General :: Looking For Hardware Reasons Why Suspend And Hibernation Don't Work
Jan 6, 2010
My suspend-to-disk and suspend-to-RAM stopped working months ago. I've grasped at straws about why ever since, but I really don't think it's a software problem, because I've reinstalled my system (MEPIS) repeatedly. What sort of hardware failures could cause this? What should I be looking for? I notice that at boot, Linux always says "no resume image found," even if I left the system in suspension or hibernation. I can post parts of the dmesg if someone tells me what to look for; I can't display the whole thing because it's too long to fit here.
ASUS P5Q Deluxe, Intel Core 2 Duo, GeForce 8800, 4GB RAM, USB keyboard and mouse never had problems with suspend and hibernation in Ubuntu. Until the latest version 10.10. Both before and after installing the proprietary Nvidia drivers, the system enters the sleep and hibernate but I can not wake up properly. Specifically, while it looks as it starts up, but not fires up the X server. Oddly - operate only CTRL + ALT + F1-12. You can switch to the text cosole, see the "incentive" to sign but other keys do not work and nothing can be entered. Not working CTRL + ALT + DEL as well, so you need to turn off the system power.
I just installed openSUSE 11.3 but cannot get hibernation (or suspend to disk) working. It does not go to hibernation but instead it just locks the screen. The relevant error in /var/log/pm-suspend.log looks like below.
According to /usr/lib/pm-utils/sleep.d/30s2disk-check '/dev/dm-1' must be the swap partition. What i don't understand is that why the error says swap partition is not active. There is no error for swap partition during boot time. Boot message says that swap partition is activated.
/usr/lib/pm-utils/sleep.d/06autofs hibernate hibernate:Shutting down automount ..done success. /usr/lib/pm-utils/sleep.d/30s2disk-check hibernate hibernate:INFO: checking for suspend-to-disk prerequisites... ERROR: resume partition '/dev/dm-1' not active, can not suspend
[code]...
Below is fdisk -l information for the disk which has swap partition.
/dev/dm-0p1 1 2089 16779861 82 Linux swap / Solaris Partition 1 does not start on physical sector boundary. /dev/dm-0p2 2090 3395 10482431+ 83 Linux
I am using Ubuntu 9.10 on an Acer Aspire 5050 (5052AWXMi model) and I am experiencing some problems of system Hibernation and Suspend. When I put my laptop to sleep mode (suspend) then after pressing a button system tries to open but what I get it is only a black screen. The same problem appears also when I am trying to hibernate my system. After opening my laptop again I am getting a message < waking up. Please wait > but then I get again a black screen.
Using 64Bit Ubuntu 10.04 on a VAIO VGN-FW373J. ATI Mobility Radeon HD 3650. This relates to Bug 451282. If I install the ATI 3D Drivers, the dimming problem goes away, but a host of other bugs crop up. After a resume from screen lock, suspend, or hibernation, the screen is reduced to graphical chaos. There are also hibernation errors. This bug is worse than the dimming bug, so I've uninstalled the 3d ATI drivers. If I can't find a workaround, I may have to look for a different Linux Distro or be content with Windows 7 on this particular laptop.
For the sake of security, I want the screen to be locked after the system is resumed from suspend or hibernation. Now the only way I can do this is to check the options "Lock screen when screen saver is active." in the screensaver preference. But this method is annoying since I have to type the password to quit the screensaver. Is there other way to do this? Thanks.
My hibernation was working out_off_the_box but now it has strange issue. This is debian testing with kernel 2.6.38.4 "hibarnation-disk" hibernate successfully ,with an error though ( seen from hibernate-disk -v2 --dry-run) hibernate-disk:Warning: Tuxonice binary signature file not found Anyhow , after executing the hibernation , on the next boot, the system boots from scratch and not from the resume image. During boot a message is displayed though Invalidating stale software suspend images I have done some google search but none of the solution work so far, including reinstalling the package itself.
My web server does not currently run Suexec. All files within the /var/www directory are owned by vsftpd and belong to nogroup. Apparently, this setup causes issues with some scripts that attempt to upload files and change files, such as the SMF Forum package.
