I booted F12 live cd with virtualbox and installed it on a USB stick(4GB). The installation was a success but, when I try to boot it, it doesn't work. Do I have to install the grup manually?

My webcam was working when I installed Fedora12. But now it doesn't work after about 2 months of playing with this OS. View 4 Replies View RelatedI've installed kmod-nvidia on my F12 system and now it doesn't boot anymore. I just receive a black screen with a blinking '_' on top of my screen immediately after i choose F12 in my grub menu. (I have a Nvidia 8800GT.)
I've tried to run the following command after the installation but it didn't work: [url]
mv /boot/initramfs-$(uname -r).img /boot/initramfs-$(uname -r)-nouveau.img
So I didn't blacklist nouveau or anything else. I just foolishly thought it was going to work.
Now I can't boot my system anymore. Is there any way to solve the problem? Or can I remove kmod-nvidia using a live cd? How?
iam new to linux i installed fedora 10 on windows7 ultimate 64bit after intallation the fedora system doesent boot, but windows7 work properly. i instlled fedora 10 in seperate fee partiotion

My computer currently has 2 hard Drives, In one I had windows xp installed and in the other one i had ( and have ) fedora 14.
None of them have been through any repartitioning ( except of course fedora 14 which automatically repartitions you hard drive, i think)
So today i downloaded Fedora 15 live iso and burnt it in a dvd, after booting up from the dvd i installed it to the hard drive where i had windows xp, i remember selecting the boot loader in that hard drive too, and then proceeded to install fedora 15.
After finishing the install, the system asked me to reboot, so i rebooted and quickly took out the cd. Next thing i know, my computer wouldnt get past the the screen where it tells you to press F2 for bios ( after this screen it would normally boot).
So I spent some time figuring it out, and realized that if i disconnected the hard drive with fedora 15 installed, i could boot with the other hard drive ( the one with Fedora 14) and acces my bios settings normally.
I tried booting up with only the Feodra 15 hard drive but it wont let me get past that screen or accessing my BIOS.
I have an HP Pavilion m7480n PC with Windows XP installed on the C-drive. I successfully installed FC 12 onto the spare USB drive. When I rebooted the PC all I got was a blinking underscore at the extreme upper left position of a totally black screen. After a bit of experimenting I found that if I hit the F1 key during the boot process, go into the BIOS setup, do nothing within the setup, and press ESC to get out of the setup then the PC will go back into the boot cycle a second time. During the second time however a small text message appears with words to the effect "Press any key to enter GRUB..." after which the GRUB splash screen comes up with the choice for FC 12 or "Other" (referring to Win XP). At that point I can boot into either one.
View 4 Replies View RelatedI have a RHEL Desktop and I added the rpmforge repo and yum installed VLC - the install itself run through without any problems, but when I try to start VLC, nothing happens. When I run a music or movie file and say open with VLC - nothing happens. I installed mplayer but it seems to have problems with playing streams and I'd prefer vlc anyway...I tried now several fresh installations using CentOS 5.2, RHEL Server 5.3 and RHEL Desktop 5.3 - same result .. VLC installs without being able to actually start it.

To give one example. I go to a web I use frequently and the following message is displayed at the top: "Additional plug-ins are required to display media on this page"
I click on "install mising plug-ins" and select Flash Player-installer. Bu then it tells me it's already installed! This has only happened since last night when I installed the updates!
I'm quite new to Linux and totally new to CentOS. I need it to isntall a Lotus Domino Server, and for security reason i'd like to install the Acronis Linux agent to backup this server with my Win Acronis enterprise server. I have installed a new CentOS server 5.4 on a Vmware virtual machine, then installed the Acronis Linux agent following the instruction here [URL].. The agent seems to work because with the command "/etc/init.d/acronis_agent status" the sistem respond with "Acronis Agenti is running"
But i can't connect to the agent from the server console!
I have disabled the firewall to avoid any connectin problem...
Does anybody use acronis with CentOS?

