got a suspend problem with OpenSuse 11.3. I configured the powersave module that whenever I close down the screen of my laptop it suspends to ram. Works fine so far except when the screensaver is active. It just stays on when I close down the lid.

This is in gnome under F11.I have the Power Management Preferences set to put the display to sleep after 30 minutes of inactivity and gnome screensaver is configured for 5 minutes idle time.On a regular basis, I'll leave my computer come back anda) the screensaver hasn't kicked inorb) the screensaver kicked in, but the power management features didn't kick in to put the display to sleep.It seems to be an intermittent problem and usually it goes away after I restart X, but then at some point it comes back. In the past, I've gotten in the habit of being logged in for weeks/months at a time but I find that I can't go more than a few hours without logging out and back in or else the screen won't go to sleep.

View 5 Replies View RelatedI installed debian 6.0 (64 bit) systems, but in the "System - Preferences - Screen Saver " set idle time, and then select "activate creensaver when idle"and"Lock screen when screensaver activated, "but to No response after a set time. But by "ctrl + alt + l" was able to quickly enter the screen saver and lock the screen. May I ask how should I set the idle time after the screen saver and lock into?

View 14 Replies View RelatedI am running the latest ubuntu and I am having trouble getting networking sorted. I have 2 networks, one wired (eth0) and one wireless (wlan0). I connect to the internet using wireless. The problem is that I can only successfully connect to the internet if I disconnect from eth0. I have hit this problem with Windows machines and the solution was to adjust the "interface metric" in "Advanced TCP/IP Settings" so that the wireless was the preferred connection. How can I achieve something similar in Ubuntu?

Intel i3 first gen m 330
4GB RAM
Intel (ironlake) graphics
First off, closing the lid to my laptop doesn't trigger suspend, or anything no matter what I set it to in power options.
I can suspend using "systemctl" or suspend from the "Leave" menu, but upon turning my computer back on, my touchpad and keyboard don't work.
Sometimes, my touchpad will start working after about 15 seconds, but the keyboard doesn't come back. I have to hard reset.
I have a feeling it's something to do with systemd, but I'm not super proficient in linux. Just an end user who is friendly with a terminal.
I have Debian Squeeze x64 on ThinkPad T61p with standard 2.6.32-5-amd64 kernel. thinkpad_acpi loaded as module, suspend to RAM works fine from menu in KDE as well as by closing the lid, however machine doesn't appear to react on pressing Fn+F4 which should put it to sleep as well. I've read through thinkpad_acpi documentation and asked Google but so far can't find the solution. Can anyone, point me in correct direction?
View 6 Replies View RelatedI've tried ubuntu, kubuntu, fedora and linux mint. all 64 bit versions. I've also tried to suspend through applications like acpitool. But nothing works. When I click on Suspend, the screen goes blank but the computer is still running. The wireless network adaptor gets disabled for a second and then comes back on. All I have to do is press a key and I get the unlock screen prompt. Basically, suspend works like 'Lock Screen'. I have a HP Pavillion laptop. Core 2 Duo @ 2 GHz and 4 GB RAM.

View 2 Replies View Relatedpresently my laptop requires a password when the screensaver has been activated(equivalent to the lock screen function). However, when I move the mouse to activate the password prompt, the screensaver freezes (all movement stops) and the password prompt is not visible. It's definitely there - if I type my password, then it brings me back to my desktop. However, if I mistype the password, or accidentally hit the mouse button so that somewhere other than the invisible password field is brought to focus, then entering the password becomes impossible, and I have to do a hard restart (ugh). I'm running an HP Pavilion dv5 laptop, with Ubuntu 9.10.

So switch off suspend and set screensaver. Same. If you leave the room for half an hour it happens even if they are both off. Have hunted for a fix but nothing's worked. Might have something to do with my NFS set up. This is kind of in two parts. Is the problem with the wireless module not restarting after suspend (how do I check for sure?) or Could my NFS network setup have something to do with the issue or separate problem? When I restart the network I get this error and it takes awhile:

The server is a desktop and is not always on so laptop client sluggish and always throws this error when its off. Any way of getting rid of that problem? The other client on the network doesn't have that problem and still shows the share icons on the desktop when the server is not on. Just shows them as empty. On the laptop there are no icons if the server is off. Strange cos the two clients are set up the same way as far as I can see.
The PC is a Toshiba laptop model# x205-s9359 running 11.2, KDE 4.3.5. Its video card is an nVidia 8700 GT. For two years now I've been plagued by random flashes, flickers and even missing scan lines on my screen when I use the nVidia drivers (up to and including 195.36.15), so lately I've been using the nv drivers. I miss the effects, etc. but I can live with that. At least I can get my work done, even if the display isn't as fancy as I'd like.
- When I run the nv drivers I can't suspend the PC to RAM or Disk. This means a lot of wasted time waiting for the machine to shut down and reboot every time I leave my desk for any length of time. If I try to suspend to RAM the only thing that happens is that the network connection disconnects then reconnects immediately. Here's the log file....
- If I try to suspend to Disk the PC appears to suspend as expected, but when it resumes it hangs before restarting X, and there's no keyboard or power button response. I have to use alt-prtsc-reisub to reboot. When the reboot is complete the screen shows all the windows, etc that were present before the suspend. Here's that log file....
-When I run the nVidia drivers the suspend/resume functions work perfectly, but I have to put up with all the problems described above. Here's the log file for Suspend to RAM with nVidia, and here's the one for Suspend to Disk.
I've spent hours searching for clues in these forums, on the openSUSE.org site in general, at KDE.org and with Google and I'm sorry to say that most of I've found is horribly out of date, and/or it's way over my head. or (worst of all) not even dated, so I've no idea whether it's current info relevant to my situation or so out of date that I might do real harm if I were to trust it. (RANT: Is it too hard to put a date on an article?... end of RANT) I'd be quite content to use the nv drivers if I could solve the power management issues, but I'd be equally happy to solve the flickering etc. with nVidia drivers.
I had this problem also in F12, now in F13. Is there a fix for this? It's kind of annoying.

