I've done an Ubuntu 10.04 CLI install and installed the packages I wanted for a desktop environment.In a vanilla Ubuntu install, closing the laptop lid gets Ubuntu to go into suspend properly. In my setup, closing the lid triggers nothing. How do I get it to trigger a suspend?

Could I use an ISO remaster program for that task? Or would a simple shell script be easier?
View 2 Replies View RelatedI have the cd image for the install cd of ubuntu 10.04 release candidate. Before I install it, is there anyway to specify which of the default packages I DO NOT want to install (via command line arguments or some other means). There is ALOT of things I DO NOT want, like firefox, "cloud one", "social features", totem, rythmbox, "music store", empathy. I know that the cd allows you to adjust the command arguments for the install command, and something tells me that there should be an argument for specifying which packages to install/not-install or to choose from a list or something to the same effect.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI just bought a new laptop which will be running SSD (Corsair 120GB) as the boot drive and would like to migrate my OS to the new system. One of my requirements is full-disk encryption. I work with proprietary client data and need to encrypt the new drive, its swap partition, everything except for /boot. I've read instructions for doing this from the alternate install CD, but my OS is disturbingly customized (started out as 10.04) and it would take months to rebuild everything. I keep remastersys (-dist) ISOs to ensure I don't have to go through that process, but the ubiquity installer does not appear to have the option of doing disk-level crypt during the installation process. I can boot the ISO into CLI, but don't know how to run the alternate installer from there.

I need to have it as simple as I can as most will be able to run the installer but many won't know too much more than that. I have 50 identical workstations that are being dropped shipped from the vendor directly to the remote locations. I need to install a identical configuration, including installed packages, scripts and customize configuration onto each of this workstations. I cannot set up a kickstart server to install from remotely because of my organizations security policies. Not to mention that it would be painfully slow. I thought about DD-ing my "Master" build and sending it to the remote sites, but some of the admins are not very Linux savvy. I would really like to build a bootable DVD that would install the cloned Master build from my server to theirs. I was looking for something that would look like Anaconda to the person installing the image. If I could get them through this base install I think it would be easy to document how to change the workstation unique parameters or value. How to accomplished this? BTW, this will be a RHEL 5.3 server install.

I've been running 6.0.2 amd64 stable since release day and recently have noticed my suspend and hibernate do not work. Normally I have transmission running and have set it to not enter sleep mode while torrents are active. However today I have not had transmission and was wanting to see if the sleep mode options would kick in. So I have set my display to "sleep when inactive for" 5 mins (this works perfect)
I have set "put computer to sleep when inactive for" 10 mins (this does not work at all)
When I try to manually test suspend my display flashes black for a few seconds but remains backlit, then asks me to log back in
When I manually go into hibernate mode my display turns off, pops back on for a second and in a terminal says something about a usb device (something failed but it happens so fast I cannot read it)
Recently I've been working intensively in my laptop (F12 x86_64) and so I usually only suspend it when I move between home and school, so I can continue working exactly where I left.
Alongside with a problem (now irrelevant given the context) of sluggish video performance after resuming from suspend (addressed in another thread), I've found another annoying problem involving sound (it embarrassed me in the library): after suspend I can no longer use headphones! Sure, I can have them on, but the laptop speakers play as well!
I tried several things in alsamixer and the only option was to entirely shut the volume down.
Of course I would hate to reboot the machine, besides I imagine it is a matter of restarting some service.
Is there a fix or at least a workaround for this sound issue without rebooting the machine?
How do I enable suspend in Lenny currently I can shut down or hibernate. In ubuntu on a different computer I can suspend which resumes very quickly can this work on Lenny also it does not hibernate properly anyway, there are error messages.

When I put my computer running Ubuntu 9.10 into suspend or hibernate the screen goes black with a little flashing underscore in the corner and when I try to bring the computer out of suspend or hibernate nothing happens and I am forced to manually reboot.

I've grasped at straws about why ever since, but I really don't think it's a software problem, because I've reinstalled my system (MEPIS) repeatedly. What sort of hardware failures could cause this? What should I be looking for? I notice that at boot, Linux always says "no resume image found," even if I left the system in suspension or hibernation. I can post parts of the dmesg if someone tells me what to look for; I can't display the whole thing because it's too long to fit here.

