When I try to formate ext2/3 FS to a disk, it never completes, or hangs or then wont quit all the way when I shut it down. Then I have to use sudo pkill gparted to kill it right. Any one else having this trouble? Whats going on here? Is this some sort of kernel regression?

As you can tell im not too knowledgeable on this subject. I know (i think) linux has a built in firewall called iptables but ive never used it or looked into it.

View 5 Replies View RelatedI've got a solid PC w/Xeon dual core, 4gb RAM, and (2) 1Tb Sata HDs - looking to replace a WinXP pc that currently is running PlayOn (for media to the BD player on the TVs) and sharing folders/drives to all the PCs (WinXP, Win7, OSX, and Ubuntu.
I have tried a few distros to get media shared to the BD players, and even a Win7 - but the BD players can't seem to play any of the video files on the newer 'servers' - and only the Win7 even appears to the Sony TV in the living room (even though it can only browse the folders with video files). Another problem with the Win7 being tested for acting as a server - is the Macs cant seem to access the shares (get Access Denied errors).
Wondering if there is any good distro that is mainly setup for sharing files and storage space to all my devices. Thinking of trying FreeNAS, and seeing if I could add the UPnP/DNLA server packages to it?

View 2 Replies View RelatedI installed a new instance of Ubuntu server (10.04) and set the hostname equal to "ubuntu-10.04-server-i386". However when I type the command hostname I get that the hostname is equal to "ubuntu-10". I then realised that the command hostname --long gives me the full name (as defined when doing the linux installation) while hostname --short gives me the name as displayed in terminal. My question is; what is the difference between these two? Are both valid?

View 5 Replies View RelatedI have used Linux off and on over the years and had to go back to windows because of a problem I could not solve. That is no longer true and I have been using Linux (Ubuntu) for the last year or so and I consider it superior to other OS'S and a BIG thanks to all who contribute to make it so great and free. My question is that on some versions of Ubuntu some hardware might work fine(or an package for that matter)and in the next version it might not work. Are new drivers required for every new version? Do all driver work for all versions of Linux using the same kernel?
View 1 Replies View RelatedI am trying to set up a SSH key between servers so no password is required when I have to "scp" files between the two. This is what I have tried so far but still requires a password:
Code:
ssh-keygen -t rsa
scp /home/<user>/.ssh/id_rsa <server2.com>:/home/<user>/.ssh/athorized_keys
When I scp after this I wasn't expecting to need a password but it is still prompting. Now I have used this same method before and it has worked great. The only difference this time is server2 is not in the same cage.
I would like to use a wireless network from Ubuntu. In the network drop-down menu I select a network (this is a University network I have an account there). Then I get a windows with the following fields:
Wireless Security: [WPA&WPA2
Enterprise] Authentication:
[Tunneled TLS] Anonymous Identity:
[] CA Certificate: [(None)]
Inner Authentication: [some
letters] User Name: []
Password: []
I put there my user name and password and do not change default value and leave "Anonymous Identity"blank.
As a result of that I get "Authentication required by wireless network". How can I solve this problem?
I think it is important to notice that our system administrator tried to find some files (which are probably needed to be used as "CA Certificate"). He said that he does not know where this file is located on Ubuntu (he support only Windows). So, probably this is direction I need to go. I need to find this file. But may be I am wrong. May be something else needs to be done.
For a program, I am getting
GCC_4.2.0' not found (required by /usr/lib/libstdc++.so.6)
on a Debian AMD64 machine. I am guessing the most likely issue is that the program is linked against this library but the necessary object files are missing on my system.
I have one doubt regarding minimum partition required to install linux O/S to the best of my knowledge, "/", "swap" & "/boot" are the essential partitions required for installing Linux, but i think linux should also work without "swap". please suggest or correct me if I am wrong

So i have a small home server i need to setup. I used to have arch linux installed, but i found it unstable and more difficult to maintain. So i heard about the stability if CentOS and decided to try it out. I got samba setup no problem, but cups i cannot get to work. The orinter driver for my epson workforce 500 requires lsb 3.2 whereas lsb installed in centos is only 3.1. What can i do to fix this? Should i just go with fedora instead?
