Software :: Any Way To Print BIOS Time Using RedHat 5.5
Jun 12, 2010
I want reliable way to print bios clock. Using Redhat 5.5.
"hwclock --show" command prints out bios time in local format. So if linux is configured UTC=false when "hwclock --show" is the same as bios clock, but if UTC=true "hwclock --show" still prints local time and I must adjust it according to my TZ - something like `hwclock --show`-2 (only example).
So method above depends on UTC setting. Is there an unambigous method to print bios time? (Only os interprets bios time as UTC or local - value of bios time is the same if time is not changed).

I'm successfully dual booting and running Windows XP and Fedora 11 (with EVERY recent update installed), everything works fine EXCEPT that I cannot get both System times to synchronize.. Evey time I run Fedora I find the system time is always an hour different to Windows. Evert time I correct the system time in Fedora it affects my BIOS time settings. If I then go into Windows I first have to go into the BIOS and correct the BIOS time setting by one hour before I get the correct time in Windows........ Nothing is wrong with my Windows side of things, I know this because if I don't log into Fedora then my system times stay correct, only when I correct the settings in Fedora (which are always an hour out) do I get my BIOS changed. Also in Fedora, although I live in the UK (London) Fedora ALWAYS DEFAULTS TO Guernsey, no matter how many times I correct this to LONDON, Fedora always defaults back to Guernsey.... Has anyone else experienced this as I'm sure it's a Bug in Fedora, surely it shouldn't alter my BIOS settings, should it ??

When I start my computer sometimes I get an error that my floppy drive isn't working and the boot process is halted. So I disabled the floppy disk seek. But Once in a while (sometimes almost every time I start) the BIOS settings are reset and I have to disable floppy disk seek and reorder boot device list again. I have checked the battery and it's fine. What else can be the problem?

System time was drifting ahead increasingly for several days time in the end. This is what I did with the clock about 6 hours "in the future":
Quote:
sntp -P no -r pool.ntp.org
hwclock --systohc
i.e. I got the (more or less) exact time from the time server and set the hardware / BIOS timer with this value.I renamed "/etc/adjtime" to beginn with a clean slate. During reboot (shut down phase) I noticed a message saying something like: "hwclock set to system time". I checked in the BIOS and there was a new time about one hour early(!). The boot phase then reset the time again, this time several hours forward (usually two to six hours). This is an iterating process, with a net gain of several hours per boot. It is not always whole hours -- like in a time zone error but it involves also minutes. System is set to UTC as affirmed by the "date" command. What could be the cause of this behaviour of the clock / timer?

I have Ubuntu 10.04.1 32bit installed on my flash drive so wherever I go I can have my own mini personal computer, but one problem I'm having is every computer it is run on the next time it's rebooted to the OS on the hard drive it has UTC time instead of the actual time for the timezone you're in that Windows uses. So is their a way I can make Ubuntu not automatically change the clock to what it wants?

I have a 2 node RH 5u4 64-bit. I have installed and configured the latest Veritas CFS (Cluster File System) which also uses Veritas Cluster Server. File system if VxFS. Storage is on EMC Symmetrix arrays with Veritas Mirroring between the arrays. We have noticed that running 'du -hs' on the shared directory/filesystem where it takes about 3 minutes on one node and 30 - 45 minutes on the other node.I've been running strace on 'du'.'du' runs an 'lstat' on each file (66,000+ files). On the slower node, the ave time spent in 'du' is about .001 seconds longer, which accounts for the 30-45 minutes. Also, the standard deviation is much larger, which means to me that the lstat times are all over the place!Another interesting thing is that iozone profiling shows that the i/o rates from both nodes are darn near identical, with no anomalies at various buffer & file sizes! And, iostat looks really good as does 'vxdmpadm iostat show

Let's say I am pinging a host, and want to output to a file each reply and its timestamp of when this started.
I know that it can be done with a loop and a shell script. Something like this
DO
echo "$(date)" >> results.txt ###includes the time and outputs results to txt###
ping -c 4 HOST >> results.txt ###a total of 4 pings at a rate of 1 per second###
REPEAT UNTIL USER PRESSES CTRL-C
Now, my first issue is that I need to be able to see results real-time as well.
Is there a way one can print to BOTH a screen and output? If one uses the ">>" command, it is essentially sending everything to the file. Running another ping command in parallel is not an option.

