Nov 10, 2010I just did a new clean install of Ubuntu 10.10 on my PC. I noticed that the screensaver doesn't work at all. Is there a way to start/ reset the screensaver?

May 26, 2009I would like to start and stop rtorrent based on my screensaver. I used to do this awhile ago with ubuntu and still have my script. However now I am using Fedora with KDE and the script no longer seems to work.

Ubuntu :: Get The F-spot Screensaver Working Under KDE?
Feb 10, 2010I'm trying to get the f-spot screensaver working under KDE. I found the f-spot-screensaver executable in usr/lib/gnome-screensaver/gnome-screensaver/f-spot-screensaver, and the executable works just fine under KDE when run from the command line. I also found a .desktop file in /usr/share/applications/screensavers/f-spot-screensaver.desktop.
I also installed xscreensavers, and they all seem to work just fine, but I can't figure out how to make the f-spot version show up in control panel.
Ubuntu :: Electricsheep Screensaver Not Working?
Jan 17, 2011Just as the title says, the electricsheep screensaver (v2.7) is not working - not on gnome-screensaver at least.When running electricsheep from a terminal it does work, also the exact same version works fine as a screensaver under Lubuntu.I've tried some solutions provided in other threads on this forum, such as installing the PPA version and letting it run overnight, without success.

Mar 10, 2011I just installed Ubuntu 10.04.1 32-bit on a Dell Optiplex GX280 with Intel P4 3.4GHz, 1GB ram, 40GB hard drive, it's connected to a 17" CRT monitor which was detected automatically. Anyways, I set screensaver to come on after 15 minutes, monitor to shut off after 30 minutes and computer to go to sleep after an hour idle. The screensaver came on and monitor shut off as desired but the computer wouldn't go to sleep. So I manually put it to sleep (clicked "Suspend") and it went down and came back up just fine.I then did a few other things like installed java, flash, vlc player and I noticed that the screensaver won't even come on now. What is going on???Running:

May 19, 2010There's an OSS screensaver on windows that I love called PixelCity (links:blog post, github). it's pretty cool. and it runs fine on my Ubuntu (Karmic 9.10) with wine.Is there a way I can tell the gnome-screensaver about it so I can use it as one of my screensavers? I'm still fairly new to Gnome and the whole "screensavers as themes" thing is still confusing me.I've found my themesdir and tried to create a .desktop file for it, but obviously I've gotten something wrong as it just doesn't show when I open the screensaver prefs dialog, no error, no message, it's just not there.
Installing the xscreensaver packages added the extra screensavers I was missing, and I'm a pixelcity away from perfection..Of course the perfect solution would be if someone ported the screensaver natively to linux, which shouldn't be too hard as the source is open, it already runs on openGL and tries to confine most windows stuff to a single file. But I don't know C++ or 3D code or win/linux internals so I wouldn't know where to start..
Ubuntu Installation :: Reset Update Manager To Start Updating Properly?
Apr 17, 2010I am having problems with my newly upgraded 9.10 distribution that keeps locking up. I had started a thread on that but along the way, I noticed another problem with the Update manager. I posted the following text in the same thread but realized that I must start a newer thread since it has its own issues (so sorry if you see this text in my other thread).I had upgraded from 8.10 to 9.04 with ISO image and then to 9.10 with ISO image. In between, I did not reset anything in the Update manager (the upgrades were within one day of each other). Since the computer was connected to network during upgrades, I also let it fetch any newer packages as it needed them.
After the upgrade, I started having system lock ups and it requires hard boot. I tried to check for any updates using Update Manager. It reported that system was up-to-date. However, I noticed in the Settings that cdrom was selected in Sources (perhaps because I had upgraded with ISO image). I unselected the cdrom and tried to update the packages. Since I upgraded using ISO image, there is some problem here about recognizing the repository perhaps. Do you think my problem may have stemmed from upgrading twice using ISO images and not resetting the Update Manager in some fashion in between? Although the system did fetch upgraded packages during upgrades. How can I reset the update manager to start updating properly? Perhaps Authentication is an issue?Of course, I am still having trouble with lock up.

I mean it asked yesterday and then again today.Is there anyway to reset the key ring passwords and start from scratch.Apparently to many things use key ring so it can't be removed.

Sep 4, 2010When I start my computer sometimes I get an error that my floppy drive isn't working and the boot process is halted. So I disabled the floppy disk seek. But Once in a while (sometimes almost every time I start) the BIOS settings are reset and I have to disable floppy disk seek and reorder boot device list again. I have checked the battery and it's fine. What else can be the problem?

In order to make the website work again I have to run /etc/init.d/networking restart. The server is running a static IP address and is not resetting when the website goes down. Mar 31, 2010I had the "set-cap" exception problem, so when the fix was released, I updated. Since then, the ubuntuone-preferences dialog will not start or work. I tried the me bar, the system menu, and the CLI.Now, I bought some music the first day the store opened and it downloaded fine. Then yesterday I bought another album and the store hangs on "downloading the files." Six hours later, it still won't move.
It gets weirder. The music store says its trying to download a couple of tracks from the first album (even though they are already downloaded), the second album shows up as downloaded under the Web UI, but doesn't show up at all on my desktop .ubuntuone folder.I've tried the IRC a couple of times, with no response. (In fairness, it may have been bad timing, I'm in New York) I don't mind trying to sort this out myself, but I'd just like some more hints. I've looked at the syncd log and found the exception, but I don't know how else to restart the syncd. At the same time, my files *are* synching, and *one* of my address books is synching (my gmail account contacts aren't). I know this is alot at once, but I'm afraid of dividing the problem and missing something.

