I use Jessie, with the Aptitude curses interface for package management. It seems that every time I successfully uninstall/purge a package (along with its dependencies), then the next time I try to install/uninstall anything else it wants to reinstall that package (and its dependencies). It takes several (I haven't counted) "don't install" instructions from me before it will forget about it.

View 6 Replies View RelatedI had been doing some removal of packages, and things went well, or so I thought. Now whenever I try and install any package using aptitude, some old state is lingering around and wants me to install packages that I do not want, and remove some packages that I am not sure about removing (did I actually select those to be removed??) I removed libvirt etc, and now it wants to come back? Also, like I mentioned, why remove those other four packages?

Running squeeze, and enjoying it so far, apart from a broken out of the box synergy (compiled my own synergy-plus to fix that issue) and a buggy samba client.
How to find packages with aptitude. If I use the shell to type "aptitude search nethack" then I get a list of several nethack versions from which to choose. If I use the aptitude GUI and type Ctrl-T and then arrow over to the search option and type in "nethack" and hit Enter, the only option that I see is nethack-spoilers. Why do I not see all of the other nethack options?
View 2 Replies View RelatedI am just too tired and am missing something in the man pages for aptitude and not getting my search terms right but I can't seem to find a way to make aptitude ignore a couple of supposed broken packages (they work just fine by the way). The only way I can find to remidy the situation is to remove those couple of packages or upgrade several things to their Squeeze counter parts. I really don't want to try and do the upgrade as at home I am stuck on a 56k connection. Removing the broken packages I guess won't be too bad if I can find the debs again after I install a couple of things I want to add to my system. I would however just like to make aptitude ignore the state of my system and try to install what I want anyway.

I've got a strange problem with my last "aptitude safe-upgrade". It had removed all my kde 4.3 and packages I have installed, I don't know why!
This is what aptitude removed :
$ dpkg -l | grep ^rc |awk '{print $2}' | xargs echo .....
I reinstalled kde-full (kde 4) but now with an aptitude safe-upgrade or dist-upgrade. It wants to remove my debian-multimedia keyrings and my wine-unstable and others each time.

I am new to Debian (just used Gentoo until now), I run a little server for our company and clients. Unfortunately our hosting company switched us from a Gentoo system to a Debian Lenny box with Confixx and stopped maintaining it. So I will need to do the house keeping, which worries me a bit. Today I started and ran: aptitude update && aptitude safe-upgrade and got a huge list with packages to upgrade. Unfortunately, I am not confident, if I will break something upgrading (Confixx, apache) as I get the following warning message:

I am trying to upgrade an amd64 lenny system to squeeze.I've got a 2.6.32 kernel running, done aptitude update and aptitude install aptitude.When I try "aptitude safe-upgrade", it sits forever resolving dependencies.it seems to search with the resolver counting up more and more open/conflict/ whatever.I stopped it once it got over 100,000)Is it possible to get aptitude to do a safe-upgrade, perhaps using a command line option?

View 1 Replies View RelatedI have had this problem repeatedly with aptitude recently. I run Debian Squeeze but in a somewhat unusual fashion - I create a custom live image using the builder on the Debian Live website and then run the live image in persistent mode off a flash drive. For all intents and purposes this has never behaved any differently from a standard Debian install and has given me a great deal of flexibility and power, for which I'm grateful.
However there's been one strange phenomenon that keeps occurring. After a certain point - not before - aptitude stops removing dependencies when I remove packages, though in the ncurses interface the option is shown as switched on (and my .aptitude/config file does not switch it off, nor does any other configuration file that I can find, though maybe I'm missing something). This occurs even in the case of dependencies which I know cannot be depended upon by any other package. e.g. the e17 package in unstable brings in libecore, libevas etc. which are depended on only by e17 as I have no other Enlightenment packages installed. But removing e17 removes only the e17 package and not the dependencies.
The other odd thing is that this does not occur at first. Aptitude works fine for a while on a clean system. At some point though it simply changes in behaviour.
After running "aptitude upgrade" I have been getting a message lately such as "There are x updates available, it is recommended to update your system". But, running aptitude update/upgrade again afterwards, aptitude ignores these supposedly available updates to the system. How can I clear up this situation?. I am using the latest Debian Squeeze distro

I'm developing with puppet, and I need to do an aptitude update from a specific file, here is my configuration: The file sources.list in /etc/apt/ is deleted. I've created 3 files in /etc/apt/sources.list.d each one with their repos:

All the repos are updated/refreshed , and I only want to refresh/update the specific repos insie of the file 01-debian_security_updates.list. On the other hand if I put some repos in the sources.list and delete the 3 files and I create an external file for example in /tmp/temprepo and I do the command aptitude update -o dir::etc::sourcelist=/tmp/temprepo it works fine.give some workaround to update and then upgrade packages from the files specified in my config.
I have downloaded the package but i dont know how to install and start the program.

