Ubuntu :: Reset BIOS Causing GRUB/boot Errors?

My problem, GRUB loader appears when it normally did not and Ubuntu fails to boot. My story, I installed ubuntu on a HP Touchsmart laptop a month ago because I was having troubles with Windows and... well I just wanted to install ubuntu. All goes well until a week ago when my sound was permanently muted through a hardware switch and ubuntu was not detecting it. I tried hitting the button on my laptop but nothing worked. Soo... I tried resetting my BIOS in hopes that it would fix it. I set the bios to its defaults and booted. This is where it got weird. the GRUB loader appeared when it normally did not and upon booting, a black screen with flashing cursor would show up and then... nothing. I changed the bios settings back to what they were and still nothing.
I have removed the silent boot from the GRUB boot line and can see whats going on... a little, the last thing it shows is "Running /scripts/init-bottom ... done." annnd nothing else. When booting in recovery mode it stops after 30 or so seconds on...

I have tried booting into a live USB (as the laptop has no cd drive) and everything works fine.

Is there some workaround by changing grub settings other than rewiring the hard disks or changing in bios..
1. my bios is getting reset (low battery)
2. my hard disks are sata and ide, so the ide one is loaded as hd1 by default, cudn't find any way to change that..

The first is I seem to have 3 GRUB installs. So whilst I update the one from my live session, the change does not appear in the boot up menu. I had installed 10.10 from a CD into a different partition (sda6), but that will not boot, so I have just deleted this and done another grub install and update. The kernel I am using has just been updated from 10.04 to 10.10 too, and it is this that I use and the Grub I have been working on (sda5).

I used to have Ubuntu 8.04 LTS on my old IBM Thinkpad R40e. I upgraded to 9.04 LTS and seem to have updated to the 10.04 LTS kernel - didn't know about that until now.
Recently I created an Ubuntu 10.10 Persistence Pendrive. I tried to readjust the booting sequence in order to boot from my USB stick Ubuntu 10.10. It somehow failed. - actually I know what to do in a BIOS
My computer still only boots via the harddisk - it does not boot via the Ubuntu-Pendrive nor does it boot if I insert an Ubuntu 10.10 CD. Further I cannot access my BIOS.
Is there any possibility to reset my BIOS manually - I know that some Dell computers have such an option? Any other way to update to Ubuntu 10.10.

Why would this iptables cause this mail delivery error? I think it's to do with dns lookups not being routed properly... if remove the last rule, mail works fine.
ssh is also very slow to connect when the last rule is enabled.

I have an Eee PC 701 4G, and some time ago I disabled its wireless NIC in the BIOS to save energy. Now I've come to need it working again, but I can't re-enable it, because it always goes back to being disabled after I boot the eeebuntu installed on the machine. If I just enable it in the BIOS, reboot and go into the BIOS setup again, it's still enabled, but if I let the OS load it'll get disabled. I'm really at a loss here, how do I find out what's wrong? Could it be Ubuntu that does this?

I have a dual boot system: windows xp and suse(10.2). I had to reinstall windows(again). When I tried to use the installer, it kept reseting my partitions to 500gb+ to linux. Nothing I tried would let me put it to the way it was(50gb to linux). Repair install failed. Update wouldn't work. MSwindows in the grub boot menu disappeared. I tried reinstalling suse. The installer blocked any attempt by me to put the partitions back to normal. How do reset the windows and linux partitions(850gb windows, 50gb to suse linux)?

When I start my computer sometimes I get an error that my floppy drive isn't working and the boot process is halted. So I disabled the floppy disk seek. But Once in a while (sometimes almost every time I start) the BIOS settings are reset and I have to disable floppy disk seek and reorder boot device list again. I have checked the battery and it's fine. What else can be the problem?

i'm trying to install 98se to a 110gb partition so i can dual boot with ubuntu 10 for 98 and 100 for ubuntu after the resize. when i tried making multiple partitions manually for ubutnu putting it on separate partitions i got grub boot errors. the problem i am having every time i try to install 98 it forces me to scandisk it then i have to hit space bar to fix every error i thinks it finds wich is impossible to press it 2 million times. now if I format in a non 98 format and tell it to format in lba it keeps asking for a boot disc, i burned one off but, still kept asking for it. if i do it in non lba, it only saw 2 gigs in 98 and when i went to install ubuntu it was a giant hard drive no partitions. i did try making 3 fat 32s 1 for 98 and then swap and linux partition but, the i got grub errors 17 and 18.
the problem is that bios a cap of 130gb for each drive or in this case partition. it's 320gb WD blue Scorpio. the short i want to dual boot 98se and ubuntu 9.04 with 2 fat32 partitions for storage 110 +100 + 80 = 320 also some visuals.

