OpenSUSE Network :: Unmount Of CIFS Hangs Or Restart Or Shutdown

Dec 30, 2009

I have a SMB share being mounted during boot using a /etc/fstab entry. All that seems to work fine, but on shutdown or reboot I found that the system hangs for a variable period trying to unmount the share. It appears from the log that the unmount is happening after the network connections are closed. Is there someway around this, or is there some other way I should be mounting the share so that it is closes successfully at restart or shutdown?

OpenSUSE Install :: OpenSUSE 11.4 Delayed Shutdown While Pressing The Shutdown Button?

I did a live upgrade from 11.3 KDE and observe a following issue. When I press the shutdown button on the laptop it initiates the shutdown and shuts down fine but after a significant delay of time (something like 30 seconds). When I click the shutdown button in KDE it initiates the shutdown instantly. This was not the case in 11.3 where the shutdown worked the same regardless of the method that triggered it

Ubuntu :: Hangs On Splashscreen During Shutdown?

Jun 11, 2010

Ubuntu hangs on splash screen when shutting down and restarting after creating startup scrip.

I created the upstart script using the following method:

sudo gedit /etc/init.d/local.autostart "Edit local.autostart"

sudo chmod +x /etc/init.d/local.autostart And sudo update-rc.d local.autostart defaults 80. After this ubuntu hangs on the splash screen during shut down. If I remove the script by doing: sudo update-rc.d -f local.autostart remove

Then ubuntu can restart once again.

Ubuntu :: 10.04 Hangs On Shutdown Splash?

Sep 19, 2010

When I'm shutting it down it hangs on the splash screen. The screen then fills with white in a weird way; it's hard to describe but it's like watching film become exposed to air. It almost looks like there's something wrong with the screen but there isn't. I have no idea why it could be doing this.

My laptop is a Toshiba Satellite A305D.

Ubuntu :: 10.04 Occasional Hangs On Shutdown?

Feb 10, 2011

Shutting down sometimes hangs during the purple ubuntu shutdown screen. This especially happens when shutting down via ssh.

For example, sometimes I need to leave and wait for some operations to finish. Later, I ssh into the machine to sudo shutdown now. It tells me it's going down and disconnects me and all, but when I get home the shutdown screen is still on with a few white and red dots (those that are animated during shutdown).

When this happens, I do a slow Alt + SysRQ + R, E, I, S and U before I manually power down in order to keep my file systems happy.

Also, shutting down sometimes leaves me with a black unresponsive desktop. I can login through ssh and do a /etc/init.d/gdm restart and my desktop (or login screen) comes back.

I am running Ubuntu 10.04 LTS x64. I was running X86 before and I had the same issues with the shutdown hang. After a clean install of x64 it took a few weeks before I got the same symptoms again. The black desktop thing is new with x64.

what to do the next time this happens in order to find out why it's happening?

Ubuntu :: Fglrx Hangs On Shutdown?

Apr 3, 2011

I'm not 100% certain, but I'm fairly sure that fglrx is preventing clean shut downsHardware is an ASUS E-35M1-I Deluxe, so fairly new, and I'm running Ubuntu natty.I couldn't find anything damning in the logs under /var/log, so I'm not sure where I can look to find the specific errors. All I know is that when I'm running with fglrx shutdown takes forever, as if it's waiting for the X server, and it just never shuts down cleanly, but when I run with the standard radeon driver everything shuts down quickly and cleanly.Sometimes when I tried to execute a "service slim stop" or "service gdm stop", the whole system would hang, and needed a hard reset.

Debian Configuration :: When Shutdown Screen Always Stays On And Then It Hangs

Dec 12, 2015

I'm using Debian Sid xfce on my lenovo laptop. When i try to shutdown, the screen always stays on (the fans turn off). It says "reached target shutdown", then this happens: [URL] .... and then it hangs. I have to press the power button to shut it down. (I have the same problem with reboot). I had the same issues with Jessie.

