OpenSUSE Install :: System Broken After Update / What To Do?
Dec 10, 2010
Recently i add a lot of repositories for new apps but do0ing a zypper up after that left left many things broken ,first the my system has added 2 more entries in grub menu namely, opensuse 11.3 desktop-2.6.34.7 and opensuse 11.3 desktop-2.6.34.7-(failsafe) why are these added and now when I simply boot opensuse11.3 from menu though it starts but has no sound and typical errors shown .
Firefox is broken. how could I reach a stable state now I have these repos only code...
I was doing a kernel update and can no longer boot into 11.3. I am dual booting with XP. I get Grub screen but no longer see Suse as a boot option, only Windows. I have tried to reinstall, but for some reason I can't get it to boot with DVD. So, is there a way that I can repair my computer without doing a reinstall?
I had recently installed the kernel sources so that I could compile the VirtualBox kernel module to use well but I had not restarted afterwards. I had been using my system problem free until tonight when I decided to restart. I had no internet connection and through ifconfig showing only lo and ifup eth0 returning "device eth0 is not accessible", I discovered I had a bigger problem than at first thought. Then I discovered that no PCI devices other than video were working, and so I referred to /var/log/messages and discoverd a line stating that "/lib/modules/2.6.37.6-0.5-desktop/modules.dep : no such file or directory.
All other entries in that directory were some version of 2.6.37.1-1.2.
Unfortunately I had to end up reinstalling because witho
There is a problem with dependency resolution for the recent updates; i can't update my system even with the skip-broken, there is something to nautilus and phyton-devel and phyton, pls, take note of these.
how to update my system online (for example my firefox 3.0 to 3.5) but i can't figure out how this possibly works. I tried the "online update" using Yast2 but apparently (according to Yast) there is nothing at all to be patched on my system. I tried to click on the Firefox-3.5.5 rpm in the repository web-interface and open it using "install software" but the process aborts because of unresolved dependencies. Is there an easy way to update software without having to download/install every dependency manually?
I upgraded my Dell 2.53G machine from 10.3 to 11.2 (KDE desktop). Everything seemed fine for the first day. Then the whole desktop froze. No screen update, no keyboard, and, though you could see the mouse move, clicking didn't do anything. The only way out was to pull the plug.
After multiple attempts at fixing it failed, I repartitioned the disk and tried a "clean install". Everything worked for about 2 hours. The system is currently frozen. The harddrive is quiet. The only "3rd party app" was Adobe Flash, pulled from the Non-OSS repository.
i have running more than 50 servers with openSUSE 11.2 for a long time without any problems. After upgrading 30 server to 11.3 some of them are freeezing after one or two days. I can ping, but i cannot log in. At the console i can type in the user and the nothing happens, system has to reboot.
All servers are Hewlett Packard Proliant G4,G5,G6 with 32bit and 64bit. No errors or hints in the systemlog.
my system stopped booting after recent update. When I select desktop it goes to splash screen an dies.Have to hit reset key.If I select nomodeset it boots fine excepts graphic resolution is 1280x1024 instead of 1680x1050.System is sandy bridge, Asus P8H67-M EVO, Intel Graphics enabled no other grapics cards, Suse 11.4 64 bit.I do my updates with zypper up.
On my opensuse 11.2 pc, the Decmber 3rd KDE 4.5.4 update proceeded to install all updates except libkdecore4 (and maybe others). libkdecore4 now has a dependency on liblzma5 which is not available. The result is an all white desktop with boxes where the widgets should be.
I found this bug report: [url]
But I can't find liblzma5 in the repository that is listed in the 2nd posting.
I'm using KDE and after some update GStreamer seems to be broken. Firstly it was unable to play sound at all, and I've got around this by changing Phonon preferred engine to Xine. But Clementine is still unable to play with error message:
Clementine Error GStreamer could not create the element: volume. Please make sure that you have installed all necessary GStreamer plugins (e.g. OGG and MP3)
I've already read this and this topic, but none of the things, proposed to try, worked for me.
