General :: Reinstall But Graphic Install From ISO Sees No Existing System (s) 2overwrite?

Jun 11, 2011

Lost my guru, ran out of HD space, erased too much, need to reinstall. Downloaded ISO, burned disk, tested disc, tried to install, but it fails to recognize old partitions in the prepare space part. Hardware is a 4-system(partition) SSD in RAID 0, with all the bootable systems, and a 4-partition HD in RAID 0 (one disk failing) for data only. How to I get it to recognize a particular partition on the SSD RAID 0 to install over? AND can it reinstall the system software and leave the other stuff as it was installed over 2 years?

Ubuntu Installation :: Reinstall 10.04 LTS Over Existing 10.04 System

Sep 30, 2010

I am starting to have lots of unusual problems show up on my Ubuntu 10.04 install, missing Icons for the Volume Slider, Email Icon, and a Error mounting Static on startup (because I plugged in my Smartdisk FDUSB-TM2 Mitsumi Model #: D353FUE) and it is trying to mount as SDC instead of as a USB Floppy Drive.....and it DOES NOT work as a USB Floppy Drive on 10.04.REF:[URL] I have my system set up as follows:

Code:

Disk /dev/sda: 500.1 GB, 500107862016 bytes
255 heads, 63 sectors/track, 60801 cylinders
Units = cylinders of 16065 * 512 = 8225280 bytes

[code]....

If I boot from the LiveCD again, and Install again from the LiveCD, will all my installed software still be functional, or will I have to re-install, and repeat everything I have done to build my system to date since my system is on / and is a separate partition?

OpenSUSE Install :: Can't Boot Existing 11.3 Nor Reinstall?

Aug 2, 2010

On my Desktop I am experiencing a very weird behavior. First of all, I would like to mention that I am posting from the very same machine...just under Windows (which tends me to roll our hardware issues).

Next, a short history I installed 11.2 on my machine when it came out last year. I upgraded my hardware (new mainboard, cpu, ...) without reinstalling. Everything went fine I upgraded to KDE 4.4...still everything ok I did a system upgrade to 11.3 final using zypper And there it starts. After the upgrade, the first boot didnt work as expected (the system just hang). So I just did a restart and 11.3 was up and running. Now, since last week, I cannot boot my system at all. The screen just shows me the boot-splash but the progress bar isnt moving a thing. So I started with the option splash=verbose which did not show me a single line of output. The system just hangs right after the GRUB selection occured. So I decided to download 11.3, burn it to a disc and reinstall it. Well...this doesnt work either At least it shows me some lines of output, which look fine, but some lines after starting KDM the screen goes black and thats it. The only way I got something was when I started the installation in Textmode. I was able to log in but I dont know what to do then. I ran yast2 but it didnt look like I could install the system that way.It would be nice to get it running with my home-partition still in place.

OpenSUSE Install :: Reproduce Existing System On New Machine?

Jan 24, 2011

In the near future I will be obliged to change my computer. Currently, my system is OpenSuse 11.2 with KDE 4.5.3 on a dual-boot (with WinVista) laptop. I plan to have the new machine again be dual-boot (Win7).

First question: Is there a way to "describe" the current system in a way that, after the initial partitioning and probably a basic installation of OpenSuse 11.2, makes it easy to reproduce the current OpenSuse 11.2 installation (i.e., installed packages, profiles; more?) on the new machine? This would reduce manual work to copying some system files (e.g., /etc/csh.cshrc and similar) and of course /home/username etc.

Second question: Same as first, but this time with a change to OpenSuse 11.3 or the soon to come OpenSuse 11.4. A potential initial installation of OpenSuse 11.2 would be possible.

Fedora Installation :: F12 (Install Or Upgrade Existing System) Sony Vaio

Jun 22, 2010

I've had such good luck with Fedora (and this Forum), I'm attempting to put F12 on wife's brand new Sony Vaio, a VPCEB11FM, a 64bit system. I downloaded the Fedora-12-x86_64-netinst.iso, made sure it was ok with sha256.exe, then burned the image to DVD. Booted it up and let it default to "install or upgrade an existing system". It dead-ended in a dark blue or black screen. I re-started and examined the other options. Thought I'd try the one that says: "Install system with basic video driver". Got all the way through to where it got ready to start downloading files. Can't get past that point because it attempts to get to the Internet using the Sony's wireless card! Why would it try the wireless when there's a wired NIC card in this PC that requires no special driver etc. How to proceed from here?

OpenSUSE Install :: Reinstall System Without Formatting Hard Disk?

Aug 31, 2010

I've recently installed openSUSE 11.3 with GNOME When I was working on desktop settings, it locked itself, and it doesn't accept password I set during installation. I know that password is right, because it worked in YaST.

How to solve this problem without loosing any files? I haven't done backup... Is it possible to reinstall system, without formatting hard disk, and loosing files?

General :: Adding XP To An Existing Ubuntu System

Oct 4, 2010

I want to move my windows XP image from my old PC's C: and put it onto my new PC, with Ubuntu 9.10 already on it. Will this procedure work?First I'll burn an iso image of the windows C: to a CD or DVD, using the Win XP computer. Then, I'll load a (live Ubuntu), from my thumb drive and boot into my new PC, and move the Ubuntu partition to another location, in order to create the partition needed to install a Windows OS. I know that Windows, God bless them, needs to be first on the HDD. This procedure will destroy the grub loader. Then rebooting should load correctly to the grub bootloader, right?

