Fedora Installation :: F12 64bit On Optiplex 740 - Hang On First Boot After Install?
Feb 15, 2010
New install of Fedora 12 64-bit from DVD on an Optiplex 740 (AMD) with 8GB memory I had to use the mem= option to get the install past the EDD probe, but it seemed to install successfully. Now on boot it goes all the way through the "filling icon" progress meter, then switches to a completely black screen with an X pointer cursor that responds to mouse movement, but nothing else happens. Ctrl-Alt-F{2-5} do not switch to a console login, so the system's inaccessible.

I installed F11 x86 from the DVD onto one of my machines using a total of 4 partitions:
1. /boot
2. /
3. /home
4. swap
I then created an image of the first 3 partitions with fsarchiver and restored it onto a second machine (with different hardware). Grub was loaded onto the second machine as well without a problem. The new cloned install will get past grub fine but the kernel hangs. After removing 'rhgb quiet' from the boot options, I can see that the last message outputted to the console is something about the PS/2 mouse - this doesn't make sense as the mouse is working perfectly fine.
Additionally, I can still reboot using ctrl-alt-delete so the kernel/CPU must still be responsive. I have tried troubleshooting the various pieces of hardware, so I'm guessing it's something with the clone. All the cloned filesystems appear to be fully intact; the partition UUID's are all the same. I've even tried changing the UUID's both in grub and /etc/fstab to hardcoded /dev/sdaX , but this does not fix anything.

I have a Fedora 6 in DELL Optiplex 755. When I installed Fedora 8, I got the following error message:
"An unhandled exception has occurred. This is most likely a bug. Please
save a copy of the detailed exception and file a bug report against
anaconda at http://bugzilla.redhat.com"
This error message is from action of screen: "Installation requires
partitioning of your hard drive. By default, a partitioning layout is
chosen which is reasonable for most users. You can either choose to use
this or create your own."
I chose: "Remove Linux partitions on selected drives and create default
layout" or
I chose other options, but I still got same error message.
Then I switched to a new HHD, but I still got the same error message.

I have read all of the articles I could find on the problems. I am using the lilo bootloader as grub doesn't work. I have also added pci=nomsi to my lilo.conf and ran lilo -v. I can get the system to boot with kernel-2.6.18-8.el5. However I can't get the system to boot with kernel-2.6.18-194.11.3.el5.i686.rpm. When I boot with kernel-2.6.18-194.11.3.el5.i686 the system hangs after it prints bios data check successful. I tried adding suppress-boot-time-BIOS-data to my lilo.conf (I ran lilo -v after the change) and the system still hangs. The Optiplex 320 is running bios 1.1.12
Why won't newer kernels work? Is there a way to get more information to print before the hang to aid in debugging?

When attempting to install FC12 x86_64 on a Dell Optiplex 760, my USB devices stop working after initial boot. I see anaconda, but am unable to change anything since my keyboard, mouse and any other USB devices are not powering up after kernel boot.

I used to have FC11 installed with the nvidia supplied binary driver. Worked fine, very stable. Trying FC12 and FC13 live CDs caused a hang, so I stuck with FC11. FC14 live CD did boot so I backed up my own files and did a clean FC14 install. Upgraded to get kernel 2.6.35.6-48, installed the nvidia driver from RPMFusion (260.19.21) and had a working system! Now, after a cold boot, the kernel always hangs during boot. Tried a number of kernel boot option (apci=off, noapic and a few others too). The hang is not always at the same place. The earliest it has hung is after:Disabling lock debugging due to kernel taint
Sometimes its a few lines later at:NVRM: loading NVIDIA UNIX x86_64 Kernel Module 260.19.12 ...(which would seem to imply that the hang can even occur a step or two before the actual driver is loaded!)
Sometimes it keeps going for a few more seconds and randomly hangs during some other driver load.
Without a specific nvidia driver the system always boots ok, so I'm pretty sure its the nvidia driver but I just can't seem to get a handle on this in a reproducible way. Sometimes, when I have make some other change, it will boot and work ok, but a reboot locks it up again (for example, in case it was SELinux, I disabled it and on the next reboot it booted and worked ok. Then, next boot, it wasn't working again). When I make changes, I reboot using the previous kernel, make the changes and reboot, with an occasional success. Once I start rebooting using the latest kernel, it always hangs.
I'd love to get a solution to this, but even some advice on debugging this would be appreciated!
I'm using 8600GT, 256Mb, PCIe card in a MA69VM motherboard with 3Gb of RAM.