I'm running Suse 11.2. Xemacs worked fine until I did a security update yesterday. Now, when I try to open a file, the file doesn't open and at the bottom of the window it says 'Loading this file requires xemacs, (null(function-max-args 'throw))'
After the update, the smb daemon will not start: jarfx:/etc/init.d # ./smb start Starting Samba SMB daemon [2011/03/12 09:04:08, 0] lib/fault.c:250(dump_core_setup) Unable to setup corepath for smbd: Permission denied [2011/03/12 09:04:08, 0] smbd/server.c:1134(main) smbd version 3.5.7-1.17.1-2505-SUSE-SL11.4-x86_64 started. I've been having issues with yum for a while now. It won't install anything or update without crashing. When I tried to do 'yum update' after doing 'yum clean all' I got the following error:
Quote:
Error:
It updates the first two "momonga" and "momonga/primary_db", but then it crashes with the error.
I am not sure if I should uninstall/reinstall yum, or fix the repo files individually. I don't even know where to start really since I'm so new at using Linux. I'm using Momonga(fedora core) Linux. I've been able to install programs through the GUI add/remove programs, but not yum. I really want to install Wine, but it doesn't show up in the GUI, so I need to install it manually via yum I guess.
About a week ago, I installed all the updates that popped up. I didn't actually look at what was being installed.
Since then, most of the items in the Yast2 Control centre won't run and just pop up an error box with the following (Firewall):
terminate called after throwing an instance of 'std::logic_error' what(): basic_string::_S_construct NULL not valid YaST got signal 6 at YCP file /usr/share/YaST2/clients/firewall.ycp:20 /sbin/yast2: line 440: 19436 Aborted $ybindir/y2base $module "$@" "$SELECTED_GUI" $Y2_GEOMETRY $Y2UI_ARGS Xlib: extension "RANDR" missing on display "::ffff:127.0.0.1:11.0".
A recent (last couple of days) update to Fedora12 involving libunicap seems to have completely trashed VLC video player -- as in causing it to be completely uninstalled. No biggie, I thought; when I went to reinstall it, I saw that VLC 1.0.5-1 fc12 was available. Tried to install it, and KPackageKit calmly proceeded to throw up, telling me:
Test Transaction Errors: file /usr/lib/libunicap.so.2 from install of unicap-0.9.5-3.fc12.i686 conflicts with file from package libunicap-0.9.8-1.fc12.i686 file /usr/lib/unicap2/cpi/libdcam.so from install of unicap-0.9.5-3.fc12.i686 conflicts with file from package libunicap-0.9.8-1.fc12.i686 file /usr/lib/unicap2/cpi/libv4l.so from install of unicap-0.9.5-3.fc12.i686 conflicts with file from package libunicap-0.9.8-1.fc12.i686 file /usr/lib/unicap2/cpi/libv4l2cpi.so from install of unicap-0.9.5-3.fc12.i686 conflicts with file from package libunicap-0.9.8-1.fc12.i686 file /usr/lib/unicap2/cpi/libvid21394.so from install of unicap-0.9.5-3.fc12.i686 conflicts with file from package libunicap-0.9.8-1.fc12.i686 file /usr/share/locale/fr/LC_MESSAGES/unicap.mo from install of unicap-0.9.5-3.fc12.i686 conflicts with file from package libunicap-0.9.8-1.fc12.i686
Wonderful. Now I don't have a video player that natively does mpg/avi; Dragon Player pretends to play them, but there's no video; same with Xine. BTW, I tried to report this via Bugzilla at Redhat, but couldn't find anything that resembled a way to report an actual bug/problem (what app doesn't work, how it doesn't work, any error messages).
I received an update yesterday and now my analog clock plasmoid is no longer functional. It's strange too because when I change a setting in the plasmoid, it'll magically come to life. I ran plasma-desktop in terminal to catch an error output, but nothing came up.

Toshiba notebook is set up to triple boot win7, mepis 8.5 and os 11.3.Recent update of os11.3 left system with boot failure, "file not found".I booted mepis and used utility to reinstall grub, but no joy. Appeared to install ok but on reboot, sda5 identified as 'mepis' not os11.3 and would not boot. Win7 & mepis boot ok.
