What are the benefits to upgrading to F15 from F14 if any? Has there been some huge step forward in performance, security or some other reason that makes it worth while to upgrade? I know many people make the move simply because they wish to have the latest and greatest, but is there any reason specifically to upgrade to the latest and greatest?

I see the major disadvantage to be that I wouldn't be able to just run what I want when I want. I don't see how much else could out weigh such a thing either.
I assume stability and compatibility and system resources are all very good reasons against it possibly. But really, at this stage in the game, with the speed of computers why not? Plus I haven't noticed too many, if any compatibility issues, it's all the same kernel right?

View 2 Replies View RelatedI have 3 cronjobs set up on my Unix server . Out of which 2 cron jobs run the same script but at different times and the other one runs another script.
So in the 2 jobs which are set to run PMDaily.sh for eg , One runs on Sunday at 8AM and the other runs monday to friday at 6 AM . How ever the Sunday cronjob works (runs through the crontab) but the Cron job set for Monday to Friday is not working. However manually if i run this script it workd perfectly.
Please let me know what could be the possible reasons for this?

It is most likely not a power related issue as I tried changing UPS/power sources, but no help!So my question is:Is there any log file where I can check which is causing the reboot? View 1 Replies View RelatedMy web server does not currently run Suexec. All files within the /var/www directory are owned by vsftpd and belong to nogroup. Apparently, this setup causes issues with some scripts that attempt to upload files and change files, such as the SMF Forum package.
Here's some background information that goes into further details regarding the issues I'm having:[URL]..Why would uploading a file using PHP in SMF not work with the owner being vsftpd belonging to the nogroup when the folder has been chmod to 777? I tested my own simple PHP upload script, and it was able to upload a file without issues. Yet, I've been told that my server is improperly configured if I'm not using Suexec. Why is this? Also, if I did use Suexec, what creates the users? Would I have to add them manually, or would they be created automatically as users based on their FTP login and added as subusers to the vsftpd group? Why should I use Suexec? I don't understand what's wrong with my current setup. How does it work in terms of users? Are users created and just added to a subgroup, or are they created like normal user accounts on the actual server? Do they get their own /home/username directory as well? I'm so confused about Suexec. What I've read about it doesn't make sense.[URL]..
My suspend-to-disk and suspend-to-RAM stopped working months ago. I've grasped at straws about why ever since, but I really don't think it's a software problem, because I've reinstalled my system (MEPIS) repeatedly. What sort of hardware failures could cause this? What should I be looking for? I notice that at boot, Linux always says "no resume image found," even if I left the system in suspension or hibernation. I can post parts of the dmesg if someone tells me what to look for; I can't display the whole thing because it's too long to fit here.
View 7 Replies View Related I've recently built a VM appliance using Ubuntu 8.04 that is given to customers for an easy deployment of our software. Ubuntu works great in a VM and its perfect for our software (which is a web application).
Some customers are paranoid (rightfully so) and they will run a vulnerability assessment on the web application. A particular customers' assessment fails as it finds that the appliance isn't running the latest version the Apache web server. I thought that just running "apt-get upgrade" would upgrade all of the software packages to the latest so that failures in the assessment caused by outdated software packages would be resolved... However this is not the case...
I realize that there is a probably a whole process for submitting/approving the latest versions of software packages in Ubuntu, that then get pushed to the repositories - But how does this work? What exactly does "apt-get upgrade" do if it doesnt upgrade packages to the latest?
For example: I need Apache 2.2.11 to fix a particular vulnerability. But when running apt-get upgrade, it doesnt actually upgrade the Apache version number (or any of the other packages). I'm stuck on Apache 2.2.8, and I can't find a .DEB installer for 2.2.11 or later.

I understand that since it's non-secure transmission hence We use Kerberos to authenticate. If we already used kerberos to authenticate i.e. it means that the username/password is not transmitted in clear text. Why we still need LDAP SSL? What is the benefit?
View 3 Replies View RelatedI was asking around in some IRC channels earlier trying to develop some thoughts on how NFS is better than CIFS. I set up a FreeNAS file server, and that's where all of my data now resides on a pair of raided drives. That way my main desktop, which is kind of a power hog gaming rig, can be powered off since I pretty much live on my laptop now. Anyway, I began to tinker with CIFS and NFS. Since some family members in the household use Windows, I definitely need CIFS. But I wanted to bounce back to NFS too and check it out.
While I do think it's nice I don't have to worry about authentication to the NAS box when using NFS, it's still a little scary. Being that it's more of a trust method instead of actual authentication, truthfully all a user needs to get into your data is the path to your NFS share and a matching UID. I mean, am I wrong by saying this? Sure, it may seem like NFS is convenient, but this angle of it is a little scary. I just don't feel like that screams "secure."
On the flip side, you have CIFS, which uses a user authentication level. So I hit my little shortcut to my NAS and it asks me who I am. I log in and bam, I have connection. I can browse other folders on the share, etc. This is convenient because I do have a "public" share on here with a generic user. That way if friends come over and want to transfer something to me, I have them drop it in the public share and I later transfer it accordingly. Since there is a user level authentication, this to me seems a little more secure.
Speed wise I was a little concerned, as some users have said NFS is faster than CIFS. Well, they might be right. But I did a few bench tests here on my laptop, using the same exact share except one with CIFS one with NFS. I stayed in the exact same location and transferred the same 300mb file in each instance.
NFS - 1.7mb/s
CIFS - 1.5/mb/s
Not exactly enough to warrant a huge argument over, so I leave that argument along the road to be forgot about since it doesn't really have any bearing on this situation. I like things about both NFS and CIFS. I just want to know why is it "not optimal" to use a full blown CIFS setup even if you're using 100% Linux systems.
I have set up UEC and have installed the store images. I have seen that we can create and run instances which are similar to virtual machines. We can utilize virtualization and create virtual machines and thereby fully utilize the server. Not sure what extra benefits or features can be achieved using cloud (say UEC). I suppose I am missing something. Kindly let me know how cloud adds more value than server virtualization.

The only RAID level supported on these cards is RAID 1. So, to the server, we have 148GB of space to deal with. They currently run 32-bit Ubuntu 8.10; I will be installing x64 Ubuntu 10.04.
I have always seen that it is best practice to partition in such a way that /boot, /var/log, /temp, and /home for example are separated out from /. Usually this is on a RAID5 or higher box. Is there any benefit to doing that sort of thing on a RAID1 box? I realize that this is in some ways a matter of opinion, but I would like the opinion of folks with experience. I'm pretty new to Linux in general.
The main services running on these boxes are Apache2, Tomcat6, MySQL, and Java.
I tried to upgrade from Fedora 8 to Fedora 12, but after preupgrade got everything ready I rebooted. Anaconda searched for storage devices and then said "No upgrade root found". What can i do to continue the upgrade manually?

I just updated my kernel to 2.6.34.7-56.fc13.x86_64 last night and now I have no system sounds. Audacious plays my mp3's just fine, just as all my multimedia works in my web browser, vlc, etc... The only thing being affected is system sounds. I tried playing a sample with aplay and I got loud, crackling nonsense and this output code...

sda1 and sdb1 ==> md0 raid1 for /boot
sda2 and sdb2 ==> md1 raid1 for swap
sda3 and sdb3 ==> md2 raid1 as physical volume then volume group and lvs on top ( / is a logial volume of these )
I wish to upgrade the current fedora 12 32bit installation I have on it doing a fresh install. But because I have a lot of data on md2 ( 600GB worth ) which I don't want to copy across somewhere else first, I need to know how ( i am pretty sure i can ) to mount md2 during the installation. This way I can use the data I already have on it.
