The above PC has 2 HDDs installed one has XP and the other Scientific Linux.
Problem: XP needed to be re-installed, i've done this now but now the GRUB Boot loader doesnt load - So just boots straight into XP.
Qustion: Is there anywhere to fix the GRUB? Without wiping the 2nd HDD and re-installing Linux!

View 2 Replies View RelatedFirst time this has happened. I installed Fedora first (XP already installed) and then installed Ubuntu 9.10 64. Fedora doesn't show up on boot up menu. I've tried update-grub.
Before I would have just edited menu.lst, but now?? I dunno.
edit; Here's fdisk with Fedora on sda6
I built a new pc and want to have Suse again. Unfortunately Suse installation does not recognize my CD/DVD device. So I boot from DVD select installation and a few moments later there's a popup 'make sure cd number 1 is in your drive'. I also did try to load other kernel modules but nothing helps. The only drive which is always recognized is floppy drive.
Here are some details about my system: Asrock P55M Pro board, Intel P55 chipset, 2 SATA HDD's, IDE NEC 2510 DVD writer, BIOS is set to AHCI due to Windows.
I tried following:
Use Suse DVD 11.0, 11.2, x86 or x64
Set BIOS to AHCI, IDE (compatible), IDE (enhanced)
DVD writer NEC was used in my former pc and did install 11.0 without probs.
Installing from HDD is new to 11.2 thus I copied the DVD to a directory. During Installation I can select the correct partition but suse is not able to find repositories.(?)
Im a newbie having the opposite issue that seems that everyone is having for what Ive seen, I have Grub on the MBR, showing the splash screen fine (the background image also), and allowing me to boot Windows 7, but I get a cursor blinking for the eternity when trying to boot Fedora 13.My hardware is:

-Phenom 965 BE.
-4Gb RAM.
-3 x 250 Gb SATA Hard disks, first one alone for OS, and the other two in fake RAID1.
-1 x 80 Gb IDE hard drive containing trash.
-RADEON HD 4870 1Gb Graphic Card.

I've just installed Linix 7.0 which I purchased several years back but never got around to installing it. I installed it on an older Compauge notebook . At the requested time I entered the user name and password in the setup program. But now when I try to log in , it does reconize any of the data I entered. Is there a way to reset it. I can't even get into the computer to delete the installation and re-install.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI have a working installation of OpenSuse 11.2 on a 300GB eSATA drive, /dev/sdb. I have a 200GB IDE drive, /dev/sda that I use as a data drive. Both drives are accessible to 11.2 and in use.
/Dev/sdb is actually an IDE drive with an eSata adapter since my mother board only has one IDE ribbon input that I use for /dev/sda and the DVDRW drive.
I chose to install OpenSuse 11.3 on /dev/sda in partition sda1. I've installed 32 bit and 64 bit with the same result. I put grub on the the sda1 partition and chainload to it from 11.2 grub. I'm cautious because OpenSuse can be troublesome during installation.
PROBLEM: The installed system will not recognize the second drive /dev/sdb or any of its partitions. It does not show up on /var/log/messages -- it does not exist!
I believe this problem is with 11.3 because 11.2 recognizes both disks. Perhaps support of eSATA drives.
I've installed OpenSUSE with both DVD and liveCD. When I'm in Open SUSE booted from the CD/DVD, my wireless usb is recognized and I can connect to the network using the icon at the bottom right bar. When I install Open SUSE to my hard drive, my wireless usb seems not to be recognized and I'm not offered to connect to a wireless network.