Here's some background information that goes into further details regarding the issues I'm having:[URL]..Why would uploading a file using PHP in SMF not work with the owner being vsftpd belonging to the nogroup when the folder has been chmod to 777? I tested my own simple PHP upload script, and it was able to upload a file without issues. Yet, I've been told that my server is improperly configured if I'm not using Suexec. Why is this? Also, if I did use Suexec, what creates the users? Would I have to add them manually, or would they be created automatically as users based on their FTP login and added as subusers to the vsftpd group? Why should I use Suexec? I don't understand what's wrong with my current setup. How does it work in terms of users? Are users created and just added to a subgroup, or are they created like normal user accounts on the actual server? Do they get their own /home/username directory as well? I'm so confused about Suexec. What I've read about it doesn't make sense.[URL]..
I have 3 cronjobs set up on my Unix server . Out of which 2 cron jobs run the same script but at different times and the other one runs another script. So in the 2 jobs which are set to run PMDaily.sh for eg , One runs on Sunday at 8AM and the other runs monday to friday at 6 AM . How ever the Sunday cronjob works (runs through the crontab) but the Cron job set for Monday to Friday is not working. However manually if i run this script it workd perfectly.
Please let me know what could be the possible reasons for this?
First of all let me introduce myself. My name is Rasheed and i am from UAE, after not having any reply from a week in Fedora's official forum i came across the linuxquestions through google and hoping to help others and resolve my issues as well with the help of experts here. So here is my problem what i am currently having. I am going through a serious issue right now. My laptop crashes when SUSPEND/HIBERNATE or unplugging the laptop's charger.
I have NFS fileserver that has served me well for more than year. But recently I noticed that it has started to reboot on its own very frequently, almost once a day! It is most likely not a power related issue as I tried changing UPS/power sources, but no help!So my question is:Is there any log file where I can check which is causing the reboot? There may not be a single logfile, but I need some point to start the investigation!
Hibernation on my laptop doesn't work. When I try to hibernate (either manually or automatically because battery goes critically low), any of the following can happen (randomly):
A. During the hibernation process it hangs forever with a black screen (with or without some error messages unanderstandable to me) and never terminates hibernation. I have to manually turn it off by holding the power button, and when I turn it on again, it does a fresh boot.
B. Instead of hibernating, it just locks screen.
C. It (apparently) terminates the hibernation (the power goes off automatically as if it had succesfully hibernated, even if AC power is connected), but then, when I turn the computer on, instead of resuming it does a fresh boot.
D. It hibernates succesfully and when I turn it on it resumes succesfully. This almost never happens; it has been a long long time since the last time it happened.
I am far from being the only one and this has been so for years. The bug has been reported in launchpad by a lot of people a long time ago, so if it has not been fixed in such a long time it must mean that the developers don't think it deserves much attention. (Which is strange by the way, because an operating system with non-bulletproof hibernate/suspend is an operating system that you just cannot safely use, at least on a laptop.)
I have installed VirtualBox and since then resuming from hibernation doesn't work again (my previous thread: [URL] ....). My question is: Can VirtualBox kernel modules (vboxpci, vboxnetadp, vboxnetflt, vboxdrv) break hibernation? If yes, what to do? Maybe unload them before hibernation, blacklist when resuming and load after resume? And how to do that with systemd? URL....
After the upgrade, I've noticed a problem I haven't had before - hibernating worked fine to the last. The problem is, although the system correctly hibernates, it makes no attempt to "wake" from hibernation when I power it up - it boots normally, and with fsck-ing like it was powered off without proper shutdown (understandably). I don't know why it happens, and I've skimmed the logs, but noticed nothing special. What could be the problem? What could I try? Which log should help someone find that out?
What are the benefits to upgrading to F15 from F14 if any? Has there been some huge step forward in performance, security or some other reason that makes it worth while to upgrade? I know many people make the move simply because they wish to have the latest and greatest, but is there any reason specifically to upgrade to the latest and greatest?
Now a dayz I am observing that mUbuntu performance was not satisfactory. My ubuntu is daily up to date. What was the reasons for my Ubuntu becoming slow?
when i try to run a program in linux it runs and prints some messages successfully but in the middle it shows the message 'Killed' and stops running. what may be the reasons for this..?
