I have an external 3.5" USB 250Gb HDD which is showing symptoms of hardware problems (repeated /var/log/messages errors of "reset high speed USB device using ehci_hcd"). This was originally plugged in to my NSLU2 running Debian Etch. I have just installed Ubuntu Desktop 9.10 to a spare Pentium-3M laptop and was hoping to copy the contents of this HDD to a fresh drive. However, I cannot mount it even read-only; mount -o ro /dev/sde3 /mnt/disk fails, and the /var/log/messages error is "recovery required on readonly filesystem", "write access unavailable, cannot proceed". I cannot understand why mounting a disk read-only should require write access. Following advice I googled elsewhere, I tried running mke2fs -n /dev/sde3 to try to list the alternative superblocks - but once again I got the error that the device was read-only. How can I go about accessing the data on this disk?

I want to resize my swap partition /dev/sda2 to use 1GB out of the above space. How can I achieve that?
I'm following the book RHCE book (5th edition) by Michael Jang. On the exercise on pg.140, creating partitions, I've created /boot (hda1), swap (hda2) and / (hda3). So far so good.
Next, I'm supposed to make an extended partition, containing the rest of the disk. So this should be hda4, right? But when I try to create either an LVM, or RAID partition, it creates hda4 AND hda5 under hda4. Why is that? Am I doing something wrong? The book next asks me to create /var as hda5, so if hda5 is already created automatically above, how am I supposed to create /var?

View 3 Replies View RelatedI have had some help with root password su and sudo su, but I can not find the correct password to install or remove programs. I keep getting the same message ' Authenticate' Authentication is required to install software packages. An application is attempting to perform an action that requires privileges.Authentication is required to perform this action. Then it asks for a password, I've tried enter, seacats, knoppix, user, and my root password. None of these work I seem to be a second user and not the owner.
My Linux language is very low, but I am learning, right now in order to find or try to install software I go through the startup menu> preferences> software center. Is there another way to find and install software that doesn't require and authentication password? If so where do I find out the steps to do this? Hands on is always the best teacher.