I have just installed Debian Lenny and was trying to upgrade the installed packages from the packages.debian.org site. when i asked synaptic to add the downloaded packages the would not appear, but when i checked the .xsessions file there are entries saying that the packages were being ingnored because they were either different versions, the MD5 did not match or even "can't find pkg". i have to use the local library to download the packages because i dont have an internet connection at home.

View 1 Replies View RelatedIt's trying to fix/complete failed installs but keeps encountering the same errors (error message below). I'm running basically Testing, but there are a few Stable and SID packages due to issues with the blasted nVidia legacy drivers. I've swapped out the video board with an ATI board so that is sorted, but now I can't do any updates. Hoping there is some way to manually override apt's determination to try to fix all broken packages whenever I do anything (install, remove, update, etc). A Google search of this error message didn't turn up anything recent. Any thoughts are welcome.

View 4 Replies View RelatedI'm new here, I hope someone can help me get wireless working on my laptop. This is a Toshiba Satellite Pro C650-EZ1533 (Intel Core i3). The Toshiba site says it has "Atheros Wireless networking (802.11b/g/n)", but does not identify the hardware more specifically.
I installed Debian 6.0 from a netinstall disc, the version including nonfree hardware drivers. In the software selection I went with the defaults: only "Desktop environment", "Laptop" and "Basic system".
Now the GUI looks nice and behaves OK, and the audio, video, ethernet, and optical drive are working. However, I don't know how to configure wireless. It's probably my fault. I was installing and uninstalling file managers, trying to find one I would like better than Nautilus. When I went to uninstall one of them, a message in the package manager recommended using a command like "auto remove" or similar (I did not record it exactly). My understanding at the time was that this would only remove things that were installed because of dependencies but were no longer needed. However, *a lot* of things disappeard from the menus.
Now the only thing about networking in the menus is something about setting up a proxy. There should be some sort of network manager, right? Or an icon on the taskbar, maybe? But I don't know what package to install.
I use Debian Stretch and I've installed it twice with the same ISO on the same laptop. First just to test a few things, then freshly installed it again.
The first time the wireless card was named wlan0 (as always for me, I've never had another name), the second time though it was suddenly named wlp3s0.
How did this occur and may I change it back to wlan0?
I run a Squid 3 server that is acting as a web filter. It worked fine on Etch. The system stopped working properly due to two of the three SATA cables being bad. Before I figured that out, I tried doing updates. Since Etch updates were no longer available, I did a distupgrade to Lenny. Immediately, Squid stopped working properly. It would take up to two and a half minutes for it to respond to a web request and add it to the access.log. This was using the same configuration file that it was using before the update.
After I found the hardware problem, I did a clean install of Lenny. I used the basic squid.conf like I did on the previous system, only changing it to add my ACLs and because it wasn't saving an access.log to the default location unless I uncommented the path directive. Now, it won't respond to a request at all. Forwarding is enabled and the firewall seems to be set up correctly.
A week or so ago I ran an aptitude safe-upgrade and while it was updating mysql I suffered a power-failure. Now, this never really happens in Holland but of course this once it happened at the worst possible time.
I've tried a lot of different things to get mysql working again, but am running into all kinds of problems. First mysql won't shut off properly (it does startup with the computer but I can't connect to it at all) during an aptitude purge. If I kill the process mysql seems to purge properly, but I guess this is not the case because I wasn't able to install it then.
Things seem to have gone a bit more smoothly this time, however:

I recently reinstalled Lenny and I am attempting to save my /home directory. I used the graphical install and when it came to the part about partitioning, I created a new /home partition "hdb1" and told the installer to ignore my old /home partition "/dev/hda9".Following the completion of the install, I logged in and changed my /etc/fstab so that /home --> my old /home partition "/dev/hda9". I then mounted the old partition to /home and rebooted the system. Now, when I go to my /home directory >> properties, I can see that the files I had are on the drive (2GB are used) --- but --- I cannot actually see the files??