In 9.10 after kernel update there was always prompt window if i want to do changes in grub config file. In 10.04 there's no such question and every time i do update i have to edit my grub config file in order to get rid of older kernels and set windows as second position in boot menu. why does it happen and how to stop updates overwrite my grub config?

I'm dual booting Win7 & Ubuntu 10.04 on a Gateway NV78 series laptop, and while on the Windows side, the Gateway Update Manager asks to update my BIOS. If I allow it to do so, will it mess up Grub? For bonus points: how could I fix Grub if the BIOS updates does damage it?

So I have recently been making attempts at setting up my RTL8192SU chipset usb wifi. After struggling to set it up by following the steps on this link: [URL]../url?sa=t&jUyXQukrfIw After doing this I had no idea what it was supposed to look like but It did display several warnings along the lines of "warning: cast from pointer to integer of different size" I continued following steps as another error occurred "cp cannot stat autoconf.rtl8712_usb_linux.h" I then entered sudo modprobe 8712u and my screen went black i was forced shut down . Upon rebooting I found it also would lock up if my usb device was plugged in It will boot with it unplugged but as soon as it is plugged in again it will lock up my system and send it to a black screen.

I currently have a problem where when xubuntu is restarted using the power button, it will prompt the user with grub asking which selection to boot (xubuntu recovery or xubuntu) this feature itself is fine, but for some reason there is no timer, which means that unless you hit enter, it will always be stuck on the GRUB selection screen. I am wondering if there is any way to change this, is there anyway to enter a timer into the system so no matter what, after x seconds it will boot xubuntu?

After GRUB 2 comes up (I'm running Ubuntu 10.10) and I choose the OS to boot, there is about a 5 second delay where nothing appears to happen after I make the selection -- no disk activity. It happens consistently every time I boot. Again, this is after I choose the OS to boot, so it shouldn't have anything to do with the standard delay to allow me to choose the appropriate OS.Is there a good way to troubleshoot this and determine what is causing the delay?

I was installing Ubuntu 9.04 64bit server from the CD on a machine that I normally run ESXi on. I wanted to test disk speed on a direct install vs. the install in ESXi, so I installed a 4th hard disk, shutdown ESXi, and installed Ubuntu directly on the new disk (4th Bios disk - SCSI:3 or sdd). When I tried to boot from this disk, nothing happened. I rebooted from the ESXi install disk (SCSI:2 or sdc), all was fine. Playing around, I finally found that to boot the ubuntu install, i had to boot from SCSI:0 - Grub had installed there, even though I never indicated that disk for anything during the install. It would be much better if Grub ASKED where it should be install, rather than assuming.

I'm having some issues getting Ubuntu to boot. I've installed it a bunch of times before, but dual booting and not. Right now though, I'm having issues installing it along with Windows 7, on separate hard drives. Here's my current configuration:
60GB SSD with windows 7
500GB HDD, NTFS, windows 7 data
I bought a 1TB HDD that I want Ubuntu on, but I only want Ubuntu to use 100 GB. I want the other 900GB for Windows 7. So, I put in the Ubuntu CD, chose to edit the partitions manually in the 1TB HDD, created a 100GB ext4 primary partition for linux and a 2GB swap partition, leaving the other 900GB unallocated. Ubuntu seemed to install fine, said it succeeded, and asked me to reboot. When I did, however, my computer boots straight into Windows (no GRUB screen at all). I've tried changing the boot priority to all three of my installed drives from BIOS and tried putting GRUB on both my SSD and 1TB HDD.

I just bought a Fujitsu S760 with Win7 on it. I need it for testing purposes, but for everything else I use ubuntu. So I need a functioning copy of that Win 7. The problem is, they've spread it in 4 partitions all over the drive, and I don't know whether I can move any of that stuff around without blowing it up.
Here's the setup (all ntfs of course):

sda1 16GB (8 used) winOS files hidden partition...
sda2 200mb boot
sda3 150GB (12 used) winOS, program, and user files
sda4 150GB (3 used) some kind of recovery partition.
So, unless I move something, all 4 primary partitions are already used, and I can't even make an extended partition for my linuxOS. Plus, I like playing around trying to make hackintoshes, and that would take a primary partition too.And one more thing: on first boot, the Win7 talks to the mothership and completes its installation. So far, I've only used the machine with an ubuntu livecd (looks like everything works, btw), and I don't know how the drive will look once the Win7 is actually functional.Can I just dump that recovery partition? Unhide sda1, move boot there, ultimately make it bigger, and move the rest of the Win7 stuff there? Somehow, I doubt it.I know Windows checks for uuid (and MAC data??) to make sure it wasn't moved, so I haven't dared touch anything.

