Yesterday i have installed F14 and then went to the comand line to update the system via yum update. It was about 860MB of updates in 430 packages. The strange thing is that only one package was a delta rpm and all other were normal rpm. Is Fedora giving up on presto or it needs some special configuration?

I have Mythbuntu 10.04 installed on an exclusive HTPC and working great... until tonight. After letting the system update some packages (161 packages if I remember right), I suddenly have an issue where the graphical system won't start. After researching I found three error messages that might be causing that.
1. At the start of splash screen I see "UUID=xxxxxxxCD7 not ready yet or not present" I checked in /etc/fstab and found that this is the swap partition. I don't remember seeing this before so this could be the culprit.
2. I'm not at the computer in question right now but I saw a Plymouth error about "mountall" and then the message "plymouth command failed". Not sure if this could be the main error.
3. after a while (usually ca. 1-2 min) I receive thousands of errors of the kind "out of memory"... "kill process XXXX" (process vary wildly e.g. dbus-daemon, mysql, etc)... "process killed"..."respawning"
After error 3, I'm not able to switch to graphical console (ctrl-alt-F7). If I was in the graphical console at this moment, I simply can't switch to the CLI console. I'm always afraid of updating my system since I've seen lots of things breaking afterwards (usually the proprietary graphic drivers) but this is really strange.

I have Fedora 11 installed on a Dell Precision M60 lap-top, running KDE. I've used KDE for years, but a number of issues with KDE 4 had forced me to look at alternatives recently. With F11, KDE 4 seems to be getting more functional, being more or less usable for real work... However, a couple weeks ago, I ran "yum update" and picked up KDE 4.3.1, and while it seems to have fixed a few more things, there also seems to be a regression in terms of performance - on this lap-top anyway.
Basically any window operation -- opening a new one, moving, resizing, even moving the mouse from one window to another (I use auto-focus) -- is slow, and during this time the CPU load from the "X" process becomes very high -- close to 100% according to "top". When not "touching" any windows, CPU load goes back to normal. I did run across some advice to turn off desktop effects, which I did -- it reduced the sluggish response slightly, but the problem is still present. And I had the same settings before the update, and performance was fine.
Here is some info about this machine:
Dell Precision M60 lap-top
CPU: Intel(R) Pentium(R) M processor 1.70GHz
RAM: 1 GiB (not a lot by today's standards, but this issue does not seem related to swapping)
video: nVidia Quadro FX Go700 (using default installation, nouveau driver)
display: 1920 x 1200
kernel: 2.6.30.5-43.fc11.i586
KDE: kdebase-4.3.1-2.fc11.i586

I just allowed Update Manager to install the latest security updates to the Linux kernel, header and xorg and clicked on restart system. After selecting Ubuntu from the system's boot manager I'm dropped into a Grub command line and don't have any idea what to do next. I'm running Ubuntu 9.10 inside Windows 7 on a Toshiba L500 laptop using the Wubi setup.

My system system suffers from frequent kernel panics, which I think are due to gnome-shell with the nVidia driver. (I see no panic message and nothing is logged, but I've enabled magic SysRq and it makes no difference.) Twice this has occurred during yum-update's install stage, which is making me wonder. Uum-update then complained about an unfinished transaction, so I ran yum-complete-transaction as suggested. I've also tried yum-clean-all and rebuilding the RPM database, suggested in other threads, but I'm still seeing the following errors on yum-update:
--> Finished Dependency Resolution
Error: Protected multilib versions: 1:cups-libs-1.4.7-3.fc15.i686 != 1:cups-libs-1.4.6-15.fc15.x86_64

I don't know where these 32-bit packages have come from this is an x86-64 system and the only x86-32 stuff I've intended to install is the Adobe flash plug-in. Also the later dupes are different 64-bit versions. I've tried "package-cleanup --cleandupes" as suggested in this thread: [URL]. It wants to remove the old versions, but also wants to remove packages that depend on them, including clutter, so I cancelled that. The first time round I was left with a barely usable system and had to reinstall, which I'd rather avoid, especially if this is going to be a regular occurrence. I'm not familiar with RPM (or kernel panics for that matter).

I'm running Ubuntu 9.10 in a dual boot alongside Windows vista on an HP DV6000 laptop.It's been running smoothly for months. No problems.Today, I was in Ubuntu, and the Update Manager asked me to update (ok) and then said it needed to restart. I hit the restart now button and the system started to shut down, but never fully shut down. It's in a kind of loop, trying to start up, but not going all the way, and then shuts down again.I did a hard reboot but still nothing - the same loop. I don't even see my HP startup screen, nor can I access the BIOS, much less Grub.I put in the Ubuntu startup CD and it tries to read from that at startup, but then fails and returns to the same loop.

I installed Lucid Beta a few days ago and was happy with the way everything worked. The system wanted an update on Thursday night, I installed it and then carried on using it for about an hour, it was then shutdown normally with no errors. On Friday morning it would not boot. I pressed the "on" button it came on, all the other lamps lit ie Caps and Num Lock, the battery light is on anyway, but the hard drive light is not flashing, it's as though it isn't being accessed, but I can hear it? There is no display on the screen. I'm running an Acer Aspire One. My initial thoughts are bios related, but I can't see how that would have changed, then I think maybe the Harddrive is knackered.

I have a server that was running 10.04 and I decided to upgrade it to 10.10 as I had already done this successfully to a different server.The upgrade was about 3/4 way through when I can't exactly remember why but it had to shut down I think it may have got stuck on a simple package update anyhow when I next turn on the server the login screen if different with a purple background and a popup about a gnome power installation error comes up after I enter my user name and password the login box freezes up and a box comes up saying that a unknown process has stop working and gives me the options to 'lock screen', 'cancel' or 'log out anyway' if I press 'cancel' the box disappears and nothing happens if I press 'log out anyway' the login box the bottom bar and the pop-up disappear if I wait a little 'update manager' comes up saying I can partly update some packages after I enter my password to do this though it all closes and does not reappear all you can do is move the mouse.

I'm running Kubuntu natty on grub-efi-amd64. I've just received notification of a bunch of new packages to install, I believe part of it is a kernel update. When I click on "apply" a window comes up which says "Additional changes are required to complete the task". "2 packages to remove" lists "grub-efi" and "grub-efi-amd64". It lists 5 packages to install 3 of which are linux kernel and 2 of which are the bios version of grub.
How can I update my system without having efi-grub removed?

I originally tried Ubuntu 9.10 via a windows installation through Wubi. I had a VERY complex problem with a "Kernal Panic" due to an update through update manager and my system would not run proficiently. I wanted to know if that bug was exclusive to Wubi installations or does it also exist with this method of installation. I'm not going to update ANYTHING until I know for sure.

yesterday I performed an automatic security update suggested by the update manager on my virtualized (with VirtualBox on a Windows 7 host) Ubuntu 10.10 installation.
The update somehow failed and left me with an unbootable system. When I try to boot, I am told that various folders, files, and what not are missing. Then the system drops into a busybox and leaves me with an (initramfs) prompt.
This happens with all kernels I get offered by GRUB, although the error messages are quite different from kernel to kernel.
Well, the short of it is this: I don't have the slightest idea on how to get back to a working system and this site is the final straw I'm willing to grab. A complete disaster like this following an update initiated and executed by the system is unheard of in Windows-land; at least I haven't heard of it, yet, and therefore I am going to abandon Ubuntu and Linux altogeteher, if there is no remedy.