I've got two laptops running Ubuntu. Both have had Lucid installed from the live cd. I have upgraded one of them to Maverick. Both distributions are running great after they boot up, but I haven't experienced any faster boot times with either distibution. Both boot to Bios and then the screen goes black with a blinking cursor in upper left corner of the screen. The black screen remains for 30 to 45 seconds and then I get the Ubuntu splash screen for maybe 5 seconds, and then desktop. Why am I not seeing faster boot times? I realize 45 to 60 seconds is good compared to other os's, but I anticipated much faster boot times. Shut down on the other hand is quite fast at maybe 5 to 10 seconds. Does anyone else get this black screen on boot? Seems like wasted time cause I can't tell what's going on during the time there is a black screen. This is not a real big deal breaker, as I don't reboot very often, but I just wonder why bootup isn't faster.

I initially had a problem accessing the CUPS interface (see my other post) and got that resolved by adding the user "cupsys". Now, everything "looks" ok, and when I print a test page, it shows it as completed (in CUPS). However, the page never prints.
The printer is a Canon MP600 (using the canonmp600en.ppd file to configure it). Here's the output of my conf file.
Code:
# Show troubleshooting information in error_log.
LogLevel debug
[code]...

Interesting problem: For the first time with Xubuntu 10.10 64bit, I am finding certain applications print corrupt. A varying amount of letters / numbers either get substituted/print a blank space/ print a box etc etc. This corruption seems to happen from a Pdf ( evince ) or Spreadheet ( Gnumeric ) Opening the same Pdf on another machine (ubuntu 10.10 32bit) prints perfectly. Opening the same .xls file on the original computer but using OOo Calc prints perfectly.
I guess I have ruled out any problems with the printer itself or the network JetDirect box. I have re-installed CUPS and evince and upgraded to the latest version of HPLIP but the problem appears unchanged.

I cannot print pdf files. I have tried using okular and xpdf. The documents display in the program, but print preview shows a blank page. The printer then sends out blank pages. I have tried printing on 2 different printers using usb cables. Using terminal to process the commands shows error:

xxx@xxx:~$ xpdf
***** MediaBox = ll:0,0 ur:611.976,791.968
***** CropBox = ll:0,0 ur:611.976,791.968
***** Rotate = 0
Segmentation fault
Converting to .ps also is blank.

My wife has a canon MP470 printer and running ubuntu 10.10. I am able to print black and white, but unable to print photos. I got it to work using another driver, but not the 'correct' one for this printer. I have searched a bit and don't see anything about ubuntu 10.10, just older versions. Or should I just network her to my printer....?

I'm running Kubuntu 10.10 with a Laserjet 5M printer. When I attempt to print a job from Firefox or from Okular, the job never gets onto the print queue. However, I can print test pages on the printer and also print from OpenOffice, so this seems to be app-dependent. I know the jobs aren't being queued because the job number doesn't increase (as shown by the jobs for the test pages). Both Firefox and Ocular give every indication that the print job has been processed correctly.

Not sure when CUPS started acting up. I have the latest 13.1 current software installed. The first page to print is always OK, but all succeeding pages are overwritten. The second page shows the first page on top of it, and the third shows the preceding pages on top of it - and so on. Has anyone else seen this problem?I guess the printer buffer is not getting flushed correctly. If my configurations were trashed in some way, I don't know where to look for a fix.

How can I combine multiple single page prints into a single print job? For example, using Firefox on Linux one can print a web page such that each sheet of paper has four pages printed upon it. I would like to combine several separate web pages so that for example, web-page-a, web-page-b and web-page-c (each less than one print page long) are printed on a single sheet of paper.
I would like to do this without having to use some form of image editor to combine and manage manually created temporary files.

Our one remaining problem seems to be printing. She has an HP OfficeJet 6500 USB printer. We have the computer conntected. Strangely, when I boot from the CD the printer shows up as installed even though I did nothing to install it. After having submitted a print job it shows the printer status as "idle" and the print queue is empty. I tried deleting that printer and re-installing. The installation went as one would expect. However the results are the same. I'm beginning to think that somehow the problem is related to the fact that we are operating from the live CD. getting this thing to print from the live CD.

But the issue I am dealing with is that it will print a full page and then print a blank page..then a full page..then a blank page. Actually they aren't completely blank..it shows half of "2 of 6" or whatever page it is on. Like it cuts that in half and prints the 2nd half of "2 of 6" onto a separate new page.
