General :: USB Webcam Just Works Once And Next Time Have To Reboot - Reset The Camera Without Rebooting ?
Mar 5, 2010
I'm using Ubuntu 9.10, and a usb webcam that is shown as 'Bus 001 Device 005: ID 0ac8:3450 Z-Star Microelectronics Corp.' by lsusb.
The problem is that on connecting the cam, it just works with the first program I start (skype, tokbox, messenger), and if I disconnect it or switch to another program, it stops to work and I have to restart my computer to make it work again.
Is there some good solution to reset the camera without rebooting to make it work again?

Dual boot system. Boot Linux Fedora 13 and the hardware clock is set to GMT. Boot Windows 7, time is wrong, as it expects the hardware clock to be set to the local time. reset the hardware clock each time I reboot in to the other O/S.

I upgraded from fedora 14 to fedora 15 yesterday. I live in India (IST) which is GMT +05:30. Every time I boot, my system clock increases its time by 5 and a half hours. For example, system clock on my machine is now Wednesday May 26,2011 22:44. If I were to reboot now, the time I would get is Thursday May 27, 2011 04:14. How do I correct this?

I'm looking for a Linux-controllable camera or Linux-compatible webcam that can produce native resolution photos in the 8MP+ range.
The computer needs to be able to trigger the capture and download the resulting image.

Is there a commandline utility for rebooting the OS without rebooting the computer's hardware? In X, this would be similar to logging out and logging back in. I just need to be able to do it without a graphical display, keyboard, or mouse.

I have Ubuntu 10.10 installed for some time now and I don't boot my Win7 machine in weeks!I love how solid, robust it is... and also how good it looks.Love the features like Ubuntu One (use it a lot!) and the Software Center. I'm 95% converted and I would be 100% if it weren't for 2 issues:
1 - The machine won't shutdown. Rebooting works fine but shutdown it just hangs... Kinda sucks having to press the Power Off button every time...
2 - I'm on a laptop but it doesn't recognize my battery. All I get is a "electric ray" on the panel. Even if I remove AC power it still does the same... No charging information, nothing... I tried
Code:
sudo modprobe pmu_battery
on the terminal but is says that the module could not be found.
Everything else works terrific (better than Windows!) with this two exceptions...

I am a proud owner of the Kleinweich WebCam VX 1000.
I want to use my camera with Skype under OpenSuse 11.1. The camera is listed in the yast2 hardware configuration.
I tried to test the camera with luvcview.
I only get an error message:
SDL information:
A way to get this very popular webcam working on his linux PC? If not, which camera is the perfect "LINUX" webcam?

I was just wondering if there are any applications that would serve as a webcam manager in Ubuntu. I am running 64 bit Ubuntu 10.10 on a Dell XPS M1530. Under Windows, I was able to modify camera settings (resolution, image, special effects) from a dedicated panel any time the camera was on. I don't need a lot of flashy features, but it would be nice if I could lower the resolution so that Skype runs more smoothly.

I'm trying to use a Panasonic DVCPro HD camera as a webcam to stream live video from the camera to services like ustream.tv. Currently, the only way I can find to connect the camera to my computer puts the camera into a special pc connect mode (which does not allow recording) and makes the cameras p2 cards detected as drives. Obviously, this doesn't help me do live streaming (I don't even need to record on the camera).I've seen that on Mac OS X a program called camtwist can be used to do what I want, but it would be nice to find an ubuntu/linux solution.

I have two dual boot systems, each running Fedora 11 and a version of Windows. When I boot into Windows after running Fedora on either, the Windows time is wrong and I have to reset it. But, if I reboot from Windows into Windows, the Windows time is right . I think this results from different ways Fedora and Linux keepi track of time and what they do to the real time hardware clock.Could someone explain exactly what is going wrong and how I can resolve the problem?