I've been running 6.0.2 amd64 stable since release day and recently have noticed my suspend and hibernate do not work. Normally I have transmission running and have set it to not enter sleep mode while torrents are active. However today I have not had transmission and was wanting to see if the sleep mode options would kick in. So I have set my display to "sleep when inactive for" 5 mins (this works perfect) I have set "put computer to sleep when inactive for" 10 mins (this does not work at all)
When I try to manually test suspend my display flashes black for a few seconds but remains backlit, then asks me to log back in When I manually go into hibernate mode my display turns off, pops back on for a second and in a terminal says something about a usb device (something failed but it happens so fast I cannot read it)
Recently I've been working intensively in my laptop (F12 x86_64) and so I usually only suspend it when I move between home and school, so I can continue working exactly where I left.
Alongside with a problem (now irrelevant given the context) of sluggish video performance after resuming from suspend (addressed in another thread), I've found another annoying problem involving sound (it embarrassed me in the library): after suspend I can no longer use headphones! Sure, I can have them on, but the laptop speakers play as well!
I tried several things in alsamixer and the only option was to entirely shut the volume down.
Of course I would hate to reboot the machine, besides I imagine it is a matter of restarting some service.
Is there a fix or at least a workaround for this sound issue without rebooting the machine?
I've done an Ubuntu 10.04 CLI install and installed the packages I wanted for a desktop environment. In a vanilla Ubuntu install, closing the laptop lid gets Ubuntu to go into suspend properly. In my setup, closing the lid triggers nothing. How do I get it to trigger a suspend?
The OS is Lucid 64-bit . Before I begin I must say suspend/hibernate works fine with 3 other machines, so I'm trying to find out what's wrong with this one. I tried [URL].. and also I tried changing acpi-support. It currently is as this:
How do I enable suspend in Lenny currently I can shut down or hibernate. In ubuntu on a different computer I can suspend which resumes very quickly can this work on Lenny also it does not hibernate properly anyway, there are error messages.
after search and look at in vcar/log/pm-suspend.log I changed and quoted line to /usr/lib64/pm-utils/sleep.d/00logging who are reference to command free
I am looking for the log messages where I can find out what time my netbook hibernated? I have checked in the /var/log. And all I could see was pm-suspend.log and pm-powersave.log.
Is there one which would tell me what time my computer hibernated? The reason for this is when I go out I leave my netbook running on the battery. When the battery get to about 5% it will hibernate. I just what to see what time it did hibernate?
got a suspend problem with OpenSuse 11.3. I configured the powersave module that whenever I close down the screen of my laptop it suspends to ram. Works fine so far except when the screensaver is active. It just stays on when I close down the lid.
I was trying to install subversion on my machine which have lenny installed on it but when I tried to forward port 22. I got a message connection refused and when I tried to open it in iceweasel it shown me that the port has been restricted for security reasons. I wish to enable it but don't know how to.
I have Debian Squeeze x64 on ThinkPad T61p with standard 2.6.32-5-amd64 kernel. thinkpad_acpi loaded as module, suspend to RAM works fine from menu in KDE as well as by closing the lid, however machine doesn't appear to react on pressing Fn+F4 which should put it to sleep as well. I've read through thinkpad_acpi documentation and asked Google but so far can't find the solution. Can anyone, point me in correct direction?
Issue: - Can't get suspend to work correctly... - What I need is to be able to either:press Fn+Esc or Fn+F1 to get the computer to suspend
Current situation:
- So last time I learned ACPI and HAL doesn't work nicely togheter - My solution was to disable ACPI. (This gets things working, but not to my satisfaction)... - Currently if I press Fn+F1 this calls: pm-hibernate This takes quite some time, and annoys me. - I want to use: pm-suspend - But I haven't figure out how...? - If I configure power options through gnome-power-management and set the option to Suspend when I press Sleep...
I get the following behavior:
+ PC goes to Hibernate + When I Resume ("thaw"), this goes ok but.. + PC goes back to hibernate automatically.... + Need to resume to get it back up....