Intel i3 first gen m 330
4GB RAM
Intel (ironlake) graphics
First off, closing the lid to my laptop doesn't trigger suspend, or anything no matter what I set it to in power options.
I can suspend using "systemctl" or suspend from the "Leave" menu, but upon turning my computer back on, my touchpad and keyboard don't work.
Sometimes, my touchpad will start working after about 15 seconds, but the keyboard doesn't come back. I have to hard reset.
I have a feeling it's something to do with systemd, but I'm not super proficient in linux. Just an end user who is friendly with a terminal.
I have Debian Squeeze x64 on ThinkPad T61p with standard 2.6.32-5-amd64 kernel. thinkpad_acpi loaded as module, suspend to RAM works fine from menu in KDE as well as by closing the lid, however machine doesn't appear to react on pressing Fn+F4 which should put it to sleep as well. I've read through thinkpad_acpi documentation and asked Google but so far can't find the solution. Can anyone, point me in correct direction?

- What I need is to be able to either:press Fn+Esc or Fn+F1 to get the computer to suspend
Current situation:
- So last time I learned ACPI and HAL doesn't work nicely togheter
- My solution was to disable ACPI. (This gets things working, but not to my satisfaction)...
- Currently if I press Fn+F1 this calls: pm-hibernate This takes quite some time, and annoys me.
- I want to use: pm-suspend
- But I haven't figure out how...?
- If I configure power options through gnome-power-management and set the option to Suspend when I press Sleep...
I get the following behavior:
+ PC goes to Hibernate
+ When I Resume ("thaw"), this goes ok but..
+ PC goes back to hibernate automatically....
+ Need to resume to get it back up....
I've tried ubuntu, kubuntu, fedora and linux mint. all 64 bit versions. I've also tried to suspend through applications like acpitool. But nothing works. When I click on Suspend, the screen goes blank but the computer is still running. The wireless network adaptor gets disabled for a second and then comes back on. All I have to do is press a key and I get the unlock screen prompt. Basically, suspend works like 'Lock Screen'. I have a HP Pavillion laptop. Core 2 Duo @ 2 GHz and 4 GB RAM.
View 12 Replies View RelatedThe PC is a Toshiba laptop model# x205-s9359 running 11.2, KDE 4.3.5. Its video card is an nVidia 8700 GT. For two years now I've been plagued by random flashes, flickers and even missing scan lines on my screen when I use the nVidia drivers (up to and including 195.36.15), so lately I've been using the nv drivers. I miss the effects, etc. but I can live with that. At least I can get my work done, even if the display isn't as fancy as I'd like.
- When I run the nv drivers I can't suspend the PC to RAM or Disk. This means a lot of wasted time waiting for the machine to shut down and reboot every time I leave my desk for any length of time. If I try to suspend to RAM the only thing that happens is that the network connection disconnects then reconnects immediately. Here's the log file....
- If I try to suspend to Disk the PC appears to suspend as expected, but when it resumes it hangs before restarting X, and there's no keyboard or power button response. I have to use alt-prtsc-reisub to reboot. When the reboot is complete the screen shows all the windows, etc that were present before the suspend. Here's that log file....
-When I run the nVidia drivers the suspend/resume functions work perfectly, but I have to put up with all the problems described above. Here's the log file for Suspend to RAM with nVidia, and here's the one for Suspend to Disk.
I've spent hours searching for clues in these forums, on the openSUSE.org site in general, at KDE.org and with Google and I'm sorry to say that most of I've found is horribly out of date, and/or it's way over my head. or (worst of all) not even dated, so I've no idea whether it's current info relevant to my situation or so out of date that I might do real harm if I were to trust it. (RANT: Is it too hard to put a date on an article?... end of RANT) I'd be quite content to use the nv drivers if I could solve the power management issues, but I'd be equally happy to solve the flickering etc. with nVidia drivers.
My computer have ATI X600 graphics card installed, and I installed CentOS5.3.
Every time I suspend my computer and then resume it, it seem the graphics card can't resume and the monitor says 'no signal', but the system still responses, I can use keyboard.
Is there any configuration I can't do to make it resume normally? I've searched a lot in Google but can't find out any one else run into the same problem.

View 2 Replies View RelatedIf I suspend this toshiba satellite, and the battery is or gets low it will wake from suspend to tell me that it will need to suspend due to a critical low battery. Which is pretty dumb. I've experimented with this by plugging and unplugging the ac adapter.

Suspend "appears" to be working for me but not quite:1) the screen says "done" (3 lines of text) appear2) the screen never shuts down, nor does the "done" messages disappear3) it returns from suspend by both keyboard activity and the power button4) the pc doesn't go silent, some fans or something still making sound 5) the pc power light blinks indicating suspensionActually the pc doesn't really suspend as not only do fans run but the optical drives open and appear to read (based on blinking lights)In 11.3 suspending seemed to actually suspend and hitting the power seemed to bring it out of sleep but the monitor never came back on (indicator light displayed off color) so the suspend functionality was useless
