Fedora Hardware :: Realtek RTL8111E - Dropped Packets In Windows7 / F15 Dual-boot?

Jul 6, 2011

my NIC drives me crazy and I need some help to gather all relevant informations to file a decent bug report. Maybe someone could guide me through this process.My mainboard is an AsRock Z68 Pro3

[URL]

I use a dual-boot setup with Windows7 installed in parallel to Fedora 15-x64. Whenever I had Windows in use and jjust reboot the system into Fedora, the NIC does not work as expected. Instead it goes in an endless "em1: link up" loop which results in very low bandwith or even complete network timeouts. This happens in Firefox as well as with yum or ping.

If I directly cold boot into Fedora (after the power cord has been removed and the system got completely re-initialized) there are no problems at alll and I get a fast and stable network conection. This also happens with other linux distributions, for example SysRescCD.

OpenSUSE Hardware :: Default Driver For Realtek RTL8111E Chip (Ethernet) Does Not Work

Jun 23, 2011

I just performed a fresh install of Suse 11.4. It worked great except that the network communication would cut in and out intermittently. I managed to solve the problem posting it here for other users and for future suse releases. I will give the hardware I am running, the symptoms and the fix:

Hardware
=======
Motherboard: Gigabyte GA-H67MA-UD2H-B3
Ethernet controller: Realtek RTL8111E
Default module: r8169 (run lsmod to see loaded modules)

[Code].....

1) First make sure that linux kernel source is installed in your system (yast software management)

2) ensure that gcc is installed (yast software management)

3) Download the latest linux driver for RTL8111E from the realtek website The one that I am running is the 8168 driver version 8.024.00

4) unzip the tarball (creates a directory called "r8168-x.xxx.xx")

5) As root run the autorun.sh from inside the newly created "r8168-x.xxx.xx" directory

Ubuntu Installation :: SSD With Windows7 Won't Dual Boot?

Jun 22, 2011

I built this computer with a Gigabyte motherboard, i3 processor, 8Gb ram, 64Gb SSD, and 1.5Tb HDD. Loaded Windows 7 to the SSD... repartitioned the drives and loaded Ubuntu 11.04.The start menu comes up to select Windows 7 or Ubuntu... when I select Ubuntu I get a screen which reads:Windows failed to start. A recent hardware or software change might be the cause. To Fix the problem:1. Insert your windows installation disc and restart your computer.2. Choose your language settings, and the click "Next"3. Click "Repair your computer."if you do not have this disc, contact your sys admin or manufacturer for assistance. File: ubuntuwinbootwubildr.mbrStatus: 0xc0000098Info: The selected entry could not be loaded because the application is missing or corrupt.

This screen continues to come up. I tried to load Ubuntu with Wubi but it would not install... I have now installed it from a DVD but the load screen keeps putting me back to the screen above. I can't load from the Windows CD it won't recognize it even if I change the bios setting.Windows 7 seems to be running fine... and Ubuntu seems to have loaded fine... so how can I get my Windows boot screen to go and load Ubuntu as my OS?

Networking :: Dropped Packets But Only For TCP Connections?

Oct 1, 2010

One of our RHEL 5.3 servers has trouble about 30% of the time with TCP-based communications, but it does not seem to be firewall issues. From another computer on the same switch, you can SSH to the server sometimes and other times the SSH command will just hang. When it hangs, you can often just Ctrl+C and try it again and it works. Same with HTTP connections. You'll get part of a web page and then FireFox will just hang waiting for the rest and eventually time out. Same goes for communication initiated FROM the server. SSH'ing from the server to any outside server or connecting to any web site works sometimes, but most times not. iptables if off. No other firewalls are running. Tcpdump shows communication gets so far and then stops. It does not matter whether tou run tcpdump on that server or the client connecting to it. Either way you see the connection stops working. MEANWHILE, pinging with small or large packets works flawlessly. 10,000 packets, zero drops.

Networking :: Dropped Packets On Firewall

Jan 11, 2010

I've recently installed Ubunter 9.10 Server Edition to use as a NAT firewall for the lab I run. I'm using iptables to do NAT forwarding and everything works great except that, occasionally, connections seem to break. Ssh connections close with "Connection reset by peer" and HTTP connections just stall out.I believe this has to do with the firewall's internal network interface occasionally dropping packets.

