OpenSUSE Install :: Fix Broken 11.1 Xen Guest?
Dec 20, 2010
Disk 1 of my software Linux-raid mirror failed but not before breaking my OpenSuSE 11.1 (KDE 3.5) domU. Dom0 is also 11.1 and is working fine. I have another domU running a Novell fileserver and I think that is OK too.
Both domU systems have dedicated mirrored partitions and it seems the OpenSuSE guest was sitting on some sectors which went bad. The drive is on its way back to Seagate for replacement under warranty and the rest of the system is plugging along on the remaining 750GB Disk 0.
I want to somehow repair SuSE 11.1. The symptoms are that I cannot VNC into it remotely and can only get in via the dom0 virtual manager in YAST. It won't let me use the partition manager via YAST. It also randomly drops the vnc connection with dom0. YAST won't let me manage software either.
Putting the original DVD in the drive and rebooting doesn't do anything for domU guests. It is only visible to dom0.
I don't want to blow the whole thing away and start again anyway.
Is there any way to do an online repair via the shell?

I'm trying to install the Guest Additions for a VM running a guest Lucid Lynx Server. The problem I'm encountering is this: The vboxadd-install.log for vbox says it "couldn't find the sources of your current Linux kernel" and to "Specify KERN_DIR=<directory> and run Make again."

OpenSUSE installed in a Virtualbox Virtual Machine and I want to set a shared folder.
1 - Set up a Virtual Machine and install OpenSUSE 11.2
2 - Create a shared folder on host (HostFolder)
3 - Setup the shared folder in Virtualbox Via the Virtual Machine details or via Devices > Shared Folders...
4 - Install dependencies for running the Virtualbox installer You need to install the right development kernelpackage for your machinetype (use 'zypper search -i kernel' to see what's installed) sudo zypper make gcc kernel-source kernel-hosttype/default-devel
5 - Run the Virtual Machine and go to Devices > Guest Additions This mounts an iso image in your OpenSUSE guest.
6 - Open a root terminal and run
cd /usr/src/linux
make oldconfig && make prepare && make scripts && make dep
cp ../linux-obj/$HOSTTYPE/default/Module.symvers .
make prepare
* A commenter on previously mentioned thread says this step is unnecessary but it doesn't work without on my system. I suggest trying step 7 first and returning to step 6 if that fails. *
7 - Run ./VirtualboxLinux yourhosttype .run from the mounted iso image.
8 - Create shared folder in OpenSUSE (GuestFolder)
9 - Test with sudo mount -t vboxsf HostFolder /home/user/GuestFolder It works? Great! Let's set up the system so it automounts for your regular useraccount instead of root-only access.
10 - Add this line to /etc/fstab HostFolder /home/user/GuestFolder vboxsf defaults,uid=1000,gid=1000 0 0
11 - It works for me but if it still doesn't automount after a reboot; sudo mount -a

Setup:
1. Microsoft Windows 7 64-bit Professional HOST Operating System
2. Oracle VirtualBox 4.0.6r71416 on top of Windows 7
3. Ubuntu 10.04 Lucid Lynx 32-bit GUEST Operating System in VirtualBox
I successfully installed the above configuration on May 15, 2011. I had some difficulty getting the Host-Only VirtualBox Adapter to work. I was forced to make a subtle change to the Windows Registry in order to get the Adapter to work correctly. I was successful. I used the Debian Update Manager to update my installation of Ubuntu. Nothing changed on the Windows 7 side. Now, Windows 7 says that the Host-only adapter is enabled, but I don't have a connection to the Ubuntu OS. I can't use PuTTY or WinSCP. When I invoke ipconfig on the Windows side, 192.168.56.101 is the IPv4 address. When I invoke ifconfig on the Ubuntu side, there isn't anything.

11.2 is installed as a guest under Citrix XenServer 5.5.2. When I try to go to runlevel 5, the X server logs say that /dev/fb0 is not found, and that no screens are found. The only other errors in the log are that it can't locate a core keyboard or mouse.

I have been trying for the last couple of days to upgrade a Xen guest running on Xen Server 5.5 from 11.0 to a more recent version. I have tried both 11.3 and 11.1. The upgrade seems to take, but it fails on the initial boot. It seems that it is expecting the root partition to be on /dev/sda2 - however I believe it is supposed to be /dev/xvda2. Initially when fstab had /dev/xvda2 I had a warning, so I changed fstab through yast to use the drives uuid. I've also tried zypper dup - but that gave all sorts of dependency errors. For kicks, I thought I might try 11.4 next. Am I out of luck and should just go with a fresh install?

I have two instances of OpenSuse 11.4 installed as guests under XenServer. The first one is running KDE and the second LXDE. I can connect via TightVnc to the KDE guest. When connecting to the LXDE guest the client window is black with an X cursor. Both systems have identical Xorg.conf files and identical xinet.d/vnc files. The logs show that xinetd is starting vnc on the LXDE guest. The LXDE process is running, and lxde.log doesn't contain any obvious problems.

I've created a guest user in the group "user." I'd like to limit its read access to its own home directory. However, by navigating through File system>home it's able to read my home directory. I was under the impression that users were limited to their own home directories. Am I missing something, or is there a group I can assign this guest to, to limit its read access to its own home directory? I've read about Pessulus (I use Gnome), but that seems to be geared toward limiting access to applications, not directories.
Ideally, I'd like to create a group that cannot navigate through any files except its own home directory. But it seems that if I try to do that, the guest user will not be able to execute any applications. I've read all the posts (and other forums) I could find about creating such a limited account, but the chroot jail is beyond my understanding. I get the feeling that it's geared toward networks.

I created an OpenSUSE 11.4 PV guest on XenServer 5.6, and about half the time, it fails to finish booting. it starts all the services, and fails immediately before it would display the login prompt. I've spent hours googling for this problem, and can't find any reference to it anywhere, meaning that I may be the first to experience it.
has anyone else done OpenSUSE 11.4 on XenServer 5.6 and had this problem? were you able to resolve it, and how?

I had recently installed the kernel sources so that I could compile the VirtualBox kernel module to use well but I had not restarted afterwards. I had been using my system problem free until tonight when I decided to restart. I had no internet connection and through ifconfig showing only lo and ifup eth0 returning "device eth0 is not accessible", I discovered I had a bigger problem than at first thought. Then I discovered that no PCI devices other than video were working, and so I referred to /var/log/messages and discoverd a line stating that "/lib/modules/2.6.37.6-0.5-desktop/modules.dep : no such file or directory.
All other entries in that directory were some version of 2.6.37.1-1.2.
Unfortunately I had to end up reinstalling because witho

Whenever I try to install an .rpm by double-clicking on it, a window comes up with this error:
'The name org.freedesktop.PackageKit was not provided by any .service files'
There is a file called org.freedesktop.PackageKit.service in /usr/share/dbus-1/system-services, so I know that it exists. Why can't dbus find it?

I have updated using zypper from 11.1 to 11.2. Does this process update the boot/menu.lst file with an entry for the new kernel? Didn't for me.
Any rate, that's not really the problem. I have created a new entry in menu.lst to load the new kernel but I don't have a ramdisk image - all I have is a broken link initrd -> initrd-2.6.31.5-0.1-default
Where do I get the image from?

I have tried to reinstall, but for some reason I can't get it to boot with DVD. So, is there a way that I can repair my computer without doing a reinstall?

I just recently upgraded from 11.3 to 11.4 (via zypper dup after adding the 11.4 repositories, no problems there besides the usual ATI HD2400XT video driver issues I _always_ have). I then installed VirtualBox. VirtualBox refused to start with the following error:
pk1048@img:~> VirtualBox
VirtualBox: Error -610 in supR3HardenedMainInitRuntime!
VirtualBox: dlopen("/usr/lib/virtualbox/VBoxRT.so",) failed: /usr/lib64/libcurl.so.4: undefined symbol: libssh2_knownhost_init
VirtualBox: Tip! It may help to reinstall VirtualBox.
pk1048@img:~>
and the advice to reinstall VirtualBox seems misplaced. The problem appears to be an incomparability between the installed libcurl and libssh2 as follows:
pk1048@img:~> ldd -r /usr/lib64/libcurl.so.4
linux-vdso.so.1 => (0x00007fff2c59d000)
libidn.so.11 => /usr/lib64/libidn.so.11 (0x00007fb03c2d9000)
libldap-2.4.so.2 => /usr/lib64/libldap-2.4.so.2 (0x00007fb03c092000)
librt.so.1 => /lib64/librt.so.1 (0x00007fb03be88000)
code....
And yast online update claims that both are up to date, in fact these appear to be the only versions of these packages in the 11.4 repositories.

When I attempt to refresh my zypper repositories, I get messages like:
Repository 'gwdg_suse11.1' is invalid.
File /var/tmp/TmpFile.vRNflE doesn't contain public key data
I've asked for help (which has been freely given) on these forums before, but nothing has worked, and I've been stuck with this error for many months now. In effect, my system is effectively non-upgradable.
However, I would like to upgrade to 11.2. Is there an upgrade CD, or should I just download the 11.2 DVD (at nearly 5GB) and choose the "upgrade" option from it?

I have a local file server running Samba on Fedora 9. It's already configured and serves a few people without any problems. I am now trying to set up a new read-only share with the username 'guest' and the password 'guest'. However, with no success so far! If I log on as 'guest' with the password 'guest' like so:
Code:
su - guest
No problem. Once logged in, if I try:
Code:
smbclient //samba/share
I'm prompted for a password. If I enter 'guest' I get:
Code:
session setup failed: NT_STATUS_LOGON_FAILURE
If I enter nothing (null) I get:
Code:
Anonymous login successful
Domain=[RIVER] OS=[Unix] Server=[Samba 3.2.8-0.26.fc9]
tree connect failed: NT_STATUS_LOGON_FAILURE

I had a lot of trouble installing Guest Additions within the Fedora 13 Guest on a Linux host. I had to mount the vboxGuestadditions.iso from the Device --> CD/DVD Devices menu. Then I located the appropriate package for my system. In my case it was the AMD64 Linux version.I ran this as administrator in Terminal. I used the "bash" command followed by the package name. This was after CDing the the appropriate directory. The packaged installed, I then rebooted and it worked fine. (Something that would make this easier is to load a script into nautilus that would allow me to open a locatation as administartor at the open window. I'm sure there is something in Fedora to do this but I couldn't find it in a hurry so I used the command line way).

I am trying to install CentOS guest on CentOS 5.3 host. I have installed all the requirements for the same. As per documentation, only NETWORK install is supported if the guest is to be installed as paravirtalized.I copied the CentOS DVD in /home directory with folder name centos52 and exported it through NFS. When I run Virtual machine manager and give installation path as: nfs:<ip address of host>:/home/centos52 , the system while trying to create the storage fails and throws following error:Unable to complete install: 'Invalid install location: Mounting location nfs://<ip address of host>:/home/centos52 failed'

Does anyone do this? From what I gather it needs to create the guest in /var/lib/libvirt/images/
The usb drive is formated and mounted when I run virtual machine manager and I can see the drive and access it but it is not part of the storage pool.
I want to set up a few of test OS guests on an external drive
If this isn't the way to go, is using Virtualbox or VMware a better answer?
