View 3 RepliesSo I was messing around trying to uninstall Nibbles and reinstall since I have an issue starting that game and something happened and removed the submenu under Games called "Logic", which had another whole list of games.
Is it possible to reinstall the games package or reinstall the update?I'm thinking more of the lines of a system restore or something so back 2 days from today.
found a deal-breaker bug for me in KDE 4.6 (kontact no longer syncs with google-resource). So I'm trying to revert to kde 4.5. I did a fresh install of 10.10 on a USB drive, then upgraded to 4.6 (to see if the problem was with KDE or my original install got buggered). Then I tried to downgrade using ppa-purge. Now I can't boot into KDE at all. I get the KDM login, and can boot into gnome from there, but when I boot into KDE it starts to load and then kicks me back to the login screen. I tried purging every KDE package on the system, deleting my .kde directory and reinstalling, but same problem. No error messages that I can find in the logs. So I need to figure out how to totally remove KDE and reinstall (best). If I do this on my main drive, I'd like to keep my settings as well. Alternatively, what would be the best way to do a fresh 10.10 install? Should I just backup my /home directory, and start from scratch on the main drive (currently only 1 main+swap partition on the drive)?

View 3 Replies View RelatedSo I've finally given up on saving my kubuntu install that wont boot. I've searched, and looked, but couldn't find a thing.My delema now is to make sure that I:
a) get all of the user data safely packed up onto my external USB drive. I believe it's all in the home directory. I'm not sure about getting hidden files though...
b) get the new install to go smoothly, and not mess up grub or the parralell XP install on the same hard drive.
c) get the user data back on the computer and recreate the user structure. Permissions were messed up already, so setting those up again is not an issue.
So, I've been poking around, and this is how I think things should go:
a) tar cvpjf backup.tar.bz2 /home to get my home directory backed up. Not exactly sure how to get from here to my external hd, but I'm sure I can figure it out
b) just run a live cd of kubuntu, delete the old partitions, and reinstall over them?
c) unzip the tar into by /home directory.
That's all I've been able to find so far. How do I set up the users? Will they show up as soon as I untar? Will the resinstall play nice with my windows install? Will I get all the hidden files too? Is there anything I'm missing?
seems that i have to reinstall my ati card driver after every update. i forgot reinstall it yesterday , now i can't get into unbuntu. the screen is black with white lines. how can i go into safe mode? i want to reinstall ati driver . cause i only install ubuntu in my computer, it has no boot menu, and i 've try ESC key, but it was useless.

Since then, Firefox starts and runs fine the first time. Close it down and later try to restart, error says that Firefox is already using that profile and will need to quit it before proceeding.
System Monitor then shows that firefox and firefox-bin are still loaded (although nothing in the gnome app tray at bottom of screen). Jill those 2 processes and Firefox loads normally.
Should I wait this out and see if later updates cure this? Reinstall Firefox? Submit a report to launchpad?
You may tell from my question that I haven't got much Linux experience, but I'm currently having a problem where OpenOffice.org won't save anything, and I'm trying to update it. I've downloaded the latest 64 bit debian installer, and when I unpack it, there's a shell script file called "update" which is set to executable. If I click on that file nothing happens (WINE seems to have associated itself with shell scripts, and nothing happens when I try and open them through Dolphin) and if I paste its name into the terminal it says dpkg: requested operation requires superuser privilege.If I type su and then type my password it says "su: Authentication failure". I only entered one password during the kubuntu installation process and that was the password for my user login, so that is the password I'm trying to use with su.