Things i tried so far and didn't work:

Code: Select allshutdown -h now
shutdown -p now
halt
poweroff
systemctl poweroff
init 0

I edited /etc/default/grub and added the following options at "GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT":

acpi=force, acpi=off*, acpi=noirq

*acpi=off: shutdown (not reboot) worked a few times but i didn't have wifi and power manager didn't seem to work

none of them worked..

I have no energy or wake up options at my BIOS.

I found out that i can normally reboot with the Alt + sysrq + REISUB key combination.

Fedora :: System Hangs Due To Kernel Error On Shutdown

I have just made a clean installation of FC12. The only change I have made for now is to disable the NetworkManager and set a static ip address. Then I have to shutdown the computer manually with hardware button. It's no big deal, it's just not that comfortable and I'd really like to know why this is happening.

Slackware :: Firefox Hangs After Update - Better Shutdown At Homepage

Jun 15, 2010

It does seem to shut down better from the home page instead of whatever site I happen to be on at the time of shutting down. I do have a few addons to FF but they were there before the update with no issues. The addons are Gmarks [disabled], Rankchecker, Scribefire, SEO for FF [disabled], SEO Toolbar, Weatherbug and Web Developer. I haven't done any "fixes" so I'm fairly certain I didn't create my own problem.

OpenSUSE Install :: Booting After 11.3 Install - Hangs At A Blank Screen ?

Jun 8, 2011

I recently tried to upgrade my openSuSe 11.1 system using the instructions at:

SDB:System upgrade - openSUSE

I successfully got the system to 11.2, but the upgrade from 11.2->11.3 went awry. The installation froze during the update, and I had to start it over. The first issue I had to deal with was the fact that rpm had been upgraded and zypper hadn't, so zypper wouldn't function because older rpm files that it would search for had been deleted. After rolling back rpm to a previous version, I managed to complete the upgrade to 11.3 and everything looked good. However, when I rebooted the system, it hangs at a blank screen. More precisely, the system seems to get through all of the BIOS stuff and then hang while loading the OS (I assume). Although I've worked on Windows boxes for a long time, I'm a complete novice at OS installations/upgrades for Linux systems, so I'm not even quite sure where to begin to troubleshoot this. Ideally, I'd like to be able to fix the installation on the system to save the data on the hard drives, but I realize this might not be possible. My first thought was to use a recovery tool that I'd seen on some Linux installation CDs, but I see that for openSuSe 11.3 and on that utility has been dropped. I can, however, use the disk to get to the "Rescue" command prompt, so maybe there's something I can do from there?

Debian Configuration :: Manual / Tmp Part Hangs Unattended-upgrades At Shutdown

Dec 3, 2015

Creating a separate /tmp partition manually during install prevents a clean shutdown.

Setup: Debian 8 minimal server configuration (SSH only) using net install as virtual machine on Windows Server 2012 R2 Hyper-V (Gen 2).
1024 MB RAM, 20 GB VHDX, and 1 Processor, EFI boot
Packages installed: openssh-server, sudo, unattended-upgrades, bsd-mailx postfix
Application: IPv6 gateway using 6in4 tunnel

Symptoms: When shutting down the operating system (poweroff or reboot), the message

A start job is running for Unattended-Upgrades ( xx seconds / no limit ).is displayed on the console and will persist for several minutes before eventually timing out and shutting down.I've tried several different configurations. Any configuration that creates /tmp automatically (whole disk with single partition, or disk with separate /home, /var, and /tmp partitions) works fine and shuts down promptly. When I partition the disk manually (512 MB EFI Boot, 17 GB /, 3 GB /var, 512 MB /tmp, and 512+ swap) the problem occurs. I've narrowed it down to just the /tmp partition by testing and comparing various configurations (including/excluding partitions, placing partitions on a separate disk, changing the partition sizes, matching against automatic configurations, etc.).

I have also compared the /etc/fstab and /etc/default/tmpfs configuration file between working and non-working systems and cannot see any meaningful difference.

