When I start my computer sometimes I get an error that my floppy drive isn't working and the boot process is halted. So I disabled the floppy disk seek. But Once in a while (sometimes almost every time I start) the BIOS settings are reset and I have to disable floppy disk seek and reorder boot device list again. I have checked the battery and it's fine. What else can be the problem?
View 14 RepliesWhen I start the computer I receive the message that the drive that contains the /home partition has an error. If I press "F" the screen says that the drive is no ready, that I can wait, cancel or manually recovery. If I wait, in about 1 minute, the system starts normally. If I press "M" to repair manually, then I press fsck to repair the disk and apparently repairs the disk. But everytime I start (power on) the computer, Ubuntu always checks the disk and gives a dialog where I can: press F to attempt to fix the errors, I to ignore, S to skip mounting or M for manual recovery

Recently I created an Ubuntu 10.10 Persistence Pendrive. I tried to readjust the booting sequence in order to boot from my USB stick Ubuntu 10.10. It somehow failed. - actually I know what to do in a BIOS
My computer still only boots via the harddisk - it does not boot via the Ubuntu-Pendrive nor does it boot if I insert an Ubuntu 10.10 CD. Further I cannot access my BIOS.
Is there any possibility to reset my BIOS manually - I know that some Dell computers have such an option? Any other way to update to Ubuntu 10.10.
I have an Eee PC 701 4G, and some time ago I disabled its wireless NIC in the BIOS to save energy. Now I've come to need it working again, but I can't re-enable it, because it always goes back to being disabled after I boot the eeebuntu installed on the machine. If I just enable it in the BIOS, reboot and go into the BIOS setup again, it's still enabled, but if I let the OS load it'll get disabled. I'm really at a loss here, how do I find out what's wrong? Could it be Ubuntu that does this?
View 3 Replies View RelatedMy problem, GRUB loader appears when it normally did not and Ubuntu fails to boot. My story, I installed ubuntu on a HP Touchsmart laptop a month ago because I was having troubles with Windows and... well I just wanted to install ubuntu. All goes well until a week ago when my sound was permanently muted through a hardware switch and ubuntu was not detecting it. I tried hitting the button on my laptop but nothing worked. Soo... I tried resetting my BIOS in hopes that it would fix it. I set the bios to its defaults and booted. This is where it got weird. the GRUB loader appeared when it normally did not and upon booting, a black screen with flashing cursor would show up and then... nothing. I changed the bios settings back to what they were and still nothing.
I have removed the silent boot from the GRUB boot line and can see whats going on... a little, the last thing it shows is "Running /scripts/init-bottom ... done." annnd nothing else. When booting in recovery mode it stops after 30 or so seconds on...

I have tried booting into a live USB (as the laptop has no cd drive) and everything works fine.
how the BIOS would be related to GRUB/booting..
Is there some workaround by changing grub settings other than rewiring the hard disks or changing in bios..
1. my bios is getting reset (low battery)
2. my hard disks are sata and ide, so the ide one is loaded as hd1 by default, cudn't find any way to change that..
For like windows you can resore your os to a state of peace kind of. If you messed up your vital files you could go back in time and restore you computer to a selected time. I was wondering if you could do that for ubuntu

View 9 Replies View RelatedI'm successfully dual booting and running Windows XP and Fedora 11 (with EVERY recent update installed), everything works fine EXCEPT that I cannot get both System times to synchronize.. Evey time I run Fedora I find the system time is always an hour different to Windows. Evert time I correct the system time in Fedora it affects my BIOS time settings. If I then go into Windows I first have to go into the BIOS and correct the BIOS time setting by one hour before I get the correct time in Windows........ Nothing is wrong with my Windows side of things, I know this because if I don't log into Fedora then my system times stay correct, only when I correct the settings in Fedora (which are always an hour out) do I get my BIOS changed. Also in Fedora, although I live in the UK (London) Fedora ALWAYS DEFAULTS TO Guernsey, no matter how many times I correct this to LONDON, Fedora always defaults back to Guernsey.... Has anyone else experienced this as I'm sure it's a Bug in Fedora, surely it shouldn't alter my BIOS settings, should it ??

View 5 Replies View RelatedI want to be able to access an old pc at home from any computer but I don't want to leave the computer on all the time (I won't use it regularly and I don't believe in wasting energy just cause I can). I've heard that some bioses have wake-on-LAN but I have no other machine on the LAN that will be left on (apparently it's impossible to wake a computer from off the LAN???) so my solution is to buy a raspberry pi (perhaps there is something cheaper/better??) and leave that on that I can ssh to from anywhere and then wake my pc from there. Unfortunately my bios doesn't have a wake-on-lan function and so I'm hoping that I can update my bios to a version that has a wake-on-lan option (perhaps there is a better way?).

