General :: Privileges Required To Install Software?

I am about to install some software on Red Hat Linux. I can understand all the instructions apart from the first. It says Log on to the UNIX system with the privileges required to install software. You can create an
account specifically for this purpose. Caution: Do not install as root. What does this mean exactly?

General :: Authentication Is Required To Install Software Packages For Knoppix

Jul 24, 2011

I have had some help with root password su and sudo su, but I can not find the correct password to install or remove programs. I keep getting the same message ' Authenticate' Authentication is required to install software packages. An application is attempting to perform an action that requires privileges.Authentication is required to perform this action. Then it asks for a password, I've tried enter, seacats, knoppix, user, and my root password. None of these work I seem to be a second user and not the owner.

My Linux language is very low, but I am learning, right now in order to find or try to install software I go through the startup menu> preferences> software center. Is there another way to find and install software that doesn't require and authentication password? If so where do I find out the steps to do this? Hands on is always the best teacher.

Debian :: How To Sign In Or Install For Root Privileges

Feb 28, 2015

I used Zorin, Ubuntu, and Kubuntu. Even though Kubuntu was my favorite because of the KDE platform, it still didn't have what I was looking for. With Debian, the KDE platform works great, it uses KDM instead of LightDM, (you can do more with that), and the choices of software for setting it up as a server is great. The problem I having right now is with the root privileges. With the other Debian based systems I used, root privileges was not a problem. When I signed in, it was with my user name and my root password.

Every time I did updates or installed software, it ask me for authentication which is my root password. And if I had to use su or sudo commands in the terminal it ask for my password. I had no problem with that. I'm just as big with security as any Unix based system users. And Linux has that. That's one of the big reasons I left Microsoft Windows for Linux. There was times when I had to have full root privileges for just a short time, and my favorite command was sudo nautilus. This was perfect.

For example, sometimes I had to get in to the opt folder for a brief moment to past a web page in it. Opt is a root folder. It can be opened with out a root privilege, but you just can't past files to it. Sudo nautilus was perfect for this because it is a temporary root privilege. Close the terminal and the root privilege session ends. This is great. You don't want root privileges all the time you're log in. That can be dangerous because it's a high security risk.

With Debian, I have not been able to get any root privileges. And without root privileges, I can't load much needed software, can't access my second hard drive, matter of fact, the second hard drive doesn't even show up. I can't really do much of anything. Is there something I can do when I am installing Debian to fix this or how do I get the root privileges I need?

OpenSUSE Install :: Privileges Depending On Boot Method?

Jan 30, 2011

1. I need to mount SAN blackarmor share at boot. I can do it manually. But I need it mounted everytime. So I introduced it into fstab. No result. See my fstab below.

Code:

//192.168.1.3/Public/home/pawel/black-publicautoauto,rw,user="myuser",password="mypassword"00

I wonder what type of filesystem shall I use. Manuall mounting works with no fs spec, if smbfs or nfs is pointed it makes error.2. When I boot and loging in run level 5 straight into gnome desktop I've got different privileges, expecially to USB devices and sound system (I can not play on my external sound card). How can I control this behaviour. Let's assume that I want to stratx from level 3 as regular user and want to have all this automatic privilleges for hot plugin USB devices and automatic access to sound system. Is controlled by gnome?

There were no files in the pen-drive but it still showed 5 GB used ( the same amount of data was there previously ). I restarted and switched to Linux. All my data was in a single folder named 'Found.000' . It showed nearly 400 objects , renamed as 'file0001.CHK'. They were all mine, merged in a single folder. I am helpless because I can not delete them (as I need them). I can get administrative privileges.

Red Hat :: Rpm Install Can't Find Required Libclntsh

Apr 6, 2010

I'm trying to install a custom-compiled version of PHP 5.2.12 on a RHEL 5 server. Since I'd like to do this repeatedly on other servers, I have built custom PHP RPMs that can be deployed to other machines. (I edited the spec file to include all the relevant configure flags when compiling the PHP packages.) The compilation succeeds without error, and all the RPMs are built correctly.

And yet, even though it is there, and ldconfig says it's there, rpm isn't finding it! I'm at a loss to understand why. Just to see what would happen, I tried copying libclntsh.so.10.1 to /usr/lib64. rpm can't find it there either! So what is it about this shared library file that is wrong?

Ubuntu Installation :: Can't Update On Laptop - Error "Can't Install 'xubuntu-desktop' It Was Impossible To Install A Required Package"

Oct 6, 2010

I downloaded the 6.06 version of xubuntu because i have a laptop that doesnt support high graphics mode, and i wasnt able to figure out how to get it to run in low graphics mode. i figured that i would get a version from a while back, and then update it up to the current version. now, to the problem. I was able to upgrade 6.10, but now it says Ubuntu version 8.04 available, so i tried to update it. it gets most of the way through the part where it says calculating or something like that, and then it says: "Can't install 'xubuntu-desktop' It was impossible to install a required package. Please report this as a bug." with an option that says close at the bottom. when i click close another window pops up that says: Could not calculate the upgrade A unresolvable problem occurred while calculating the upgrade. This can be caused by:

* Upgrading to a pre-release version of Ubuntu
* Running the current pre-release version of Ubuntu
* Unofficial software packages not provided by Ubuntu

If none of this applies, then please report this bug against the 'update-manager' package and include the files in /var/log/dist-upgrade/ in the bugreport. Then the window just closes... anything that i could do to get rid of this problem? EDIT: Is there any way to update directly from an .iso file on the desktop?

Fedora Installation :: FC10 I386 - How Many CDs - Of 6 - Required For Min. Install

Apr 18, 2009

I would like to try out fc10 on an old, k6-2 pc. Last night I tried to download the dvd, but firefox 'completed' the download with only 1.2/~3xg, and of course it didn't work.

I am trying a test net installation in VirtualBox, so far so good.

However, I would rather have a more complete installation on hand and I'm looking at the full install cd's --there are 6 of them.

[url]

Are all 6 required for a minimal install, or could I get by with one (or two, etc)? For example, with debian installation cds you can use just the first one -- the rest are just a complete set of packages for everything +kitchen sink.

OpenSUSE Install :: 11.3 - Repository Signature Required For New Updates

Jan 13, 2011

Today, shortly after booting my OpenSUSE 11.3 I got this popup. [URL]. I guess it was caused by the Updater Applet when checking the repos for new updates. But what does it mean? Why do I get this now and not when adding the repo. It seems to belong to the filesystems repo and I have indeed added that some time ago (in order to install davfs2). I'm not sure what it means to accept a signature.

Normally with public key infrastructure, you need to accept other's public keys or certificates containing their public keys. And before doing so you need to verify the fingerprint, otherwise the whole procedure is useless, because it might be a fake certificate / man in the middle talking to you. Once you have accepted (trusted) the public key (or a certificate containing it), the system will check signatures for you.

So the question "do you want accept this signature" sounds weird to me. In openSUSE repos I have come across fingerprints many times before. But whenever I have searched google in order to verify the fingerprint I have not received any useful hit. I would have expected that valid keys and their fingerprints are listed on some web site. It appears there are three instances of package signing keys ... but there has not been any answer.