I'm using firefox and have tried installing adobe flash player through their website (nothing happens, download doesn't start) and through the terminal (error messages), I've also tried installing other flash players from the ubuntu software centre and, while they install fine, they don't seem to actually work. Oct 13, 2010This is kind of cross post from the 10.10 beta forum, but since that thread went by without a solution, forum (and thread) are locked and this problem still exists, I'll try again.
When I reboot my machine, it seems to go pretty quickly. However looking at the log it seems that most everything is running after about 8.6 seconds, and then USB starts loading up. The first log entry regarding USB comes at 32 seconds, second one at 62 seconds. The keyboard starts working at 84 seconds and the mouse at 166 seconds.
Note, this same system was running 9.10, 10.4 and various other distros I tested without such problems...
I've removed all hubs, everything is directly connected to the computer. code...
Ubuntu Networking :: Wireless Stopped Working [Maverick] / Where To Start?
Nov 15, 2010I'm using Maverick and since yesterday, my wireless hasn't been working. It was working before with Maverick and I don't recall doing any updates that might have changed wireless configurations.
By "doesn't work" I mean it doesn't recognizes any networks, as if the wireless was turned off (there's this button on laptops, but it's turned on). I had that problem some time ago, but rebooting solved the problem, which, now, didn't.
My laptop is a HP dv6420la.

Ubuntu Networking :: Network Adapter Stopped Working And Fails To Start
Feb 19, 2011I have somehow messed up my network (onboard) card in the process of configuring network settings. how I managed to do so is that I did not use ifdown before making changes to my "/etc/network/interfaces" file. Also I think it might be relevant to mention that the sshd was running -although with no active connections at that time- since I have the service installed on my 10.04 Ubuntu Server (x64). So step by step what I did to end up with no network connection:
1) sudo cp /etc/network/interfaces ~/myfiles/interfaces.original
2) chmod 444 interfaces.original
3) sudo nano /etc/network/interfaces and then applied my network settings (IP, netmask, etc.). The syntax and configuration of my "interfaces" file is without flaw since it was simple, typical and was assigning my up to then DHCP assigned IP of 192.168.2.3 to static.
At about that point and although "ifconfig" showed the changes had been applied as planned the network card stopped working. I could no longer ping anyone but myself and the leds both on my network adapter and on my switch were turned off. Since my configuration also has a Windows 7 installation I rebooted to Windows in hope of troubleshooting through device manager but I got an error code 10 which means that the adapter could not start. Did I fry my network adapter for good and for all or I still have a chance of repairing it?
PS: After a closer look I saw that the NIC's LEDs indicate that the device cannot start. I am considering to reboot my MB as a last resort since the NIC is an onboard device and changing BIOS settings has done nothing to restore it.

Mar 30, 2011I am currently running a VPS with Ubuntu Server 10.10. I have been trying for a few days now to get some programs to run when the system starts, but with no luck. I am trying to use rc.local to do this, there is an:
/etc/init.d/rc.local - http://paste.monsterprojects.org/mpbjhwhbjzhbjrr (Was already on the system, I have not edited this)
and:
/etc/rc.local - http://paste.monsterprojects.org/mpbjhwhbkkkhwez
If i run the /etc/rc.local script manually all the programs start fine, and if i run /etc/init.d/rc.local start, all the programs start fine. But for some reason they just don't seem to be starting when the system boots.

Aug 3, 2010I've just compiled and installed some software (coova-chilli). I usually control this as a service so immediately after install I tried service chilli start I got the following error:

If i run which chilli I get: /sbin/chilli I've tried 'updatedb' and a reboot but no luck. I remember a few months ago I was playing with chilli before and I this was happening. I had to run a simple command to update something or other and it fixed the issue. Of course, I can't remember what that command was.

Mar 5, 2011i got 2xgtx280 and 2 x xeon 5650 transparency and shadows work ok but i have little problem when windows mannager starts(fluxbox) when i click first on for exemple firefox windows its moving slow for 4 sec after that is ok and if i dont use that window for 2 min and i wanna use it again its slow again for couple seconds how can avoid this? i was trying alot xorg.cnf settings and xcompmgr and nothing changes...

May 3, 2010videos videos work great, but unfortunately, when i try to access videos on hulu.com, i receive this error message: "we're sorry but we're unable stream this video to your system. this may be due to an adobe software limitation on 64-bit linux systems."
this is strange because hulu videos were working after i installed lynx but mysteriously stopped working. i don't have the swfdec-mozilla package installed nor the mozilla-plugin-gnash nor the flashplugin-installer.
what do i need to do to start clean and install the necessary packages?
