General :: Difference Between System Uptime And Last Boot Time?

May 11, 2011

My Linux system was last rebooted few hours ago. But it seems little confusing for me to figure out the exact reason behind it. I guess following command should justify what i meant to say.

Code:
# date
Wed May 11 13:22:49 IST 2011
# last | grep "May 10"
reboot system boot 2.6.18-194.el5 Tue May 10 17:35 (19:46)
root pts/1 XXXX Tue May 10 17:24 - 18:18 (00:53)

[Code]...

My question is Why the uptime is saying that the system is up since last 47 min.It should be more than 1 day if i m not wrong.

Debian Multimedia :: How To Make Certain Windows Open Same Size Every Time

Jan 13, 2016

I have been using windowmaker for some time now. I really love this wm, but I've one major problem; how do I make certain windows open the same size each time I open that program? For instance, I have a certain size I prefer for Pcmanfm, Vlc, deadbeef, and geequie, but every time I run them, they open anywhere on the desktop at all sorts of sizes. I especially hate resizing a video window when the video is playing.

I can do this in fluxbox, but I have a different set of problems with that window manager, namely, I can't organize my dockapps the way I want, despite editing the slitlist and some won't work at all. While I love Openbox, I can't get the windows sized right each time, either.

Ubuntu :: Make An Image Of Windows Partition To Save Time And Effort When Wanting To Restore?

Aug 6, 2010

Am quite new to Ubuntu (10.04) and have recently reinstalled XP. I want to make an image of my windows partition to save time and effort when wanting to restore this. I read the Ubuntu documentation on Drive Imaging [URL]..community/DriveImaging and am wondering if I've done things ok?

I've booted using the Live CD. Windows is on sda1 and is a 50GB partition. I have a hidden ntfs partition on the same hard drive at sda9 of 10GB. The first time I tried this I got an error regarding my output file saying "Not a directory". I'm assuming that was because I hadn't mounted sda9. It also reported an error saying permission denied on sda1. I then mounted sda9

Code:
sudo mount /dev/sda9 /mnt

I then changed to root as I thought not being in that was why I was getting the permissions error.

Code:
sudo -s
I've then done the following;
Code:
dd if=/dev/sda1 bs=1024 | gzip > /mnt/sda1.bin.gz

The terminal window is just showing a flashing cursor in the bottom left corner under the above command line input. Is the fact that my mount partition being smaller than my windows partition going to cause a problem or will gzip solve that? My Windows install occupies about 7.5GB of the 50GB partion.

I'm not sure if dd is just taking a long time to complete the task???

General :: Track Spend Time On Computer?

Sep 4, 2010

Possible Duplicate: time tracking application on linux Every Linux time-tracking application I've seen assumes you're tracking time for projects, perhaps to create invoices later for your clients. This is not what I'm looking for. Rather, I just want some insight into how I spend my time on my computer. I'd like to waste less time on my computer, and spend my time on more productive tasks. The first step to improving anything is to measure it. But I can't be bothered or remember to click on some icon and switch "projects" every time I change from my terminal to browsing ....., or something like that. I want the time I spend on different applications tracked automatically.

General :: Proportion Of Down-time Versus Profitable Time

Oct 15, 2010

I admit this has been a particularly bad year for me, but it isn't THAT unusual by my standards. I typically spend I would reckon quite honestly about 70-80% of my time with computers just fixing stuff up that either I broke or was broke in the first place. Usually it's the latter by some considerable margin. That's really inefficient, isn't it? I just wondered what others' experiences are of this phenomenon. Obviously I don't do computers for a living or I would have starved years ago. So what is the Panel's consensus view on the percentage of wasted time we should expect to spend, on average, "running just to stand still" on maintenance tasks?

Programming :: Difference In Time Recorded By Clock_gettime() And TSC?