I wanted to get a screensaver as my background so I installed xscreensaver didn't work out to the way I wanted to so I removed it apt-get remove xscreensaver then it asked for some other packages to be removed so I did apt-get autoremove xscreensaver was still there working instead of gnome-screensaver so I did a command search to find folders of xscreensaver and remove them whereis xscreensaver and it did remove them, but gnome-screensaver still doesn't start up.
I've tried this command gnome-Message: screensaver-command --activate but I get this error: Message: Screensaver is not running!
I've tried googling for a way to start gnome-screensaver in terminal but no joy, anyone know how to get this to start.
I upgraded to OpenSuse 11.2 and just about the only thing that doesn't work is my wireless internet. From my research, I should be using the iwl4965 or iwlwifi driver; however my system seems to be running iwlagn. I have no idea how to switch it as neither of the correct drivers can be found in my yast, and I've failed to find any information about this on the Intel® Wireless WiFi Link drivers for Linux* website.

Skype does not work in Suse 11.3. When i start in an terminal, i'm getting this error:
skype: error while loading shared libraries: libQtGui.so.4: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory
I looked for that library but didn't find it in the repositories.

As stated, NO USB functions, not at all, the light on the mouse is on, but it does not move on screen, the PS2 keyboard does not function either. Nothing that would allow you to install it, works at all. I am absolutely shocked not one single person on here has mentioned this.
The last time I tried OpenSuse was version 10, it installed without issue, I noted the installer as the nicest one in the Linux world I had seen to date, only to be utterly let down by this USB fumble.I have Legacy USB support, Legacy Keyboard and Legacy Mouse USB support on, that isn't the issue, and this didn't happen with 10 on the same system.
This is my first post here, so I'm not really sure about what sort of responses I'll get. I'm actually sort of regretting the name I chose cause someone else uses it on another website and I can't seem to change it. But that isn't the real issue, so I'll get to the point.
I've had a problem with my Toshiba L355D running Karmic, and now Lynx, overheating for a while. It doesn't heat up as much as other peoples PC's that I've read about, where I've seen numbers like 100c, but it still is significant. When the computer comes out of suspend the fan setting is at its extreme lowest, and the computer, which has had it's bios updates and the kernel modules set to come on when it loads, don't seem to affect it.
The PC will continue to warm up until it reaches its emergency override when the fan comes on, about 80c, and then the temperature will drop, usually at a low of 50 to 60 if given space to cool and 62 to 72 if it sits on a bed. In windows it runs cool no matter what.
Now I love Linux so far since I converted a year ago, but I'm not happy about this. I can ignore other small things, cause Ubuntu hasn't failed me like how Vista did when it erased itself with disk cleanup or with updates causing it to be unable to start up. I can ignore the netflix problem, and WINE has made things easier in other ways, but this issue is the only one preventing my Ubuntu experience from being great. I've read about suspend bugs where Lynx doesn't suspend, but this isn't that, its that the fan controls don't work until the bios has to step in. I've tried to work with Toshiba Utils and still wasn't able to change it.
Is there a way to force the fan to come back on automatically after suspend? I don't mind it running loud if it protects the machine, I would prefer that it works at all.
In 13.1 I had my laptop set to suspend when the lid is closed and have installed 13.37 now and even though its set to suspend when lid is closed it never does. I am in the power group and if I click on the battery in and choose suspend it will so I have to suspend manually.
View 4 Replies View RelatedThere's an OSS screensaver on windows that I love called PixelCity (links:blog post, github). it's pretty cool. and it runs fine on my Ubuntu (Karmic 9.10) with wine.Is there a way I can tell the gnome-screensaver about it so I can use it as one of my screensavers? I'm still fairly new to Gnome and the whole "screensavers as themes" thing is still confusing me.I've found my themesdir and tried to create a .desktop file for it, but obviously I've gotten something wrong as it just doesn't show when I open the screensaver prefs dialog, no error, no message, it's just not there.
Installing the xscreensaver packages added the extra screensavers I was missing, and I'm a pixelcity away from perfection..Of course the perfect solution would be if someone ported the screensaver natively to linux, which shouldn't be too hard as the source is open, it already runs on openGL and tries to confine most windows stuff to a single file. But I don't know C++ or 3D code or win/linux internals so I wouldn't know where to start..
I installed from scratch 11.2, but i see now that the Automatic update doesn't work. I run "Refresh" on Updater Applet and it come up with an error: PackageKit Error repo-not-available:
