Ubuntu :: Installed After Windows7 - Can't Return To Windows 7

Oct 16, 2010

I have a Asus EEE PC 1005HA netbook, which I use with Windows 7. I've been abroad for the last 2 weeks, and when I came back I found out my younger brother has installed Ubuntu on it.

When I asked him he told me it's no problem, and he didn't overwrite Windows, just installed on another partition.

However, I'm trying to get back to my original operating system and I have no idea how. Obviously, he has none either as he is just an impulsive 15 year old.

I'd like to either uninstall ubuntu and return to my windows OS, or just choose at boot time which OS I want to access (I don't really mind having a linux onboard, I assume it has it's merits).

Ubuntu Installation :: Fix Non Booting Windows7 Partition After I Installed 10.04?

Apr 17, 2010

I installed 10.04 and Grub won't boot into Windows7. I attempted to fix the problem through several different methods and nothing worked and I fear I made the booting problem worse than it was to begin with. I can boot into Ubuntu just fine, just not Windows7. Black screen with a cursor upper left hand. Windows7 repair disk does not help and using Windows7 command line repairs did nothing.

So here is an idea I came up with: Is there any way I can back up the Windows partition exactly the way it is, reinstall Windows7, and then somehow lay down all that information directly over the install to make it exactly like it was?

I doubt it is that simple, but is that possible? Like basically unhiding all the hidden files, copying them into a folder on my Ubuntu installation, reinstalling Windows7 and just copying them all back?

General :: Windows - Preserve Diacritics When Cross-mounting Drives To Windows7

Sep 5, 2011

A friend backed up an in accessible Windows 7 partition to a big (close to 1TB) external USB drive using KNOPIX. Unfortunately the umlauts and accents in the file names of his extensive music collection now appear garbled (UTF8 vs ISO xxx, I guess) when he accesses that drive from Windows. My guess is he needs to mount the two drives in a 'special way,' that takes the diacritics translation into account, on KNOPIX? Or do you have another idea what went wrong? This is the second part of a windows/linux problem I'm having. See how-does-one-mount-a-partition-in-windows-7 for the other part

Ubuntu :: Hibernate For A Brief Trip To Windows And Return?

Nov 22, 2010

First of all, I searched the forums but I couldn't find anything- I don't want to be the poster who posts something that's been solved 14 times already Anyway, primary question first and then "why" below- I was wondering if there was a quick way to hibernate Ubuntu to Swap -> boot to Windows 7 and work -> Hibernate Windows 7 -> boot to Ubuntu and work, repeat until Windows glitches

I have, new Acer Aspire:
i3 370M
4GB RAM
640GB HDD as follows, from inside to outside:
X GB 3 Primary Windows partitions, 125 GB unnallocated, 50GB /home, 6 GB .boot, 4 GB SWAP

Ok, why would I want to do that? I ask because while Ubuntu boots fast at just under 1 minute at the end of my hard drive (90Mbps, I had it install from "end" when I partitioned the boot file), Windows boots slowly at about 2.5 minutes on the inside of my drive (23sh Mbps). To be able to switch between them would be useful for iTunes, ProEngineer, Matlab, and other stuff that is Windows based. Windows boots much faster from hibernation. I love Ubuntu, the speed and simplicity and the actual FRIENDLY atmosphere (what a concept WINDOWS) But I find myself needing to do some quick editing in Windows, then I can go back to my business on Ubuntu. Is there some kind of selective boot managing like GRUB that I can bring up after telling one to hibernate? Because once on SWAP, it should hold relatively indefinitely until I return, right??

Any ideas??? It sounds like some clever Terminal coding could manage the Linux side of the booting, but Windows might have to be tricked into a selective boot..

Ubuntu :: Bash Script - Removing Windows Return Characters

Sep 1, 2010

I've got a basic script, which parses data from a text file and performs actions based on that data. Here is my code:

Code:
dsrc="/home/russellm/sites/"
ddst="/home/russellm/othersites/"
while read SiteID
do
if [[ ! -d "$ddst${SiteID:0:1}" ]]
then
mkdir "$ddst${SiteID:0:1}"
fi
mv "$dsrc${SiteID:0:1}/${SiteID%*}" "$ddst${SiteID:0:1}/" | tr -d '
' done < sites.txt

The text file came from a windows system, and contains those return characters (). I 'could' just run the whole thing through tr and then run the script on the new data file, but I'm looking for a more elegant solution. As the code above shows, I'm trying to pipe the mv command though tr in order to remove the return character - but it's not working. I can't get this to work with sed either, so I know I'm doing something wrong. I also tried to remove it using ${SiteID%} - but that also failed. The characters don't show up in an echo, just when executing a command.

