View 2 RepliesI have a laptop that has multiple partitions and was running Windows 7. I installed Fedora in a area of free space in the extended area, thus in a logical partition. Fedora is now running on the laptop. But, at boot time, there is NO BOOT MANAGER. The laptop just boots straight away to Fedora.
I know this has probably been covered, but is there an "official" procedure or document available to us newbies that I can use to recover my system such that it boots all of my installed bootable partitions (including Windows7)?
Windows 7 is first boot disk. Installed Fedora 13 on second disk from DVD. During installation it did not ask if I wanted dual boot. Fedora installed fine on second disk. Rebooted and only Windows will lood. How to setup to dual boot? Can I modify Windows Boot file? or do I have to install Grub on to sda. How do I do that?

I installed 10.04 and Grub won't boot into Windows7. I attempted to fix the problem through several different methods and nothing worked and I fear I made the booting problem worse than it was to begin with. I can boot into Ubuntu just fine, just not Windows7. Black screen with a cursor upper left hand. Windows7 repair disk does not help and using Windows7 command line repairs did nothing.
So here is an idea I came up with: Is there any way I can back up the Windows partition exactly the way it is, reinstall Windows7, and then somehow lay down all that information directly over the install to make it exactly like it was?
I doubt it is that simple, but is that possible? Like basically unhiding all the hidden files, copying them into a folder on my Ubuntu installation, reinstalling Windows7 and just copying them all back?
In other words, I somehow deleted the first partition of Windows7, the windows reserved system partition. WHat is the quickest way I can rescue this system? Client has been waiting for her machine a long time already, I have to delived today, no time to re-install windows7.

The silly thing is that I have 32bit Fedora 11 on it, 32 bit versions of all my installed software...etc., etc. Am I able at this point to salvage anything or is it best to just back up the home directory and then do a reinstall?
View 8 Replies View RelatedI've installed kmod-nvidia on my F12 system and now it doesn't boot anymore. I just receive a black screen with a blinking '_' on top of my screen immediately after i choose F12 in my grub menu. (I have a Nvidia 8800GT.)
I've tried to run the following command after the installation but it didn't work: [url]
mv /boot/initramfs-$(uname -r).img /boot/initramfs-$(uname -r)-nouveau.img
So I didn't blacklist nouveau or anything else. I just foolishly thought it was going to work.
Now I can't boot my system anymore. Is there any way to solve the problem? Or can I remove kmod-nvidia using a live cd? How?

This screen continues to come up. I tried to load Ubuntu with Wubi but it would not install... I have now installed it from a DVD but the load screen keeps putting me back to the screen above. I installed ubuntu on my dual boot system which had XP and Windows 7 installed, and after installing ubuntu I was able to boot windows 7 and ubuntu, but unable to boot XP it says some dll file is missing, now I think if try to repair xp with installation disk it might ruin my ubuntu.

Previously when i have dual booted win7 and ubuntu10 and linux mint i always get "grub rescue" when i try reinstall my linux partition, and it ends with i have to do clean reinstall of both windows and linux, which is a major pain in the rectum area
Is there a way to make my linux go back to original state without reinstall, and if i reinstall, how can I do this without loosing win7 partition and get this awful grub rescue message.
I have a laptop that has a dual boot of Windows7/Ubuntu10.04. Ubuntu loads fine, but Windows 7 does not. It shows up in the Grub, but it will not load. View 5 Replies View RelatedSo I decided to try something new and fresh. I wanted to try ubuntu. So I download the 64bit version from here. I made a 25GB partition. I then Wubi found out I didn't need the original file since it was downloading something else. I installed it, rebooted.
Windows comes up with a prompt:

Okay so a couple of days ago (before i had ever heard of Ubuntu, or even thought i could ever use Linux based software). I had been Dual-Booting OSX Snow Leopard and Windows 7, while using Chameleon boot-loader, on my HP Mini 311. Even though my sound-card and network adapter do not work while running Snow Leopard.

So i heard about the new Linux Os Ubuntu, and after trying it for about 3min on a USB i was sold. So i began to make my HP a triple-boot now with OSX Snow Leo, Windows 7, and Ubuntu.
I did this by recreating the same dual-boot system as before, but this time saving room for Ubuntu to be installed to my hard drive, after SnowLeo and Win7.
I got this to work perfectly by creating a 4th partition for Ubuntu and a 5th for swap area.
Here is where my problem lies... I saw this tutorial for dual-booting Win7 and Ubuntu, while making another partition so that windows and ubuntu can share the same files.

