really don't want to have to try to repair the computer and can't pay to have it repaired.

OpenSUSE Install :: Unable To Create USB Stick / Resolve This?

Feb 11, 2010

I'm new here, an Ubuntu user who would try Opensuse for a while. That is if I'm able to launch the thing !
I'd like to create a Live Usb Stick to test it and install it if I like it but it doesn't seem to work.

I tried the website method, using "Win32DiskImager.exe" but the program doesn't work for me (WinXP) : it looks like it's writing but when the "Done" message is prompted, I'm unable to access the usb key, Windows says it's not formatted. That doesn't look right...
I tried with LinuxLive Usb Creator but the boot process fails and Universal-Usb-Installer doesn't offer an Opensuse option.

Is there another way to install the distribution on an USB stick ? I could still try through Ubuntu but that would be quite surrealistic.

OpenSUSE Install :: Can't Resolve Host For Yast2 In Console?

Sep 3, 2011

It's been a while since I've use linux (specifically suse). But my wife and I are expecting our first child and our office/second bedroom is now being converted into the baby room. I built the computer that is currently in there and it is a really nice one that I do not want to get rid of. Two 500GB Sata2 drives and 8Gigs of RAM (not to mention my quad-core Phenom AMD processor and sweet asus motherboard) -- I just can't get rid of it. So what I planned to do was turn it into a small home server. I did some research and kept coming back to using opensuse as the server. I read this article The Perfect Server - OpenSUSE 11.4 x86_64 [ISPConfig 2] | HowtoForge - Linux Howtos and Tutorials and it seemed to have just about everything I'd like to do (maybe some extras that I don't really need, but might in the future). Everything was going fine until I got to a certain point. The install went fine, and I was starting to customize some of the settings for my own home setup. Now, the problem...

I've gotten to page 3 of the tutorial The Perfect Server - OpenSUSE 11.4 x86_64 [ISPConfig 2] - Page 3 | HowtoForge - Linux Howtos and Tutorials

and I am installing packages through yast2, and all the packages installed fine except for 'compat-readline4'. I think this is a form of command line editor or something to do with that. I am sure I am going to need it to finish the server set up, but I can't get it installed anywhere. I've tried to install it by pointing directly to the mirror found at rpm.pbone.net and still I get nowhere.

Yast2 auto refresh seems to fail everytime I run it. Even though I installed all the other packages, I get an error message that says it can't get the medium. When I look at the details of the error it says it can't resolve the host for downloads.opensuse.org.

OpenSUSE Install :: 11.1 - XFCE 4.4.3 Will Not Shutdown Or Restart

Dec 15, 2009

Pressing the shutdown or restart buttons in XFCE simply logs me out and leaves the system running. I did some Googling and it was suggested that by default users don't have permission to shutdown. (not sure how this is a XFCE specific problem in that case but moving on...)

I've taken the following advice:
For a "desktop" system that wants to protect itself from casual attacks (and "puzzled penguins"), but still grant the user control of their system, run the following as "root":
USER=<your_userid>
polkit-auth --show-obtainable | while read OPT; do
polkit-auth --user $USER --grant $OPT
done

Where <your_userid> is the name of your unprivileged account. I wasn't entirely sure how to run it, so I stuck it into a shell script and ran that with the sudo command. Needless to say it hasn't worked. Is there an easy "sure fire" way to fix this problem, hitting the shutdown button repeatedly to test really grates on you after a while. BTW, Pressing the power button on the front of the system shuts it down okay.

OpenSUSE Install :: Upgraded From 11.1 To 11.2 - No Normal Shutdown

Mar 13, 2010

Recently upgraded from OpenSuse 11.1 to 11.2 and although it didn't go smoothly the first time (computer hung), I was able to complete the install and start. I have added and updated the required repositories.

The following problems persist:
1. I can't shutdown normally. The black screen before shutdown shows something on the lines of 'segmentation fault'...and also 'cannot find fstab or mtab'. I have to restart into Failsafe mode which shuts down properly.
2. Amarok keeps crashing. It used to work fine in 11.1 and I think its one of the best media players out there so I am wondering why. I do have other players and I have used the debugging reporter option for Amarok.

OpenSUSE Install :: Migrated To 11.3 - Now Shutdown Freezes Up

Sep 26, 2010

The screen goes blank with the arrow pointer frozen in place. Hitting enter or ctrl-alt-esc has no effect. One time, I walked away for 30 minutes to see if it would resolve itself, but there was no effect.

I saw someone is having a similar problem with the 64-bit version, but there were no responses. Where do I go from here?

OpenSUSE Install :: Shutdown Fails To Turn Off The PC?

Nov 17, 2010

this problem is a well known one as far as I have read, but the solution is yet to come.I formatted and installed OpenSuse 11.3 KDE as the only OS on a PC with 768 RAM, two Hard Disks (6+8 GB), mobo Abit BE6, processor Celeron Coppermine 1100Mhz (with slotket adapter), video card Matrox G400+, Sound Blaster Live! Value.HD 1 is set root and ext4 + 1 GB swap, HD2 is /home ext3.The live OpenSuse CD worked fine, shutdown turns off the power, while the installed one won't. I formatted twice, and the problem persist. Reboot works fine.At shutdown, the hard disks are turned off while the screen and power are still on, so I have to press the power button to turn off completely.

Yesterday I wasted all the day with this problem without solving it, I've read many threads but no solution worked. That PC obviously worked fine with both Windows 98 and XP.Those problems are in the "out of the box" installation, without any setting altered.I've tried disabling ACPI, PM control by APM, and power management features in the bios (latest 2001's Award bios for this old mobo).I've set alternatively pci=noacpi, nosmp, apm=power-off, acpi=force in GRUB options. I've updated the distro. I've set value poweroff for HALT in etc/sysconfig. Nothing changed.I've also tried macumba and ancient celtic cerimonies, yet they didn't work.Is it possible to solve this problem or it's a known unsolved bug?
