I have opensuse 11.4 (Gnome + KDE) installed. The problem is with Gnome. When in KDE, everything works fine. But in gnome, when I shutdown/restart, it merely logs off the session. Then I have to shutdown it from the menu in the login screen.
View 2 RepliesPressing the shutdown or restart buttons in XFCE simply logs me out and leaves the system running. I did some Googling and it was suggested that by default users don't have permission to shutdown. (not sure how this is a XFCE specific problem in that case but moving on...)
I've taken the following advice:
For a "desktop" system that wants to protect itself from casual attacks (and "puzzled penguins"), but still grant the user control of their system, run the following as "root":

polkit-auth --show-obtainable | while read OPT; do
polkit-auth --user $USER --grant $OPT
done
Where <your_userid> is the name of your unprivileged account. I wasn't entirely sure how to run it, so I stuck it into a shell script and ran that with the sudo command. Needless to say it hasn't worked. Is there an easy "sure fire" way to fix this problem, hitting the shutdown button repeatedly to test really grates on you after a while. BTW, Pressing the power button on the front of the system shuts it down okay.
recently I installed opensuse 11.4 in my Dell optiplex 790 desktop. everything works well. however, when I tried to restart or shutdown my computer . the computer logoff and then "freeze" at opensuse window. I have to turn off the power button forcely and turn on the computer again.
My computer configuration:

Intel i5 3.1G with HD intel graphic card
Bios revision A05
Memory 8G
When trying to "Leave" the system (either via the small button on the lower right of the taskbar or by right clicking on the Desktop and selecting "Leave") the logout / shutdown / restart screen comes up. I have the "Logout" desktop effect activated, which is supposed to desaturated the background when the Leave screen appears. However, instead of simply greying out the background, the image on the desktop and the rest of the screen also gets slightly distorted, with seemingly random distortion effects cropping up all over the place (e.g. horizontal lines or large blurs).
These distortions are different every time the Leave screen comes up. The Leave screen itself is displayed fine, and apart from the dodgy background I have no other issues with the whole process (the system shuts down or restarts properly according to my choice). I am using the Radeon drivers, and all other desktop effects I have on (Magic lamb, cover switch, present windows, etc) work fine and without a hitch. It's only the Logout effect that seems to glitch. Are the distortions intentionally created by the effect in order to emphasize the focus on the Leave screen?
I'm in 9.10, I had KDE 4.3 now with SC 4.4, and it doesn't reboot or shut down from any graphical way I can access. Power management works otherwise, and I can shut down from the command line.

View 2 Replies View RelatedAfter NFS mounting some system folders (i.e. lib, usr) of a slave cluster node to /lib & /usr located on the master cluster server I got into some problems: I forgot Ubuntu 10.04 was installed on this particular slave node, while the master node runs 9.10. Now, I am not able to unmount these folders using umount, or restart the system using shutdown, I get some error: " /lib/libblkid.so.1: version `BLKID_2.17' not found". Is there an alternative way to unmount these NFS shares, or to restart the system to undo the mounts? The systems are located elsewhere, so just physically restarting the system would not be the preferred option.
View 2 Replies View RelatedFor some time now, my laptop makes a quick but loud buzz sound when I shutdown or restart it. Muting my sounds doesn't fix it. Before, it didn't do this. It just started one day and got worse till it happened everytime I shutdown or restart.
Going to preferences > sounds > changing sound theme to no sounds helped a bit and after doing this, it doesn't happen all the time anymore. This is quite disturbing especially when I'm in libraries. What worries me the most though is that it might affect my speaker.
I'm using Karmic btw.
I had recently installed the kernel sources so that I could compile the VirtualBox kernel module to use well but I had not restarted afterwards. I had been using my system problem free until tonight when I decided to restart. I had no internet connection and through ifconfig showing only lo and ifup eth0 returning "device eth0 is not accessible", I discovered I had a bigger problem than at first thought. Then I discovered that no PCI devices other than video were working, and so I referred to /var/log/messages and discoverd a line stating that "/lib/modules/2.6.37.6-0.5-desktop/modules.dep : no such file or directory.
All other entries in that directory were some version of 2.6.37.1-1.2.

I am new to opensuse, coming over from debian based systems. However I am having an issue in which my system will not power off on shutdown. Restarts just fine. i get a missing error during shutdown, but there is nothing to relate the error to on that line. Then the shutdown procedes to The System will be halted immediately then hangs. The keyboard powers off and then thats it. All fans are still running. I have searched extensively on this forum and google.

When I try to re-login the screen (xorg) freezes. I don't know how to debug this problem. The problem could be related to hal or d-bus or policykit or X-org..... simply I don't know. N.B. I can shutdown and restart my machine only as "super-user" (root).

Basically I click it and it pops up with the 30 second count down and then nothing. However I can run as root,

and it will comply and reboot. I did notice that rngd was returning an exit status 1 and after some research decided to uninstall it with no change to anything. I decided to attempt and see if it was just a KDE issue as many problems have been, but when I attempted to log into Gnome I got a very nice white screen with one black line where the taskbar should be. Whether they are related or just coincidence I don't know.
I've ran my google researching skills into the ground on this one and I'm tired and a bit grumpy because I haven't been sleeping so it'd be awesome if I could get a heads up, because to my knowledge it's not reporting any errors it just seems to hang without sending the shutdown signals.