Once i tried doing this on my triple-boot(adding ubuntu partition, swap partition, and a "storage" partition, on top of the 3 partitions i created during dual-boot setup) My Windows 7 stopped booting. I read somewhere that hdds can only have like 3 primary partitions, which is the only kind of partition i know how to use. so i was thinking maybe i could put this storage partition in another mount location, such as /home or /usr, because i think the added partitions is what messed up my Windows 7 boot. My only problem is i have no idea what different mount positions are used for, nor how to use them properly.

I use a dual-boot setup with Windows7 installed in parallel to Fedora 15-x64. Whenever I had Windows in use and jjust reboot the system into Fedora, the NIC does not work as expected. Instead it goes in an endless "em1: link up" loop which results in very low bandwith or even complete network timeouts. This happens in Firefox as well as with yum or ping.

If I directly cold boot into Fedora (after the power cord has been removed and the system got completely re-initialized) there are no problems at alll and I get a fast and stable network conection. This also happens with other linux distributions, for example SysRescCD.
New install of Fedora 12 64-bit from DVD on an Optiplex 740 (AMD) with 8GB memory I had to use the mem= option to get the install past the EDD probe, but it seemed to install successfully. Now on boot it goes all the way through the "filling icon" progress meter, then switches to a completely black screen with an X pointer cursor that responds to mouse movement, but nothing else happens. Ctrl-Alt-F{2-5} do not switch to a console login, so the system's inaccessible.

The laptop runs win 7 64 bit so I'm trying to go with Fedora 64 but it will not boot. I first installed Fedora 12 64 bit from the DVD install and it would go to grub fine but when I boot the fedora os It just stops in the middle of the boot script. When it stops, the last 4 lines are:

I hadn't messed with it for a few weeks and yesterday I saw that 13 was out, so I downloaded and burnt the Fedora 13 64 bit CD. I popped it in, booted the computer and it did the same crap. It didn't stop at the same line but it was around a line with:

So I guess the kernel isn't loading properly or something. Do ya'll think I would be better off using the 32 bit?
I have a Asus EEE PC 1005HA netbook, which I use with Windows 7. I've been abroad for the last 2 weeks, and when I came back I found out my younger brother has installed Ubuntu on it.
When I asked him he told me it's no problem, and he didn't overwrite Windows, just installed on another partition.
However, I'm trying to get back to my original operating system and I have no idea how. Obviously, he has none either as he is just an impulsive 15 year old.
I'd like to either uninstall ubuntu and return to my windows OS, or just choose at boot time which OS I want to access (I don't really mind having a linux onboard, I assume it has it's merits).
I'm trying to install F11 on a machine that was running well under F10 just a few hours ago. I made some changes to the disk configuration, involving the addition of a dmraid-controllable fakeRAID card (SiL 3124 I think) and creating a RAID 0 array out of the two drives connected to the motherboard itself (Intel ICH7R). Otherwise the machine's configuration is identical to the way it was when running F10. My problem is thus: when I boot from the installation DVD (64-bit), the boot process doesn't make it even to anaconda. Here is the error I get, right after md devices are autoconfigured:

The SAP GUI errors when trying to connect and it looks like it wants 32bit. I found a doc saying to run the following which I have done but still not working.

i have a M1730 with 2 HD in RAID 0. Windows 7 64bit installed. I tried to install Ubuntu 10.10 with WUBI, all ok the installation in Windows. Restarted the system I have 2 multiboot options with the new Ubuntu... it starts but in graphic mode it tries to finish the installation and stops with an error message like that: "root filesystem not defined...".The problem is the raid0 of my disks or other?
View 5 Replies View RelatedI'm trying to get Rigs of Rods working on Fedora, but I've run into problems. RoR uses wxGTK development version 2.9, but Fedora only uses the stable 2.8. When I compiled and installed wxGTK and other RoR depencies not available with yum, some installed to /usr/local/lib and not the CMake expected location /usr/lib64 (LD_DEBUG=libs /home/user/ror-trunk/bin/rorconfig) I had to add "CMAKE_CXX_FLAGS:STRING=-ldl" to CMakeCache.txt to get RoR to compile, and tried adding "CMAKE_LIBRARY_PATH:PATH=/usr/local/lib" and "wxWidgets_LIBRARIES:PATH=/usr/local/lib" to try and fix

On booting, I got a bar across the foot of the screen (shades of blue, which then changed to white with Fedora 11 on RHS); then waited ... no change, no keyboard or mouse response.
Repeated the whole installation again - same result.
Then installed Fedora 9 and it booted OK; using Admin/Display showed a default CRT and XGI Volari Z7 video card.