Ubuntu :: New Dual-boot But Cannot Load Windows7(grub)?

Apr 12, 2011

Finally made the switch over to ubuntu, but I needed to keep my windows7 for several reasons. Let just start by saying I have two hard drives, a 200gig(which holds my windows7 partition) and a 500gig(has a 100gig partition which has ubuntu on it). After finally getting 10.04 to install on the 100gig partition and everything running right, I tried to load up windows7 and got an error.

Something along to lines of "the partition does not exist". I believe I messed up on the last step on the install, as I might of just been careless. I remember reading somewhere that if using multiple hard drives grub may get messed up in one way or another. IS there a way to fix this and make grub realize that window7 is on another partition, or am I out of luck?edit: Id like to add that grub is recognizing windows7, it just will not load off the other partition(I think)

Networking :: Packets Go Out One Tunnel / Come Back Another / Then Are Dropped

Dec 5, 2010

I've run into a of a routing issue pertaining to packets leaving a firewall, traversing and IPSec tunnel, hitting the target and then returning via a different tunnel, finally arriving back on the source firewall but on a different interface from where it started. Once the packet has returned to the firewall it is dropped I've been unable to discover the reason for the drop. Two sides to the system, Firewall A and Firewall B. Each firewall provides the default gateway to its respective side and offers a backup IPSec tunnel to the high capacity tunnel handled internally. The Layer 3 Switch uses OSPF and takes care of the bulk of the behind the scenes routing between the sides. In case of failure the Layer 3 switches direct traffic to use the Firewall tunnels to route traffic.

Networking :: TCP Packets Seem To Be Dropped On Debian Squeeze W/NAT?

I'm running a Debian Squeeze 6.0.1a box that's connected to my ISP via an L2TP connection that's managed by OpenL2TPD. The box is configured to perform NAT from local clients (on eth0) to the internet (on ppp0).

However, I'm having an issue with TCP packets that are sent from the box itself to the internet (packets originally coming from the local clients get sent and received over the internet just fine)

I'm using this Python app to test this:

Code:

s = socket.socket(socket.AF_INET, socket.SOCK_STREAM)
s.bind(('', 5003))

General :: Netem For Mac OS X To Emulate Network Latency And Dropped Packets?

Aug 9, 2010

I'm looking for an open source/free network emulator tool that I could use on Mac OS X, to simulate a slow network connection, limited bandwidth and other network characteristics such as dropped packets etc for both UDP/TCP connections (or even on the physical layer).

I'm looking for the simplest solution that would allow me to run TCP/UDP servers and have a few clients connect to them on localhost emulating various network connections. I'm mainly wondering if I can use something like Linux's netem on Mac OS X (or even better cross-platform Windows/Linux/Mac). Perhaps I can run VirtualBox and a Linux kernel running netem, has anyone had luck with that?[URL]...

General :: Unexplained Log Cruft And Possible Dropped Packets On WPA2-Personal LAN

Sep 12, 2010

I've been receiving a LOT of log cruft ever since I installed my WUSB100V2 (using the rt2870sta community driver from the Linux kernel) and was wondering what it all meant.

Many times when these messages occur it is accompanied by slow network speeds and many DNS queries and outgoing SYNs being dropped. I have searched for documentation for these (error?) messages and have come up empty as far as what they mean or how I can stop them from occurring.

I reside on the opposite side of the building from my WAP. I have taken steps to improve the signal strength, but the signal quality hovers between 50% and 70%, sometimes dropping to 40% for unknown reasons.

This card was working perfectly fine up until....an hour ago and it started doing this. My iptables isn't blocking it somehow, because I didn't change anything. I tried reverting to an older kernel and that didn't help. It's not the network cable, it works fine in any other card. Also, the dropped packets seem to count down? It seems to go down by exactly one every time I run ifconfig, no matter the length of time in between running it.

Networking :: See The Number Of Packets Dropped By Kernel Due To Insufficient Queue Size?