I cleaned out a bunch of old versions of kmod-wl that were still on my system (some dating back to my old f12 install) and still had no luck. Finally I removed kmod-wl altogether so that I could update the rest of my system and hoped I could just re-install it once the update was finished. No dice. "yum install kmod-wl" still produces this message (identical to what "yum update" gave when the old kmod-wl was installed):

In my company's production server, there are already mysql, php and httpd packages installed and running. Configurations are already made to the httpd.conf and my.cnf files.
Now I have to upgrade the packages to the latest version. I have to perform a yum update for the whole system first, then reinstall the packages right?
Will this affect the changes made to the configuration files? If yes, how do I upgrade so that the changes are not affected?
After a recient update to the freenx libraries KDE on Kubuntu 10.04 stopped working but other desktops like gnome kept running. The problem wasn't in the normal log files, but it was found in the .xsession-errors file in the user directory on the server. After the update NX is trying to start kde with the /usr/bin/startkde4 command which doesn't exist. Instead make a link from /usr/bin/startkde to the non existent /usr/bin/startkde4 and it will work again. To do this use the command:

I run a Squid 3 server that is acting as a web filter. It worked fine on Etch. The system stopped working properly due to two of the three SATA cables being bad. Before I figured that out, I tried doing updates. Since Etch updates were no longer available, I did a distupgrade to Lenny. Immediately, Squid stopped working properly. It would take up to two and a half minutes for it to respond to a web request and add it to the access.log. This was using the same configuration file that it was using before the update.
After I found the hardware problem, I did a clean install of Lenny. I used the basic squid.conf like I did on the previous system, only changing it to add my ACLs and because it wasn't saving an access.log to the default location unless I uncommented the path directive. Now, it won't respond to a request at all. Forwarding is enabled and the firewall seems to be set up correctly.

Tri-booting. They were installed in the order I listed above. I ran into a few bugs with Kubuntu, so I no longer want to use it. I want to use GParted on a LiveCD to format Kubuntu and expand my Ubuntu home partition to sit on top of Kubuntu's space right now. If I nuke Kubuntu, will Grub still exist with my Ubuntu/XP entries to boot?
I installed Kubuntu 10.10 on my netbook because i tried the new unity and i didnt like it. So everything was fine with Kubuntu but suddenly a few minutes ago i did an update which messed up my wireless, i cant connect now, somethings in the taskbar are mess up like the volume icon is different. When KDE loads at the biggining i get an error saying KDE daemon failed to load. Is there a way to roll back the update or reload that thing whatever it is? I was starting to get use to KDE, i didnt had any issue even tho is a beta until now. aaaa why everything have to be so difficult.

I have reinstalled windows 7 and now i can't boot ubuntu i've tried easybcd to add ubuntu to win boot loader which failed and tried to follow the instructions to reinstall grub through a live cd which i am in at the moment. i go to a terminal and type sudo grub and it brings up the grub prompt. i have mounted all discs and entered the command find /boot/grub/stage1 and it keeps spitting this back at me Error 15: File not found

I would like to apply KDE on my Kubuntu because the current one blew up. But each time I to sudo get-apt it seems to be fetching from the cloud. Is there a way I can make it to read from my local Kubuntu CD? I have both Ubuntu 10.04 LTS and Kubuntu Live CDs.
I believe the local disk read should be faster to translate than to bite the bytes across thousands of miles over the wire right?

View 7 Replies View RelatedInstalled 10.10 onto a brand new HD. Using the computer to introduct myself to both Ubuntu and file server concepts. I also installed Samba and was communicating wirelessly with 2 Win 7 machines. THEN I upgraded to 11.04, could not get wirless internal card (B43) to work. Everthing is a mess my 11.04 computer is a doorstop. I tried to reinstall 10.10 from the orignal distribution disk I had created. I would like to take off 11.04 and go back to 10.10 with Samba and a functioning wireless card. I have backed up files, I would just like 11.04 off and 10.10 back. I do not wish to deal with the wireless B43 driver and 11.04 for now.

I get this error message: No Boot Device Available, Press Enter to Retry.For some reason my OS loads no problem if I am just restarting my system. This just started happening out of the blue.I've already reinstalled a couple of times off the live CD and also deleted and reinstalled GRUB2 with no luck. Now I'm thinking about trying to delete and reinstall my MBR, but I don't know the safest/best way to do this. Can I do this with gparted? Is this something that can only be done in terminal? I've seen commands like install - mbr ... should I use this route?