Output example (emphasis mine):
Code:
mv: cannot stat `/home/russellm/sites/B/B23467324
': No such file or directory
I'm tempted to just convert the file once and call it a day, but you know what it's like. To be honest, I'm starting to suspect that there are no return characters, and that I'm going about this wrong.

Ive been running windows 7/Ubuntu dualboot for some years now and never had any problems.Some months ago I got a new Patriot Inferno ssd. Ofc the first thing I did was to installl windows 7, it had no problems, ran fast and smooth. Then when I reinstalled grub I started to get error when trying to start windows, the logo never apeared and all I got was the message "Windows failed to start. A recent hardware or software"Status: 0x00.00F" "Info: The boot selection failed because a required device was inaccessible.". It does not matter what order I install windows and ubuntu in, or how many times Ive tried to reinstall grub. Windows 7 will not work while I have grub/windows installed. Right now Ive got them installed on separate drives, ubuntu on the ssd and windows on a partition on a 1tb hdd. Unfortunately I need to have windows for .net programing and gaming..

I have complete admin rights to my desktop. After over an hour of dowloading I keep getting message "Permission denied" and it refers me to the log file.

The last few lines of the log files states:

How else can I fix this. Bearing in mind I cannot log into my Ubuntu system.

Currently i have TightVNC viewer and Putty installed on my Windows machine. i use Putty to log into Ubuntu and start VNC server (i think its X11). I then start VNC viewer on the windows machine and log into Ubuntu as normal, however this is really slow and it takes a long time to refresh.

My local network is connected to the internet so i want to be sure that this is all secure even thought my router has a firewall.

Ubuntu :: Partitioning For Dualboot With Windows7?

Mar 4, 2011

I've got a new box (i.e. I can blow away everything on it) with

CPU=Atom 330
nVidia GeForce 9400M
4 GB RAM
single drive, single partition=250 GB
Ubuntu 10.10 installed

The box will primarily be used for ubuntu, but my GF also wants to stream Netflix on it. (I have not been able to sell her on the Amazon Instant Video--yet, anyway.) Since Netflix doesn't run on Linux, I need to install a Windows or OSX. I have media for w7 and wXP. I'm planning to install w7 on it, just because that's newer. Is there a reason to install wXP instead for this usecase?

Given w7, I can choose to dualboot or virtualize. I'm told the Atom doesn't virtualize well, so I'm planning to dualboot. I'm told that, when dualbooting linux and windows, one wants to partition first, then install windows, then install linux, so I'm planning to do that.

how to partition for this? My plan is currently to make 5 partitions: 2 primary partitions (one for each OS) and 1 extended partition (to hold linux swap and the homes for w7 and ubuntu)

Code:

primary partitions:
system (c:) for w7 = 20 GB
root for ubuntu = 20 GB
extended partition:

Ubuntu :: Windows Crashes Since Installed It

Jul 23, 2011

want to say that I was a windows user just about a week ago. Then I installed ubuntu on a USB flash drive, just for fun, and now it's installed as main OS on my laptop and the only thing I use windows for is syncing my iPod touch with iTunes. (Yes, I know about other possibilities to copy music to it from ubuntu, but I want to continue using iTunes.)

Now my main problem is that since I installed ubuntu (10.10 Maverick Meerkat), my windows (Windows 7 Home Premium 32 Bit) sometimes crashes during startup. Sometimes it boots up perfectly normal, then in some cases it crashes at the first attempt to boot and when I retry and choose "Start Windows normally" it works just fine and then there are the times when it crashes everytime I try to boot. I wasn't able to find out why it sometimes works and sometimes doesn't. I also removed all USB devices during startup but that didn't change it.I noticed that when I start Windows in safe mode first, it works, then I restart and choose normal mode and it works too.Has anybody experienced this issue and/or knows a way to fix it? It's just annoying to have to try several times just to be able to keep my iPod synced.

Ubuntu :: Installed, Now Windows Won't Boot?

Mar 11, 2010

I already had Windows XP on the HDD. I installed Xubuntu 9.10, and used the installer to cut out a 10 GB chunk for Xubuntu. Xubuntu boots correctly, but I only get a blinking cursor _ when I attempt to boot Windows. I'm pretty much a newbie with Linux, although I did take a while to play around with the Live CD before installing - so I generally know where things are, but know very little about what is actually going on behind the scenes.Can anyone give me some advice for what steps I need to take to remedy this? The goal is to be able to boot whichever OS I need at the time.Also - I'm sure that my old stuff is all on the HDD - I can access it, but strangely enough, I seem to need to try to open that file system with like Firefox or something - it tells me I need to mount it, I mount it, then it becomes accessible..
