I have one doubt regarding minimum partition required to install linux O/S to the best of my knowledge, "/", "swap" & "/boot" are the essential partitions required for installing Linux, but i think linux should also work without "swap". please suggest or correct me if I am wrong

I have had some help with root password su and sudo su, but I can not find the correct password to install or remove programs. I keep getting the same message ' Authenticate' Authentication is required to install software packages. An application is attempting to perform an action that requires privileges.Authentication is required to perform this action.Then it asks for a password, I've tried enter, seacats, knoppix, user, and my root password. None of these work I seem to be a second user and not the owner.
My Linux language is very low, but I am learning, right now in order to find or try to install software I go through the startup menu> preferences> software center. Is there another way to find and install software that doesn't require and authentication password? If so where do I find out the steps to do this? Hands on is always the best teacher.
I have vista and opensuse 11.2 on my computer, the problem is i can't open ext3 partitions from vista but i can the other way. I tried Ext2fsd but the linux partition is always in a read only mood even when i change this option. Also, all folders are empty I downloaded the program as admin and compatable with XP SP2.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI've been trying to install Linux as a dual boot with Windows 7 on my Dell latitude e6510.It is currently running Windows 7 and I have used the MS disk tools to shrink the Win 7 NTFS partition to make room for Linux.The issue I'm having is that when I run Linux installers by boot from CD they see the entire hard drive as unallocated space. I have tried Ubuntu 10.10, Kbuntu 10.10 and Fedora 14 and they all have the same problem.I have also tried the Ubuntu "install in Windows" option and could not get it to work.EDIT:Booting Gparted 0.8.0 from a usb drive did not work. It reported the entire drive as unpartitioned.
View 4 Replies View RelatedI just got an hp dv4-2145dx and I am attempting to install ubuntu 9.04. I understand that the maximum number of primary partitions is four. The four on this hard disc are the windows one, a tiny one called hp tools, another tiny one called SYSTEM and then the recovery drive. Does this mean that I will be unable to install linux without deleting one of these partitions? Are they all necessary? deleting any since I don't know what they do.

View 4 Replies View RelatedI think the installation caused the corruption of the partition table. I removed the last 3 logical partitions and gparted correctly reported the 2 remaining distros and the swap. The problem hopefully will be solved when I reinstall those distros. I have a 160 gig HD with 3 Linux,1 swap,and a Windows partition. I attempted to install PCLINUXOS unsuccessfully. When I rebooted I had the same grub. I checked gparted and it indicated all 160 gigs as unallocated. fdisk shows the partitions. and indicates one partition as empty where I attempted to install PCLOS.
No problem in accessing any of my distros, but currently I can't make any changes to my HD. I've tried parted magic and there was no solution there. I have been unable to download the Ubuntu Rescue remix. Is there a way to restore? I haven't used fdisk or cfdisk for that purpose. I am beginning to think I would need to delete all of the partitions in the extended.

I'm trying to install a custom-compiled version of PHP 5.2.12 on a RHEL 5 server. Since I'd like to do this repeatedly on other servers, I have built custom PHP RPMs that can be deployed to other machines. (I edited the spec file to include all the relevant configure flags when compiling the PHP packages.) The compilation succeeds without error, and all the RPMs are built correctly.
And yet, even though it is there, and ldconfig says it's there, rpm isn't finding it! I'm at a loss to understand why. Just to see what would happen, I tried copying libclntsh.so.10.1 to /usr/lib64. rpm can't find it there either! So what is it about this shared library file that is wrong?
When we install a linux OS, we've an option to create partitions. In my laptop I've create partition for /opt, /home, / and /tmp. Are these partitions the same type of partitions as the partitions created by LVM?
View 1 Replies View RelatedI downloaded the 6.06 version of xubuntu because i have a laptop that doesnt support high graphics mode, and i wasnt able to figure out how to get it to run in low graphics mode. i figured that i would get a version from a while back, and then update it up to the current version. now, to the problem. I was able to upgrade 6.10, but now it says Ubuntu version 8.04 available, so i tried to update it. it gets most of the way through the part where it says calculating or something like that, and then it says: "Can't install 'xubuntu-desktop' It was impossible to install a required package. Please report this as a bug." with an option that says close at the bottom. when i click close another window pops up that says: Could not calculate the upgrade A unresolvable problem occurred while calculating the upgrade. This can be caused by:
* Upgrading to a pre-release version of Ubuntu
* Running the current pre-release version of Ubuntu
* Unofficial software packages not provided by Ubuntu
If none of this applies, then please report this bug against the 'update-manager' package and include the files in /var/log/dist-upgrade/ in the bugreport. Then the window just closes... anything that i could do to get rid of this problem? EDIT: Is there any way to update directly from an .iso file on the desktop?
I would like to try out fc10 on an old, k6-2 pc. Last night I tried to download the dvd, but firefox 'completed' the download with only 1.2/~3xg, and of course it didn't work.
I am trying a test net installation in VirtualBox, so far so good.
However, I would rather have a more complete installation on hand and I'm looking at the full install cd's --there are 6 of them.

Are all 6 required for a minimal install, or could I get by with one (or two, etc)? For example, with debian installation cds you can use just the first one -- the rest are just a complete set of packages for everything +kitchen sink.
I've added a couple of extra repos in my x86_64 Fedora 11 KDE installation.Namely, skype and rpmfusion and no rawhide stuff.I've asked then to install skype (Skype 2.0.0.72).While I was expecting a lot of packages because skype has decided not to support 64bit environments, I have found some very weird packages within the 79 item list.
View 11 Replies View RelatedToday, shortly after booting my OpenSUSE 11.3 I got this popup. [URL]. I guess it was caused by the Updater Applet when checking the repos for new updates. But what does it mean? Why do I get this now and not when adding the repo. It seems to belong to the filesystems repo and I have indeed added that some time ago (in order to install davfs2). I'm not sure what it means to accept a signature.
Normally with public key infrastructure, you need to accept other's public keys or certificates containing their public keys. And before doing so you need to verify the fingerprint, otherwise the whole procedure is useless, because it might be a fake certificate / man in the middle talking to you. Once you have accepted (trusted) the public key (or a certificate containing it), the system will check signatures for you.
So the question "do you want accept this signature" sounds weird to me. In openSUSE repos I have come across fingerprints many times before. But whenever I have searched google in order to verify the fingerprint I have not received any useful hit. I would have expected that valid keys and their fingerprints are listed on some web site. It appears there are three instances of package signing keys ... but there has not been any answer.
I'm running Ubuntu 10.10 64bit and I have succesfully installed 10.10 32bit as a chroot using URL...I'm able to go into the chroot shell and it works perfectlyI want to run PCSX2. I have it downloaded in my personal Downloads folder but how to I access it from a chroot? also will I have to install all the libs required for PCSX2 within the chroot itself?

OpenSUSE 11.2 installation DVD has many many applications that are installed by default.How can I install just the minimum for a working system. As an excercise I am trying to build a Nas system which I can install into our Windows Active Directory at work and have user access controlled via an Active Directory user group. I have no need therefore for so many of the applications available. I have tried uninstalling some applications and have managed to remove some features that I infact needed to keep.just a minor thing like the Gnome interface (gee!). Is there a list available of core applications required to function etc. that would help me to streamline my build?

I just burned the iso of openSUSe 11.4 onto a dvd, and I make it through all of the installation. At the end it reboots the computer and starts in the kernel/command line or whatever you call it. I think it's kernel. Anyway, it asks for my username and password and then it says like "have fun.." () or something and then just has like my directory or whatever waiting for commands. Is there some command to start up the OS?