So I've started to try and find a new bios to update. I think I need one of these: [URL]
So I run a dual-boot win7/ubuntu system and out of nowhere I am now unable to boot into ubuntu. I get up to the screen where I select which OS to boot into, then I select ubuntu, get the wubldr messages and then my computer instantly resets back to the original load screen.
This comes paired with a bad boot into my windows partition so I feel like they may be related. I did a system repair and now windows works though. I'm defraging my harddrive now just to see if it works.
I want reliable way to print bios clock. Using Redhat 5.5.
"hwclock --show" command prints out bios time in local format. So if linux is configured UTC=false when "hwclock --show" is the same as bios clock, but if UTC=true "hwclock --show" still prints local time and I must adjust it according to my TZ - something like `hwclock --show`-2 (only example).
So method above depends on UTC setting. Is there an unambigous method to print bios time? (Only os interprets bios time as UTC or local - value of bios time is the same if time is not changed).
Dual boot system. Boot Linux Fedora 13 and the hardware clock is set to GMT. Boot Windows 7, time is wrong, as it expects the hardware clock to be set to the local time. reset the hardware clock each time I reboot in to the other O/S.

For example, system clock on my machine is now Wednesday May 26,2011 22:44. If I were to reboot now, the time I would get is Thursday May 27, 2011 04:14. How do I correct this?

View 5 Replies View RelatedMy Fedora 11 installation was a breeze but i have been experiencing crashes sometimes. the computer hangs and i have to do a hard reset.
Here is what /var/log/messages say before the crash:
I love docky but i have a really annoying problem.
Every time I login to my account, all my previously settings on Docky are gone. I move Docky to right, add some docklets and change some setings like Panel mode, etc.
But when I shutdown my computer, next time I login I see Docky in it's default setting again!
note: In the current session when I `killall docky` and `docky` again, it works fine and reload my previous settings. The problem happens on Logout/Login.
I run Ubuntu 10.04 on a Dell amd64 Laptop with 1.7x2 CPU and 2.3GB of RAM.
System time was drifting ahead increasingly for several days time in the end. This is what I did with the clock about 6 hours "in the future":

I'm using Ubuntu 9.10, and a usb webcam that is shown as 'Bus 001 Device 005: ID 0ac8:3450 Z-Star Microelectronics Corp.' by lsusb.
The problem is that on connecting the cam, it just works with the first program I start (skype, tokbox, messenger), and if I disconnect it or switch to another program, it stops to work and I have to restart my computer to make it work again.
Is there some good solution to reset the camera without rebooting to make it work again?
I have recently upgraded from Ubuntu 9.10 to 10.04.In 9.10 i could change the visual settings no problem and it would save. However now that i have upgraded i can change the visual settings but everytime i reload the computer the settings change back to none

First, started off that I couldn't turn off or reset my computer using the power buttons, it simply logs out.

Then I forced it to shut off with the command: sudo poweroff
When I turned it on again my icons like Trash bin, Netowrk meter, Keyboard layout have disappeared from my panels...
And it doesn't shut off anymore (it did for a couple times only).
I have Ubuntu 10.04.1 32bit installed on my flash drive so wherever I go I can have my own mini personal computer, but one problem I'm having is every computer it is run on the next time it's rebooted to the OS on the hard drive it has UTC time instead of the actual time for the timezone you're in that Windows uses. So is their a way I can make Ubuntu not automatically change the clock to what it wants?

I am trying to try the OS by USB at the start into The BIOS If ya gets what I mean. It successfully loads The Options menu where you pick a choice like run from usb. So I run from usb and and it Loads Ubuntu just the purple background and the beans underneath it loading forever.

I am using Windows 7 Build 7100* with a computer I built a year ago. Intel e8400,6gb Ram, Asus P5Q SE Pro,and 100gb left on hard drive (30 Excluding cause I partitioned it.
I installed Puppy Linux on a partition on an older 2000-era computer. The other partition had Windows ME, which crashed and burned recently. Lately, the computer has started to open GRUB very slowly. It is also slow to boot Puppy Linux from there. I reinstalled GRUB, to no avail. I decided that the problem was probably a slow BIOS, but I'm not sure. Does anyone know of another possible problem, or of a good boot-disk BIOS diagnostic tool? I tried using a couple of the tools on the Ultimate Boot Disk, but they all got hung up, displaying: - InitDisk as the last line in the sequence.

View 4 Replies View RelatedI'm trying to find how to schedule a process to start at a specific time (not on start up). How would I schedule a process/application to start at a specific time (if it matters, it will be a background process). For instance, have process abc start every weekday at 5am. I've done this for windows many times though have only been using linux regularly for a few months and haven't figured out the best way of doing this.
So far the best solution I have is to create a program that will start on boot and have it check the time and sleep until the required time and then start the required process(es) at the required time(s). But this seems more of a hack since I'd expect there to be a proper way of doing this.
I did a clean install of Ubuntu 11.04 64bit and the start up time is abnormally slow. If I start up the computer and don't press anything, the start up time is 30 minutes but it usually doesn't start up at all. It just boots into a purple screen, no splash, then it sits there and the computer doesn't have any loading lights flashing.
I had a similar problem with 10.10, but I assumed it would go away when I did a clean install of 11.04.
I can't get a read out of what's going wrong because when I press Esc it doesn't display anything, though weirdly it can sometimes get the start up process moving. I have also found that pressing enter really fast can sometimes help and something that seems completely oxymoronic, if I press the power button while it's starting up that can make it work, but nothing works every time.
I have CentOS 5 running on my machine "Appro 1122hi". Now i need to replace centOS with RHEL 4.
Steps Followed is, i changed the bios setting to start booting form CD.
when i try to boot form CD i get "PXE-E61 media test failure, check cable" error
Hardware details. AMD opteron processor 248, 64 bit machine and 16 GB ram.
