Ubuntu Security :: Can Be Hacked When It Is Installed As A Dual Boot With Windows7

Apr 13, 2010

I need to know whether Ubuntu can be hacked when it is installed as a dual boot with W7 by hacking windows and getting access to the Ubuntu partition?

What I would also like to know if this way can be used to put a key logger or screen capture in Ubuntu which installs next time Ubuntu is started?

Ubuntu Installation :: SSD With Windows7 Won't Dual Boot?

Jun 22, 2011

I built this computer with a Gigabyte motherboard, i3 processor, 8Gb ram, 64Gb SSD, and 1.5Tb HDD. Loaded Windows 7 to the SSD... repartitioned the drives and loaded Ubuntu 11.04.The start menu comes up to select Windows 7 or Ubuntu... when I select Ubuntu I get a screen which reads:Windows failed to start. A recent hardware or software change might be the cause. To Fix the problem:1. Insert your windows installation disc and restart your computer.2. Choose your language settings, and the click "Next"3. Click "Repair your computer."if you do not have this disc, contact your sys admin or manufacturer for assistance. File: ubuntuwinbootwubildr.mbrStatus: 0xc0000098Info: The selected entry could not be loaded because the application is missing or corrupt.

This screen continues to come up. I tried to load Ubuntu with Wubi but it would not install... I have now installed it from a DVD but the load screen keeps putting me back to the screen above. I can't load from the Windows CD it won't recognize it even if I change the bios setting.Windows 7 seems to be running fine... and Ubuntu seems to have loaded fine... so how can I get my Windows boot screen to go and load Ubuntu as my OS?

Ubuntu :: New Dual-boot But Cannot Load Windows7(grub)?

Apr 12, 2011

Finally made the switch over to ubuntu, but I needed to keep my windows7 for several reasons. Let just start by saying I have two hard drives, a 200gig(which holds my windows7 partition) and a 500gig(has a 100gig partition which has ubuntu on it). After finally getting 10.04 to install on the 100gig partition and everything running right, I tried to load up windows7 and got an error.

Something along to lines of "the partition does not exist". I believe I messed up on the last step on the install, as I might of just been careless. I remember reading somewhere that if using multiple hard drives grub may get messed up in one way or another. IS there a way to fix this and make grub realize that window7 is on another partition, or am I out of luck?edit: Id like to add that grub is recognizing windows7, it just will not load off the other partition(I think)

Fedora Hardware :: Realtek RTL8111E - Dropped Packets In Windows7 / F15 Dual-boot?

Jul 6, 2011

my NIC drives me crazy and I need some help to gather all relevant informations to file a decent bug report. Maybe someone could guide me through this process. My mainboard is an AsRock Z68 Pro3

[URL]

I use a dual-boot setup with Windows7 installed in parallel to Fedora 15-x64. Whenever I had Windows in use and jjust reboot the system into Fedora, the NIC does not work as expected. Instead it goes in an endless "em1: link up" loop which results in very low bandwith or even complete network timeouts. This happens in Firefox as well as with yum or ping.

If I directly cold boot into Fedora (after the power cord has been removed and the system got completely re-initialized) there are no problems at alll and I get a fast and stable network conection. This also happens with other linux distributions, for example SysRescCD.

Ubuntu Security :: System Hacked / What's Going On?

Jan 3, 2011

I have a 6yo laptop...z60m. Solid little thing that I knocked around so much the hinge broke. My dad jerryrigged it so it can stay open.

So now I use it as a glorified DVD player. Then, around February the hard drive died. I put it in fresh, loaded a couple of regular games and the DVD modifications to play DVD's. So, besides the basic upgrade to 9.1 not much as been done.

Well, last week my panel disappeared. I procrastinated and last night I got on the computer. I did F2 and "xfce-panel" and my panel reappeared exactly how I'd last tweaked it.

With on exception. This blue globe, "Akonadi" had mysteriously appeared.

