Fedora :: Playing DVDs - Downloading Required Codecs?
Jan 17, 2011I recently installed fedora and enjoying learning what it can do. One of the things that I wanted to do was play DVDs. I installed vlc and the libvdreader package but am unable to play DVDs. I even used "movie player", and the program said, fedora does not have the right codecs to play the DVD. Does anybody know what I need to do? And what codecs that I need to download if any?

I'm hoping to find a batch of codecs for my newly installed openSUSE OS. I have a very troublesome collection of .mkv files that took several codec packs to make them work. For a brief explanation, I had tried haali and matroska both together and they still didn't work on certain mkvs. I ended up using CCCP, but that's win only as far as I can tell. It took the latest update of CCCP to work on all of my mkvs.

After finishing configure, the script returned that win32 codes will be unavailable because of 64-bit system.I need to view some avi-files coded in Intel Indeo 4. As I understand, this codec exists only in win32 codecs.

Ubuntu :: Banshee 1.7.3 Lyrics Plugin Does Not Work
Aug 4, 2010The lyrics plugin doesn't work in Banshee 1.7.3. It did seem to work in one of the earlier builds but not in any of the recent builds. When I try to activate the lyrics, Banshee says 'waiting for playback to begin'. The lyrics never appear.

Jun 25, 2011I think I've gone through every media player there is out there for Ubuntu, and the one that's come the closest to managing my library the way it's managed in Windows with MediaMonkey has been Banshee - being that at least it supports the albumartist tag.
But it still doesn't work as well as I'd like. In the 'artist' tag field I use the semicolon ( ; ) to separate the artists if there are more than one. For example the artist tag of a particular song may look like this: Blakroc;The Black Keys;Nicole Wray
MediaMonkey would see this and separate the tag so that each of the contributing artists would have this song under their name. Every media player on Ubuntu (that I know of) sees this as one artist in itself, so in my Artist section I could have a bazillion 'artists' who are in fact all the same artists.
My first question: is there a way to get Banshee (or another media player) to recognize the ' ; ' in the tags in the same way as WMP and MM do? My other question: is there a way to change which tagging fields Banshee looks for. For instance, when determining the album artist, some media players look for the 'ALBUM ARTIST' tag, others look for 'ALBUMARTIST' while others look for 'BAND'. They all mean the same thing but when your music is tagged in one program, it turns out completely different in another.

May 5, 2010I have Banshee's alarm plugin installed. From Banshee's menu, I click on Tools → Alarm Clock → Sleep Timer. The timer looks like it should be set according to 24-hour time, so I set it for 2 minutes past the current time and click "Okay". The timer doesn't turn off the music when the designated time comes and goes. Thinking that maybe it's a countdown timer, I just set the thing to 2 minutes, but 2 minutes later the music keeps playing on and on. I go Tools → Alarm Clock → Alarm and put a check mark in "Enable Alarm" and try the sleep timer again, but still it doesn't work. I'm running 10.04 64-bit.

Jul 3, 2011When my Iphone had the 4.2.1 firmware it mounted just fine with Ubuntu, OK sure it took a download of libimobiledevice1 and some other libraries but it worked, and sync'd just fine with Rhythmbox. But, as all manufacturers do, they have released a superior new OS for the phone which fixes all those annoying little bug. I have read from 4.3.2 they changed the itunes database version to an updated one. Now this is fine if you have a windows or mac machine running the latest version of itunes but if like all of us here you have an Ubuntu machine for a very valid reason... i.e you wanted a better operating system that wasnt going to cost the earth.
well, you are screwed as they have locked the third part access to the device's itunes library. I have followed long procedures trying to hack into the phone, modifying certain files, creating a hashfile and dropping this into a system folder to fool the phone into thinking it has the 4.2.1 database still but to no avail. Now my iphone is jailbroken, for the very same reasons as to why have an ubuntu machine, a good peice of hardware with good software that i can customise to run how i see fit, this error is the same with my friends non jaibroken phone and my wifes newly updated iopd..
Surely someone out there who has an ipod, iphone 3gs who are running 4.3.2 or higher has figured out how to fix this annoying "update" problem. The phone mounts fine and i can see a documents drive and the main iphone itself, so it is being recognised but im getting errors when trying ti access the phone in ANY linux media software... They all see the phone but cant recognise the database.

Dec 14, 2010I've spoken to people on the KDE forum about this but am a bit stumped. They advised me to change the phonon backend of Amarok from xine to phonon-backend-gstreamer or phonon-backend-vlc. The latter doesn't seem to be in the repositaries though someone on the KDE forum said otherwise. When I change to gstreamer, Amarok says it cannot play mp3 files. Apparently Kubuntu 10.04's Amarok is a bit old too but I can't see how to update it - does this involve adding a ppa or something?
I've added two other database-type players, Exaile and Rhythmbox, both designed of course for other desktop environments, but they both give gripes about codecs too or won't play. The xine backend causes jumps in playback mentioned in another post.
I have installed the Kubuntu restricted extras, and I even added w32codecs and nonfreecodecs at one point, now removed (--purged). I don't fancy moving to 10.10 as I like the 3 years of not messing about upgrading/reinstalling. I would ideally update just Amarok and KDE itself.

That is no longer true and I have been using Linux (Ubuntu) for the last year or so and I consider it superior to other OS'S and a BIG thanks to all who contribute to make it so great and free. My question is that on some versions of Ubuntu some hardware might work fine(or an package for that matter)and in the next version it might not work. Are new drivers required for every new version? When I scp after this I wasn't expecting to need a password but it is still prompting. Now I have used this same method before and it has worked great. The only difference this time is server2 is not in the same cage.

Mar 9, 2010I would like to use a wireless network from Ubuntu. In the network drop-down menu I select a network (this is a University network I have an account there). Then I get a windows with the following fields:

Inner Authentication: [some
letters] User Name: []
Password: []
I put there my user name and password and do not change default value and leave "Anonymous Identity"blank.
As a result of that I get "Authentication required by wireless network". How can I solve this problem?
I think it is important to notice that our system administrator tried to find some files (which are probably needed to be used as "CA Certificate"). He said that he does not know where this file is located on Ubuntu (he support only Windows). So, probably this is direction I need to go. I need to find this file. But may be I am wrong. May be something else needs to be done.