Sep 15, 2010

As is known, there is a queue lies between the kernel subsystem and the network driver for incoming data. And if data come when this queue has no space for it, the data got dropped by kernel. Is there some way to see how many packets are dropped due to this buff penury? I tried netstat -s but could not find something useful. On the other hand, I found this 12176 packets collapsed in receive queue due to low socket buffer from netstat -s. I think this is something related to the per-socket buffer, but not the incoming queue between the network driver and kernel. Is this right?

Fedora Installation :: Boot Windows7 After Install 12

I know this has probably been covered, but is there an "official" procedure or document available to us newbies that I can use to recover my system such that it boots all of my installed bootable partitions (including Windows7)?

Slackware :: Take Current Windows7 (x64) Setup And Make It Into A Dual-boot Setup With Slackware 13.0?

Jan 24, 2010

I'm trying to take my current windows7 (x64) setup and make it into a dual-boot setup with slackware 13.0 (x32) and am hitting a brickwall. I guess I would like to know if I can salvage the situation without formating my windows drive. I fully intend to, but I had hoped to not do it this month. I'd like to get dual boot going so I can master it and acquire all the files/drivers I'll want and then format and do it 100% right next time.

Currently I have windows setup on a 3x 500gb Raid0 onboard array which itself has been flawless. After I shrunk my current partition size to give me about 25gb of free space I proceeded to setup Linux, and I was unable to perform the cfdisk portion for partitioning the array for Linux.

I tried using cfdisk:
/dev/hdx (a1-a3,b1-b3)
/dev/sdx (a1-a3,b1-b3)

I even attempted to locate with: cat proc/partition and tried using cfdisk on every device it located. It always said it was either an unknown partition table and should I start at zero, or bad partition. I was of course too concerned over my windows setup (which has almost 1tb of stuff I have not backed up) to go any further into the unknown.

PS: I have used Slackware before, back at 8.1, 10, and even a very brief interlude at 12.0, this is my first attempt on this computer however with 13.0, it is currently running fine on my laptop and my PS3 (Laptop is even dual booting 7/Slack13. Albeit without raid)

Ubuntu :: Triple Boot/Windows7/WindowsXP ?

Jan 2, 2011

I have been running dual boot Windows XP and Slackware for years but I recently changed things up a bit a "broke" something.

Windows XP is on it's own 250GB HDD. I installed Windows 7 on a seperate 74GB HDD but it appears that it installed the bootloader over top of the Windows XP bootloader on the 250GB HDD. Both OS's booted fine and that point. Then I partitioned the 250GB HDD into 150GB and 100GB leaving me 100GB to install Ubuntu. I told Ubuntu to stick it's bootloader on the 250GB HDD thinking everything would work like magic although there appears to have been a little bit too much magic. Normally Slackware will allow you to manually edit your Lilo config file during installation and add all your OS's but this didn't happen with the Ubuntu install.

After the install there were 5 options in the bootloader menu (at this point I am not even sure what bootloader it was using). Ubuntu, Ubuntu ("safe mode?"), memtest, more memtest, and Windows 7 (bootloader? it wasn't just called windows 7 but something like Windows 7 bootloader, I have only booted once and I am writing this from Ubuntu right now). I tried selecting Windows 7 at that point hoping that it would bring me to the Windows bootloader which would allow me to select from Windows 7 and Windows XP but the screen just went blank for a second or two and then sent me back to the same screen I was just at.

So a quick Google of Ubuntu bootloader led me to believe I was using Grub and I needed to look for the /boot/grub/menu.lst file and edit that but the file wasn't there. Then I tried running grub but I was informed it wasn't even installed. I thought maybe I would have better luck with Lilo but that wasn't installed either. So I installed Lilo and ran liloconfig but I was told that fstab gave a UUID that led Lilo to belive I wasn't using an ordinary block device and I should go fix that and come back afterwards. In fact the only thing in fstab was the ext4 partition with Ubuntu and the swap partition even though I have 4 sata drives installed with 6 separate partitions.

At this point I am pretty lost. Most of my Linux work is done in Parallels now on a Macbook so I haven't had to mess with the bootloader in years and when I did it was all on Slackware which to me is set up quite a bit differently than Ubuntu. I would be pretty sick if I screwed up and took out 3 OS's with it.

How Grub will handle booting both Windows OS's when Windows appears to be doing it with one bootloader.
