General :: Yum Update For The Whole System First, Then Reinstall The Packages Right?

Jan 13, 2010

In my company's production server, there are already mysql, php and httpd packages installed and running. Configurations are already made to the httpd.conf and my.cnf files.

Now I have to upgrade the packages to the latest version. I have to perform a yum update for the whole system first, then reinstall the packages right?

Will this affect the changes made to the configuration files? If yes, how do I upgrade so that the changes are not affected?

General :: Reinstall Ubuntu On A Dual Boot System ?

Feb 22, 2011

On my Ubuntu 10.04.1, the ethernet doesn't work for my dual boot (Windows Vista) machine. I can run Ubuntu 10.04.2 from a USB flash drive & would like to install it over the non working 10.04.1.

My Ubuntu is on my dev/sda6 partition (I think the swap is on sda7) but when I try to install on that partition I get a question about the root.

How do I install Ubuntu on that partition without messing up my Vista. (I did it wrong on my netbook & had to rebuild the whole computer). I think I can delete partitions, expand vista to take all the free space & then reinstall Ubuntu "side by side" but that seems like the hard way.

I don't know how to select the correct options to reinstall Ubuntu without changing the partitions.

Fedora :: Reinstall All Installed Packages?

Nov 16, 2009

Running F11 x86_64 on recently rebuilt desktop with new processor/motherboard

I tried to build mplayer from source, and something got messed up. When I realized I had done something wrong, I did a "make remove", and then tried to reinstall mplayer from rpmfusion using yum.

(There is a bug in mencoder that was fixed in the latest source tree - a documented bug that has to do with subtitles. I don't think I can patch a library with a diff line of code, so thought the best answer to get the update would be to install mplayer by source. I love using Fedora, and would like to make that next step in learning linux by building a few custom packages. Apparently, I don't have all the skills yet!)

That being said, my system is still not quite right. I figure the easy answer is to wait until tomorrow, upgrade to F12, and all should be well. But... I will probably compile something else and mess something else up - that's just how I roll...

I can get a list (sort of) of install packages with "yum list installed". Is there a way to strip off all of the extra information, then pipe this to yum reinstall? I may resort to doing this by hand, but there has to be an easier way!

Lost my guru, ran out of HD space, erased too much, need to reinstall. Downloaded ISO, burned disk, tested disc, tried to install, but it fails to recognize old partitions in the prepare space part. Hardware is a 4-system(partition) SSD in RAID 0, with all the bootable systems, and a 4-partition HD in RAID 0 (one disk failing) for data only. How to I get it to recognize a particular partition on the SSD RAID 0 to install over? AND can it reinstall the system software and leave the other stuff as it was installed over 2 years?

Debian Configuration :: Aptitude Wants To Reinstall Uninstalled Packages

Nov 6, 2015

I use Jessie, with the Aptitude curses interface for package management. It seems that every time I successfully uninstall/purge a package (along with its dependencies), then the next time I try to install/uninstall anything else it wants to reinstall that package (and its dependencies). It takes several (I haven't counted) "don't install" instructions from me before it will forget about it.

OpenSUSE Install :: Don't Have To Completely Reinstall And Set Up All Packages And Stuff Again?

Sep 3, 2010

I've installed open suse with no problems however I accidentally put my root folder on an external HD. I want to have my root on a partition of my main drive so I can continue to dual boot windows. Is there a way to move root so I don't have to completely reinstall and set up all my packages and stuff again.I assume to do this I need to use the installation disk again and fix it before boot up but should I partition my main drive first. I'm being intentionally cautious as there is data I'd rather not lose on there.

Ubuntu Installation :: Tar.gz And Tar.bz2 Files - Unable To Access The Internet To Reinstall The Packages

Aug 10, 2010

I accidentally removed my network manager (gnome) from my system (via synaptic) and hence have not been able to have access to the internet to reinstall the packages. I have experimented with many commands (with help from others) in terminal with little success.