General :: Partition On An Existing System - Extended Not Being Used

Jul 14, 2011

I have a 120GB HD that I installed my linux-mint distro to and have been using for a while now, maybe a year or so. However, it has been running great so I haven't paid much attention to the actual install. Recently, I have been getting notifications of very low disk space remaining. I ran gparted and discovered that there is a very large extended partition that doesn't appear to be mounted. Can I just boot into a terminal, set a mount point and be on my way or will this hurt my existing installation? What is the safest set of steps to mount this partition since it looks to be the swap space as well?

Code:
Here is output of fdisk for the drive:
Disk /dev/sdb: 122.9 GB, 122942324736 bytes
255 heads, 63 sectors/track, 14946 cylinders

In my company's production server, there are already mysql, php and httpd packages installed and running. Configurations are already made to the httpd.conf and my.cnf files.

Now I have to upgrade the packages to the latest version. I have to perform a yum update for the whole system first, then reinstall the packages right?

Will this affect the changes made to the configuration files? If yes, how do I upgrade so that the changes are not affected?

General :: Mount A Hard Drive With Pre-existing File System And Data?

Mar 23, 2010

I had a drive that kept kernel panic'ing so my data center recommended using the spare hard drive to reinstall OS on, and import the data from the old drive. (they checked the hardware, it wasn't the hardware) The new install is done, and I need to mount the old drive and get backups off it since my data center does not provide management whatsoever.

It's the same OS on both (Cent OS 5.4 32-bit) I'm an advanced user on windows, but linux gets me. I can ssh in, do basic stuff like setup IP ranges and restart services. I normally navigate the box through SFTP so I have a gui. WHM shows me my drives as such

Found Disk: hda
Found Disk: sdb

so I'm assuming SDB is my old drive and the drive I need to access. I attempted to follow instructions on

cyberciti.biz/faq/freebsd-adding-second-hard-disk-howto/

but I'm assuming FreeBSD would work differently and I wasn't totally sure what the labels of the file systems should be.

General :: Reinstall Ubuntu On A Dual Boot System ?

Feb 22, 2011

On my Ubuntu 10.04.1, the ethernet doesn't work for my dual boot (Windows Vista) machine. I can run Ubuntu 10.04.2 from a USB flash drive & would like to install it over the non working 10.04.1.

My Ubuntu is on my dev/sda6 partition (I think the swap is on sda7) but when I try to install on that partition I get a question about the root.

How do I install Ubuntu on that partition without messing up my Vista. (I did it wrong on my netbook & had to rebuild the whole computer). I think I can delete partitions, expand vista to take all the free space & then reinstall Ubuntu "side by side" but that seems like the hard way.

I don't know how to select the correct options to reinstall Ubuntu without changing the partitions.

Ubuntu Installation :: Dual Install, 2 HDD And Sees All WinXP Doesnt?

Jan 11, 2010

I have 2 Hard drives, the original 30GBs with Windows XP on it, My son put 2nd hard drive into pc as slave (400GB), no problems, WinXP recognised 2nd drive. This was all a way to give 'good ole Mum' a chance to muck about with Linux.Got a Linux Format Mag with Ubuntu 9.10 on it, amongst others, but this one I knew from previous use. I have installed it on the 2nd hard drive, not sure if I correctly (manually) partitioned but I put ( I believe) a home partition, a swap partition, left ( so I thought) a 3rd partition space, and said install. Ubuntu runs fine and see the small HD with WinXP but WinXP doesnt see the HD with Ubuntu, and I wanted to use the 3rd partition for the WinXp as I need to use that for Grant writting I do for not for profit organisations govt depts that I apply for grants from are MS freaks, that said, all runs ok but what have I done that wont let WinXP see to utilise the 3rd partition. Be kind, I have a load of senior moments these days

General :: Knoppix 6.0.1 Installation With Existing Vista Install?

Dec 6, 2009

System: Lenovo R61i, that had Ubunta installed, removed and Vista Home Pre. installed. Plenty of hardware power. Want to install a Knoppix 6.0.1 from an existing CD I have. I want to be able to run both systems on the laptop (dual boot)? I have partitioned the hard drive using vista, so there is now a partition that I believe is Lenovo rescue, the main large C space, and the new partition about 6.4 gb that vista shrank out that is not assigned. When I try to install the Knoppix it just keeps loading in and ends up running live off the CD without installing to the hard drive.

I have stopped the loading sequence in different places, but don't know what to enter or where. I also wanted to install it onto my 64 gb flash drive that has nothing installed but comes up showing that it is fat 32. I have tried to install to the flash drive from the live running Knoppix under install to usb drive, it finds the drive, I select it, and the next window says there is no such file. So, that's my story and I'm stickin to it. All I want to do is get this system onto the laptop or flash so I don't ever have to deal with Microsoft Windows again!

General :: Knoppix Sees Hda Instead Of Sda- Can't Recover?

May 23, 2011

I thought I knew my way around a little, but apparently mounting is still a complete mystery to me. I'm trying to back up my data with Knoppix since Ubuntu won't start up. something weird is happening with the keyboard and it starts spamming ^[[26~ across the splash screen. When I try to read my hard drive, Knoppix tells me "mount: wrong fstype, bad option, bad superblock." It seems like it should be a pretty common error, but I haven't found any anything helpful and understandable that doesn't involve rebooting (won't get me anywhere with Knoppix). I think it has something to do with Knoppix insisting my drive is hda instead of sda, though I have read that Ubuntu likes to tell you hda is sda anyway. Knoppix is the only distro that has worked on a live boot so far.I've thought of trying dd, dd rescue, or just cp onto my external, but I don't know if Knoppix's hda business will make a working backup. The other computers around are all Windows with no extra space, so I don't know what the easiest and safest way is to test wether the back up worked.