View 2 Replies View RelatedAfter a few tribulations, I managed to get VMWare server installed. The only problem is that it will not recognize any usb devices. I installed usb in the virtual machine using the VMWare interface and in preparation for that, I followed the instructions in the tutorial to the letter regarding fstab and the vmx file. Supposedly, at least according to Windows control panel, the usb controllers and interfaces are installed. The VMware web interface says the same thing. However, neither the Device tab on VMWare nor VMware Tools show any usb devices. The usb devices - a printer, removable drive, and magicjack - are all recognized by Linux. How can I get the virtual Windows machine to recognize the devices?
This is crucial since my major use for it is to run the magicjack which is not supported in Linux.
everytime i boot up I have to:
# vgscan
# mount -a
what is the command to get suse to automatically run vgscan at boot?
but I know a fair amount about the OS. I really like openSuSE, and I was trying to install 11.2 on my laptop, completely blank hdd. It installed just fine;I used the default options (the partition scheme was /boot, swap, root, /home) and started thesktop without a hitch. However, when I restarted, my BIOS would not even recognize an OS on the hard drive. I was also unable to boot using the installation DVD. I tried to use the repair feature, and I would either get a message saying that the boot loader was corrupt,d could not be repaired, or that the package database didn't match the version of openSUSE installed. I've tried re-installing multiple times, all with the same results. I have tried different partition schemes and I've tried different booting settings, such as enabling boot from root or /boot partition
View 9 Replies View RelatedWhen I tried to upgrade via DVD I had numerous problems and most of them were fixed by installing with automatic configuration. My laptop is a Pavilion dv2000. I added on the bluetooth 2.1 Internal module and it worked perfect in 11.2.
Anyway, bluez won't start and the bluetooth hardware is not recognized by USB.
My computer have Windows XP installed and now I want to install suse 9.0. I insert the boot disk (disk 1) and reboot my machine. Then on the boot option window, I select 'installation'. Then comes the error: cannot find SUSE installation CD. Activating Manual.... Then 'English'-->'English(US)'-->'Installation'. Then comes another error: Cannot mount CD-ROM.

View 9 Replies View RelatedI started another thread about this to get help booting into openSUSE after Fedora rewrote my bootloader and deleted all other entries. I managed to fix it but I never did find out why the following commands caused my system to boot to the grub shell instead of the grub menu.
Code:
grub
root (hd0,3)
setup (hd0)
quit
reboot
Can anyone explain to me why these commands caused my system to boot directly to a grub shell? It's as if there were no /boot/grub/menu.lst files for it to use, but after I got everything back to normal, the files were still there.
If it helps, this is how the drive was setup before and now, except Fedora was on /dev/sda4 and has since been deleted.
Code:
Device Boot Start End Blocks Id System
/dev/sda1 1 262 2104483+ 82 Linux swap / Solaris
/dev/sda2 263 13316 104856255 83 Linux
/dev/sda3 * 13317 14621 10482412+ 83 Linux
I have a used PC that came pre-installed with suse 11.2.Unfortunately, I do not have the install disk to use in case of whatever.I already know that when configuring a dual boot with Windows and Linux, it is recommended to install Windows first.I do not have that luxury now as 11.2 is installed and GRUB is the boot loader.Question is, if I boot the Windows 98 install disk on boot, how to not mess up GRUB and still add Windows 98 to GRUB menu?
One hard drive only here. 98gb free.It seems that W98 install will overwrite GRUB in this situation - causing problems. Maybe not, I don't really know for sure.I just need to install windows 98 on the same hard drive and if possible, have suse and w98 visible on boot in GRUB.
I have installed 11.2 next to my 11.1 version I have a few big problems with 11.2 and I like to completely remove it. there are 2 grub's active now. I want to remove the 11.2 grub and make the 11.1 grub master again, but I do not know where to change this, the MBR points to the 11.2 grub and changing menu.lst probably does not have any effect.
View 6 Replies View RelatedI have have just installed 10.10 on my Acer Aspire laptop. I connected to the Internet during installation and therefore should be right up to date. Grub2 does not show Windows 7 as a boot option. Did a bit of searching and ran sudo update-grub2 but no success. I am a newbie as far as Ubuntu is concerned. I installed 9.04 on my netbook and that worked fine. I have the added problem in having to get into Windows very shortly and I haven't a clue how to do it if grub remains broken. Windows partition still there I have not deleted it.
