How to install Multimedia Codecs for Lenny with Gnome?
View 8 Replies View RelatedI've spoken to people on the KDE forum about this but am a bit stumped. They advised me to change the phonon backend of Amarok from xine to phonon-backend-gstreamer or phonon-backend-vlc. The latter doesn't seem to be in the repositaries though someone on the KDE forum said otherwise. When I change to gstreamer, Amarok says it cannot play mp3 files. Apparently Kubuntu 10.04's Amarok is a bit old too but I can't see how to update it - does this involve adding a ppa or something?
I've added two other database-type players, Exaile and Rhythmbox, both designed of course for other desktop environments, but they both give gripes about codecs too or won't play. The xine backend causes jumps in playback mentioned in another post.
I have installed the Kubuntu restricted extras, and I even added w32codecs and nonfreecodecs at one point, now removed (--purged). I don't fancy moving to 10.10 as I like the 3 years of not messing about upgrading/reinstalling. I would ideally update just Amarok and KDE itself.
Fedora is a distro that is focused only on free and open source software. This means that Fedora doesn't distribute any proprietary or patent encumbred software, so they'll not be present in the official Fedora releases and repositories. This does not mean that they cannot be instaled in a Fedora distro. Because there are many users who want to run some of that software, the community has been providing, since a long time ago, alternative ways to acomplish that. This is very important when a new release is distributed, because it attracts many first time users and not all of them are aware of the above mentioned, and every six months, the same questions are placed in the forums, regarding that.
To help new users to install the non free and proprietary stuff mentioned in the titlle, I decided to leave here a fast summary, chosed among many of the available options.
Flash (only 64 bit)
Code:
su
yum erase flash-plugin nspluginwrapper*

yum install flash-plugin

Our internet connection is not strong enough to handle the 4 GB DVD ISO download of Ubuntu 10 that contains all the codecs etc.
What would be the process required for me to install all the codecs needed for full multimedia support, as it is very annoying the fact it does not come with them pre loaded.
As well as installation of codecs, what other things would need to be done to ensure the system is fully set up.
How to install Adobe Flash on my netbook. I recently installed openSUSE 11.4 which I am guessing is the newest one. I also am using Mozilla Firefox 4.0 Beta 12. I can't seem to install it at all. First I downloaded the YUM file and tried installing it with some weird program that came with openSUSE and it is just too difficult. I definitely do not know how to use it. Then I read I should be installing the tar.gz file and so I did. Even then people have different ways of installing it. The easiest way I have seen has been the way Adobe's website tells how to install it.
Installation instructions for tar.gz
1. Click the download link to begin installation. A dialog box will appear asking you where to save the file.
2. Save the .tar.gz file to your desktop and wait for the file to download completely.
3. Unpackage the file.
4. Copy the libflashplayer.so file to the plugins folder of your browser. Refer to your browser vendor for the location of this folder.
5. To verify the plug-in is installed in your Mozilla browser, launch Mozilla and choose Help > About Plug-ins from the browser menu.
Now my problem is that when it tells me to copy "Copy the libflashplayer.so file to the plugins folder of your browser" I cannot find the "plugins" folder in my mozilla/firefox folder. Now I'm actually wondering if it's because it a Beta version of Mozilla Firefox. I'm not very good with "coding" and "commands".
[URL]... It seems like I should be able to install i686 and x86_64 versions of the same package. This same dependency also prevents installing Adobe Reader.

I just installed Adobe Flash on my Ubuntu OS, and the audio disappeared. I hit an error on installing the adobe Flash, the first attempt I have, I mistakenly downloaded and installed the version for 8.x, and hit an error on installation. After that I installed the version for 9.x and video runs, but audio is missing.

Can anyone explain to me how to install the newest flash player on netbook remix? I am pretty rusty with linux and want to put it on my netbook. I currently have it on a flash drive. I want to make sure i can do everything I need on it before I wipe Windows.
View 6 Replies View RelatedI am a complete beginner but I have installed Freespire on a PC of mine. Everything works okay: BBC iPlayer, You Tube, Internet Radio except Deezer which, it seems, requires the installation of Adobe Flash Player 10. I've followed the recommendations of countless articles in the Internet without success and my head is now spinning. For example there seem to be three input screens for instructions: Shell, Linux Console and Root Shell. I don't even know which one I should be using. Frequently my failed efforts result in a message saying unknown file and directory. When I download Adobe tar.gz I can't see where it's going. I tried extracting to the Desktop and that produces a file ending in .so. But what ever I do nothing works.

View 5 Replies View Relatedi am a proud newbie user of debian linux. the desktop i use is xfce. i have iceweasel as the web browser. it cannot access flash content like videos videos and some others because the adobe flash plugin is not installed. i've done the following without success. i downloaded flash_player_10_linux.tar from adobe's site, unpacked it to get libflashplayer.so. but under /usr/lib/iceweasel, there is no plugins folder to put it in. there is, however, a broken link called plugins. then i created a plugins folder under home/myaccount/.mozilla and pasted the libflashplayer.so file over there. i restarted iceweasel, but it cannot still detect flash content.
then i ran apt-get install of jre and downloaded all java packages. however, while installation it gave an error saying, "cannot overwrite iceweasel/plugins". this came most probably because as mentioned earlier there is no plugins folder under iceweasel to begin with. on running the about : plugins command, i get "no plugins installed". i then deleted the plugins folder from .mozilla and directly pasted the libflashplayer.so file under usr/lib/iceweasel (since it contained many other .so files). how to enable iceweasel to enable the adobe flashplayer plugin.
I'm new to this and trying to install flashplugin to the terminal. I entered apt-get install flashplugin-nonfree, and it says package not found. What do i do. I can't install yahoo messenger without it or see any videos on ..... or any thing that requires adobe.
View 14 Replies View RelatedI was using THIS guide to install restricted multimedia codecs. I got to the part where I had to switch system packages to the Packman packages. It came up with a number of dependency errors. I then had a stupid moment and told it to ignore the dependencies and break the applications. Now Xine won't even start, and Amarok seems to have disappeared on my computer. Oh and I also got a bunch of weird dependency problems when I was trying to install some of the packages from Packman too as listed on the guide. I also told it to ignore them when it couldn't find the dependencies. I'm scared I fudged multimedia up so badly I would have to do a clean install to get it back. BTW, I'm running openSUSE 11.2. I don't know if there are other specifications that matter.

View 3 Replies View RelatedI have just reinstalled ubuntu 9.10 on my laptop. The laptop is used as a Jukebox and has never had a problem doing this job. Yesterday my HDD died, hence the reinstall. When I go to add the MP3s to rythumbox and it searches for the relevant codecs it keeps saying "No packages with the requested plug ins found". I have been to the ubuntu restricted extras site to DL the package and I get a "URL failed to load" message. So I go to an unsupported site and DL the package and install it manually but I still can't add any MP3s. Now it is saying that the restricted extras package is already loaded but I still can't add any MP3s.
