General :: YUM Broken - Won't Install Anything Or Update Without Crashing ?
Nov 18, 2010
I've been having issues with yum for a while now. It won't install anything or update without crashing. When I tried to do 'yum update' after doing 'yum clean all' I got the following error:
Quote:
Error:
It updates the first two "momonga" and "momonga/primary_db", but then it crashes with the error.
I am not sure if I should uninstall/reinstall yum, or fix the repo files individually. I don't even know where to start really since I'm so new at using Linux. I'm using Momonga(fedora core) Linux. I've been able to install programs through the GUI add/remove programs, but not yum. I really want to install Wine, but it doesn't show up in the GUI, so I need to install it manually via yum I guess.
Been trying to get itunes going in unbuntu 11.04. Tried gtkpod and it kept crashing when trying to update database. Looked into itunes thru wine. I think I could load it in wine but all my mp3's are on a linux box - ext4. From what I understand, wine will look to a windows partition for the mp3's. I know windows cannot read ext4. All I need itunes for is to load and delete songs on a shuffle ipod. Don't need itunes store, etc so I don't care if that part works or not. Before I go to the trouble of itunes on wine: Is this assumption correct?
Recently i add a lot of repositories for new apps but do0ing a zypper up after that left left many things broken ,first the my system has added 2 more entries in grub menu namely, opensuse 11.3 desktop-2.6.34.7 and opensuse 11.3 desktop-2.6.34.7-(failsafe) why are these added and now when I simply boot opensuse11.3 from menu though it starts but has no sound and typical errors shown . Firefox is broken. how could I reach a stable state now I have these repos only code...
A recent (last couple of days) update to Fedora12 involving libunicap seems to have completely trashed VLC video player -- as in causing it to be completely uninstalled. No biggie, I thought; when I went to reinstall it, I saw that VLC 1.0.5-1 fc12 was available. Tried to install it, and KPackageKit calmly proceeded to throw up, telling me:
Test Transaction Errors: file /usr/lib/libunicap.so.2 from install of unicap-0.9.5-3.fc12.i686 conflicts with file from package libunicap-0.9.8-1.fc12.i686 file /usr/lib/unicap2/cpi/libdcam.so from install of unicap-0.9.5-3.fc12.i686 conflicts with file from package libunicap-0.9.8-1.fc12.i686 file /usr/lib/unicap2/cpi/libv4l.so from install of unicap-0.9.5-3.fc12.i686 conflicts with file from package libunicap-0.9.8-1.fc12.i686 file /usr/lib/unicap2/cpi/libv4l2cpi.so from install of unicap-0.9.5-3.fc12.i686 conflicts with file from package libunicap-0.9.8-1.fc12.i686 file /usr/lib/unicap2/cpi/libvid21394.so from install of unicap-0.9.5-3.fc12.i686 conflicts with file from package libunicap-0.9.8-1.fc12.i686 file /usr/share/locale/fr/LC_MESSAGES/unicap.mo from install of unicap-0.9.5-3.fc12.i686 conflicts with file from package libunicap-0.9.8-1.fc12.i686
Wonderful. Now I don't have a video player that natively does mpg/avi; Dragon Player pretends to play them, but there's no video; same with Xine. BTW, I tried to report this via Bugzilla at Redhat, but couldn't find anything that resembled a way to report an actual bug/problem (what app doesn't work, how it doesn't work, any error messages).
I was doing a kernel update and can no longer boot into 11.3. I am dual booting with XP. I get Grub screen but no longer see Suse as a boot option, only Windows. I have tried to reinstall, but for some reason I can't get it to boot with DVD. So, is there a way that I can repair my computer without doing a reinstall?
I modified the file /etc/yum.repos.d/CentOS-Base.repo and when I tried to do a yum install on some packages, i ran into "error performing checksum" on all mirror sites. Then I fell upon a comment on this site that gave a suggestion to type this: "yum -y remove yum-fastestmirror" to correct it. not a good command to use apparently since it removed yum and yum-fastestmirror. I re-installed them both but since then there doesn't seem to be automatic software update notifications nor any actions to do so in "system tools" under applications. I can still probably do a yum update but it'd be nice to have the system notifications.