New to Linux and am wanting to install ubuntu 9.10 or 10.04 on a single separate 80gb drive. I have Windows installed on 2 80gb drives in Raid0 (nvidia controller) .I have installed 9.10 but Win7 will not load from the bootloader : gives me the error invalid signature. I've looked around and tried a few things to get it to load with no success.. is the Raid0 the issue?
If I try to install 10.04 it will hang and eventually errors out, I believe on the raid drive because it comes up with dev/mapper/nvidia_hhfbdccf1..

I'm a Dell Optiplex 380 MT Workstation user which have a Intel HDA Integrated sound controller. I was using Ubuntu 9.10 32 Bits Karmic, and all works fine, but, two days ago I did a fresh install to Ubuntu 10.4 LTS 32 Bits Lucid. In Ubuntu 9.10 I didn't do nothing to make work all features of my workstation, but, in 10.4 LTS the sound don't work. The hardware appear in "Speaker Icon" and in the alsamixer menu, but nothing works. It's happens in the Live CD, Installation in Hard Disc, 32 Bits Version and 64 Bits version.
Here is the output of the command, in Ubuntu 9.10 & Ubuntu 10.4. The only difference that I see is the follow in lspci (bold text):
lspci
Ubuntu 9.10: 00:1b.0 Audio device: Intel Corporation 82801G (ICH7 Family) High Definition Audio Controller (rev 01)
Ubuntu 10.4: 00:1b.0 Audio device: Intel Corporation N10/ICH 7 Family High Definition Audio Controller (rev 01)
At both version this is the which use (same output):
cat /proc/asound/card0/codec#0

I've installed linux-backports-modules-alsa-2.6.32-21-generic-pae, reboot system and nothing happens.

I'm currently stuck at the "lubuntu - Install lubuntu" screen on a Dell Optiplex GX150 (specs; Pentium III 1 GHz, 512 mb RAM, 20 GB HDD). I can hear the CD spinning up but nothing happens. Looking at the specs, the PC should be able to run lubuntu, right? Could somebody point me in the right direction? I've verified both the ISO and the CD checksum, both check out, so there should be no issue with the install media

I was finally able to install Fedora 11 x64 after choosing to only install packages from the repository on the install DVD. Prior to that when I had chosen tio install from the default online repositories, the install itself failed with a Python exception ( see my other post ). Now, however, once I boot after the install I eventually receive a kernel panic message, and failure. The exact same thing happened with CentOS 5.3 x64 after a flawless install. So unless someone knows what might be going on I will assume that Fedore, Red hat, and offshoots for x64 bit systems are just not for me. I have been able to successfully install the latest Mandriva and SUSE x64 Linux distros so whatever Red Hat/Fedora has done just does not work on my system.

I got a new laptop, this is the one: [URL] and decided that I wanted to go with Fedora instead of Ubuntu with this computer. The laptop runs win 7 64 bit so I'm trying to go with Fedora 64 but it will not boot. I first installed Fedora 12 64 bit from the DVD install and it would go to grub fine but when I boot the fedora os It just stops in the middle of the boot script. When it stops, the last 4 lines are:
kernel_init=0x1fd/0x257
child_rip+0xa/0x20
? kernel_init+0x0/0x257
? child_rip+0x0/x20
I hadn't messed with it for a few weeks and yesterday I saw that 13 was out, so I downloaded and burnt the Fedora 13 64 bit CD. I popped it in, booted the computer and it did the same crap. It didn't stop at the same line but it was around a line with:
? kernel_init
So I guess the kernel isn't loading properly or something. Do ya'll think I would be better off using the 32 bit?

I've down loaded the live CD for SUSE 11.3 and, using isohybrid and dd, I put the contents onto a USB stick and made it bootable. All good so far.
I then installed SUSE on one of the partitions on my hard disk (Windows is also on the disk). I set 4GB for SWAP, 16 GB for ROOT and the rest ~270 for /HOME.
I set the bootloader to be installed in the MBR.
The installation completed with no problems indicated.
I was asked to reboot and did so, removing the usb stick so that 11.3 would boot.
The reboot failed! I was presented with a black screen and nothing else happened.
I tried again, selecting openSUSE 11.3 from the boot menu. - Again a black screen shortly after pressing enter.
I can boot in Failsafe mode and then login with text prompt. I can't boot into runlevel 3 (same problem - black screen)
Does anyone know whether this is a problem with network configuration or graphics?
I have a notebook with ATI Radeon Mobility HD 5650 graphics card and
ATHEROS ar8132 ethernet controller.

