I can't update, download packages, or even diagnose due to an elusive error.

I have never done anything as root. I posted this request in absolute beginner talk, because I am, but there has been no resolution after three weeks or so.
A couple of weeks ago, I went to run a yum update, but got this message:

I've been running yum with --skip-broken since, but I'd like to know what package I need to get to the service level that xulrunner and firefox need. I'm running Fedora 12.
This has been bothering me for a while. I thought if I waited a dependency would get fixed and the update would work, but it hasn't for a while now. I have included the error when trying to update gcc and the libraries. Skip broken skips everything so no dice there.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI have a computer with 128 ko of RAM (a very old one). I installed yesterday ubuntu 8 because ubuntu 9 requires 512 ko of RAM and was very slow. Now, I have problems to update packages and to install every thing. I changed the sources.list because it seems that links are no more available according to the error messages. (I have put many adresses for ubuntu 9 because I think the kernel is the same not as the kernel for ubuntu 10). But new problems have occurred like "broken dependencies". Now I want to correct, and I don't know how? I'm still a beginner with this OS.

View 3 Replies View RelatedRecently i add a lot of repositories for new apps but do0ing a zypper up after that left left many things broken ,first the my system has added 2 more entries in grub menu namely, opensuse 11.3 desktop-2.6.34.7 and opensuse 11.3 desktop-2.6.34.7-(failsafe) why are these added and now when I simply boot opensuse11.3 from menu though it starts but has no sound and typical errors shown .
Firefox is broken. how could I reach a stable state now I have these repos only code...
I am running Ubuntu 10.10 (amd64) on an Intel Atom 525 motherboard. I have a 5-bay SATA enclosure connected to my system through a Syba SD-SATA2-2E2I PCI card (uses the SIL3124 chipset). Under small to moderate load (transfer speed: ~25 Mb/sec), this setup works perfectly. Under heavy load (transfer speed: ~40 - 70 Mb/sec), the system crashes. By crash I mean I loose SSH connectivity, I can't ping the system, etc. The only solution is a hard reset. Initially, I thought this was a SAMBA problem so I logged into the system and tried doing a copy directly from the SATA enclosure to the system disk (connected directly to the motherboard). After 100 GB copied (at ~75 Mb/sec), the system crashed. My question: I am fairly new to Linux and Ubuntu. How would I go about diagnosing this problem?

By using yum update --skip-broken i am able to update only some applications
i recently switched from slackware to debian because my laptop kept freezing up on slackware, and now it's doing the same on debian on slackware i would get this error in syslog: "hpet: compare register readback failed" at the exact time of lockup, which would leave me with a blinking capslock led indicator, and a completely frozen system (not even magic sysreq sequence would do anything) now on debian, same symptoms only there's nothing in syslog, and no blinking capslock led hardware is: i7 720q intel pm55 chipset nvidia gt 240m laptop model is lenovo ideapad y550p this will occur both in X and at the console i am using my own kernel as the default kernel doesn't support my ethernet adapter i have tried disabling hpet at boot, but there was no difference i have tried the patch posted here

I've been trying all morning to update from a working 9.10 to 10.04 and unfortunately every time I try it blocks me.

I have Ktorrent installed via the repositories and its always worked perfectly. Today I ran software update with KPackageKit and it installed updates. It told me that KTorrent had to be removed to continue and without thinking I hit ok. Now my KTorrent is gone. When I try to install it on the terminal with

I'm not running some strange dev version of anything. I have a standard Kubuntu 10.10 amd64 installation and my KDE version is 4.6.2 from the regular repositories. I run updates (standard repositories) almost every day and have never seen anything like this before.
I've just tried to install amarok 1.4 with the bogdan sources, but now I've broken dependencies in Kubuntu 10.04.

Where does one look in terms of diagnostics after a system lockup and hard reset? For example, one of my computers, running Fedora 14 i686, has taken to locking up quite a bit lately. My only way out is a hard reset. Now, once the thing is booted back up I'd like to try to figure out where the problem lies. Where do I look? Will any of the log files reveal anything relevant to me? If so, what sort of things would I be looking for. Keywords?
This same box also locked up when I had Fedora 14 x86_64 installed. I had read that there were some issues with the newer 64 bit kernels that were causing lockups and / or extremely high loads. This is why I switched back to the 32 bit version, 2 days ago to be exact. The box gets little use. It's a toy really and not my main "daily use" computer. It is, however, running folding@home. Maybe that's where the problem is. About 15 minutes ago I called home and had my wife reset the box, then I logged in from work and stopped the folding service. I'll have to see if it locks up without folding running. Folding was running on this box when I had the 64 bit version installed also.