I started the upgrade to 10.4 from 9.10 through the update manager. It started the update to 10.4. After downloading almost 95% of the update, it gave an error message of "could not download certain components. downloaded files will not be erased" and stopped the update. I restarted the PC, and started the update manager again. But now it does not show any option of update to 10.4. how do I continue or resume the update process? I just started using ubuntu about 15 days back. So, I am relatively new to this.
im on mint 10 and when I run Update Manager i get this
Code:

Jaunty Jack - 9.04. Ran update manager last night and ubuntu-one client failed as part of the upgrade. At a loss as to figure out how to fix this. I have removed the ubuntuone-gnome-client and re-installed from the website but now luck.
i had just installed an update which had alot to do with firefox via Ubuntu update manager. Every time I browse the web and i want to go forward a page or back Firefox freezes every time. Ive tried restarting my comp with no luck.Has anyone had this yet and is there a way round it other that reinstalling.
I'm using Ubuntu 10.10. It's the only OS I have on my laptop. I hadn't updated it for over two months, and one day I started the update. I downloaded about 300 MB of updates and then started installing. While it was doing its job applying all the updates it had downloaded I had some 2 or 3 PDF files open, Amarok and a folder. Suddenly the computer crashed; mouse was dead, so was the keyboard. The computer stopped completely; I wasn't able to reboot it even with "sys rq + R + E + I + S + U + B", to give an idea. I had to kill the power to shut the PC down. But then, when I tried to turn it back on, it started booting up and then the following text showed up (shown in-between quotes):
I already tried to chroot into Ubuntu with the Ubuntu 10.10 Live CD, but when I mount the home partition and run "sudo chroot /media/Ubuntu", a message shows up that reads: "chroot: failed to run command `/bin/bash': Exec format error"
All I need is the log-on screen back on; a great deal of valuable information in the computer.
I am running Ubuntu 10.10. I wanted to install a Cinelerra video editor and followed instructions giver here: [URL]
Under the "read about installing"
But doing so, ubuntu software center does not launch and update manager gives the following error: An unresolvable problem occurred while initializing the package information.
report this bug against the 'update-manager' package and include the following error message:
'E:Type 'n' is not known on line 3 in source list /etc/apt/sources.list.d/gwibber-daily-ppa-maverick.list'
Can't seem to update without the Profiles wizard crashing. Will try again later this week to update the packages.I want to package most of the svn as I can.I would update the packages as much as I have time for. This wouldn't be for creating a distro from as it would have bugs. Also I'll be moving in a few months so there will be a month or more without updates.
After a recent update a week back or so, the nautilus is crashing very often.I have noticed it mostly happens while closing a nautilus window or maybe sometimes while trying rename a folder, etc.The kernel log says:Feb 11 12:25:58 PC kernel: [113047.344460] nautilus[31254]: segfault at 506 ip 00cba0d0 sp bfb895e0 4 in libgobject-.0.so.0.2600.0[c91000+40000]The nautilus is restarted after the crash. Tried searching the error msg on google but couldn't find anything
I ran an update last night just before I went to bed and shutdown my laptop. This morning, I turned on the computer and clicked on a link in an email. Firefox started but crashed almost immediatly. The same happened with Epiphany and Chrome. The only working browser I had left, was Opera.I started Firefox from the terminal, and saw this:
Code: $ firefox GLib-GIO-ERROR **: Settings schema 'apps.gecko-mediaplayer.preferences' is not installed
No time at the moment to quantify (can do later), but after months of reasonably stable audio work under kernel 26.32-24, I finally updated to 25 and jack apps are crashing left and right.
Initially installed 5.3 on a 64-bit platform and was able to compile just fine. Foolhardily updated to 5.5. Somewhere in that process I lost the ability to compile even the simplest "hello, world" C program.
$ gcc hello.c In file included from /usr/include/_G_config.h:44, from /usr/include/libio.h:32, from /usr/include/stdio.h:72, from hello.c:1:
I have an offline machine and the full 8 DVD repository set and have added them to the system and they work fine to install packages. I used jigdo to download the update 6.0.1 DVD and the "packages" file and the one inside of "packages.gz" are empty files. This prevents the disk from working at all. I'm not sure who to report this to.
Just got today's F12 updates, which included changing Firefox, Thunderbird & Lightning from Beta to full releases (FF=3.5.6; T'Bird=3.0; Lightning=1.0-0.16.20090916hg.fc12.x86_64). My remote calendars from Google come up fine but my local "home" calendar now gets the following errors:
Error: Error updating timezones: Error: mozIStorageStatement::step() returned an error DB Error no such column: recurrence_id_tz Error: [Exception... "Component returned failure code: 0x80004005 (NS_ERROR_FAILURE)
Shutdown hangs after recent update(s) and will not power off, requiring use of manual power switchHave tried the following ..1 # shutdown -P now .. in terminal .. same result2 Disabled selinux .. same result
A couple of weeks ago, I went to run a yum update, but got this message:
Loaded plugins:
I've been running yum with --skip-broken since, but I'd like to know what package I need to get to the service level that xulrunner and firefox need. I'm running Fedora 12.
This has been bothering me for a while. I thought if I waited a dependency would get fixed and the update would work, but it hasn't for a while now. I have included the error when trying to update gcc and the libraries. Skip broken skips everything so no dice there.
On my opensuse 11.2 pc, the Decmber 3rd KDE 4.5.4 update proceeded to install all updates except libkdecore4 (and maybe others). libkdecore4 now has a dependency on liblzma5 which is not available. The result is an all white desktop with boxes where the widgets should be.
I found this bug report: [url]
But I can't find liblzma5 in the repository that is listed in the 2nd posting.
I'm using KDE and after some update GStreamer seems to be broken. Firstly it was unable to play sound at all, and I've got around this by changing Phonon preferred engine to Xine. But Clementine is still unable to play with error message:
Clementine Error GStreamer could not create the element: volume. Please make sure that you have installed all necessary GStreamer plugins (e.g. OGG and MP3)
I've already read this and this topic, but none of the things, proposed to try, worked for me.
I want to fix this annoying thing with ppa keys broken. There was a script named launchpad-update that used to do that for you, but everything I find is for pre karmic. Is there any alternative to that script? Any way to do it manually? Some programs I installed are not getting updated and I'm having to add new ppas manually..
After doing a update in ubuntu 10.04 this is the message I get: E: /var/cache/apt/archives/libimobiledevice1_1.0.6-1ubuntu1~lucid1_i386.deb: trying to overwrite '/usr/share/hal/fdi/information/20thirdparty/31-apple-mobile-device.fdi', which is also in package libimobiledevice0 0
How can I recover from this? The problem is made worse because I can not install any software because of a broken package on the system use broken filter to locate it I don't have any clue
I'm just getting back into Linux after (quite) a few years away; from Fedora Core2/3. Trialling Ubuntu Natty with Unity and Linux Mint 11 running for 2 weeks.
So last night I clicked on the (Mint 11) Software Update Manager - a small shield appearing on the taskbar which listed about 30 pkgs to be updated. I've no idea what all these lib-xyq-012 files are but I thought, well the system is basically asking me to update my system, so why not?
A few minutes later it finished, and I went to my VPN connection but nothing happened. I rebooted and noticed some errors displayed during shutdown but I didn't catch them.
After reboot:
a) date time has disppeared from the taskbar
b) network connections icon disappeared from taskbar
c) no internet connection at all!
d) menu --> system --> network manager --> (nothing happens)??
If anyone has some idea what I could try? (install Natty might be a valid solution at this point). I searched the forums but couldn't see anyone else had this issue (is updating recommended updates from software update manager not a good idea?)
I don't have internet it's difficult to use the usual "google-and-resolve" approach, I have to keep booting back into WinXP.
Just did a recent update with Sid, and upon reboot, I noticed that the theming engine appears to be out of whack a little. I've provided a screen shot for some clarity. As you can see, some programs that open do not use the set GTK theme, but instead reverts back to default. I've also noticed that in appearances, I now get that message that says pixmap engine is required, even though I have it installed. The biggest update was to gnome 3.0.2. At the moment, it doesn't affect usability at all, and I'm hesitant to undo the updates, as things that didn't work before now works! Ahh Sid! Living life on the dangerous side I is! If anyone can provide some insight into this issue (a fix is not of high priority),