Im running opensuse 11.2 on Linux 2.6.31.5-0.1 64Bit, KDE 4.3.1 with 4GB RAM, Intel duo core processor with Intel graphics card. I initially had opensuse 11.1, which i removed and installed 11.2. Initially everything.Then came the problem, the system starts up fine but then after a few hours freezes, monitor powers off and it wont accept commands from the keyboard or mouse. Meanwhile the lights (caps lock, numeric and scroll) on the keyboard blink. The power light is still on and i can hear the hard disk turning.
I have to forcefully turn the power off and restart but can freeze again after random periods.I do lengthy and demanding computations and its common for the PC to run for weeks without turning it off.
Does anyone know where there might be a log of the shutdown errors I see flash on the screen when I shutdown the system? I thought they'd be in the warning log. Or is there a way to freeze that screen so I can actually read what is happening?

Built new system and installed openSUSE 11.3 x86_64 with Gnome desktop about 6 weeks ago. Have never been able to get the system to shutdown or fully poweroff using the installed OS. If I use the Knoppix live CD - no problem. System boots up fine and shuts down and powers off correctly. With the installed OS, it originally crashed on shutdown and had to power off using the power button. After trying many things, the OS shuts down, powers off the fans etc, but the keyboard is still lit. I cannot restart the system without turning off power at the power supply. Starting my computer by turning off the power supply switch, waiting
10-12 seconds, turning on the power supply switch and then hitting the power button gets to be very annoying after a few weeks.
Installed KDE and switched to that to see what difference it might make. System does not shutdown, but reboots instead. Switched back to Gnome. Have tried sudo /sbin/shutdown -h now and poweroff. Identical behaviour. System is completely up-to-date. BIOS, kernel, video drivers.
I have a SMB share being mounted during boot using a /etc/fstab entry.All that seems to work fine, but on shutdown or reboot I found that the system hangs for a variable period trying to unmount the share. It appears from the log that the unmount is happening after the network connections are closed.Is there someway around this, or is there some other way I should be mounting the share so that it is closes successfully at restart or shutdown?
View 1 Replies View RelatedI'm working on getting a stripped down Ubuntu Lucid installed on an old POS HP PC for a friend. Because it only has 256 MB RAM, I used a minimal CD and the installed lxde as the GUI.Today I was working on it and installed the latest updates and Openoffice-Writer. After rebooting, the shutdown button only gives me Hibernate, Log Out and Cancel. I lost Shut Down and Restart. Searching w/Google shows solutions for other distros such as Arch and Mint, but none that worked for Ubuntu w/LXDE. Either the files to edit don't exist, the groups don't exist (one site said to add the user to the "power" group, no such thing in 'buntu) or the options don't exist (such as System->Administration, which isn't in the menu at all).
HAL and dbus are running, which was the other thing some sites mentioned.So, how do I get the shutdown and restart buttons back? The people that will be getting this machine aren't going to know how to go to a terminal and type "sudo shutdown -h now" everytime they want to shut down.I know the buttons existed before installing the latest updates.
When I shut down the computer, it does not remain shut down. This is different from "restarting" the computer because when I "shutdown" the computer powers down, the fan and disks stop spinning for a second, and then everything starts again. When I "restart" the fan and disks remain spinning throughout the restart process.Further, the computer is dual booting with Windows XP Pro. If I shut down from Windows, the system remains shut down.

I did a live upgrade from 11.3 KDE and observe a following issue.When I press the shutdown button on the laptop it initiates the shutdown and shuts down fine but after a significant delay of time (something like 30 seconds). When I click the shutdown button in KDE it initiates the shutdown instantly. This was not the case in 11.3 where the shutdown worked the same regardless of the method that triggered it
View 6 Replies View RelatedI've got a multiboot system with Windozin the first drive and first partition like everyone recommends. I have several distro's and just let them install their bootloaders, but always on hd0 mbr. I installed Debian 5.0.1 this way and it wouldn't boot, so I got SGD to "fix" it, which it said was successful, but all I get is a partition doesn't exist when I try to boot. I put Debian on /dev/sdb3, I loaded Linux Rescueand mounted sdb3 and verified that its menu.lst had the right boot numbers (hd1,2). fdisk even showns /dev/sdb3 as boot as shown by the asterisk under the boot column. Should I do a complete reinstall of grub, maybe using one of the other distro's as the holder of grub? At one time they did all the grub launching as each addition was made

During System Check when earching for package databases,YaST2 is not able to find /var/lib/rpm/Filemd5s. After a while, a YaST2 box pops up and says that it Successfully rebuilt the package databaseïbut I get the same error when I run System Check again. I've chosen both Rebuild Package Database as well as Revert to Original Package Database (saved by YaST)In both cases, it saysat it was successful, but the same error occurs the next time I run System Check
