I recently installed fedora and enjoying learning what it can do. One of the things that I wanted to do was play DVDs. I installed vlc and the libvdreader package but am unable to play DVDs. I even used "movie player", and the program said, fedora does not have the right codecs to play the DVD. Does anybody know what I need to do? And what codecs that I need to download if any?

I just installed F15 new, and I wonder what packages do I need to install to play movies with restricted codecs? I thought I have everything what I installed last time with F14 but I can't play my movies in Kaffeine. I have rmpfusion and the packages gstreamer-plugins-bad-free gstreamer-ffmpeg gstreamer-plugins-bad gstreamer-plugins-ugly, and all other gstreamer-* packages.

It came with Windows 7 Premium but I have replaced that with Ubuntu 10.04 LTS Lucid. (Actually, a friend helped me do that.) So I installed VLC Media Player and it won't play the DVD either. It presents me with a host of files, none of which it will play.I would like to stay with 10.04 if possible because I want to give this lap-top to my sister and I would like her to have an LTS distro, so she doesn't have to upgrade for a long time.My supposition is that I need to add a source for additional codecs and install them.I did search these forums (fora?) for codec, but didn't find anything appropriate. I'm not so familiar with this, so I may have missed something.
So what codecs do I need to get Banshee to come to life?

View 1 Replies View RelatedI wanted to listen to some of my MP3's to see if they worked. So I double-clicked on one of them and got a message saying "search for suitable plugin?"
I clicked on "search." It then searches plugin packages and tells me to select the packages for installation. The available packages are:
gstreamer0.10-ffmpeg
gstreamer0.10-fluendo-mp3
gstreamer0.10-plugins-ugly
I checked off all of them and then clicked "install." I then get a window to "confirm installation of restricted software." I click on confirm and then get a window saying "authenticate to install or remove software, you need to authenticate" and it asks for a password. I'm assuming they mean my login password. I enter my password and click "authenticate" but then nothing happens. The password entry space goes away but the authenticate window remains. I don't know if I'm supposed to manually close it after clicking authenticate. But I tried that. What happens when I close the "authenticate" window is that another window appears saying "applying changes" but then I get a message saying "requires installation of untrusted packages. The action would require the installation of packages from not authenticated sources." The details lists these: gstreamer0.10-ffmpeg gstreamer0.10-fluendo-mp3 gstreamer0.10-plugins-ugly liba52-0.7.4 libavcodec52 libavformat52 libavutil50 libdvdnav4 libdvdread4 libgsm1 libid3tag0 libmad0 libmpeg2-4 liboil0.3 libopencore-amrnb0 libopencore-amrwb0 libpostproc51 libschroedinger-1.0-0 libsidplay1 libswscale0 libtwolame0 libva1 libvpx0
If I click on ok. Another window appears saying: "none of the selected packages were installed."
I put a few Itunes songs into my music folder and tried to play them. It didn't. Then, I got to reading in the forums and noticed that there was a "one click" configuration for Gnome users. After doing some more reading, I saw a lot of references to restricted codecs and things of that nature. After beginning the one-click process and then aborting midway through installation, three questions come to mind:
1) Why all the warnings about legalities of downloading the codecs/files? If I bought the music and I use the codecs to listen to it, where does legalities come into play?
2) While installing some of the different files, etc in the one-click process, I received a few warnings that a particular file was not from a trusted source (I don't remember the info verbatim) and then it gave me an email address, presumably from the developer, and asked if I wanted to install it anyway.
3) If I do go through the one-click process, will I be able to listen to I-tunes or am I pretty much screwed on I-tunes on linux?
I am new to opensuse. I want to install multimedia codecs on my opensuse 11.4. Is there any way to download multimedia codecs as an iso file and then burn a cd to install them on opensuse? Now, I am downloading "NonOSS CD" in add-on downloads section, is this iso file containing multimedia codecs?

I used something called Regionset to reset the player from zero to 2 for playback in the UK but although it is now set to Region 2 it will only play Region 0 DVDs. I have tried all sorts of tricks with codecs and installing VLC and (of course) Ubuntu Restricted Extras but no joy.

View 6 Replies View RelatedMy newly installed (but not new) DVD drive seems to play some movies some days, but others all the time. I'm pretty sure it's just a little picky about scratches. I can hear it in the drive; when I insert the disk, I can tell when it isn't spinning. When it does start spinning, that's when the Media options window pops up asking me what I want to do with the disk.

Why I can't play protected DVDs?
I've got this weird problem where my DVDs - just standard netflix DVDs mostly - will stop playing about halfway through. At first I thought it was a problem with the disks, but it has happened far too often now, and I tested one of the disk and it played fine in Windows - though I had to sit through 20 minutes of unskippable ads to check.
I get exactly the same problem regardless of player; I usually use VLC, but VLC, MPlayer, and at least one other all stop in exactly the same place. There's no buffering or freezing or anything, it just stops as if it were the end of the disk, and it always stops at the same time on a disk (not always at the same time on different disks). I can't skip past that point, it's like there is nothing past that point.
I have just installed SuSE 11.4 and find that xine and VLC cant play DVDs. xine reports:'input plugin cannot open MRL [dvd:/]' and then 'cannot find input plugin for MRL [dvd:/]'. Plainly I've either forgotten to install something, or somethings' permissions are wrong.

I like the fact that it's supposed to be a very powerful and stable distro. When I tried to view a couple of video clips from a website it just won't play, though. Other distros play 'out of the box' but perhaps I need some pointing in the right direction from the more experienced Debian user! I installed MPlayer but that hasn't made any difference. I also downloaded Flash for Linux, which installed without problems. What I need to do? Plug-ins required etc?

I've been using 8.04 on an old laptop for quite a while and have been able to watch encrypted DVDs, as I have installed all the proper drivers.
But suddenly, every time I insert an encrypted DVD, it will mount and I can see the name of it and browse the files, but neither MPlayer nor VLC will play it.
I know the drive works, because if I boot into XP I can watch them there.
I already tried reinstalling the drivers and am out of ideas.
I have moved over to Ubuntu 10.04 from vista.Got only one slight problem- the media I am downloading is not playing with the correct colours. As far as I know all the codecs are installed.I have done a screen shot to explain because I don't know what isn't working. [URL]...
