Fedora Installation :: Update Media's Repo Information To Reflect Some Of Updated Packages

May 13, 2011

I am creating custom install media using the Fedora Core 14 DVD as a base and I have gathered all of the packages and their dependencies I require using the yumdownloader command.I made sure to download the @core group along with the ones listed above. The problem I'm running into is that I don't know how to update the media's repo information to reflect some of the updated packages I have downloaded. So when I go to install on the device, it's saying it can't read/open a certain package and you can see that it's looking for an older version because I'm guessing its repo is telling anaconda that this is the specific version to look for. I'm looking for a way to "update" the repo found on the installation media.

May 30, 2010

I have tried numerous times to install ubuntu 10.04 through a CD and it always fails to boot. I get a message similar to this one: "BusyBox v1.10.2 (Ubuntu 1:1.10.2-2ubuntu7) built-in shell (ash)
Enter 'help' for a list of built-in commands.

I have ubuntu 9.10 installed at the moment, and when I update it to 10.04, through update, I still get the same message.

If I were installing from a cd like I was, I could MD5 test the ISO I downloaded and check the CD for defects, but what about when all I'm doing is updating from the update manager?

Red Hat :: RHEL5 Kickstart Config @ Everything (all Packages) Equivalent?

Jan 31, 2010

I am looking into Kickstart installations for Red hat 5. Previously I used RHELWS4 and I would use the "all packages" flag to get around having to specify all the packages.

For example:
%packages
@ everything
kernel-devel
kernel-largesmp-devel
e2fsprogs
kernel
kernel-largesmp

Would get me everything on the RHELWS4 DVD. From what I can see this option is not present in RHEL5. Can someone please provide some advice on a way to automatically parse the RHEL5 DVD and generate a list of packages so that I can ensure all the packages are present in the installation? I imagine I would need to do this for each update of RHEL5 since the package list will evolve over time.

Fedora :: Old Fc12 Packages Still On Updated Machine?

So, the question is do I need to remove all the F12 packages or should I wait until there is another conflict? Secondly, if I should remove them, is it a search and destroy mission or can I simply nuke them all in one grouping?

Apart of some objectives I have regarding slackware's philosophy, I have this question please. I have about 8 packages installed via sbopkg. my question.

1)Is there a way to keep these packages updated via a program? (If not I guess I am obliged to check manually for each of them.) 2) Also, sometimes when we build a package via sbopkg it is necessary to build other packages. Is there an option to install via sbopkg and the package and its dependencies required through just one command?

Ubuntu Installation :: Packages Marked As Updated Actually Not Installed

May 8, 2011

I did a clean install of 11.04 this morning. Upon logging in, Update Manager appeared, telling me there were 67 packages to upgrade. I obliged, and the update progress window appeared, as usual. At this point I realized it was not a convenient time to install the updates. No progress had yet been made; Update Manager had not downloaded anything, the progress bar had not moved, and the status was "waiting". I canceled the update and closed Update manager. However, upon running it again, it thinks that it successfully installed all the packages. In the "Ubuntu Software Center" Update history, it shows all those packages as having been updated with a timestamp of when I canceled the update. Apt-get and aptitude will not update the packages either. It seems like the packages have been marked as updated even though no update was installed. How can I rectify this problem and get the package managers to actually install the updates?

Ubuntu Installation :: Fetching From Update Servers Fail When When Using Update Managers?

Aug 21, 2010

I have Ubuntu Karmic 64-bit installed. Update manager tells me there are updates available, but when i try to install them, downloading the updates fail and throws this error:

Code:

Failed to fetch http://security.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/pool/main/e/eglibc/libc6-i386_2.10.1-0ubuntu16_amd64.deb

Consequently, a similar error occurs when I try installing Sun Java 6 Runtime.

Code:

Failed to fetch http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/pool/multiverse/s/sun-java6/sun-java6-jre_6-15-1_all.deb Connection failed [IP: 91.189.88.31 80]

Ubuntu Restricted Extras stalls when it's time to download the Java package I tried synaptic, update manager, aptitude, apt-get, and they all throw similar errors. Then I also tried connecting to different servers, to no avail. So to check if it's my connection to the net that has problems somehow, I tried downloading the file directly through my web browser, and it works. (But it's not recommended, and it won't let me!, install the updates manually, right?) I tried searching for the errors on the net and in the forums, and they're all somehow related to proxy servers. I then checked if I'm using some inappropriate proxy settings, and everywhere it's all set up to connect to the net directly, which is, well, my setup.

Take note though, that I am able to install other softwares normally, i.e, using synaptic, apt-get etc. The ones I tried include Pidgin and Mplayer. It's just these updates and Java:

Code:

jeanne@jeanne-desktop:~$ sudo sudo aptitude upgrade
W: The "upgrade" command is deprecated; use "safe-upgrade" instead.
Reading package lists... Done

Fedora :: Missing Python Packages Or Dependencies With F10->F12 Upgrade Breaks Yum?

Dec 15, 2009

I just finished upgrading the last of 3 machines from F10 to F12 using preupgrade (all i686). Except for a non-critical hplip issue, all went well with the first two machines upgraded 1 week and 3 days ago, but some python F10->F12 updates were missing on the third machine that I upgraded yesterday, leaving yum inoperable. Thanks to good yum error messages, I was able to resolve the problem (I think), but I thought I should post to check if mine is a unique or common problem, to enquire if it may have resulted from some of the python packages being in "update transit" in the repositories, and/or whether something like this can be avoided in future? Details follow:

Upgrade appeared to go well except for some dejavu font dependency issues (experienced on all three machines) and libcrypto.so.7 missing for eet-1.2.2-4... (third machine). However, there was a boot message that some python module (can't remember which) was not present for some nvidia requirement, although video driver worked fine. When testing yum: First it complained that libpython2.6.so.1.0 was not present. Since that module conflicted (identified by rpm) with various python 2.5.*f10 packages that that were still on board, I copied libpython2.6.so.1.0 (from a current f12 rpm) into /usr/lib manually. Second, yum complained that urlgrabber was not available, so rpm with the latest python-urlgrabber for f12 solved that.

Third, yum complained that pycurl was not available, so rpm with the latest python-pycurl solved that. Yum now works! and boot message is gone! I ran "yum install python-libs" to make sure that any necessary dependencies were met following my manual installation of libpython2.6.so.1.0, which resulted in a bunch of python dependencies being upgraded as a result.