I have a relatively new server (Ubuntu Server 10.04.1) with a "/backup" partition on top of LVM on top of an MD raid 1.Everything generally works, except that it freezes during the fsck phase of bootup, with no errors. I've given it 20 minutes or so. If I press 's' to skip an unavailable mount (documented here), it reports that /backup could not be mounted.here are no LVM related messages in /var/log/messages, syslog, or dmesg.
When I try to mount /backup manually, it reports that the device (/dev/vg0/store) does not exist. Apparently the volume group was never activated, though all documentation seems to claim it should happen automatically at boot. When I run "vgchange vg0 -a y", it activates the volume group with no issue, and then I can mount /backup./etc/lvm/lvm.conf is unchanged from the defaults. I've seen posts mentioning the existence of a /etc/udev/rules.d/85-lvm2.rules , but no such file exists on my server, and I'm not sure how I would go about creating it manually, or forcing udev to create one.There are some open bugs describing similar problems, but surely it doesn't happen to everyone or there'd be many more[URL]

When I boot, I can grub into linux, but when I try to boot windows it doesn't work.
It shows a screen where it lists the commands:
However, if I change the harddrive boot order in bios I can easily get back into windows by selecting that harddrive for the first slot.
However, I don't want to do this everytime I want to switch operating systems.

I've got two laptops running Ubuntu. Both have had Lucid installed from the live cd. I have upgraded one of them to Maverick. Both distributions are running great after they boot up, but I haven't experienced any faster boot times with either distibution. Both boot to Bios and then the screen goes black with a blinking cursor in upper left corner of the screen. The black screen remains for 30 to 45 seconds and then I get the Ubuntu splash screen for maybe 5 seconds, and then desktop. Why am I not seeing faster boot times? I realize 45 to 60 seconds is good compared to other os's, but I anticipated much faster boot times. Shut down on the other hand is quite fast at maybe 5 to 10 seconds. Does anyone else get this black screen on boot? Seems like wasted time cause I can't tell what's going on during the time there is a black screen. This is not a real big deal breaker, as I don't reboot very often, but I just wonder why bootup isn't faster.

I'm lost before I can start using linux I have to install grub; grub is used to start linux, before you can install grub you must start linux ..... OK, I've borrowed a live-dvd from a friend (my burner is stuffed), its got Grub v 1.98; so thats what I'm stuck with (at least for now) Maybe I'm not stuck, but I'm finding the live cd too large and confusing, with filesystems I've never heard of and I cant work out what I can and cant do, given its a non-volatile media.
Anyway grub2 is good, as I think I can boot ISO images from an msdos or linux partition, without burning a cd; however, its bad, as to create grub.cfg I will need to build grub2 for whatever flavor of linux I finally choose (can you compile Grub for any kernel and use any library to do it?) What I am trying to do is a "frugal install" of a smaller distro, with boot, fat16, swap, & distro partitions, (the computer is p5mmx 200/64MB which runs 98SE and off97 fine, but seems to be minimal for linux). All the instructions to do this, tell you to copy the files across and modify your grub config (ie you already have it installed)
This is where I'm up to, I have created 2primary & 2 extended partitions. Put ext2 filesystems onto the first primary partition (for booting), and the 2nd extended (for linux) Run grub-install, so there is a directory grub at the root of the first partition. created a "linux" directory at the root of each of the ext2 partitions copied vmlinuz & initrd.gz to "linux" on the boot partition, copied the .sfs files to the other partition directory I don't know what to put in the grub file and what 'x' flages to reset to tie all this together.

I'm having the weirdest thing with F13. I HAD a HP 8430 with docking station and external 22" monitor. Worked well, using the RADEONHD drivers. Now I have a HP 8530p laptop. At startup, as soon as the login would show, the screen (both laptop lid and external display) go black. To resolve, I have to disconnect the DVI connector to be able to see the login screen. After initialization of the laptop display (showing login screen) I can connect the DVI connector again.
When I'm logged in and have the DVI connector connected again, I go to GNOME monitor preferences and see, besides my laptop display, my external display, not once but TWICE. if I enable the wrong one, my screen goes black again. If I enable the right one, my external display works as expected. I made sure that the monitor is connected only ONCE with DVI.
I'm using a freshly installed F13 with the default setup, so RADEONHD is being used. My laptop has the following video device (from lspci): 01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: ATI Technologies Inc Mobility Radeon HD 3650. The bad thing is I don't know where to go for analysis to get this fixed... any hints?