View 1 Replies View RelatedI've been a long time Windows user, but I've started a small firm and because of lack of funds, I've decided to install Ubuntu on my company's PCs.I have 8 PCs in total - 6 of them with Intel CPUs, and the last two with AMD CPUs. I bought the extra two computers because I've managed to find an extra two people to work at my company, and AMD-based PCs are cheaper so I've decided to buy them instead of Intel.Long-story short, I've installed Ubuntu 9.10 and boot time takes about half-an-hour. After the computers finally boot, USB hardware doesn't work at all. I was forced to buy PS/2 keyboards & mice and they both work fine after the PCs boot.I don't know what's causing this delay.I've enabled Cool 'n Quiet from BIOS.I've tried several instructions like editing the /etc/modules file.I've installed cpufreqd, tried to configure it, but it didn't work.I've check the CPU stats and my CPUs are running at 800MHz. I can't believe nobody managed to fix the 800MHz problem as I've noticed it's quite common among AMD Ubuntu users. I think I've tried almost anything that I've found on this forum.I can't keep asking my employees not to reboot their PCs. Both Chrome/Firefox crash a lot on Ubuntu so they're forced to restart their computers.The computer specs are: AMD Athlon II X2 240 dual-core @ 2.800MHz, 2GB RAM, 500GB HDD, etc.

I just installed a series of Ubuntu 9.10 updates, and after rebooting the machine, I can no longer connect via ethernet / lan to the internet. The connection manager just shows the spinning graphic showing the adapter is attempting to connect to the internet. I don't know which update caused it, and I'm not very good with linux. I was using network manager, and I believe that package was uploaded! Help, what should I do now? My Ubunutu is completely useless without a connection to the internet.

Keyboard works fine at power on. I can edit BIOS options. I put in the CD or DVD, it starts fine. Keyboard works for selecting boot options. Once the installation begins however, no more keyboard...

I recently installed debian on my ibook G4, but when I start up the computer, it doesn't boot into Xorg. When I tried to start Xorg, it says that it is not installed. How would I install it, and how would I start it? When I do the apt-get install xorg, it doesn't work. Right now I'm running ubuntu on it, but I really want just plain debian, as I really dont need all of the bells and whistles that Ubuntu offers. I just need something to do schoolwork on (I'm a highschool sophmore), and I don't want to use OS X for that as I like linux better (specifically debian and ubuntu).

I'm having a pretty serious problem, whenever I try to boot into Ubuntu the screen goes black, I see a flash of purple or violet and then i get a prompt asking for my login credentials, afterwards I'm stuck with a terminal trying to start the gui... View 1 Replies View RelatedWhat it does is, if you do something to change anything on the screen, for example, highlighting text, or switching from one tab/menu in an application to another. The screen doesn't show the change. The only way to SEE the change is to do something else to the screen, like grabbing and moving the application around, or scrolling the page of a website, etc. If you don't do that, you won't see what's really on the screen, but rather what WAS on the screen.
Another example:
*) say you have an application open with 3 tabs: tab1, tab2, and tab3.
*) Switch from tab1 to tab2 and you see no change on the screen.
*) Switch from tab2 to tab3 and you see tab 2 on the screen, NOT tab 3.
*) Switch from tab3 to tab 2 and you see tab3 on the screen, and NOT tab2.
Or, if you're typing in this box to make a post, and you hit ctrl+a to select all, you see no change. If you click in the box to deselect all, then it looks like you've selected all text still. The only way to see what's currently on the screen is to scroll the text box or page just a bit, or, if you're using an application, then you'd have to move it around on the screen a bit.
As i've said, the nVidia drivers are installed and working, as well as compiz, etc.

Also, i did BOTH the dracut thing, and the extra kernel paramter in the grub.conf. So, nouveau is blacklisted. Oddly enough though, i do NOT have this problem when using the nouveau driver...
Also, fwiw, i think that i should mention that i'm not using the "Desktop Settings > Enable Desktop Effects" method, because i always seem to have problems with getting certain features to work, like the background for the cube skydome, etc. How i do it is that i install a package called compiz-manager, and i have it set to run at session start. This makes all of the compiz features work fine. One thing that i've noticed though, is that on my other workstation, i haven't set that up yet, and it seems that is is NOT having the same issue. While compiz-manager was running, i tried to use the "desktop settings" method, and it crapped out and reverted back to the old school desktop. I then tried it again, and it reloaded compiz, and there is no screen update issues now. So it seems that you have to have both of them running in order to get all of the compiz options to work, and not have the screen refresh issue?