What I now did was downloaded a 'NetworkManager-0.8.0.999.tar.gz' file and a 'NetworkManager-0.8.1.tar.bz2' file (from a different comp) and have placed them onto my desktop. I have read the INSTALL instructions within and it is a tad complex for me as I am new to Linux. I understand I have to extract the files and compile them into a new folder (I think I would choose a file in the /home directory)- how would I go about doing this? Following this, I need to './configure' or 'make' or 'make install' the files

Ubuntu :: Apt/dpkg: Segregate User Application Packages From System Packages?

Dec 2, 2010

Is there a way using dpkg or apt-get to segregate user application packages from system packages? What I envision is an /apps directory structure that can be the install target for selected packages so not to "clutter" the storage areas for the system administration files/packages - maybe even with permissions set so that (a GROUP of) users could install packages on an Ubuntu server w/o SysAdmin guidance. This could also allow 1)system upgrades with or w/o including these packages, and 2)the sharing of /apps (via NFS) among common Ubuntu systems. Is this doable using the dpkg or apt maintenance tools?

Ubuntu Servers :: Every Time Logged In Via SSH Got A Message Telling There Where Packages To Update Including A Security Update?

Feb 11, 2011

I was running 10.04 LTS and had decided to stick to the LTS versions as I'm now running my machine as a server and don't want to be updating regularly.Every time I logged in via SSH I got a message telling me there where packages to update including a security update. So I did a search to find out how to perform an update on Ubuntu server from the command line. What I found was to do this:sudo apt-get updatesudo apt-get dist-upgradeAfter doing that I rebooted but now my machine gives me this message:

init: ureadahead-other main process (794) terminated with status 4Your disk drives are being checked for errors, this may take some timePress C to cancel all checks currently inprogressI'm not pressing C yet and leaving it alone to finish, but I noticed when the machine booted that one of the options for booting talked about Ubuntu 10.10, so I'm worried that I've updated from 10.04 LTS to 10.10 by accident?

I installed the minimal-command line system from the kubuntu CD on my laptop, which is guess is roughly around 200mb after installation. I wish to install a Desktop Environment preferably KDE and I wanted to know how and where do I begin from? Do I need to have a working XORG prior to installation of KDE and do I also need to install Window mangers and e.t.c? What all packages/libraries and components do I need to install first? I'm really not sure where should I begin from.

Initially what I am trying to do is to have working GUI system, then later on I can install rest of the packages and software that I need, like office, GPU drivers, browser etc. Secondly, for a minimal KDE system, what metapackages are to be installed from this site? I believe kdebase, kdebase-runtime, kdebase-workspace are required. [URL]

Fedora :: Unable To Update/reinstall Kmod-wl 13

Sep 14, 2010

Every time I attempted to run "yum update" dependencies failed to resolve citing kernel version problems. I cleaned out a bunch of old versions of kmod-wl that were still on my system (some dating back to my old f12 install) and still had no luck. Finally I removed kmod-wl altogether so that I could update the rest of my system and hoped I could just re-install it once the update was finished. No dice. "yum install kmod-wl" still produces this message (identical to what "yum update" gave when the old kmod-wl was installed):

Debian Configuration :: Squid3 Not Working After Update Or Reinstall

Aug 3, 2010

I run a Squid 3 server that is acting as a web filter. It worked fine on Etch. The system stopped working properly due to two of the three SATA cables being bad. Before I figured that out, I tried doing updates. Since Etch updates were no longer available, I did a distupgrade to Lenny. Immediately, Squid stopped working properly. It would take up to two and a half minutes for it to respond to a web request and add it to the access.log. This was using the same configuration file that it was using before the update.

After I found the hardware problem, I did a clean install of Lenny. I used the basic squid.conf like I did on the previous system, only changing it to add my ACLs and because it wasn't saving an access.log to the default location unless I uncommented the path directive. Now, it won't respond to a request at all. Forwarding is enabled and the firewall seems to be set up correctly.