and etc. those files are actually in /usr/lib64/eclipse/plugins/ but system cannot find them as I see.
It happened after I played with Eclipse's software configs and broke some dependencies there. After I tried removing and reinstalingl eclipse I notices that /usr/lib64/eclipse files don't change and I have the same broken sortware install configuration. So I deleted the folder usr/lib64/eclipse and reinstalled Eclipse. It didn't work. I restored usr/lib64/eclipse from eclipse~ and now see that error log. What is the way to fix it or probably remove eclipse completely and reinstall that /usr/lib64/eclipse/ becomes as it was by default.
I have a fairly old debian distribution running on the linux Kernel 2.6.18-4-686 and I did something silly which has broken multiple packages. I use the manual package installation command (sudo dpkg -i filename.deb) to install a single package (gcc base) however I did this using the latest version of the package which seems to have broken my GCC package completely and I am unable to compile c++ anymore.
When I now load the Synaptic Package Manager it tells me that I have 10 broken packages and when I use the fix feature it tells me I need to update other packages to fix the depencies (it selects almost every single package on my system to be removed at this point!).
I cant change the system too much because the software packages are set up specifically to run a certain application and I don't want to change anything incase I make it stop working!
So my question is this:
If I go to the synaptic Package Manager and uninstall the broken packages (they are all gcc related), will I be able to use the aptitude command to install GCC again? If so will it automatically install the version of GCC that will work with my system? or will it try and install the latest version and then update the rest of my system?
A couple of days ago, I upgraded my Kubuntu to Lucid. In this phase, the system reported that it was impossible to upgrade samba-common, and the installation aborted on 90%. Nevertheless everything is working but KPakageKit, which reports:
"There are broken dependecies on your system. Please use an advanced package manage e.g. Synaptic or aptitude to resolve this situation."
Neither "sudo aptitude safe-upgrade" nor "sudo apt-get -f install" solved the problem:

So the problem is really samba-common.
So i upgraded from 9.10 to 10.04. when i ran update manager after the install, it had some stuff for OpenOffice and during the update it hung. I powered off the laptop and turned it back on, booted into ubuntu and tried over but it didn't list the updates again.

View 3 Replies View RelatedI had a working ubuntu 10.10 system two days ago with kernel 2.6.35-24. I have a gtx 460 card so I have the driver from Jockey/Additional Drivers installed.
Two days ago update manager prompted me to install 2.6.35-25. I've never had problems updating kernels so I did. I Rebooted my machine and gdm/gnome no longer starts. I always get stuck on the tty1 screen. I did some troubleshooting and figured out that my current NVidia drivers seems to be messing it up. So I booted into my older kernel (2.6.35-24) and removed my NVidia driver.
I used these steps to switch from nvidia to nouveau:

I can now boot into my latest kernel (2.6.35-25) but now I'm having problems trying to reinstall the nvidia drivers.
jockey sometimes doesn't list any available drivers. and when it does, it gives me an "System InstallArchive() error" when trying to install.
I tried installing nvidia-current via apt-get and I get these errors:

My recent borked upgrade to -current inspired me to try to come up with a way to sanity-check the lib and bin dirs for broken library symlinks (possibly indicating missing libs) and for binaries and libraries that belong to no installed package, as well as missing dependencies.

I've checked the script results manually, and it appears to be accurate, so I figured I'd post it here for a second opinion, and/or because others may find it useful too. I'm not aware of another popular method of doing this on Slackware, so here it is:

I really enjoy using both ubuntu and fedora. I am finding that I am in some ways perfering fedora over ubuntu, but think that the look and feel of fedora is awful. Basically I would like to make fedora 14 look exactly like Ubuntu (11.04) with unity disabled so technically it is gnome 2.32.1 I really like the "unity-icon-theme" ubuntu offers, as well as the Ubuntu-Mono-Dark
now in ubuntu say I wanted to download the unity icon theme, I would type in:
sudo apt-get install unity-icon-theme and it takes care of the rest by itself,
now in fedora I type: sudo yum install unity-icon-theme Of course it does not work, how would I manually go about copying the unity-icon-theme and or Ubuntu-Mono-Dark theme from Ubuntu over to fedora? I am unsure if "Controls" and "Windows Borders" use the same method, but I would also like to manually copy and enable them in fedora. So the end result is a Fedora box looking exactly like a Ubuntu box?

I started the upgrade to 10.4 from 9.10 through the update manager. It started the update to 10.4. After downloading almost 95% of the update, it gave an error message of "could not download certain components. downloaded files will not be erased" and stopped the update. I restarted the PC, and started the update manager again. But now it does not show any option of update to 10.4. how do I continue or resume the update process? I just started using ubuntu about 15 days back. So, I am relatively new to this.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI've been getting some system freezes when running blender on a new system (using about 1/2 my 8GB memory, AMD Phenom II x6 1090T+default AMD CPU cooler, ECS A880LM-M motherboard, Corsair 1333 DDR3, 2x4GB). PS voltages (measured off MOLEX plug) 12.05VDC and 5.2VDC. Tried BIOS resetting defaults. I'm trying to narrow down the problem with the MEMTEST v4.0. It gets through all tests fine until test #7 (block move) and starts throwing a ton of errors, and about 2/3 of the way through that test it says "unexpected interrupt, halting CPU0." All the listings say "28dbbd11" (this varies from run to run, except the 'Stack:' listing seems to count up from that number). I've tried unplugging one memory module and then swapping them as well as their positions. Same result always: block moves throw errors, followed by halting CPU0. To me this suggests the motherboard or the Phenom II. But I don't know how to test these. Can someone give the next step in diagnosis? I did find this link, but I'm not sure how it differentiates between my error and something specific to either the MOBO or CPU:
