Ubuntu Installation :: Keeping Software Updated For Security Reasons?
Jan 7, 2010 I've recently built a VM appliance using Ubuntu 8.04 that is given to customers for an easy deployment of our software. Ubuntu works great in a VM and its perfect for our software (which is a web application).
Some customers are paranoid (rightfully so) and they will run a vulnerability assessment on the web application. A particular customers' assessment fails as it finds that the appliance isn't running the latest version the Apache web server. I thought that just running "apt-get upgrade" would upgrade all of the software packages to the latest so that failures in the assessment caused by outdated software packages would be resolved... However this is not the case...
I realize that there is a probably a whole process for submitting/approving the latest versions of software packages in Ubuntu, that then get pushed to the repositories - But how does this work? What exactly does "apt-get upgrade" do if it doesnt upgrade packages to the latest?
For example: I need Apache 2.2.11 to fix a particular vulnerability. But when running apt-get upgrade, it doesnt actually upgrade the Apache version number (or any of the other packages). I'm stuck on Apache 2.2.8, and I can't find a .DEB installer for 2.2.11 or later.

I got a message connection refused and when I tried to open it in iceweasel it shown me that the port has been restricted for security reasons. I wish to enable it but don't know how to.

Aug 5, 2011My web server does not currently run Suexec. All files within the /var/www directory are owned by vsftpd and belong to nogroup. Apparently, this setup causes issues with some scripts that attempt to upload files and change files, such as the SMF Forum package.
Here's some background information that goes into further details regarding the issues I'm having:[URL]..Why would uploading a file using PHP in SMF not work with the owner being vsftpd belonging to the nogroup when the folder has been chmod to 777? I tested my own simple PHP upload script, and it was able to upload a file without issues. Yet, I've been told that my server is improperly configured if I'm not using Suexec. Why is this? Also, if I did use Suexec, what creates the users? Would I have to add them manually, or would they be created automatically as users based on their FTP login and added as subusers to the vsftpd group? Why should I use Suexec? I don't understand what's wrong with my current setup. How does it work in terms of users? Are users created and just added to a subgroup, or are they created like normal user accounts on the actual server? Do they get their own /home/username directory as well? I'm so confused about Suexec. What I've read about it doesn't make sense.[URL]..

Oct 15, 2009I have 3 cronjobs set up on my Unix server . Out of which 2 cron jobs run the same script but at different times and the other one runs another script.
So in the 2 jobs which are set to run PMDaily.sh for eg , One runs on Sunday at 8AM and the other runs monday to friday at 6 AM . How ever the Sunday cronjob works (runs through the crontab) but the Cron job set for Monday to Friday is not working. However manually if i run this script it workd perfectly.
Please let me know what could be the possible reasons for this?

I've grasped at straws about why ever since, but I really don't think it's a software problem, because I've reinstalled my system (MEPIS) repeatedly. What sort of hardware failures could cause this? What should I be looking for? I notice that at boot, Linux always says "no resume image found," even if I left the system in suspension or hibernation. I can post parts of the dmesg if someone tells me what to look for; I can't display the whole thing because it's too long to fit here.

Apr 27, 2011Being a former user of Fedora, i decided I'd like to give Ubuntu a try and install so i could switch from a windows environment for ruby on rails development.I downloaded the 10.10 ISO and burned the image to a DVD-RW (a cheap one) at 4xI'm deployed in afghanistan right now, and the only decent internet connection i have is in my office (i work in the network administration/operations office as a NETOPS NCO) and even then my downloads rarely exceed 50kbps. I also don't really have the best pick when it comes to writable media, i'm stuck with imation "plus" cd-r's and dvd-rw's.
After i burned the image to disc, i deleted the iso from my computer since i'm genereally not suppossed to keep personal files on work computers.When i boot to the disc it takes about 45 minutes on average to load into the live environment to do the install or try ubuntu, if i select try ubuntu it's another 10 minutes before it's done loading.The install is even slower, generally takes several hours to complete the install, once the install is complete and i select ubuntu in grub, i get a { DRDY ERR } ru When it tries to load ubuntu and kicks me back into the shell. Nothing appears to be wrong with my hard drive, checkdisk finds nothing.