Well today I decided that I couldn't wait for the offical release of 10.04 LTS, so I upgraded from 9.10 to 10.04 LTS Beta 2. After realizing that many problems had come with that update, I decided to just format my Ubuntu partition and reinstall it. Somehow my GRUB stopped working from when I formatted Ubuntu, so I whipped out the old Toshiba recovery disk for Windows Vista 32bit. After many attempts to have the recovery portion of the disk fix all of my problems and seeing no results, I decided that reinstalling Ubuntu (and GRUB) might make everything all better. Well it didn't. Grub shows my Windows partition but fails to boot it. After selecting it, it goes to a blank screen and stops responding. And to add to all of my problems, my BIOS has changed slightly. It no longer shows/or responds to F2 or F12 when I tried to give another try at that Toshiba recovery disk. That kinda sucks since I can't choose what to boot. Please help me!! I really don't want to have to format my entire hard drive and try to install Windows Vista again (Not that Vista is anything anyone should love) I have many expensive programs that can only be activated a certain amount of times. I don't even think that I could reinstall Vista since my BIOS won't let me boot the CD/DVD drive.

I just upgraded from 9.04 to 9.10 (using Update Manager) in an attempt to get to 10.04. Installation and upgrade seemed to go OK until reboot. Now I only get a black screen - I don't see the grub menu, I don't even see any way to access the BIOS menu- not even a blinking cursor. I can hear it start and I can see the numlocks key go on. Ctrl-Alt-PrtScrn-B does not reboot (nor does Ctrl-Alt-Backspace- but I didn't expect that would) Surprisingly Ctrl-Alt-Del does (or at least it sounds like it does) reboot the system. I do have a NVIDIA cards and after reading around I suspect that this is likely the problem but I have no idea what to do now..
Here's what I've attempted:
I figured since I wanted to get to 10.04 anyway and this was so troublesome I could just go do a fresh install with a Live CD or USB to 10.04. However, even with a live CD or USB I still just get a blank screen.
Continually holding down F2 (and other function keys to try to access Bios)
Holding down Shift while booting
Esc while booting
Moving the monitor to the VGA port (as opposed to the NVIDIA card).
Other information...
Previously I had tried to upgrade to 9.10, but ran into problems with it not recognizing my RAID, so I just found it easier to go back to 9.04. (So although this is likely a graphics problem I guess the possibility is that now it doesn't even see my boot drive- although- if that was the case, I'd assume I wouldn't have the same problems from the CD or USB boot.) My ultimate goal is to get this to 10.04, if I could do it with an upgrade instead of a fresh install I'd prefer that, but at this point just getting back to a functioning computer would be ideal. I see many options in other posts for how to get back once you can access a command line- but since I can't even see that, I'm not sure what to do now.

I have Debian Jessie 8.0 amd-64 installed. It is a dual boot system with Widnows 8.1 alongside. Both the systems work fine with a few glitches coming at times on jessie. But I assume it should get stabilised with time.
Problem is:
The usb keyboard is no longer detected until the GRUB stage crosses.
* This implies I am unable to press F2 to enter into BIOS
* I am unable to chose Windows 8.1 by using arrow key on the keyboard.
When the default system (first in the grub list), in this case Debian is selected after time runs out then the keyboard comes back to life and works properly thereafter.
So far I have tried the possible solution given at [URL] .... but it did not work.

i am trying to change the boot order on the GRUB menu so that the countdown automatically starts on an older kernel. From what i can see all the solutions on the web want me to edit the /boot/grub/menu.lst file. The problem is that i don't have one. Someone also mentioned that if i don't have a menu.lst file then i should look for the grub.conf file. I don't have on of those either. The closest thing in /boot/grub is grub.cfg but that looks nothing like the descriptions i have heard of /boot/grub/menu.lst file

I installed Puppy Linux on a partition on an older 2000-era computer. The other partition had Windows ME, which crashed and burned recently. Lately, the computer has started to open GRUB very slowly. It is also slow to boot Puppy Linux from there. I reinstalled GRUB, to no avail. I decided that the problem was probably a slow BIOS, but I'm not sure. Does anyone know of another possible problem, or of a good boot-disk BIOS diagnostic tool? I tried using a couple of the tools on the Ultimate Boot Disk, but they all got hung up, displaying: - InitDisk as the last line in the sequence.