I just finished installing CentOS 5.2 x86_64 on a Dell Dimension 3100 (Pentium 4 with 64-bit support). On the first boot, after completing the final config steps (firewall, SELinux, time server, etc), the boot hangs on "Starting xend:". I have completed a successful installation on another Dell machine (different processor), with the same installation options (I recorded all of the steps and followed them for the second installation).
My boot commands in grub are:
root (hd0,0)
kernel /xen.gz-2.6.18-128.el5
module /vmlinuz-2.6.18-128.el5xen ro root=LABEL=/1 rhgb quiet
module /initrd-2.6.18-128.el5xen.img

At the Eclipse.org site I have downloaded the eclipse-SDK-3.6.1-linux-gtk-x86_64.tar.gz is this the correct file I will need for my Fedora 12 (64bit) os? If yes, what is the command line I should use to do the install? I am also interested in any books/sites that might help me to get started.

I'll say up front I'm still new to Ubuntu, so if I've missed anything obvious please forgive me. I chose to upgrade my 9.10 installation to 10.04 via the update manager. Especially since I was going to be gone for long periods of time, this seemed like a good idea.
Downloading went fine, but I had to leave for a two day trip once I clicked install. When I returned, I noticed the machine was still on the purple loading screen with four dots. When I shut it down and rebooted, it got to the same screen. Pressing escape to show the text behind the screen showed two fails and one oddity:
(1) Setting sensors limits "Rather than invoking init scirpts through /etc/init.d, use the service( utility, e.g. service S49console-setup start
Since the script you are attempting to invoke has been converted to an upstart job, you may also use the start( utility, e.g. start S49console-setup start: Unkown job: S49consile-setup"
(2) Starting VirtualBox kernel modules No suitable module for running kernels found

I had to replace the motherboard, processor, memory on a machine because the old motherboard died. It worked fine under the old board but the new board (Gigabyte 880GA-UD3H) is causing Fedora 11 (and the Fedora 14 Live CD) to fail when initializing an Adaptec AHA-3940UW SCSI adapter.
I was able to display the boot messages and found that the first channel on the adapter is fine, but the second channel causes the boot to hang. The messages are:
aic7xxx 0000:05:04.0: PCI INT A -> GSI 21 (level, low) -> IRQ 21
scsi6 : Adaptec AIC7XXX EISA/VLB/PCI SCSI HBA DRIVER, Rev 7.0

Fedora hanging during boot when new drives are connected.
I'm running an FC12 install on a 750gig Samsung SATA drive. BIOS is set for drives to be AHCI
I've got 3 other identical 750's, two of which have never been used (as in never been written to). None of the drives have any jumpers set on them, as I've read that SATA handles that. At some point, all 4 drives were connected, and I had formatted one of the drives and backed some data up to it. But a reboot left me with FC hanging on load and the solution was to unplug all 3 other drives. I left it alone for a month.
Troubleshooting this weekend, I found with just my active drive and one of the untouched drives connected, FC still hangs. What I mean by hanging is that the blue background appears with the un-filled 'F' logo which filles diagnally under normal conditions. Mine will not begin to fill, and keyboard commands are not recognized.
It almost resembles a master/slave problem, but I thought that was gotten rid of with SATA. I tried setting the BIOS to use IDE-compatibility mode and set the order of the drives but the problem was the same, though I did not try any jumper arrangements.

i reached step six where it states "6. When the root and swap partitions are formatted the base installation will begin. Note that your system may appear to hang at different points during the install but it hasn't. Just be patient." I have been staring at a blank blue screen with this blinking cursor at the bottom for 30 minutes and i was just wondering how much more "patient" will it take. for some system details. the system is clean / fist time run and anything installed on it.

I'm attempting to install Kubuntu on a new laptop but seem to be having some strange issues. It's a Dell Latitude E5410 with 160GB HDD, 2GB RAM and Intel Core i5-520M(2.4GHz). I'm trying to install Kubuntu 10.10. When I restart the machine and boot from the CD for an initial install it seems to hang for a VERY long time. It will eventually get to the boot options (after hours) but seems sluggish. Once the install gets going everything seems decent except for that I can't seem to get it to finish. I know the CD is good since I used it to get Kubuntu on 2 desktops and another laptop in the last 48 hours. I've also burned another CD just to make sure. The checksum was spot on. Does anyone know what I can do to get this remedied?