Thing is that I haven't installed or updated anything for 8 months...why? becuase I haven't had this thing connected to the Internet. The wireless tower has been on. (my bad) but all of the signigals in my neck of the wood are encripted so I just let it be.

I don't know where this program came from. Is it loaded in xubuntu? Why would it show up? And furthermore if there was someone with malicious intent (unfortunatly I do have to take that into consideration) have put this on for data collection?

Ubuntu Security :: Warning Signs Of Having Been Hacked

I had a serious breach of the cellular segment of my communications network this week. All I can say is nobody got hurt. The attackers also knew where to find me via email. I'm concerned that perhaps they've penetrated this aspect of my system as well, although they seemed pretty specifically focused on the phone. There have been no changes on anything on my computer, and of course, I went ahead and changed all the passwords. How can I verify or at least look into the possibility of having been hacked as well.

Ubuntu Security :: Computer Has Been Hacked / Monitored?

Mar 22, 2011

my computer has been surely hacked for at least more than two months; my private information are being hacked and spread around! I initally used Windows Vista and I had the firewall off and no antivirus software. When I realized that my OS had been hacked, I began turning my firewall on and installing security softwares, but nothing stopped the hack.

Yesterday, I erased all my partitions and installed Ubuntu 10.10. I installed rkhunter and a firewall. I changed my static IP adress, at least for the sake of knowledge, to another one, then I got disconnected since my router only allows my old IP.

When I'm about to write my admin password, I disconnect from the network. I've scanned my system using rkhunter, and the result is a list of 30 suspicious files!

Can I adjust my router in a way that it can allow any IP adress? If yes, can I have a non-static IP adress? How to prevent the hacking in the first place? However, I believe, I don't know yet, that my Ubuntu has also been hacked...

If I can't get rid of the hacker(s), then I should permanently disconnect from internet and find another way to receive information anonymously through the internet.

Security :: The Server Was Hacked From So Called Tor IP Address?

Nov 14, 2010

I always use professional services to secure my servers. Everything was fine for years but a week ago my server got hacked.I don't know how the hacker got my username/password - it was not something like admin, password.9 months ago my PC was infected with some virus which connected to the FTP server by using password which was saved in CuteFTP and infected all index files with some javascript. Then I changed the user/FTP password and didn't save it anymore in Cute FTP. Of course, I checked all the folders and re-uploaded all infected files. Is it possible that this virus uploaded some hidden file which was able to get the new password for this account?

The server was hacked from so called Tor IP address. I am tiref of worrying about server security and now have an idea to get a static IP address from my ISP and to allow logins only from this IP address. What do you think about it? This idea looks good for me but are there any risks to lose access to the server. Can ISP provider change the static IP address for some reason?

Ubuntu Security :: Server Hacked - Ethernet No Longer Working

Jun 19, 2010

My server (Ubuntu 10.04 desktop) was hacked. I had my ethernet plugged in to an Intel 82557 Ethernet Pro card (Pulse) when my server was first attacked. After it was attacked I reinstalled the system but my ethernet card still would not work. Ubuntu recognized it, but it is continually disconnected and the little status lights on the card do not light up anymore.

So then I plugged the ethernet to the mother board itself. Well, my server was hacked again and now the ethernet on the motherboard does not work. Again, Ubuntu (after a reinstall) recognizes the hardware but nothing happens when I plug the etherent in. The motherboard is a BioStar P4M900 VIA chipset. I have a few of the system logs here [URL] which I saved right after the first attack.

Ubuntu :: Installed After Windows7 - Can't Return To Windows 7

Oct 16, 2010

I have a Asus EEE PC 1005HA netbook, which I use with Windows 7. I've been abroad for the last 2 weeks, and when I came back I found out my younger brother has installed Ubuntu on it.

When I asked him he told me it's no problem, and he didn't overwrite Windows, just installed on another partition.

However, I'm trying to get back to my original operating system and I have no idea how. Obviously, he has none either as he is just an impulsive 15 year old.