Jan 24, 2011

I want to measure the time it takes to execute a C function. The question is which is the best method to record time. After a lot of searching online, I found two ways [URL]:

a. using clock_gettime(CLOCK_MONOTONIC, &t)
b. using TSC

I call the C function 50 times (recording the time it takes for each call). The average is found only for the last 35 calls.

Using (a), I get:

48345 us
28350 us
28379 us
27716 us

[code]....

Average time for the last 35 loops: 121450.47 microseconds

Using (b), I get:

48130 cycles
28726 cycles
28820 cycles
27421 cycles

[code]....

Average for the last 35 loops: 27236.66 cycles What could be causing the strange value of 3322259 us in method (a)? I could just use method (b) but I would like to know what is going on here... Btw, I am using a desktop - with Linux debian 2.6.26 #1 SMP.

General :: Make App Detect When System Time Has Changed?

Jun 9, 2011

I need to write a small application which needs to detect if the system time is changed by an another application/user and perform some action as soon as it is detected (maybe log the data that time has changed, along with info about which application/user changed it).

How can this be achieved?

I have good programming experiences in shell script, c and beginner level in python.
I don't need to know when it was changed, just need to know who/what changed it.
The system uses NTP to sync the time, but it is also possible for anyone/any application to change the time(for eg: using the simple "date" command as well).

General :: Windows 7 - Stumped By Boot Time Corruption?

Dec 1, 2010

I have a home build computer that has data corruption problems at boot time. I have exhausted all the troubleshooting steps that I know to try. Do you have any additional troubleshooting techniques that I should try?

Symptoms: I run both linux(ubuntu, mint and fedora) and win7 on this machine.Sometimes I have just one installed.Other times both in a dual boot setup. The OS installs just fine. The system runs just fine for a while. Then it fails to boot.At first I can fix the boot problems with grub or bootrec (/RebuildBcd, /FixMbr or /FixBoot) as indicated by the error messages.Eventually the system fails to boot at all and I have to wipe the disk(s) and reinstall the operating system. The linux installs seem to last a bit longer. I typically have linux running for a month before the troubles start, but I have to repave and rebuild within 3 months. The windows installs last at most 2 weeks before troubles develop. The system is turned on for the day or evening then turned off overnight.Once the system has booted all checks that I have run pass. On windows fciv.exe, sfc.exe have never deteced and troubles. On linux tripwire shows everything unchanged. Chkdsk and fsck have never reported errors.

Hardware:ASUS M3A78-EM motherboard. 2x2GB kingston memory from the ASUS QVL for this motherboard.I have used two hard disks in this system.WD caviar black 640G (WDC WD6401AALS-00L3B2).Seagate barracuda 7200.7 (ST3120026A).On some rebuilds I have used just one of the drives, sometimes I have both installed. The DVD burner is a LG 4x (HL-DT-ST DVD-RAM GH22NS30 ).The power supply was originally an el-cheapo Allied unit that came with the case. That has since been replaced with a Seasonic X650.And that is all that is in this system. I use the onboard video, sound and network. I have never plugged an external device into the system (not even a USB flash drive!).

Trouble shooting so far...I have run the memtest utility from both the ubuntu CD and the windows DVD many times. Even when run for several day neither test utility has ever found a memory error.I have run the seagate and western digital provided test and diagnostic tools on both of the hard disks. I have done this on both the unstable ASUS M3A778-EM system and a very stable gateway system.I have swapped out the HDD cables several times.I have replaced the cables with new cables and with cables pulled from a stable system.Because the corruption happens only at boot time I suspected the power supply was having problems under the extra load of disk spinup. So, I replaced the power supply. No success.

I have run the system with every version of the MB BIOS from the version that it shipped with to the latest and greatest. The BIOS upgrades made no noticeable difference.I have enabled and disabled automatic updates on both win7 and ubuntu linux. That made no noticeable difference. That is it. That is all the troubleshooting ideas I have had.

I'm not sure how to and 2. it seems unnecessarily complicated for something that I only want to run once. If cron is the only/easiest solution, I guess I'll just have to resort to that, but I'd rather not.