Ubuntu :: Slow Startup, Plymouth Not Showing, Slow Desktop Load?
May 3, 2010I'm an Ubuntu user since Jaunty, and I've always upgraded my system (NOT fresh install). Everything went fine, but yesterday I upgraded to Lucid. My only concern -for now- deals with startup time. I'm a desktop user (Core2@3GHz) so I think I should boot in less than 10 seconds. Anyway, boot time is 30 seconds - not too much, but there is definetly something wrong with tools I don't know (ureadahead, plymouth, etc.). Attached is my bootchart: can anyone explain me what's wrong?
Also, I don't even see a plymouth Ubuntu themed bootsplash: I only see a blank (black) screen standing for seconds, then I see the bootsplash for less then half a second, then GDM appears :S Not crucial -I know- but how can I fix it? (I don't know if it's related, but I can see the animation at shutdown)Finally, GNOME desktop takes too long to load. I don't know why, but there are 15/30 seconds in between login sound and a usable desktop (with panels and icons, I mean).Please help me, I don't want to do a fresh install. Boot speed is not a dial with desktops - I know - but it can be a symptom that my system is a bit a messy (and I don't like it, since I installed Jaunty less then 1 year ago). (!Forgot! Apr 17, 2011Whenever I transfer a movie into my 16GB USB flash disk, my whole system becomes windows-like and unusable!
When i drag the file(s) into the USB disk folder, it starts out fine and pretty darn fast (25mb/sec) then slowly decreases until it's unbearably slow (3m/sec) and as a side effect my whole system starts deteriorating. I basically have to wait for the file to finish transferring before i can use my desktop again!
This has been happening with every version since Karmic (all 64bit)- I put up with it because I don't use the USB stick that much.. but lately it's been my go to source for transfering large files to/from work.

Apr 28, 2011My 10.10 to 11.04 upgrade has been running now for 2 hours and says it has 15 hours left! Are the servers just max'ed out with people upgrading? We bit worried too after seeing posts that say that some Nvidia cards aren't working with 11.04 but I'll have to wait and see for mine. (Quadro FX 3800)

Jan 19, 2010I have a desktop PC with an Intel 3.2 Ghz Pentium 4 CPU. 1.5 Gb of RAM, and 2 - 200 Gb Seagate HDD (1 is Windows XP only, the other is NTFS and Ubuntu partitions). It is a dual boot system using GRUB, with Windows XP the first item on the menu.lst file, and the latest Ubuntu 9.10 kernel and previous kernels the following items.
My problems are twofold since I upgraded from 8.10 to 9.04 to 9.10 of Ubuntu. First extremely slow boot to Ubuntu (multiple minutes to get to the login screen and then almost the same after login). Over all it may take up to 5 minute to get to a usable Ubuntu running. Once I'm in to Ubuntu, things seem to be okay.
Second problem is when I reboot with the "restart" from the panel, the only way I can reboot to either Ubuntu or Windows XP is to physically turn off the power switch on the back of the computer. If I don't do this the machine never restarts it just tries to start and doesn't ever get to grub start up. After powering off, and then back on the normal reboot, with grub starting and giving the menu.lst options works fine.

Aug 18, 2010I just installed 10.04 Desktop onto an external USB disk and used it to boot an old Acer Veriton 7600G with a Pentium 4 CPU clocked at 2.80 GHz, 3 Gb of memory and an AGP Sapphire ATI Radeon video card with 512 Mb of DDR2. With nothing running, nothing swapping, only 7% of memory in use, and around 11% of both CPUs, this system is so slow that with no programs running it takes about 5 seconds to switch between dropdown menus in the main Applications/Places/System menu. The standard GMatrix screensaver takes forever to crank out a single character.

I've run Memtest86+ no issues.I'm attempting a Windows 7 Dual boot. Windows 7 installed fine. I've split the drive in two 3 partitions via gParted, 50% NTFS, ~50% Ubuntu and 10gig Swap.These operations seemed to work fine.I've heard of other Western Digital drives having Ubuntu issues. Could this be related?

Jan 29, 2011Here it is:I do several things, involving a lot of different software (coding, image manipulation, drawing, video editing, etc).And where I live, internet is utterly slow, so instead of actually benefiting of the quick Ubuntu install, I am doomed to spend countless days re-downloading my packages each time.Before my last format, having gained a slightly greater understanding of how Linux works, I saved all the content of apt archives, so synaptic would pick the packages already downloaded from there.But it does not! It re-downloads every package.What should I do to have synaptic recognize packages that are already there?
Note: I am NOT looking to create a mirror repository, aptOnCd and whatnot. I also DO NOT want to install packages by hand, one by one or all together.All these solutions are certainly valuable (and I've tried a good bunch of them), but then I have to update manually my mirrored repository and/or install updates manually. Furthermore, it leaves me with two directories with packages, apt archive and ~/my-repository, which is just messy (in my view at least).

Jan 2, 2010I recently upgraded from 9.04 to 9.10, and Firefox is painfully slow to use. Changing between already loaded tabs takes almost a second. Scrolling through a loaded tab is also slow and jerky. Other programs (e.g. Thunderbird, or just browsing the filesystem) also seem slower when Firefox is running.
I'm running Firefox 3.5.6. My PC is Compaq Presario 2200 laptop (about four years old) with 768 MB RAM. As another data point, I also have the most recent version of Linux Mint installed on the same PC, running Firefox 3.5.3, with no problems. I've searched, and some problems have apparently been due to DNS problems, but I have problems when I'm offline (wifi physically removed), looking at webpages saved on my disk, which are already fully loaded, so it's not a DNS problem. On windows to EPU-Six i can for example set 1,8Ghz and automaticly vcore drop to 0,967V. On ubuntu the lower value is 2Ghz and 1,1V.