I'd like to either uninstall ubuntu and return to my windows OS, or just choose at boot time which OS I want to access (I don't really mind having a linux onboard, I assume it has it's merits).

Slackware :: Take Current Windows7 (x64) Setup And Make It Into A Dual-boot Setup With Slackware 13.0?

Jan 24, 2010

I'm trying to take my current windows7 (x64) setup and make it into a dual-boot setup with slackware 13.0 (x32) and am hitting a brickwall. I guess I would like to know if I can salvage the situation without formating my windows drive. I fully intend to, but I had hoped to not do it this month. I'd like to get dual boot going so I can master it and acquire all the files/drivers I'll want and then format and do it 100% right next time.

Currently I have windows setup on a 3x 500gb Raid0 onboard array which itself has been flawless. After I shrunk my current partition size to give me about 25gb of free space I proceeded to setup Linux, and I was unable to perform the cfdisk portion for partitioning the array for Linux.

I tried using cfdisk:
/dev/hdx (a1-a3,b1-b3)
/dev/sdx (a1-a3,b1-b3)

I even attempted to locate with: cat proc/partition and tried using cfdisk on every device it located. It always said it was either an unknown partition table and should I start at zero, or bad partition. I was of course too concerned over my windows setup (which has almost 1tb of stuff I have not backed up) to go any further into the unknown.

PS: I have used Slackware before, back at 8.1, 10, and even a very brief interlude at 12.0, this is my first attempt on this computer however with 13.0, it is currently running fine on my laptop and my PS3 (Laptop is even dual booting 7/Slack13. Albeit without raid)

Ubuntu Installation :: Fix Non Booting Windows7 Partition After I Installed 10.04?

Apr 17, 2010

I installed 10.04 and Grub won't boot into Windows7. I attempted to fix the problem through several different methods and nothing worked and I fear I made the booting problem worse than it was to begin with. I can boot into Ubuntu just fine, just not Windows7. Black screen with a cursor upper left hand. Windows7 repair disk does not help and using Windows7 command line repairs did nothing.

So here is an idea I came up with: Is there any way I can back up the Windows partition exactly the way it is, reinstall Windows7, and then somehow lay down all that information directly over the install to make it exactly like it was?

I doubt it is that simple, but is that possible? Like basically unhiding all the hidden files, copying them into a folder on my Ubuntu installation, reinstalling Windows7 and just copying them all back?

Debian Installation :: Installed Dual Boot 6 RC2 / No Boot At All

Apr 17, 2011

Before the installation, I had triple boot of WinXP, Win 7, Ubuntu 10.10. As you can guess, the main boot-loader was grub. The second is Win 7 boot loader, and there it gives the option what to choose, load XP or Win 7.I made a decision to remove Ubuntu and install Debian(you know better than me why I did). So first, I searched a guide how to un-dual-boot. It told me to delete the two partition that Ubuntu use(swap and ext4) and write to MBR the win 7 boot-loader(using EasyBCD), so I delete them and use EeasyBCD. At this stage, I had 2 partitions: NTFS for XP and NTFS for Win 7, and the Win 7 boot-loader(and XP) worked pretty well.I install the latest testing of Debian(6 RC2) from DVD1 using this guide, except I choose to use the graphical installer, ext4(not ext3 as there), install the desktop environment, and choose to install grub(even know it didn't asked me). The swap partition I set is 3 GB because my RAM is 2 GB, even know that ubuntu set it in the past to 2 GB.The installation went pretty well, just when come to grub package, it says that there was an error with installing grub package(it didn't told me what), I had no choice, so I choose to skip over grub/lilo and finish with no boot manager. I was thinking to myself: "So I couldn't install grub, at least I have the Win 7 boot-loader(which contain XP loader), and maybe Win 7 boot-loader will recognize Debian too.". But I end up with no boot at all.It told me than when choose not to install boot-manager that I need to load /vmlinuz and give it the parameter root=/dev/sda4(my deb partition).I think that if I could install grub, I could load all my boots("sudo grub update" right?).How can I fix it?