OpenSUSE Install :: 11.1 - XFCE 4.4.3 Will Not Shutdown Or Restart

Dec 15, 2009

Pressing the shutdown or restart buttons in XFCE simply logs me out and leaves the system running. I did some Googling and it was suggested that by default users don't have permission to shutdown. (not sure how this is a XFCE specific problem in that case but moving on...)

I've taken the following advice:
For a "desktop" system that wants to protect itself from casual attacks (and "puzzled penguins"), but still grant the user control of their system, run the following as "root":
USER=<your_userid>
polkit-auth --show-obtainable | while read OPT; do
polkit-auth --user $USER --grant $OPT
done

Where <your_userid> is the name of your unprivileged account. I wasn't entirely sure how to run it, so I stuck it into a shell script and ran that with the sudo command. Needless to say it hasn't worked. Is there an easy "sure fire" way to fix this problem, hitting the shutdown button repeatedly to test really grates on you after a while. BTW, Pressing the power button on the front of the system shuts it down okay.

OpenSUSE Install :: Upgraded From 11.1 To 11.2 - No Normal Shutdown

Mar 13, 2010

Recently upgraded from OpenSuse 11.1 to 11.2 and although it didn't go smoothly the first time (computer hung), I was able to complete the install and start. I have added and updated the required repositories.

The following problems persist:
1. I can't shutdown normally. The black screen before shutdown shows something on the lines of 'segmentation fault'...and also 'cannot find fstab or mtab'. I have to restart into Failsafe mode which shuts down properly.
2. Amarok keeps crashing. It used to work fine in 11.1 and I think its one of the best media players out there so I am wondering why. I do have other players and I have used the debugging reporter option for Amarok.

OpenSUSE Install :: Migrated To 11.3 - Now Shutdown Freezes Up

The screen goes blank with the arrow pointer frozen in place. Hitting enter or ctrl-alt-esc has no effect. One time, I walked away for 30 minutes to see if it would resolve itself, but there was no effect.

I saw someone is having a similar problem with the 64-bit version, but there were no responses. Where do I go from here?

OpenSUSE Install :: Shutdown Fails To Turn Off The PC?

Nov 17, 2010

this problem is a well known one as far as I have read, but the solution is yet to come.I formatted and installed OpenSuse 11.3 KDE as the only OS on a PC with 768 RAM, two Hard Disks (6+8 GB), mobo Abit BE6, processor Celeron Coppermine 1100Mhz (with slotket adapter), video card Matrox G400+, Sound Blaster Live! Value.HD 1 is set root and ext4 + 1 GB swap, HD2 is /home ext3.The live OpenSuse CD worked fine, shutdown turns off the power, while the installed one won't. I formatted twice, and the problem persist. Reboot works fine.At shutdown, the hard disks are turned off while the screen and power are still on, so I have to press the power button to turn off completely.

Yesterday I wasted all the day with this problem without solving it, I've read many threads but no solution worked. That PC obviously worked fine with both Windows 98 and XP.Those problems are in the "out of the box" installation, without any setting altered.I've tried disabling ACPI, PM control by APM, and power management features in the bios (latest 2001's Award bios for this old mobo).I've set alternatively pci=noacpi, nosmp, apm=power-off, acpi=force in GRUB options. I've updated the distro. I've set value poweroff for HALT in etc/sysconfig. Nothing changed.I've also tried macumba and ancient celtic cerimonies, yet they didn't work.Is it possible to solve this problem or it's a known unsolved bug? Loading OS screen:Those are the final screens after shutdown where it stops

OpenSUSE Install :: 11.3 Hangs During Boot?

Feb 16, 2011

I've looked around the threads and can't find this exact problem. I'm on a Compaq Presario F700 running openSUSE 11.3. During boot it hangs in three different places, all of which I can clear up by clicking the mouse buttons or moving my finger on the pad.

The first place it hangs is after: doing fast boot ^[^[^[creating device nodes with udev

The second place is INIT version 2.88 booting

The third place is copying static /dev content.

Like I said, I can get through all three and everything else works great, I just hate having to watch my machine boot to catch these.