Next, booted live Parted Magic and repaired as per another thread here, but again, no joy.NONE of the systems will boot.Rebooted mepis live cd and reinstalled grub again. Sda5 still identified as mepis and will not boot. Win7 & mepis boot ok.
bouncing icon and spinning icon in toolbar for 10-20 seconds, then nothing. Is there a special log file to be found for mozilla errors? (couldn't find anything useful in or near /var/log/messages or warnings all dependencies of associated programmes seem to fulfil dependencies, but obviously something isn't right. Does anyone else have the same problem?
I had a working ubuntu 10.10 system two days ago with kernel 2.6.35-24. I have a gtx 460 card so I have the driver from Jockey/Additional Drivers installed.
Two days ago update manager prompted me to install 2.6.35-25. I've never had problems updating kernels so I did. I Rebooted my machine and gdm/gnome no longer starts. I always get stuck on the tty1 screen. I did some troubleshooting and figured out that my current NVidia drivers seems to be messing it up. So I booted into my older kernel (2.6.35-24) and removed my NVidia driver.
I used these steps to switch from nvidia to nouveau: NvidiaDriverSwitching
I can now boot into my latest kernel (2.6.35-25) but now I'm having problems trying to reinstall the nvidia drivers.
jockey sometimes doesn't list any available drivers. and when it does, it gives me an "System InstallArchive() error" when trying to install.
I tried installing nvidia-current via apt-get and I get these errors:
Code: Setting up nvidia-current (260.19.06-0ubuntu1) ... Removing old nvidia-current-260.19.06 DKMS files... dkms.conf: Error! No 'DEST_MODULE_LOCATION' directive specified. dkms.conf: Error! No 'PACKAGE_NAME' directive specified. dkms.conf: Error! No 'PACKAGE_VERSION' directive specified.
The rsync module "opensuse-full" which worked well so far seems currently broken. It tries to mirror a huge number of additional stuff (factory?) but fails with "permission denied". Any place where I could report this?Command:
I started the upgrade to 10.4 from 9.10 through the update manager. It started the update to 10.4. After downloading almost 95% of the update, it gave an error message of "could not download certain components. downloaded files will not be erased" and stopped the update. I restarted the PC, and started the update manager again. But now it does not show any option of update to 10.4. how do I continue or resume the update process? I just started using ubuntu about 15 days back. So, I am relatively new to this.
i am a new opensuse user from vietnam. I installed opensuse 11.3 last week, and i have a serious problem with repo. I can't enter it . It's mean i can't update (by update applet), install codec, new software, .
im on mint 10 and when I run Update Manager i get this
Code:

Disk 1 of my software Linux-raid mirror failed but not before breaking my OpenSuSE 11.1 (KDE 3.5) domU. Dom0 is also 11.1 and is working fine. I have another domU running a Novell fileserver and I think that is OK too.
Both domU systems have dedicated mirrored partitions and it seems the OpenSuSE guest was sitting on some sectors which went bad. The drive is on its way back to Seagate for replacement under warranty and the rest of the system is plugging along on the remaining 750GB Disk 0.
I want to somehow repair SuSE 11.1. The symptoms are that I cannot VNC into it remotely and can only get in via the dom0 virtual manager in YAST. It won't let me use the partition manager via YAST. It also randomly drops the vnc connection with dom0. YAST won't let me manage software either.
Putting the original DVD in the drive and rebooting doesn't do anything for domU guests. It is only visible to dom0.
I don't want to blow the whole thing away and start again anyway.
Is there any way to do an online repair via the shell?
Jaunty Jack - 9.04. Ran update manager last night and ubuntu-one client failed as part of the upgrade. At a loss as to figure out how to fix this. I have removed the ubuntuone-gnome-client and re-installed from the website but now luck.
I have updated using zypper from 11.1 to 11.2. Does this process update the boot/menu.lst file with an entry for the new kernel? Didn't for me.
Any rate, that's not really the problem. I have created a new entry in menu.lst to load the new kernel but I don't have a ramdisk image - all I have is a broken link initrd -> initrd-2.6.31.5-0.1-default
I'm trying to reassemble a broken raid 5 array. The array has 3 drives. Here is some output from 'mdadm --examine': hutch:/home/sam # mdadm --examine /dev/sdb1 /dev/sdb1: - [URL]