My webcam works AWESOME when it works. However, occasionally it produces no video for Ubuntu based applications. Cheese, aMSN, Skype or anything else for Ubuntu Lucid.
I have tried power off & cold booting. Moving from one USB port to another, warm booting etc...
The only way to make it work instantly is to boot into Windows XP and access the Webcam. Then upon rebooting to Ubuntu the cam works perfectly again.
It's not a matter of Ubuntu finding and recognizing the cam. It always does and TRYS to activate the cam (the led comes on when loading any cam application) but it produces no video.
Is there a command I can use to force a RESET of the video device so I can stop loading Windows?

after the 5.6 update I started loosing the connection to my router. Having had issues with routers before I assumed that the router was on its way out. However I happended to have a laptop handy the other day and thought I would give it a try (after eth0 went down), router was fine(same cable too). I have tried bringing eth0 up/down (gui and ifdown/ifup) and restarted the network(gui and cli) but it will not get an ip(as I recall it does recognize that the cable is connected). If I do a reboot, eth0 comes up immediately. The log just shows repeated dhcp requests. I tried a dhclient -r but it errors out with no link found. It has been doing this since 5.6 came out (roughly once a day) so I THINK that it is not a hardware issue(should have died completely by now if it was). PSU voltages show stable and unchanged. It does use the forcedeath driver. 5.6-64bit fully updated.

I was wondering if any one came across that issue before. Everytime I reboot my PC something (I assume GNOME) reset my system clock to an hour behind what is was the last time. So if a reboot twice in a row that'll be two hours behind and so on. It used to work fine until I had to change my system time backward temporally to overcome and issue with GPG. Since I put it back I get that phenomena. It's like it's adjusting it for the Day light saving everytime a boot. Problem is Japan does not have any day light saving. I run OpenSuse 11.2 with Gnome 2.28.2 as my interface. I'm currently located in Japan GMT+9 not DST. /etc/localtime -> /usr/share/zoneinfo/Asia/Tokyo
I suspect a bug in Gnome or Yast. It's not user specific because the time is already altered even before I log it.

I am using a fresh Ubuntu 9.10 installation with english-only language but with a German keyboard.
So, once booted into my (only) account, I use the Keyboard Preferences app to change my Layout from US to German. Which works. I also remove the US keyboard so that the only layout left is German.
But upon a reboot, not only the US kbd is back in the layouts list, but the kbd also has defaulted back to US, so that I have to open the Kbd Prefs to again remove the US layout to get my German layout active again.
I also tried "Apply System-wide" and even logged in as root to make the same changes, but the system always goes back to US layout after a reboot.
This is also a problem when logging in after a reboot - I want the system to use German layout there, too.
So, how do I change the layout globally so that even at the login page I have my German layout already active?

A few hours ago I upgraded my system, from Karmic to Lucid and I'm glad with it.But I have a problem, (two actually, I posted the second in other thread), Gnome is not remembering my Visual Effects configuration. I mean, I select the "extra" option and when reboot, it's back to "none".It will be a pain having to edit this every time my laptop starts.

My screen resolution keeps reverting back to the default resolution 800x600. I'm using ubuntu 10.04, but had the same problem on 9.10 on my Acer Revo r3600 ION. I am able to change the resolution to 1280x1024 but have to do it by the nVidia configuration tool. The tool then allows me to 'Save to X Configuration'which it appears to have done successfully.See the sections from my 'etcx11xorg.conf' file. This is the state of the file after a reboot by the way.how I can get my desired resolution to persist after I reboot?
Section "Monitor"
# HorizSync source: edid, VertRefresh source: edid
Identifier "Monitor0"
VendorName "Unknown"
ModelName "Samsung SyncMaster"
HorizSync 30.0 - 81.0
VertRefresh 56.0 - 75.0
Option "DPMS"

Is this there anything I can do to get settings/changes I make to stay?

I'm using Ubuntu 9.10. Recently after an upgrade my Ubuntu started running in low graphics mode. After searching through forums, I could finally fix it.I'm not sure what exactly fixed it. I first changed the window manager to metacity. Run the following command:Code:sudo nvidia-xconfig --composite --render-accel --add-argb-glx-visualsAnd then changed window manager to compiz and desktop effects could be enabled. The problem is, everytime I reboot, its again running in low graphics mode, desktop effects cannot be enabled, and I have to do all the troubleshooting again! Any idea how to permanently fix this?EDIT: I found that the graphics is reset even without typing the command everytime. But I still have to switch back and forth from compiz window manager to set it all right!
